In the 70s & early 80s, I grew up in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama.
Ron & Robert Fuller owned the territory around Dothan Alabama...it was called Southeastern Championship Wrestling.
The matches were held at the Houston Co Farm Center in Dothan on Friday nights.
I remember when Ox Baker came to Dothan...I was around 10 yrs old, & Ox Baker scared me to death. Me & my dad got to the Houston Co Farm Center early so I could see all the wrestlers come thru the doors.
Ox Baker walked by me & I ran to my dad's side.
Later on me & my dad saw Ox before his match.
I had a small notebook & pen in my hand...Ox saw me & said "I guess you want an autograph." I nodded my head & Ox said "well come on over here...I'm not coming to you."
When I walked over...HE ACTUALLY DROPPED TO ONE KNEE & ASKED ME MY NAME... TALKED TO ME & PUT HIS ARM AROUND ME...FEAR WAS GONE!!!
After Ox signed my notebook, Ox said "glad to meet you Randy...now I need you to cheer loud for me tonight because I'm gonna need it...I'm fighting Ron Fuller tonight."
That Friday night I became the biggest Ox Baker fan ever...I cheered so loud & was jumping around. I remember my dad had to keep telling me to sit down because he was afraid I was going to fall.
Ox Baker still today is my favorite wrestler...I WAS SO SAD TO HEAR HE DIED A FEW YRS AGO.
R.I.P. Ox, & thanks for taking time to talk to me when I was 10 yrs old...OX & HIS FAMILY WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH THAT FRIDAY NIGHT MEANT TO ME... I'm 50 YRS OLD NOW & I STILL HAVE THAT NOTEBOOK PUT UP SAFE!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Randy Miller well I'm 58 years old and I used to go thru Dothan Alabama back in the early 80.s goning to fort Walton beach fla.and Panama city beach fla.from tennessee I worked in construction back then any way there was a cock fighting pit around Dothan back then I think it was called the sports man club your dad or kin might remember it any way find the movie escape from new York staring Kurt Russell because of baker.in in it as a conviect he fights Kurt Russell it's a good seen good story you got there
Randy Miller, I'm from Mobile, Ala as well. Now live in Hayden, Ala. Used to watch wrestling matches at Expo Hall in Mobile and at Boutwell Auditorium in B'ham.
I lived in Cullman Ala Smith Lake
That is how you make and keep fans, it's the name of the game. Great story.
brother that is one of the coolest pro wresting fan stories i've ever heard...
Love Ox Baker- such exciting heel he was.😊
Big Dusty against Ox Baker now that's a classic. Rest In Peace Douglas A Baker and Virgil Runnels two of the best to ever wrestle
I never saw Ox work, but clearly he knew his craft. Ring psychology.
Great interview, thanks for posting. I remember as a kid watching Ox wrestle in Bruiser's WWA... being from Chicago we got to watch both the WWA and Verne's AWA. Great stuff!
his eyebrows are legendary
The Fabulous Ox Baker!! One of my favorites. A real legend.
This guy knows what he’s talking about...good guy one of the greatest
I can remember seeing ox baker at a steelworker picnic in Indiana . He was wrestling in the main event. He was walking around signing up for a raffle. My friend Jeff and I followed him around for an hour trying to get up nerve to ask for his autograph. We were 12 years old. He yelled at us but then gave us his autograph. What a great talent he was.
Born: April 19, 1934, Sedalia, MO
Died: October 20, 2014, Hartford, CT
Height: 6′ 5″
Billed weight: 340 lbs
RIP Big Man, thanks for the memories!
i seen those matches at the Miami Beach Convention Center, be the crap out of Dusty Rhodes.
Fck him
@@haitiansouljadex3186 I wonder if people will say the same about you when you die....
RIP to a true wrestling legend.
This guy was one of the biggest drawing heels of all time
in about 1977 I was walking to the pak-a-sac in PENSACOLA FLORIDA as just a goofy 9 year old kid who loved wrestling every sat morning...watched EVERY sat....Well this day I was walking to the store and I was looking down at the sidewalk.....As I walked along I started to glance up when I saw a car kind of approaching...Ias I looked up I saw in the drivers seat was Ox...as he got right in front of me, I said HEY YOU"RE....and he said "OX BAKER PROFESSIONAL WRASSLER", and floored the giant lincoln he was driving into the road and zoomed off down the street. i can take you to the exact spot still today! He was headed to i-10 to get on the interstate towards MOBILE I think.
