The History of COPS (aka C.O.P.S.)

- In this episode we cover the history of COPS also known as C.O.P.S.
Inspired by Robocop? Maybe? It only lasted 1 season at the tail end of the 80's but it's action figures had a gimmick that would not be seen on the toy shelves of today.

Not only was this was a great cartoon, but it had one of the most absolutely amazing intros of any show I've ever seen.
As a young Black kid growing up in the 80's it was Wonderful to have a lead character in a cartoon that looks like you, it meant a lot to me!
That's what drew me to this cartoon------the fact the leader was black!! Never saw that represented or promoted before.
Bp Vess was my fav character, "it's crime fighting time"!
@Ralph Demascus Some of us being slightly older at the time began to identify with racial identity, self-awareness and where we stood on the totem pole in American society. It was like being asleep one minute and woke the next.
@Ralph Demascus If only we all could've been so lucky to have lead a life such as yours, but that's only for a charmed few, I suppose? In the meantime, the rest of us are resigned to deal with things as they are or just figments of our limited imaginations.
@Ralph Demascus It's not about extremes as much as it is about acknowledging that racism in many forms exist and always have. I don't need to be hanged/lynched by a white mob, denied my God-given rights or shot down by cops while wielding nothing more than a cell phone in my hand to feel it's realness. Racism exists and it's not just a manufactured figment of some folk's imagination.
The theme song to this show is forever embedded in my memories...
Haim sabans sound wizards are like drug dealer, they know their job.
That and cyber cops lol
It's crime fighting time.
This was the shit back in the 80's
Honestly, the theme song was the best part of the show.
It all went downhill from there.
When everyone else was playing G.I. Joe and He-Man, I was playing COPS.
One thing that sticks in my mind was how dark some of the toy bios were in contrast to the show. Big Boss' toy has six cop badges on his shirt that were apparently taken from cops he's 'eliminated'.
GI Joe had a Longer Run tho. Man, .. so many Cool Characters and Toy Vehicles
@@shadowsage5185 not many toys have a longer run than gi joe. Gi joe even crossed with street fighter in the toy run. In the comics they crossed with Transformers.
I always wondered that about his coat. So I was right in guessing they were police badges.
@@Quintesson05 I guess so. I thought that we would get an in-show explanation to why he wears them, but at least we know now (and it's kinda messed up)
@@mapletouqe his police badges are no more dark than G.I. Joe villain Major Bludd. He's a former Australian Special Air Service (SAS) officer turned mercenary whose wanted for war crimes in various countries, including Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His package art and action figures feature him wearing *multiple* dog tags (taken from soldiers he's killed) as trophies.
Fighting Crime...in a Future Time! Man I loved this show and its toys.
It's crime fightin' time!
cr87129 -- ha ha, same here.
Toy Bro the 80s and early 90s had interesting concepts in cartoons.Real life robots in today's world might suck just the way police had acted on the public.Only if they act on those abusing power.
Toy Bro protecting Empire City from big boss and his gang of C.R.O.O.K.S..
Today, an ethnically diverse, multi-gender, prosthetic enhanced team would be labeled as brainwashing kids to be SJWs....
COPS! Fighting crime in the future time.
Dang... We really did have some good cartoons back in the 80s & early 90s. It was a good time to be a kid.
It was the BEST time to be a kid, I was born in 82, watched Captain Planet, Biker Mice from Mars, Toxic Crusaders, Darkwing Duck, Reboot all the way up to the late 90's when we STILL had after school cartoon shows and saturday morning cartoon shows. Kids these days would never know the joy we had after school and early Saturday mornings.
It was time to be a grown up with a VCR in the 80's and 90's.
Not everyone who watch those shows were kids. I still watch cartoons.
Mum-Universe damn right
Beats any of that animae stuff
Buttons McBoomboom is one of the coolest characters in the line. The Tommy Gun and the old school gangster swag was one of my favorite things about the show.
I can't believe I completely forgot about this series!!
I always felt this was one of the better written toy-pushers out there. Of course, my memory of it comes from when it was broadcast, and I was just 15 then.
