Boulder bags, been using the ultimate framer set-up, took the back bag off about a year into it and use it just for small stuff when I don't need to carry racks of 16s and 8s

I've got an occasional belt that I love! With several customizations I've made, its absolutely perfect for me. Sheep skin belt pad and suspenders.. it's the most comfortable belt I've ever worn.
I recently went on the hunt for a second set of bags to keep setup for for a different job, so I wouldn't need to keep switching tools out every day.
I stumbled upon Akribis leather out of Canada... actually picked up a new set of akribis bags off ebay. The build quality is incredible! The layout of the bags are perfect with many nice accessories available. They only accept a 2" belt, so I mix matched a 2" occidental belt with the sheepskin liner... it may still be the honeymoon stage, but I honestly think I like the akribis bags a little bit better than my beloved Occidental's. Both have nearly identical layouts (after the customizations to the occidental) but the akribis bags are a little bit shorter, which I prefer, and seem a bit lighter.

Nice! I love that Akribis knows to put the tape and speed square on the left and the marking and cutting tools on the right for a right hander. This is something that most tool belt companies get wrong. Now, if could only find a 25’ tape that reads right to left when held in my left hand instead of having to read the numbers upside down.

If you showed up on a job site as a experienced carpenter with anything less than that in the US you'd catch grief for days.
You make some good points about weight and size, yet belts that large are basically universal among tradesman over here. Also the Americans got 50 lbs on you easy.

I’m a carpenter in Canada and finally got an occidental leather pouch this past Christmas didn’t like it at first as the the tape holder was in a different spot from my old pouch which I had for 6 years but now I’m used to it I love it there definitely the nicest pouch out there I’ve come across keep up the videos Scott there great

my 7pocket framer is the same. If your right handed the tape should be on the left side so you can measure with your left and accurately mark with your right hand. I wish they added more small pockets for bits and shit too. Having loose tools in the belt sucks. So mu h waster space that could have had straps or pockets.

As a production carpenter in theatre I totally get your comment about tool belts being light and more sports like. I have to crawl, climb and get in and out of tight spaces. I’ve recently got some gear from Diamondback another US tool belt manufacturer, they do really tough nylon bags that weigh nothing. There belts are good but I chose to use their bags with an Occidental belt and belt liner, (with the sheep skin liner) and I’m finding that combo works very well as suspenders don’t really work when your climbing a lot. Great site!

I have a question for you Scot if you don’t mind.
I was in New Zealand working as a carpenter, down in Nelson.. But I am originally from the U.K.. made the brave move to come and have my first year abroad to contribute to the rebuild and hopefully make Nz my home long term but had to come back due family reasons, looking to come back though.. anyway I digress..
I got a Taurus Tool belt when I was over there and I was debating getting an Occidental before I got the Taurus..
Which in your opinion is the better belt for all round carpentry.. framing, and general.
Occidental had the more pouches.. but is that necessarily a good thing? Kiwi chippies.. seem to like the Taurus.. and use it for both.
What’s your opinion.. which do you think is better having used both.. or both of you use both.
    Cheers. 👍

I have the same belt, and I agree with you that the tape should be kept on your left side. But I keep mine when you said a chalk line could go, and then that way you can actually use all the tool holders to their full potential. I see a lot of guys wearing these bags and not using the pockets the way they were designed to be worn.

Mate, I'm a Tasmanian 3rd year apprentice builder. Loving your channel and think there's lots in common with how we roll here in Tassie. I bought an Occidental belt online and love the build quality. I, like yourself, copped so much stick for the size of it. Apple picking bags was the insult for me! haha. I actually found the size too annoying and I worked with some younger guys running really slick tool belt set ups. So basically what I did was stripped it down to the belt itself. Sold the big bags. Replaced the big bags with a small fixings bag and have hammer holsters a tape from and a chisel holster all close to the body and low profile. I swapped out the occi suspenders for some lighter (and Australian) Buckaroo suspenders. Now I honestly feel like I have the ultimate belt. Its feels so light and performance. Yet super durable.

whats your size of the belt? is it medium?
im thinking to buy occidental leather and my waist is 30-32” but i dont want wear pouches on my back like you in the video.
    so whats your opinion mate?
should i go to small as they recommend or go larger one to have buckle and pouches on the middle of my waist and thigh.
(the only problem i have is i cant try on it, for i have to buy oversea)