Doug Was A
Wrestling Genius.
Sure Miss You Big Ox
My first wrestling match was an ICW event in Cape Girardeau, MO that featured Randy Savage vs. Ox Baker in the headliner. The Convertible Blondes, Willie Monroe, Lanny Poffo, and so many more were on the card that evening. Great memories!
&y_y_y
Saw "The Man" wrestle in the AWA during the 1960's & ,70''s.
He was definitely "1 bad dude" inside the ring, but outside the ring, he knew how to"work the fans".
RIP DOUG "OX" BAKER
as a kid I had my uncle take me to the matches in the st pete/tampa area. saw ox baker/dusty rhodes had some great matches!
Fort Homer Hesterly Armory! Great memories!
Wow ! This guy's personality is great. Unfortunately, I have never seen any of his matches. Ox is definitely a pro wrestling legend, for sure.
Watch on UA-cam
He was the original road warrior
I totally agree. The referee has to be the authority in the ring
He appeared on The Price is Right in 1981. "Douglas Baker, come on down!" He was pretty funny, very cool. Made it to the big wheel, but only got .40 cents on his spin.
True Monster Heel What a Character ,Big OX RIP
Uh...Ox Baker is more intelligent than most pro wrestlers !
What a legend!
That was great from one of the wrestling" legends of the sport..R,I.P. Mr. Baker..I remember you from the late 70' to 90'.
Has good outlook ,,Did see him Alot on tv but even in ,,Escape from New York movie ,,1981
Oh, the Kurt Russell / busty Adrienne Barbeau action film.
True wrestlers are proud of their creativity!!
A great heel! Had a great look and was the scourge of every territory. Butts in the seats, that was how you became a great wrestler. A great heel generated heat so the baby face could look great when they were victorious or gain sympathy with a beating or a loss, usually because the heel cheated. Fond memories of seeing Ox Baker wrestle. RIP Big Man.
Killer Ox Baker that was my friend I met him in Connecticut he was so friendly escape from NY wow wrestling.God bless him I miss him good family man class A too me.
Im best friends with his daighter, ox was a douche dad.
Ox was a little rambunctious but very intelligent about the business
Thanks for those 12 weeks you spent in Florida I remember it well I was living in Tampa
Ox was a huge draw in Florida. I can remember sellouts or crowds of 6,000 plus. Ox was great with promos.
I love that Ox Baker acts like a total psycho while being entirely reasonable.
Bring back memories at The Amory in Tampa.
Ox was amazing. Wrestlers today need to learn from ox!
Ox Baker the only man alive that needed to make a hair appointment to get his eyebrows cut.
I fondly remember Ox & Dusty's exchange before ROH's At Our Best event. Ox screamed at Dusty telling people he was sick and tired of Dusty telling people he ran him out of Florida. Dusty was in the Main Event,Baker interfered and the Commentators speculated that someone slipped them drugs cuz they couldn't believe what they were seeing
Ox and dusty didn't get along well
i still love the Ox Baker 1974 riot video in Cleveland..that looked crazy
Manhood personified.
Got to meet Ox when he did the Indianapolis circuit in the late 70's.. great guy outside the ring.. wouldnt want anything to do with em inside, however!
One of my favorites.
Dusty Rhodes was not fat... he was strong, robust, and full of life
A little overweight
Ox was a giant of a man crazy as hell............
Not everyone can rock those eyebrows and stasche.
He worked in Puerto Rico...I saw him loose the univ. Title to Carlos Colon. He was the real road dog to all his fellow wrestlers!!! RIP BIG OX
Ric Flair tells a great story in Puerto Rico nobody wanted to wrestle the last match because the fans would storm the ring, he said they would always tell Ox because he was the main event he had to wrestle last, he fell for it every time.
I take this over Vince's BS. Any day.
1 thing for sure...when ox was on the card you definitely got your$$$ worth
Ox Baker, still scary as hell.