I remember the pilot episode being significantly more violent than cartoons I was used to at the time. Something that was toned down for the series, but it still had guns firing bullets instead of the usual "pew pew" lasers of a lot of other shows.
Much as I like hearing about COPS, I wish you had gone into more info about the various characters on both the COPS and Crooks teams. Especially considering a LOT of juicy backstories between the various characters made for some great stories in the series run. Like the fact that Nightshade, the female cat-burglar ended up having a sort-of romantic relationship with the COPS specialist Mace. Or the backstory between K-9 specialist Bowzer and his cybernetic companion dog, Blitz (specifically how Blitz became a cyborg). Even the "obligatory" anti-drug episode, which saw Berzerko nearly dying of an overdose of a illegal street drug, which prompted Big Boss having the Crooks & Cops working together to stop the street dealer who was selling the drug.
Dude, 2 years after you made this comment it's inspired me to go look up episodes of the show... I watched some of it but evidently not all of it. The only thing I clearly remember was when they basically turned Blitz into a "fool proof" lie detector :P
BIG BOSS LOVES BIG BUCKS , BUT EVEN HE WON'T STOOP SO LOW TO SELLING DRUGS.
I GET MY KICKS FROM CRIME: Button McBoomBoom
That anti-drug episode was surprisingly pretty good.
@@alucard624 It was good in that it showed that the crooks aren’t that bad (and that there are different degrees of bad, and the idiom ‘better the devil you know’). After seeing that episode (namely ‘The Case of the Lowest Crime’), as well as two Transformers episodes (the movie, and one of the season 3 episodes, hence aired after the movie - ‘Ghost in the Machine’), and the G.I. Joe episode ‘The Greatest Evil’ (a two parter episode, and of the new DiC cartoon, hence aired after the 1987 G.I. Joe movie), I’d - if I could, hypothetically, meet the Autobots, G.I. Joe and the cops (yes, I’m aware they’re all fictional, but I said ‘hypothetically’) - tell them to no longer be enemies, and now merely be friends, with the Decepticons, Cobra and the crooks (as well as the Transylvania Pet Shop characters), after reminding the Autobots that Unicron’s worse than the Decepticons, G.I. Joe that the Headman’s worse than Cobra (and worse than the Transylvania Pet Shop characters) and the cops that Addictem’s worse than the crooks. This leads me to ask - what’s the point, in having a good side, and a bad side, when, sometimes, both sides will see eye to eye?
Sorry for the length of my comment, but - really - with my awareness, in some cartoons, that even the villains know about safety (where not even they’ll go that far, and they know their limits), I feel that the characters, in these shows, should consider being friends with who they think are their enemies.
It's great to see that packaging for G.I. Joe figures again.
I remember watching that show every once in a while, it was very unique.
This is a cartoon that would be popular today with the right marketing.
Great video, thank you for making it.
This toy line was way ahead of its time and doesn't get enough credit, so thanks for the great video. Not only was this line in the 6 inch scale but it was - for the time - super articulated. My greatest sorrow growing up were action figures who couldn't bend and move like the cartoons. While not my favorite line, I LOVED playing with these simply for the articulation fix they provided; plus the designs and costumes were unique and cool.
I like C.O.P.S. it's an excellent 80's cartoon show. 😀👍👮♂️
I loved this cartoon. I used to watch it when I was still in grade school. I remember that my parents didn't want me to watch it, so I used to have to sneak in episodes before they got home from work. I agree that the theme song was pretty epic.
I owned and loved the Button's McBoomBoom toy. I remember his character card stated he used "battery acid as after shave," which lead to my first conversation with my father about shaving.
I watched the heck out of C.O.P.S. as a kid, I really enjoyed it and I thought Bulletproof was the coolest dude. I'm still a fan of the design of Dr. Badvibes to this day, it's so iconic and such a classic mad scientist look. Plus "I'm having a brain storm!" *Tiny thunderclouds*
I think I just learned *this month* that Dr. Badvibes was a *he*. I always assumed that Badvibes, Miss Demeanor, and Nightshade were the only female Crooks.