    • @adamrivers7951
      @adamrivers7951 5 років тому +2

Occidental has a sizing chart, but if your pants size is a 32" I believe they say to add 4 or 5" for your tool belt size. I think a medium would still work for you. I have a occidental leather 9850 medium. I'm 6 foot and 165 pounds 32" pant size and it fits awesome. Costly, but we wear them everyday so worth it

I have the 7 pocket framers belt and as much as I love it, it is heavy and bulky.
The pocket pants like blackladder, are handy but not at all a replacement for a belt.
The best option I have seen so far is the tool vests. Everyone I know who wears one swears by it.
Great for indoor work too because the pockets on a tool belt are bulky when walking around the Inside of a house

Cheers Mate! -Matt

Hi Scott. I bought one of the lighter ones from Loven Tools a couple of years back and then got the harness off Amazon in the States. Did you trim the ends of the harness to fit? It seems to be one size fits all but when I adjusted mine to my body size, there seemed to be an awful lot of excess strap left to tuck away. I was just wondering how you found it adjusting yours/

I like the CLC Signature Series. The are the nylon corduroy, so they are very light. They don't last as long as the Occidental Leathers, but I still get at least 4 years out of them. And been mostly a house framer, I need the bigger pouches because of the bigger tools I carry.

I really perved over the occidental range for a long time, but the price was really offputting at the time on the money i was earning, so instead i opted for the toughbuilt tool belts.
What attracted me to them was that they are modular and can connect/disconnect via clips. this way i can have a pouch for a dedicated job (1st fix, 2nd fix, finals, whatever) and honestly i get on well with it. i just need the braces to add support because they pull on my hips and in turn pull my trousers down from time to time haha!
but other than the toughbuilt tool belts, if i hadn't already invested in their range, occidental all day long.
Pricey, probably the most expensive tool belts, but personally from what i've seen and heard, theyre worth every penny(or cent).
Keep up the videos Scott, as a fellow chippy, and as a man whos tavelled NZ (and loved the country so much i got an NZ tattoo!), i look forward to every one of your videos that comes up on my feed.

_"I bought this tool belt when I was in Canada. It was quite pricy. Here's a list of the prices in various currencies."_
    >Proceeds to list several currencies, but not the price in Canadian Dollars.
Aside from that little oddity, I just bought this belt, but I got the "Leather Work Suspenders" instead of the "Stronghold Suspension System". That's the suspenders that are just leather, with some leather pads on the shoulders instead of the padded nylon section with the pencil pockets on it. It was $125 instead of $175. Given how I always see people wearing the padded nylon version of the suspenders instead of the plain leather ones, I'm a little worried that I shot myself in the foot with that decision. I thought the padded nylon stuff would be too heavy and hot, and wouldn't justify the price.
Has anyone tried the other suspender system with this belt, or a similarly heavy belt?

It all depends on how you build (set up) and what priority you have on things. Occies are made to last. Period. Hence the not so sporty weight and features. I have been framing in the US for a while, and the whole concept is every needed tool for the given task at hand always. Reload for next task, if it requires a different setup. Framing on a full floor with 2x all over can get messy fast, and you don't want to turn over every single stick on the floor, just because you wonder where your tape went. When you move, kit goes with you. Gun in one hand, circular saw in the other - Start framing.
Things are not done alike in different parts of the world, but when it comes to framing - Nobody beats the yanks for efficiency on the floor. Forget chop saws and table saws. They're done framing before I or you would be done setting up. Look up crazy framer, and have a look at how he knocks up a wall - although he's Canadian. Same MO. That's why the Occies look like they do. For what you are after, I would recommend something like Swedish Snickers work clothing... You can customize that to almost any need. Just don't think for a minute that they are anything like the Occies for durability.
Another thing is the whole culture of where and how you store your tools. Since a lot of framers have their Knaack box in the bed of the truck, the Occies are easy to get in and out of with everything in them - ready to go. With a van setup, pants with pockets and all of that, you are more likely to empty out most of it in your tool box, nail/screw boxes and what not, before you get in and take off. That makes sense if you do a lot of different stuff, but not really if you do the same thing over and over.

