I have to hand it to Turner, he seemed to have a very genuine desire to make a difference and educate kids about the environment with this show and definitely went above and beyond what most executives would generally do to make it a reality

That's because for a long while production troubles meant there were only a handful of completed episodes ready for the premiere deadline, so they just kept showing those few episodes over and over until they had more to broadcast.

Man, I'll always always remember the episode when they saw Hitler. And Cap, just being near the guy, was overwhelmed and brought to his knees by Hitler's hatred. That had struck a chord with me and I began looking up info on WW2.
Overall, one of my favourite cartoon series. To this day I tell my friends (jokingly) don't litter "cause it'll piss off Gaia" (but I definitely know the show had an impact on my trash disposal habits). One unique thing about the series is how they aged the Planeteers in the final season. Wheeler, Linka and company went from around 13 years old to 16 by the end of the series and every Planeteer got a re-design where they were slightly older and looked more heroic. It was quite interesting and I wish they had done it sooner.

I think it's kinda telling about the modern history of environmentalism that the "punchline" to that ep was how Captain Planet failed at stopping the climatepocalypse.
Again, I blame the neoliberal* emphasis on "personal responsibility" over the actual massive societal changes needed to fix stuff combined with the ideological trends currently lumped under "degrowth" that created a perception of environmentally sound living as societally mandated aceticism/austerity.
This is why I'm a fully-automated luxury socialist people, read Leigh Alexander y'all!

they actually recently had a captain planet parody character on rick and morty in the form of planetina who morty falls in love with and saves from her version of the planeteers by killing them when they were about to sell her to terrorists. planetina is a very sweet and honest god-like entity but she ends up going on a murderous rampage on everything she sees harming the planet (such as burning alive a bunch of oil workers) and the theory is that the reason she does this is because there was no heart (thus making her more a force of nature and fairly unstable). so ya,point is that i think people (at least those that watch rick and morty) are kind of now getting how important the heart is.XD

Great video. I once wrote a d&d campaign based on Captain Planet. It was set during the industrial revolution and the planeteers were basically the top five agents in a secret organization. Captain Planet was the combined essence of the original five founding agents resurrected by Gaia into an element avatar for her power. Each planeteer did have a ring, but tapping into those energies was dangerous and only for emergencies. All the villains were reworked for the time period. It was a lot of fun.

Though Captain Planet was an interesting show, there were episodes in which it suggested that not everything was as straight forward as it seemed. I remember, in particular, an episode in which Doctor Blight had created a machine for time travel, and yet it was Gaia who ordered Blight's AI assistant to send Wheeler into the future. Also, there were times when the show bordered on planet worship and would become rather "preachy". There were also times in which the episode's ending was such that I could not help but wonder if the Planeteers themselves hadn't actually done more harm than good, plus it often seemed as if the "villains" weren't simply set up as a gimmick, as their actions never really made any sense. To that end, I could live without a live-action movie ever being made, especially given all the pollution that is generated from making a movie.

Curiously, " OK, K.O.! Let's be Heroes" did a crossover episode that expanded on the CP lore. Kwame showed up in an episode and gave out the elemental rings to the cast so they could summon Captain Planet in order to stop Dr. Blights evil plans.
Then Captain Planet breaks the bad news to K.O., and the audience, about how he and the Planeteers tried saving the planet years ago only to result in a fruitless victory. Things didn't get better like they had hoped because the effects of climate change became irreversible.

OR, maybe it's updating her region of origin for geographical and sociopolitical accuracy and people misuse the term "retcon" to explain any clarification of vague origins, rather than it's intended purpose of changing origins retroactively. Linka is from the same region of the world, it just wasn't the USSR, anymore.

I know people look back on it more fondly nowadays because of the early 90s cheese, the stories that were basically moralizing PSA's, the outdated stereotypes (of course the North American kid had to be an impulsive, selfish jerk), Captain Planet's mullet, the awful theme song, and the fact that the kid who got the power of Heart got seriously shafted, but are there any actual Captain Planet and the Planeteers fans that like the show unironically?