Easily one of my favorite shows and toylines growing up. Though it didn't have the staying power of my other true love as a kid, Transformers, it had a lifelong impact on me. This is going to sound cheesy as all get out, but C.O.P.S. was one the original reasons I ended up in my current law enforcement career. The other being my aunt that was a sergeant in DC Metro. I was always the kid in class that went after the guy that said "I want to be an astronaut" saying I wanted to be a policeman.
ReaverPrime nice
That is awesome! I only hope after all we've seen with American cops that you're one of the good ones. Crazy days these days...
Trump said "Dirty Cops and Scum work at the FBI".
"Sir, you're going to need a new torso..."
"Okay do it."
"Well, unfortunately torso replacement falls under pre-existing conditions, so..."
You win
Didn’t talk about the villains. The dude with the guns in his chest. The mad doctor with visible brain 🧠
@@tonygriego6382 Buttons was awesome
Jimmyju76--Buttons McBoomBoom was the best crook & one of the best characters on the show but for some reason gets little respect. He wasn't even mentioned on the show's ending credits. At least he got his own toy even if it didn't look much like him.
MissDemeanor
Didnt they have a guy with a nail machine gun
Dr Bad Vibes !!!!
Best name for a super visible super-smart super villain Evarrr lol
With 65 episodes they told more stories than most shows can cover in 3 or 4 seasons. I watched and enjoyed it, a friend of mine had a DVD set of 20 episodes of COPS convinced he had the whole series. I told him over and over that there were waaaay more.
Loved COPS! I have BP Vest, Buttons McBoomboom and Bowser. As a little black kid in the 80s not only seeing cool black hero action figure also being the head of a crime prevention unit blew my mind!
COPS was one of my favorite cartoons I watched when I was a kid. I still enjoy watching it even as an adult 30 years later. It made me want to be a cop, but that didn't happen.
I definitely watched COPS! Your channel just keeps bringing me back to the best years of my life. That is to say, the best years of my life before I discovered girls. Nonetheless, the second best years of my life! Keep them coming!
jethroblings I second that!
"C.O.P.S. (Central Organization of Police Specialists). Fighting crime in a future time. Protecting Empire City from Big Boss and his gang of crooks." I love the cartoon.
*SIGH* I don't think they'll EVER have shows like that again; You and I lived in the 'Golden Age' of television, my friend...
You and me both; I was born in '71 so the 80's was my decade!
Chris Mayer I agreed with you.
My brother had a toy of Bulletproof. I remember enjoying the show, but didn't have any of the toys myself.
Love your vids man. I enjoy learning about the shows i used to watch as a kid. It's nostalgia combined with education. And i can drink beer now. it's a win win situation!
That last sentence is so very true. It's one of those shows that maybe two other friends saw and everyone else just thinks I had some weird fever dream.
Thanks much for this video, great as always, loved this show, may or may not have scripted an imaginary reboot with my brother several years back.
BEST TOY GALAXY VIDEO EVER!!!! Cops was my jam! i still have it stuck in my head odd 30 yrs later.
best cops fig was Buttons McBoomBoom! more cops more cops Dan! DAN!!! more cops please!
I just bought a Buttons McBoomBoom last week :D Quite a lucky find.
Man, I found Buttons a few weeks ago, and declared him one of the best figures of all time.
why is it no one remembers COPS ?? I want marvel legend style COPS now!!!
I remember them. Great show.
Just starting rewatching COPs on Tubi since the 80s. I never owned any of the toys, but i thought the cartoon looked great and show had some cheesy humor that I enjoyed as a kid.
For those who remember:. "C.O.P.S.! Roll call...."
Highway, Mainframe, Longarm, Bowser and Blitz, Sundown, Hardtop, Mirage, Bullseye, Mace, Barricade, and they call me Bulletproof.
Thank u dude!
Joseph Shmo thanks, I believe Autocorrect is to blame.
@@richardrobart-morgan3407 CROOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!
Cassius Plot please explain your comment.
I now have the whole theme song playing in my head on repeat. Amazing the things we retain
I still have nearly all of the C.O.P.S. figures in the collection
and some of the animation cels from their cartoon intro. (still
one of the best drawn intros, in my opinion) I loved both the toyline
and cartoon and it was awesome hearing the history of both. ;)
Great video, as always, and keep 'em coming! ^_^
I feel so old now... great cartoon and the toyline was good too.👍
I watched the series as a kid. One of my friends in grade school had the toys. It was a great experience as kid playing with GI Joe, Transformers, and COPS!