Just got mine, I have the 5590 kit which is the electrician kit with the stronghold suspenders, and I’m super excited to get them broken in. Weight doesn’t matter to me, I generally carry about 30-35 pounds of tools and material on my belt at all times anyway, so an extra pound or two from the belt is no big deal to me. In the US, the Occidentals are the Cadillac of tool belts. Everyone knows about them, but nobody will break down and buy them. I finally did, cost me about $500 but you can tell just looking at it that it’s not really overpriced. High quality leather, and handmade. The craftsmanship really shows. I have heard that you need to give the suspenders about two weeks to break in and then pin them down to the belt, but I don’t know anything about that, so I’m looking to see if that’s true or not. Either way, I’m super stoked for these things. Gonna get my tools transferred over tonight when my suspenders get here!

Tools in Australia are very expensive, and from what you've mentioned here, they're just as expensive in New Zealand. At the moment here in Canada (Vancouver Island), you can grab a Dewalt 12 inch double bevel sliding compound saw for $599 + tax, so about $670. A far cry from well over $1000 in Oz.

I’ve used an apron way smaller but now I need deeper pockets. Those look like framers bags. Occidental and others have finishing bags which are smaller. So many to choose from. No one perfect.

Ummm… I think you’ve got them on backwards. Check out essential craftsman’s video on this. The bag you’ve got on your right has a space between the two pouches for a speed square and it should be on your left. That said, your tape should be on your left as well so maybe you’re on to something. ;-)

    • @shaundoherty8862
      @shaundoherty8862 2 роки тому

his tape is on the right and the square is on the left tho bro remember its like looking in a mirror... its flipped

    • @lightspeedguru
      @lightspeedguru 2 роки тому

@@shaundoherty8862 nope. Look again. His tape is on the left (this correct for someone who is right handed) but the slot for the speed square is on his right and it should be on his left. I say ‘the slot’ because he is not using it as it was intended. Furthermore, the inner pockets for pencils and keel, are inside the bag on his left but that bag should be on his right. Again, he isn’t using them for marking tools or it would be immediately obvious to him that this would be wrong.

nylon tool bags wear out, plain and simple. i dont want to be buying new bags all the time. if your concerned with the weight, id suggest you get one of their smaller leather systems, it dosent appear like your using allot of those bags. the 7 bag is the biggest set they make btw

Pissed myself laughing at this. Scottish people are brought up teasing each other and they're very good at it...😂😂 So very true. And yes, also I find the whole tool belt thing strange. Still to meet tradesman who uses one (I'm Scottish)
You should do a video where you only talk in a Scottish accent, and get your Dad to narrate a voice over. That would be hilarious.

I got a bit of shit at first when I got my Occidentals, but I was sick of my Taurus belt as I never liked it revered or on the front. Agree with the size of the Occidentals though they are huge and I think mine are a deeper pocket than yours, I don’t wear braces on mine as I think the adjust to fit bags have a bit more support for the hips? I wear my pants that have multiple pockets hammer loop etc and knee pad inserts when doing finish work inside as I feel too wide with my bags .
    Cheers for the vids

I’ve had the exact same belt for 8 years and in my experience being a carpenter in Canada, the heavier leather belts out last the light nylons and canvas materials. Easily 10X the durability in the elements. 8 year of 5-7 days a week of working outside and it’s still holding up amazingly.

I’ve had my first set for 15 years, the leather which holds bags on belt was slowly sawn to where I needed new bags, ended up buying the left hand set with regret (beings I’m left handed) I’ve had new set. Now for 5 years and have reprogrammed my muscle memory, as for other nail bags I work with guys who wear Diamondback and Nailers, I would prefer the Diamondback over nailers, but also there’s Atlas46, which I own a few accessories of! Yes they are heavy, but the shoulder straps help unless I’m working over head for a long period of time, then the shoulders start to hurt, Thanks for your videos!! Take care

There must be something weird going on here. I’m a carpenter in south east england uk and have been for 20 years. Every single carpenter i have ever worked with wears a tool belt, every single one. Makita belts, dewalt belts, kunys belts, pti belts, toughbuilt belts ! I don’t get this, if you walked on a site as a carpenter Without a tool belt you would be gone and laughed off the site. I saw guys walking round with wooden framing hammers and leather tool belts 15 years ago even on my first day i was told buy an estwing and a tool belt or go home
