True Story: Hank, I used your Crash Course videos to self study for a bunch of AP exams in high school, and in this way I was the first person in my family to afford to attend college. I went to college in Boston (cold city) and went on a date with a girl from Orlando (hot city). It was immediately apparent that she had not packed for cold weather, so my first present to her was a subscription to the Awesome Socks Club so that she would at least have some reasonable socks to wear. Flash forward a bit. I'm in the hospital and one of the things that has become incredibly difficult for me is putting my shoes on. My girlfriend brought me those same Awesome Socks so that the fun patterns would make putting on shoes just a little more enjoyable. Flash forward to today. I've been with her for five years. I run my own non-profit that brings equitable education abroad, and there is at least one pair of Awesome Socks in my suitcase every time I fly. And literally today, I just had my first meeting with an angel investor to hopefully scale operations and reach more kids. Thank you and thanks for socks.

For decades, all my father in law asked for for gifts was plain black socks. Then the Awesome Socks Club was born, and I said “nah man, we can do better than that.” So we gifted him a subscription way back at the beginning and now ALL of his socks are awesome. Hank I discovered you when I was in 6th grade, and to me you were "John's brother" guy. Now I am starting a new career as an EMT, and life is crazy. You've become "one of those guys who helped me get through the early stages of life so I can get to this moment" guy.
It is very comforting to see somebody, who has done so much with their life and has reached a point where they've left a very noticeable mark on society, struggle with the same issues of "trying to fit into an identity" as I (and many others) do. You are not your identity. You are not your achievements, nor your skills. The only thing you are is you. And no matter where you are in life, that is all you need to be. Find comfort in yourself and not in what you think you should or want to be.

watched back in the day, started halfway through year one. was hooked immediately. didn't have many friends as a young man and y'all made me feel part of something. It's you and John who taught me that diversifying your identity is the best way to be a happy and fulfilled person, but I definitely understand feeling like you're being pulled in too many directions. Because of you and your videos, i was inspired, now after my own cancer situation, to re-educate myself on hpwto get excited about things, even let myself get a bit overwhelmed about all the different things out there I could and want to be. For some of us, broken by the pandemic, broke and totally alone in the world, with zero "get well cards" when we have cancer, and nothing but toxic abusive families gloating over our demise, the "what s the point" post treatment phase can be quite extensive, so it was interesting to hear in another of your videos in which you admitted that ...that is a thing!🎉 cheers!

The first half of this has actually been really helpful for me in picking a college major/career. I've been so worried about creating a narrative for myself, an identity, a brand. Hank has both 1: showed me that I can do a lot of things in different fields and still be fairly competent and influential in all of them, and 2: helped me by reframing the emphasis on picking a career as something that exists in the context of self-mythology and the personal brand, an emphasis created by the world at large, more so out of desire for profit and notoriety than out of any social good.
Honestly I’ve never thought of you as “science guy”. I’ve always thought of you as makes-many-positive-ripples-in-the-world-guy. Cause you really seem to be making ‘em. You help people learn. You help them heal. You advocate for them. You make them smile. That’s important. Keep being you!!!

Awesome socks help me get through gloomy Canadian winters. They also brighten other people's days. My proctologist, during a preliminary exam actually asked me where she could get fun socks for her dad. It was one of the greatest fashion compliments I've ever gotten.

It's you and John who taught me that diversifying your identity is the best way to be a happy and fulfilled person, but I definitely understand feeling like you're being pulled in too many directions. Just know that whatever kinds of guys you choose to be, there will always be a community who appreciates and wants to support that guy!
Just be yourself! We appreciate your multifacetedness! I don't think you need to worry about being stuck in a pigeonhole by being sock guy or science guy. Part of your "brand" is doing and talking about all the cool things. I think we appreciate it bc you speak about all these things with so much sincere enthusiasm and bc it reminds us of ourselves -- we are all super multifaceted; just most people aren't able to show off so many areas that they are interested in publicly or with their careers as effectively as you. You reflect something nuanced and valuable in all of us. I hope someday I can have a career that ties a bunch of my different interests together too!

You're the Hank Green guy, and you are and have been unexplainably valuable to me and so many other people, I love your science videos - your video about the first images out of the JWST made me actually understand what I was seeing and brought me to tears about the majesty of the universe and the unbelievable ability we have to see and understand it. But everything else you do, from reimaging how a business can work to making amazing comedy about cancer is uplifting and beautiful. Whatever you do, we're all grateful that you do it.
*Also you were the best part about Mentopolis and that's saying a lot, because that was a tour de force of hilarious DND people

Because of you and your videos, i was inspired, now after my own cancer situation, to re-educate myself on hpwto get excited about things, even let myself get a bit overwhelmed about all the different things out there I could and want to be. For some of us, broken by the pandemic, broke and totally alone in the world, with zero "get well cards" when we have cancer, and nothing but toxic abusive families gloating over our demise, the "what s the point" post treatment phase can be quite extensive, so it was interesting to hear in another of your videos in which you admitted that ...that is a thing!🎉 cheers!

Always starting a new thing is why I enjoy you so much and relate to your content for I am also this way. Every new thing you do validates my own multidimensional set of interests. To me you will always be THE UA-cam guy. And since UA-cam is a very multifaceted thing so are you. You encompasses the science that has helped get an entire generation through highschool and even college. The social issues that plague the world, and you are also just the fun stuff
My one complaint about the Awesome Socks Club is that they have sent me too many high quality socks, and despite daily use, and gifting a couple I'm running out of room in my sock drawer.

The first half of this has actually been really helpful for me in picking a college major/career. I've been so worried about creating a narrative for myself, an identity, a brand.
Hank has both 1: showed me that I can do a lot of things in different fields and still be fairly competent and influential in all of them, and 2: helped me by reframing the emphasis on picking a career as something that exists in the context of self-mythology and the personal brand, an emphasis created by the world at large, more so out of desire for profit and notoriety than out of any social good.
Hank, you are a brand in and of itself. It’s one of the reasons why so many of us like you. You are human, and more than one thing. Just like we are.
Honestly I’ve never thought of you as “science guy”. I’ve always thought of you as makes-many-positive-ripples-in-the-world-guy. Cause you really seem to be making ‘em. You help people learn. You help them heal. You advocate for them. You make them smile. That’s important. Keep being you!!!

Awesome socks help me get through gloomy Canadian winters. They also brighten other people's days. My proctologist, during a preliminary exam actually asked me where she could get fun socks for her dad. It was one of the greatest fashion compliments I've ever gotten.