I loved this show as a kid. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers it. Cops, mask, and gobots were some of my favorite shows growing up.
I loved this show… it always seemed more mature than other similar shows.
I seen C.O.P.S. back in 1988 and now i have one of the vol.2 of the dvd and one figure right now but plan on getting more when i can.
Such a good show. I actually bought the dvd set a few years ago, and still go back to it once in a while :D
These were some of the best made toys that I remember from my childhood. Oversize GI Joe figures with multiple points of possibility. What kid wouldn't love that?!
I loved that show and had quite a few of the toys and vehicles. My dad waxed nostalgic over the paper roll caps and showed me what he used to do with them when he was a kid: Take a whole roll, wind it up REAL tight, and smash it with a hammer. BOOM!! Yup, my dad... the man bearing half of the responsibility for my health and safety.
In the first issue of the C.O.P.S. comic, we learn that Big Boss blames Bulletproof for the imprisonment and death of his identical twin brother, so he has Rock Crusher blow up the 647th Precinct with Bulletproof inside.
After Bulletproof gets injured and is operated on, he decides to form the C.O.P.S. team to take the fight to Big Boss and his Crooks.
You see, Bulletproof and Big Boss respectively leading their armies just to get back at one another is one big chain of revenge.
In the cartoon, they made it pretty clear: Bulletproof is the good guy, and Big Boss is the bad guy. But in the comic, things are a little murky, so you really can't blame either of them for wanting their revenge, and that's what makes the C.O.P.S. comic worlds apart from the cartoon.
I loved COPS! BP was one of my favorite characters on any show. The intro animation and music were awesome enough. The villains we're also an interesting bunch.
I loved this show! "Longarm" was my favorite C.O.P.
I still think those figures were ahead of their time. GI Joe level articulation but on a 5-6 inch figure. Lots of good detail too. I actually sought out lots of figures from that line
Plus, having a black protagonist was pretty rare for a cartoon from that era.
COPS was really good when they moved away from Big Boss Man's crew to that team of crazies led by a Joker type character. One guy was a human projectile lol
Possibly Hyena and Bullit (the former who I think only spoke in two episodes - ‘The Case of the Criminal Games’ and ‘The Case of Big Boss’s Big Switch’, and the latter whose speaking role I think was only ‘The Case of the Criminal Games’) [both crooks].
I loved those character designs and the animation (at least in my memories) was really nicely done.
IIRC it was Bart Sears who designed them. Surprised that wasn't mentioned in the video
Hell yeah, COPS! I had Berserko who looked great with that popped collar and HUGE guns. I loved that cap action.
I definitely still have some of these AND Police Academy figures
For my 10th birthday in 1987, I got almost the entire line of toys!!! That was a good birthday!!
Glad you mentioned the theme song. It was easy to play on my Mom's piano, and it's still in my head today.
I loved COPS! Great show, great animation, I wish the toys had reached my part of the world.
I loved this show from 80s
Cops was an amazing cartoon and toyline! I remember watching it all the time as a kid and drooling over the coolness of the toys on the peg boards at K-Mart. Netflix should grab up the licence
I remember seeing this series when I was ten (born 2006) on a now-defunct streaming service called Shomi (it closed in 2017).
I only started to rewatch the series now (in the way you just mentioned), and I forgot how cool the series actually was.
I had no idea toys were made for it though, and it's a shame they aren't sold anymore.
Anyway, I do think it's cool that you talked about this series.
It was a Real bummer u had to leave for school and miss shows like this.
Fighting Crime in a Future Time! I still remember that catchphrase.
Longarm was always my favorite
C.O.P.S. was one of those shows I grew up watching where I went crazy for the opening credits, then became indifferent once the episode really began. I had a bunch of these toys though, and they were superb. Toy Galaxy, you have some good taste in toys! I don't know if you have done one yet, but I would love to see an Exo-Squad episode!
