Every Sabaton song is about military history, events, and people from around the world. Their most recent song was released about a week or two ago called "Fields of Verdun" really good.. Other good popular songs from them are "Primo Victoria", "Uprising, "To Hell and Back", "The last stand", "PanzerKampf" , "Night Witches", and "The price of a mile". just to name a few and you can pick any of them and not be disappointed...Sabaton is more of a power metal band, so thats why screaming is not part of their music, since power metal is more about powerful vocals and singing. In the other kinds of metal screaming and growling are just part of the art and DNA of the styles. Many of those songs wouldn't be as good or epic if they didnt have growls or screaming, nor would they convey the emotion and feel they try to convey in my opinion. .Great reaction, AGAIN, and hope to see more Sabaton on here.
Not all of their songs are military history based. Their actual debut album, Metalizer (yes it was released 3rd, but it was recorded before Primo Victoria) was not at all military based. There are also songs like Metal Crüe, Metal Ripper, Metal Machine, and Man of War that are tributes to heavy metal and metal bands as well as covers (not original music so they don't really count).
So while their main lyrical focus is now military based, it was not always that way. However 98% of their songs are.

Here is the back story of this song:
Gustavus Adolphus (9/19 December 1594 - 6/16 November 1632, O.S./N.S.), also known in English as Gustav II Adolf or Gustav II Adolph,[1] was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632 who is credited for the founding of Sweden as a great power (Swedish: Stormaktstiden). He led Sweden to military supremacy during the Thirty Years' War, helping to determine the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe. He was formally and posthumously given the name Gustavus Adolphus the Great (Swedish: Gustav Adolf den store, Latin: Gustavus Adolphus Magnus) by the Riksdag of the Estates in 1634.[2][3][4]
He is often regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time, with innovative use of combined arms.[5] His most notable military victory was the Battle of Breitenfeld (1631). With a superb military machine, good weapons, excellent training, and effective field artillery, backed by an efficient government that could provide necessary funds, Gustavus Adolphus was poised to make himself a major European leader.[6] He was killed a year later, however, at the Battle of Lützen (1632). He was assisted in his efforts by Count Axel Oxenstierna, the Lord High Chancellor of Sweden, who also acted as regent after his death.
In an era characterized by almost endless warfare, Gustavus Adolphus inherited three simultaneous and ongoing wars of his father at the age of sixteen. Two of these were border wars with Russia and Denmark, and a more personal war (at least for his father) with Gustavus' first cousin, King Sigismund III Vasa of Poland.[7] Of these three wars that were passed onto his rule, the Danish war was the most acute one.[8]
During his reign, Sweden rose from the status of a Baltic Sea basin regional power to one of the great powers of Europe and a model of early modern era government. Gustavus Adolphus is famously known as the "father of modern warfare",[9] or the first great modern general. Under his tutelage, Sweden and the Protestant cause developed a number of excellent commanders, such as Lennart Torstensson, who would go on to defeat Sweden's enemies and expand the boundaries and the power of the empire long after Gustavus Adolphus's death in battle. Spoils meant he became a successful bookraider in Europe, targeting Jesuit collections.[10]
Called "The Golden King" and "The Lion of the North", he made Sweden one of the great powers of Europe, in part by reforming the administrative structure. For example, he began parish registration of the population, so that the central government could more efficiently tax and conscript the people.[11] Historian Christer Jorgensen argues that his achievement in the field of economic reform, trade, modernization, and the creation of the modern bureaucratic autocracy was as great as his exploits on the battlefields. His domestic reforms, which transformed a backward, almost medieval economy and society, were in fact not only the foundations for his victories in Germany, but also absolutely crucial for the creation and survival of the Swedish Empire.[12]
He is widely commemorated by Protestants in Europe as the main defender of their cause during the Thirty Years' War, with multiple churches, foundations and other undertakings named after him, including the Gustav-Adolf-Werk. He became a symbol of Swedish pride and even had a song composed for him, "Lion From The North."
You beat me to the punch, AND went into more detail than I had planned to. The only thing I have to add is that about an hour from where I live, in St. Peter MN, they have a college named after him: Gustavus Adolphus College.
Interestingly he was also one of the main characters in Eric Flint's 1632 series were he gets helped by West Virginian town from the future.
I can belive all the other stuff on this list, except the last part. You want me to belive this guy had a song written about him? Sounds far fetched.

I mean absolutely no offense in saying this, but if "way back" Sabaton got you into metal, you must be pretty young. I remember getting into metal back in the late 80's. I don't really remember the first metal song I ever heard, but the first metal albums I ever owned was Among the Living by Anthrax and Rust in Peace by Megadeth. That was about 30 years ago... God I'm getting old. I turn 42 today. 😭😭😭

Sabaton is great. The last Stand is amazing. Some of their other albums take a bit to get into but once you do, they are great. The Song Night Witches is incredible. Look that one up and do a vid on it. You'll be humming the words for days after. You guys rock! Up The Irons!

