- Welcome back. Today we give a tour of beautiful Clearlake Ca. The algae is back and the water is heating up. The largest surface area lake of California and a top bass fishing lake. Join us for a small lesson on way it’s like living with a living lake. Thank you for joking us.

I grew up in Clearlake and although it was filled with algae, if you didn’t have a pool, you jumped in the lake. Especially after consecutive 100 degree days. Probably not the healthiest, but satisfying and many great memories. Great vid 👍🏾

I grew up spending summers on the lake at the house my grandfather built in 1922. The algae was just something we dealt with. We had a beautiful view of the mountain from our beach new Oak Cove. Will always love it.
I've been skiing and fishing that lake since 1971, it was never clear and the algae situation has not changed much for better or worse. The avg depth of the lake is 30 ft, it gets warm and grass/algae like warm water. It's not a sewage issue as a very high percentage of every residence/resort had to move to public sewer hook ups in the mid 70's. You had to fill your tank with rock or gravel. It is a natural life cycle for that lake. It has no natural inflow except for rain runoff at the north end of the lake, otherwise it is fed from underground springs mostly located in Soda Bay. Great fishing, great skiiing, crappy economy...... It is like stepping back in time.

Yep, and based on the bass that thrive in this lake, it's a VERY healthy ecosystem.
Vacationed there every summer with my parents in the 50s early 60s. Nothing has changed except the increased population.

@@life_of_riley88 My wife and I spent a weekend at the lake, and was once relaxing, watching a mother duck with two ducklings swimming around. All of a sudden the mother duck sounded off, and all we saw was a very large mouth, a splash, and the duckling was gone! We were shocked, not knowing what "evil" lurked in the waters, and til today only suspect it was a very large bass! The lake must have some monster fishes!
Talk to the elders of the Pomo Tribe. They can tell a very interesting history of Clear Lake. Lake County Obsidian is the best quality in North America. Tribes from all over would come to trade for it. I had Pomo friends from the west end of the lake. Went to school with. Learned alot from their families.
I will definitely look for an opportunity to learn more from the elders of this area. The history is so rich I never hear the same stories twice. The Pomo tribe behind us is where the Casino wars were in 95. It would have been something special to be here at the time they controlled this area before everyone else showed up. I lived there over 30 years. In ClearLake, and Lower Lake area. Just like to say mount Konocti. isn’t the caldron . The lake is the caldron. Also would like you to show the northern end of the lake. Not so much algae. I still hav e many friends and family there. Thank for the video.
I've been fishing this lake since 1969. I remember when the lake was actually clear. The algae blooms are more pronounced now with the lack of rainfall.

@@hyssean12 it used to be clear. My grandfather is 85 and has been going there since it was a dirt road and there weren’t any houses. It got worse because of increasing temperatures, low rainfall, and bass fishermen not cleaning their boats properly.
I remember that very well too. Same with the Russian river, a lot of the perennial creeks that ran through the Sonoma and Napa valleys even Santa Rosa creek. They used to be loaded with fish too.
Everything is gone now. The drought finished them off.

That’s gotta be either Pirates Cove or Lily Cove. I grew up there and had friends that lived out on the Gooseneck. I lived off of North Drive for a short time. So many memories coming back now. Never did much swimming in the lake. We usually would go to either Blue Lakes, outside of Potter Valley to hippie rock, Hidden Valley Lake or just head out to the cliffs at Berryessa. Thanks for sharing
I remember the water was nearly clear at the beach at Austin Park in the early 1950's. Kind of the clarity of a quartz crystal. Pieces of water plants floating on the waves and fish touching our feet in the warm water. The waves were fun.

Visited this weekend and the algae smell like sewage, I don’t understand how anyone can live near the lake and tolerate the stench
Yes in town and down by the water it can be bad. We are usually fortunate the wind doesn’t blow it our way. We are at the deepest part of the lake so the algae is often not bad in our area. Thank you for watching.

I remember in the 80's durning late summer the alge was so bad on the south end of the lake that we could throw small rocks on the lake and they would just sit right on top of the alge .
You mean by small rocks 4 inches and under? I've bounced rocks bigger than my fist and instead of sinking they just sit there. Sometimes they sink slowly which is kinda satisfying in some way. Like watching old ships sink. Into Green Hell.

Great video. I have a place in Nice. I don't mind the algae. I just swim through it. Like you said it's mostly around the shore. Also when there's algae the water is sooo nice and warm like butter :)

@@grandpaslakehouse-homestea6113 that is so true. probably couldn't afford it if the lake was like lake tahoe. Lake tahoe is really cold also so it's not as nice as swimming in Clear lake, in my opinion.

A couple of corrections.
To create a distinction between the city, and the body of water, the lake is Clear Lake (2 words), and the city is called Clearlake.
Clear Lake is the largest NATURAL lake in California. It is also the oldest in the state, and many will argue that it is the oldest existing lake in North America. The lake with the largest surface area in CA is Lake Shasta (Technically called Shasta Reservoir).