I felt the same way about Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. I thought the best part of the show was Ernie Anderson's 20 seconds of dialogue. Then after the rest of opening theme, the show was bland. It was so bad I really felt bad for Sawboss and his villians. The "good guys" were assholes. Jayce, Herc, and Gillian constantly treated Flora and Oon like shit.
My favorite character was the villain Nightshade, apparenty the insiration behind Catherine Zeta Jones character in Entrapment. I remember doing flips and somersaults underwater in the pool with this song in my head!!
I LOVED COPS! Only had APES and he was the only figure the correct size to ride along with Michael Knight in KITT.
I LOVE that cartoon, and I'd LOVE to see a reboot!
With all CoCs(cops of color), then make whitey the villian(s)... Perhaps female CoCs
I dont see that working
I would love to see Paramount, Warner Bros., Allspark Pictures, DC Films, and Saban Films team up to turn C.O.P.S. into a live-action movie.
@@keelychow4569 I've been saying for years that I would love to see C.O.P.S. turned into a live-action movie. There's such great potential for a movie there.
Me too!!!!!
Man... I saw the small youtube thumbnail and was blasted in the face with one of those vivid memories of my mostly forgotten childhood. "Can it be?" I wondered. "There's no way. No. Way. Someone made a video about those cartoons I never heard about ever again." Imagine my surprised delight when it actually was exactly what I thought. I love this weird place that is the internet and all its wonderful gems.
Dearly love the theme song; it remains one of my all-time favorites.
Had a few of the figures at one time.
Loved the TV Show.
Excellent video
they showed this on USA networks and i enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure
I was not 100% sure if it was USA, but many of these short lived cartoons from the late 80's - mid 90's seemed to end up there in the early morning hours before school started, so is it a wonder they did not last longer? I think not.
USA Networks was a monster with all of the cartoon series they carried in the 90s and late 80s. Surprised the host didn't mention that Missy Elliot took her name from this cartoon series.
It was WGN in my town.
I'm too young to actually remember watching the show but I know it was a favorite of mine. What I do remember is how excited I was when Fox premiered the reality show Cops thinking it was a live action version and explaining to my grandparents who all the "characters" were based on from C.O.P.S. and all the backstory.
it was called cops and robbers where I grew up, I had a ton of their toys too I loved that show as a kid!
There was a children’s book, by married couple Janet and Allan Ahlberg, called ‘Cops and Robbers’.
I got a DVD when I was a kid
i found this at the Dollar Store ..2 dvd box sets !
Dude, when I was in 1st or 2nd grade we used to play COPS on the school playground. No joke, we would fight over who got to be Longarm.
Even though I grew up in the 80s, I totally missed this show. Never heard of it until a few weeks ago, when I found a bunch of the figures at Goodwill. Really good toys, way ahead of their time in scale and articulation.
Long arm was my dude back in the day
Bravestarr please
I'm always so happy someone else knows what this is!
That horse was so boss!
Was really hoping they'd make a live action movie C.O.P.S
This channel is my childhood told in episodic form... every episode is like "oh yah! I remember having one of those"...
I absolutely remember watching and loving the 1993 reruns when I was 10-11. Some people had Transformers and GI Joe. I was a COPS fan.
One of the COPS is the son of a GIJOE. Checkpoint is Beach Head's son.
All three shows are, interestingly, by Hasbro (implying that all three could be related) [hence, as I like associating Transylvania Pet Shop with G.I. Joe, I like to think that, had it had a toy line, it too would have been made by Hasbro, as well as I associate Transylvania Pet Shop with Transformers, given that Transformers and G.I. Joe seem related].
@@michaelweech6432 Transformers and GI Joe have had several comicbook crossovers, with a few different publishers
I loved the show. Too bad they didn't make any Mainframe, Mirage, Ms. Demeanor and Nightshade figures.
Same here, I would gladly purchased them just like I did with Scarlett, Cover Girl, Lady Jaye and Jinx from G.I. Joe. C.O.P.S. was a really fun toy line despite it only lasting one year. I loved watching the cartoon series as well, I just purchased the old Shout Factory DVD release which also has concept artwork for the characters and the backgrounds. Watching the show again really brings back a lot fun memories for me.
