Thank you for making this video! When I first downloaded Inkscape I was so overwhelmed. Now I am so inspired!

Check out Nick Saporito's channel for some amazing tutorials. He's got a great understanding of the software and the ins and outs of design.

I didn't know about the MS Word feature to remove background. Good to know.

I hope to see more videos of you breaking down how things are made, and how to make your own, or the decision process on how something is made, this is almost like a crash course into graphic design but free.

And I've never taken a graphic design course. All human knowledge ever is at your fingertips and the vast majority of it is free.

Thanks for this! I've been playing with Inkscape for a while now, but I've only been using it for vector graphics. This opens up so many options!

Super late to the party, but for those us that don't have Word, what is the most effective way to remove the background from around the figure?

Nailed it, even better than the original imo.

Get images (photos, line art, clip art, etc.) in JPEG, PNG and vector formats - and even video clips FREE FOR ANY USE INCLUDING COMMERCIAL, without watermarks at Pixabay.com - thousands and thousands of excellent images. Note that you can buy the originator a "cup of coffee" with a small voluntary donation which I ALWAYS do if I'm using their image commercially.

Mine isn't working properly. When I apply Filter(s) something weird happens-the desired filter doesn't apply properly; the image gets weirdly cut into a smaller dimension.

Great video! Is "removing" the Shutterstock logo from the images and using them on an actual book cover legal? Seems like it wouldn't be.

When you buy the rights to use them it removes the watermarks. I don't like to buy images I don't use (and I don't have a subscription - that's expensive), so I like to do the basic design and then swap out the real images once I've decided on what I like.

what software platform would you prefer? I use Inkscape for lots of things because it is free, but most covers are done in Photoshop these days.

I don't have access to photoshop so I can't really compare. Just started using Inkscape a couple of weeks ago and seeing what it can do. I'm quite impressed at its capabilities. I really liked how you included some of the rules around shutterstock and made the whole process really easy to understand.

The problem with inkscape (which I still use for typography design - here I did the logo in inkscape and the rest in photoshop - zulonline.com/discography) is that it has very limited raster tools, including a functional transparency painter (or eraser) that makes blending images much more difficult. Just compare these two covers for the same book. The first was done entirely in Inkscape, the second was done entirely in photoshop:

Also here's a playlist of me making covers in inkscape ua-cam.com/play/PLrcjHcKc8BLiDEIrmEWSzFlVJ8WVqql9B.html

As I haven't used rasterise in photoshop then I don't miss the tool. It's very hard to compare the 2 images from the links as they are such different designs and colours. I would say the second one looks sharper but is that purely due to the depth of colour... hard to know.