I was just there this past week. Konocti harbor was the only place with deep water I got huge bass. But the smell was terrible been coming to this lake since I can remember with my grandparents things have definitely changed for the worst

Way back when I lived in the area the water level was much, much higher and there was no green algae and they advised against eating any fish caught there because of the mercury levels leaching into the lake.

Clearlake was named after the quality of the air around the lake.

The lake was much cleaner when I was a kid and we moved to Kelseyville in 1977. The air quality is still good, especially for those of us who have asthma.
@teamcougars We vacationed at Clear Lake in the summer of 1971. It was clear -- my sister & I bathed in it, no problem. There were little fish that nibbled on your toes if you stood still. Also, I remember hot springs bubbling up from the bottom of the lake. It is all unrecognizable now. 😖
I used to live clearlake. My friends and I have sailed many times. I worked at konocti harbor. It is too sad to see this. Wow. Too nitrogen. Too many vineyards flow into a almost contained system. The pH is off. Restore the most natural pH and it should help
Water + sunlight = algae. But that is a bit excessive. Can indicate sewage running into the lake. Anywhere's, thanks for the video.
I almost bought a Nursery that was for sale in the late 80s. My father and I met with the "elders" and got the impression this was no place to raise my two sons and they implied this was a "swinger community for adults." I figure not much has changed. BTW, the property was dirt cheap. Beautiful Lake.

Too much fertilizer run off from the pear and grape growers. The algae loves it.
We have similar Cyanobacteria/Algae bloom issue's in Florida lakes & River's also during the hottest summer mos caused by fertilizer runoff (People insisting on "perfect green lawns",Golf courses, Industrial polluters/paper mills, Sugar cane fields, septic tanks, etc ETC) that cause extensive fish kill's & can even kill your pet's if they swim in it and SEVERAL people have lost limbs & even their lives by contaminated water entering thru a tiny pin prick caused by being pinched by a crab etc etc. I hate to hear that California is being affected by Algae blooms as well & HOPE the silver lining from ALL the recent flooding rains will be of some help to perhaps flush some of it away. Would love to visit sometime in the future.

We took the boat there many times during the summers of the 60s and 70s. I remember catching lots of crappie. Guess those are gone now.

Depends on the location and the season. I went swimming in the lake during the floods and storms a couple of years ago. The water was cold, muddy and churny ( the fun part, don't try it without swim fins and goggles.) Then I'd hit water that was inexplicably clear and warm. It's a weird lake sometimes.
I'm too old for that kind of foolishness.
They should dig an inlet and outlet creek to keep the water circulating and therefore cleaner, not a stagnant bowl of runoff water.
lake county does have a number of creeks that flow into Clearlake and a large creak that flows out. I've lived here since 95 and the water quality and the alge blooms like list have only become a thing in the last 15 years. the temperatures and droughts have gotten steadily worse the water levels have steadily declined to the point now that I've never seen.it doesn't help that we provide alot of yolo countys water. they own the rights to lake county's water.when you look at the history of this lake it's sad to see it change so much so fast,it's one of if not north America's oldest lake.its a 2.5 million year old living lake that seams to be dieing before my eyes.

Uh..it fills at one end of the lake (Rodman slough), draining out at cache creek on the other side of the lake. It's also spring fed in several places too. And dig to where?
I've watched a lot of watercraft hitting the green water or better yet running over a thick mat of the stuff. Gunks up everything too.
I worked for the lakeport school district for 17 yrs and some. Times u miss it after 2 yrs of drug abuse I got my kids back and moved to Montana buy some time I hope to revisit my kids were born there and my ex mother in law is still there just don't let the dark side of the lake eat ypu alive

Yes it is full of history. Even a story of the US Military bringing a war ship to the lake to fight natives. Today our claim to fame is Record breaking wild fires and being one of the poorest County's is Ca. Thank you for watching, you have been a huge inspiration to us.

Wow, super interesting! Thank you for sharing. I had only been a handful of times and have seen the the warnings on the website about the Water being low.
There must be some way to clean all this crap up. The community has to come together to make it happen.
A clean lake would be visually appealing and our tourism would be way better but we would loose way more. The lake being "dirty" is caused by shallow water with hot springs created by a volcano. The large amount of nutrition this creates is what gives life to the many fish that call it home and why Clearlake is one of the top Bass fishing lakes in the world. Also being the largest surface lake in CA full of algae means this lake cleans the CO2 from the air making our county one of the cleanest air in Ca. The Nitrogen issue with the lake started when sewage systems dumped run off into the lake. Today’s issue continues to be high Nitrogen due to the algae cycle and continued nitrogen runoff tho most of it today is fertilizer.
The shallow nature and high temperature of the water promotes the growth. Only way to reduce this issue is to physically remove the nitrogen content which would mean actually removing material from the lake. Not removing dead material simply just runs the perpetual nitrogen cycle with it getting worse over time.
Would you let your dog swim in this? Has this killed rental and tourism?
It's killed dogs. Don't let them swim in crusty water or split pea soup. Especially if it has a blue or purple sheen to it. Blue is cyanobacteria and purple is something worse. Try Blue lakes or one of the smaller reservoirs. Just be careful with the timing. That's important. Sometimes its even safe.
Clear Lake was actually named for the clear air of Lake County. The water was never clear. We just swam off the dock in Buckingham yesterday and it was beautiful.
They should put whatever in Lake Michigan that eats all the algae