I think the argument has always been that "boys shouldn't/wouldn't play with female action figures", so most toylines avoided creating any, if only one!! This is why Wonder Woman was the only female amongst the Super Powers/Super Friends toys of the 80s and Storm the only X-Man during it's early 90s run for a time.
Yeah, but the concept of female action figures (or figures with a figure) were a rather touchy topic back then... as it was GI JOE had only four; Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Cover Girl and the Baroness to the 50+ male figs.
@@chrismayer3919 Don't forget Zaranna of the Drednock's and Jinx, the female ninja on the G.I. Joe team. Glad that Hasbro has diversified G.I. Joe even more in terms of females characters for both Joe and Cobra since then.
Being born in the 3rd world, most 80's shows are my 90s.
I remeber COPS vividly and wasted a lot of time looking for that song w/o voices for my ringtone
I used to have some of the episodes on VHS back in the day when I was a kid.
I watched COPS show along with Bionic Six.
Can you give a history of Crystar: Crystal Warriors?
Huh. I just bought the complete run of the cartoon series.
I had a couple of random figures and saw some of the cartoon, but the only thing I really remember was the helicopter with giant red & blue cockpit canopies and how it was a pain to actually get figures into it correctly.
I remember the Robocop toys also using cap strips as a gimmick as well.
Yeah, I watched the cartoon. This brings back the good ol' days back in the 80's when I was a kid. COPS, Transformers, Robotech, He-Man, Astroboy and so on. Thanks for the nostalgia.
I loved the cartoon, but never had any of the toys
Rob M same. I used to role play this at recess with my friends. we recreated gadgets and weapons with folded paper, tape and a staplegun then ran around the playground like euphoric idiots.
*sniffle & tearwipe*
See what you made me do😢
Ditto
loved the series, never had the toys....as a kid; I rectified that in my adult years ;)
I had 2 figures and the Motorcycle... I had the option to get a 2nd vehicle with Figure (HardTop and his tank thing) and I kick myself to this day... even though it was only a few years later "I put away my childish things" and handed down my whole collection (MOTU, Turtles, COPS, Wrestling) to my Nephews...and no my knowledge None of them survived to the present
"Crimes a wastin "
They need to create Boomerang 2. They need to bring back C.O.P.S. Dinosaucers, and other underrated cartoons. I enjoy watching this since I was a kid.
One of my favorite cartoons growing up had few of toys. Favorite villain was dude wit the guns coming out his chest
The opening was great; the rest of the show? Not so much
Yeah, because of the lack of violence, fighting and action in it, especially for a police cartoon. It was made more toned down, kid friendly, which is no wonder G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was a more better show.
I watched this show as a kid, it was just ok.
This was my favorite show in the 80s me and my brother Ray would rush home from school just to watch it shows were so much better after the show it would air a clip of one of the crooks doing something bad like joing a gang or stealing and you would see them get arrested the message was to teach young kids of what not to do.
The design of the chopper was cool, plus the pilot was hilarious. Apparently he was a bit of a klutz, but a top notch pilot
I loved C.O.P.S.!! The toys were dope!
Nice video
Thanks for this one. I absolutely loved COPS when I was younger, the toys and comics were fantastic. The characters were individually so cool and designed really well.
I loved that show. One of the last with an amazing theme song
I loved cops. I never had the toys though. I wanted the dude with the dog who had a siren on its head.
TheTrueDecepticreep Bowser and Blitz
That's the only one that I had and I LOVED the set. I remember somehow losing the dog's bottom jaw very shortly after getting them. Also, I'm pretty sure that the dog had a police light (not siren) on his back that turned with a knob on his belly.
The series may or may not have similarities with The Untouchables. For instance, the name "Bullet Proof Vess" sounds a bit like "Elliott Ness".
Mind blown. Never made that connection.
Another similarity with The Untouchables, is that the main villain of C.O.P.S., Big Boss, was obviously based on Al Capone.
The vagueness with which I remember this show is astounding, yet I remember it all the same. Had a good origin for the main character.
the episode where the robodog can detect the truth vs lies, then promptly gets the two scrambled will always be burned in my brain. Totally epic!