Ok, short about me, since you asked. I'm from Norway, so my Sabaton request is the song "Saboteurs".
Short about "Saboteurs": During ww2, the allies got news that Germany was making heavy water in occupied Norway. Heavy water is a constituent for preparing plutonium. Norwegian soldiers, trained in Scotland, dropped over nazi-occupied Norway, trying to blow up the heavy water plant to prevent the germans from making a nuclear bomb.

I like to think of Sabaton as modern day bards. They tell epic stories with their music based on real history. Some of these stories are so over the top and epic that you would think they're fiction. If you really want to get into to the top tier Sabaton songs i suggest starting with nightwitches. It's about the Russian 588th night bomber division. The interesting thing about that division was that not only did these bombers use antiquated planes from WW1 during WW2 but they were also all female. They actually became so feared by the Germans that any pilot that managed to shoot one of them down was awarded the iron cross for bravery

Great reaction to a GREAT - an under-recommended (there's an "under" word again!) song by SABATON... refreshing! Thank you guys! I did not look at all the comments so maybe I am repeating someone else's trivia point, but the "Carolus Rex" album, based obviously on Swedish history, has also a native language version, and some songs, especially deep and sad ones (there is that side to war...) come off on yet another level. The Swedish version of "A Lifetime of War" ["En Lifstid i Krig", did I spell it right?] comes to mind.
Btw, my take is that by now SABATON is (deservedly) getting more spotlight, and moving to the status of a band that is rated just right! :) Of course, you can find Power metal around that is as brilliant (and more complex) - but nobody does the take on history with the edge, panache, seriousness, respect, and overall FEEL for the chosen topic like SABATON do. Yes, they are unique.
I love Sabaton. I've seen them live three times and own their albums, but I just can't get into this album much. THey have so many great songs on their other albums!

I bet someone has said parts of this already, but I don't have the time to read all the comments. The record that features this song is a concept record that deals with the military and political history of Sweden from around 1500 until the late 1700s. The time that is mostly focused on is what in Swedish is known as Stormaktstiden - The Great Power period. The span of time in question covers early 1600s (1611 to be exact) until the late 1700s (1772 is one proffered end). During this period Sweden was one of the most powerful nations in all of Europe, holding sway over the entire Baltic sea region, Norway, contemporary Sweden, Finland, the Baltic nations of modern day Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, the seaside regions of Poland and a duchy in the north of modern-day Germany (known as Swedish Pommern at the time). When we finally got our asses kicked by Peter the Great of Russia at the river Poltava it was in no small part because he had learned from our military organization, tactics, equipment etc. (which was revolutionary for the time and Pioneered by the man this song is about). He had a tendency to look at the west, adapt it to Russian conditions and put it to practice with remarkable and in the case of military matters, devastating results.
At the height of our power, we beat up the Poles, The Russians, The Danish, the Holy League consisting of Catholic nations and military powers (the 30-year war). Everyone. In later years it has unfortunately become controversial (as you might imagine) since it's been hijacked by far-right people and organisations, but regardless of the atrocities the Caroleans (a name for the Elite Swedish Army of the time) committed during their campaigns, it's still a point of national pride in Sweden for many. Some of their actions were horrible and downright dishonorable. I won't go into specifics, but I know a few particular stories that would both horrify and appall any sane person today. Comparatively speaking we were, to my knowledge, no worse than other war-waging nations of the period, however, so I don't understand the teleological (viewing history with contemporary morals) stance a lot of people take on the subject. It's just how things were at that point in time.
On the whole, we mattered and had a larger role in shaping the future of Europe than we do today (for better and for worse) in a much more significant way than we do now. As a little side-anecdote, the man that was to become King of Sweden, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, the direct ancestor to our Royal Family even today, was one of the commanders responsible for taking down Napoleon (one of the times, the man sure was resilient and didn't give up).

If you listen to the carolus rex album you should do the swedish version with english subtitles, highly recommend it.

He does have a powerful voice and it fits this kind of music. I’ve never heard of this band but I do want to hear more of their songs. How about #AprilWine “I like to rock”. Another underrated classic rock band. #Cinderella “The more things change”. Keep doing what you do, this is fun to watch.

Another amazing band you should check out is Kamelot. There are a ton of great songs I could suggest, but I'd have to go with either Hunter's Season, as it's about the guitar player's mother who passed away when they were writing the album, or The Human Stain, which is essentially about how the planet is dying and we're not doing much to stop it. They've covered a huge number of real world topics over the years as well as a pair of concept albums about the classic Faust (Epica/The Black Halo, which are two of my favorite albums of all time). I've been listening to them since 2005 and they've remained one of my favorite bands ever since.

You should defenitly check them out, this band along with Sabaton are one of my favorite bands. They are special to me for one because they are Nordic like me and they sing about Vikings which I have much heritage of.

All protestants have Gustav Adolf to thank that they even exist! Without him the catholics would have won the 30 years war and there would just be catholics. Every theme of every sabaton song should be searched in wikipedia! They are just so damn great!

Speaking of military history behind the song, this I would assume should(I never looked up if it actually is), be about Gustav II.