The water is looking great. Water levels were up about 1ft as of yesterday. I am not sure of the ramp updates. Be extra careful, A lot of rocks off shore that were exposed a couple days ago are now back underwater and hidden from boaters. Thank you for watching.
He left out the raw sewage that was going into the lake in the 70's
I also left out the growers dumping their waste water and the closed sulfur mine that sits feet from the lakes edge. I have to save something for future videos lol. At one point the sewage was dumped into Lake Tahoe as well and they actually clear cut the entire basin at one point. I will have a difficult time finding a place in this world without a bad history. In 2000 when ever my family and I drove through there it was deeper they had boats on those wooden docks houses where nice and lots of people swimming having fun now its low and smells like dirty diapers all the way through 😢 so sad

Clear Lake is actually clear all year!
Even though there are massive algae blooms there's still very clear water and clear lake and the visibility is around 5 to 15 ft or better. Which is considered a "clear" lake.
In some spots, you can seen the bottom and fish sitting in 20 ft of water on Clear Lake.
It's pretty impressive to watch the Grebes working shad in the lake. It's like an underwater Grebe show. That's how clear!
What you're seeing especially in the fall is what's on the surface, being thicker in the shallows but there's still very clear water in the lake. It's actually a very healthy ecosystem just not as appealing as we'd like to see sometimes.
It's not necessarily the best lakes certain parts of the year or you would want to swim from the shore but it really depends upon what you're going to Clear Lake for or what you're doing in the water. I went to high school in Clear Lake and it was kind of a bummer then and that place is a bummer now. But I keep coming back for the lake itself.

A centrifugal separation system on a boat would be nice. And a compressor to squeeze out the juices. With a runner craft to deliver the cubes to the shore. This guck doesnt have to be dry cubes either but not sludge. We'd need a lot of them. Pucks. Hockey pucks.

I've seen jet skies glug and lose speed temporarily when blasting through a thick mat. Green stuff everywhere and once stopped it's hard to clear. Then you are..plugged.

Thank you for watching. I always thought an Ice festival would be a lot of fun and may bring the temp of the lake down and bring in tourism. A weekend Of ice sculpture and food topped off with an event throwing all the ice into the lake. It probably wouldn’t work but sounds fun.

The lack of rain definitely doesn’t help. The lake does this every year when it’s hot and calm. Even on the best of years when the lake is approaching flood levels it will still turn nasty in the heat of summer. Between being so shallow and full of natural hot spring there is no way around it. When I was a teenager we had a neighbor with a daughter who refused to get close to the water, always telling her family how gross it is. That is till one day I made a comment in front of her abut how good my acne was after swimming in the lake. The next day she was in the water. @@JackSon-cs5vk at least in our area the water was definitely way worse on average in the 90s and early 2000s. The last couple years we have had more clear water at our dock than bad water. Hopefully I can get some filming done on the lake soon. You wouldn’t believe how clear it is this morning.

I have not ever personally been on the island as it is privately owned but from what I understand there are no snakes. Today wile the island is privately owned the Pomo Native people have been trying to get back the land they call sacred for many years. The Pomo's history here is even wilder than the water. This is Show and Tell right? Tell me, why hasn't something done by the homeowners around the lake get together to pick this green glob up in baskets?
The same reason our roads look like gravel, our power is shut off regularly in the fall, dams around the country are failing, gas lines are failing and tunnels are 50 times the original budget. Politics. There have been many attempts at doing something about the lake even state grants that are never approved. I wish I had a better answer or solution. The entire county population is less than 80,000 and when it comes to anything we don’t have the power to push legislation. Thank you for watching we appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Awhile back the Japanese offered to get rid of the algae, to incorporate it into foodstuff, the board of commisioners wanted them to pay to do it! Japan told em to ,effectively, go jump in a lake. Now they can't do that even if they wanted to. The bass fishing is extraordinary though and there are still great places to swim etc. If you know where to go.

I hear conflicting information on that and I have not been around long enough to clarify. Although my neighbors have been here since 1954 and they have said the lake always changed with the seasons. I look forward to the winter when I can film the lake when it is clear. From November to April we can see the rocks and the fish and have even been able to see the fish nest at the end of our dock. Well over 20 feet deep. I know the big part of the lake doesn't clear up like we do but that is the most shallow area of the lake and we are fortunate enough to be in the deepest part of the lake. No it wasn't clear 40 years ago. It was much like it is today, good years, and bad years.
In ancient times, when the lake was split in two, and much larger and deeper than it is now, there is a very good possibility that the water was much more clear than it is today.

Been living here for 22 years now. This place has changed so much. So many new people. There’s actually traffic now and I no longer see the same strangers over and over again. The town is even making changes. It feels like a mini San Francisco. Which makes me really sad. Hopefully the people who just moved here go back to where they came from. I miss the old lake. A little quiet sleepy country town. 😢