BIG OX! RIP💐 The first grappler that was feared
For his 👊💓👊 via Escape from New York
He was cast in after his
Retirement....Which was
A BIG HIT at the time. with
🎥actor harthrob Curt
Russell🎥.
Rest In Peace Ox What a great man
Heart Punch!!!
Love Ox Baker. Still my favorite contestant on the Price of Right. UA-cam it.
Wow! 6' 5" tall and 340 pounds! Had no idea he was the guy in the ring opposite Kurt Russel in Escape From New York!
He really rocked in that movie. I think everyone recognized him right away. But then again, how could you miss THAT face?
@@nicoleknight9412 I never knew who he was, and for 40 years, never even thought about it! LOL
@@timmycrw91 Except for the ones who had never seen him before. I forgot about them. Sorry!
Big Ox. you're the greatest. RIP Brother from David Gold. Never got to wrestle you but I wish I had.
Ox played the part well. I remember, when he was in Florida, and the great Gordon Solie, was interviewing him. Ox said "Gordon Solie, I didn't come to Florida, to pet Babies, or make a reputation for myself. I came to Florida, because I like to HURT people!" OX, then walks away, And Gordon Solie, says............"Certainly some harsh words, from Mr Baker" LMAO
He looks like a fighting game character.
Ox Baker was the meanest looking wrestler of all time. He is on my short list of the four wrestlers I'd most like to see in the ring again. Fortunately, I got to see him in person a number of times at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. He did some tag teams with the Enforcer.
as OX used to say “I love to hurt people”!!
I love that quote !!!!
good show.
He kinda looks like an older Peter Steele here.
Did Ox say electric fence match? No way! LMAO
OX BAKER .When they had real wrestlers.
Great wrestler
Loved it! Did Ox ever go through Georgia in the WCW promotion?
He wrestled in Georgia in the 1970s and in late 1984 and managed the Nightstalker in W.C.W. in the early 1990's.
Two wrestlers died after matches with Ox at the good ole Atlanta Municipal Autotorium Ray Gunkle and Alberto Torres.
He feuded with Ernie Ladd among others in Georgia. Everybody talks about his heart punch, but he also had an elbow smash that was pretty devastating as well.
Best Looking Man in all of Wrestling!
He was a very memorable individual though rugged nononsense they don't come that way any more
Big brute but very knowledgeable about the wresting trade and was in my era in flroida i grew up in tampa eddie and mike graham the brisco brothers era
I always liked this guy as I was totally hating him. The best at being bad. Ox was the man.
I saw Ox Baker wrestle in Tampa in the 70's
He used to dated a woman named Nancy.
She used to sit next to me. When he was in the ring, he would look
over at her and wink. He didn't stay long
What a class act 👌🏼
Love Ox that wrestling
I love Ox Baker ...that big Galoot could heat up an ice rink
True professional
Wow I didn't know they feud Ed
DA OX MAN IS STILL DA MAN. GREAT JOB BIG MAN!!!!
Heat punch loved ox Baker
hart punch dude, hart punch !!!!!
The next contestant on the price is right!
He was a riot when he was on there. Great sense of humor.
Bob Barker:. If you lose, you're not gonna hurt me, right?
Great talent, great gentleman. RIP Douglas.
One of the greatest heels ever
He is right
CHECK OUT ON YOU TUBE WHEN OX WAS A CONTESTANT ON THE PRICE IS RIGHT WITH BOB BARKER. OX DWARFS BOB BARKER WHO WAS TALL TO THATS HOW BIG OX WAS.
He was a great wrestler
I saw Ox Baker spit in the face of a little kid who was asking for an autograph. It was at the Ocala jai-alai fronton. About half way between Gainesville and Ocala, Florida. Some time about 1986
@@peterb2325 dont care
⭐OX⭐
I just remember seeing him around Danielson CT trying to hawk his old memorabilia in the 00's
OX!
Never touched a ref? The Cleveland riot?
still living the gimmick
Yrs ago I didn't think he was human by the look of him
Ole dusty , the original
Bigger.
Dusty Rhodes won most of his matches against Ox Baker in Florida ('76/'77/'79). The only matches he did not win were double DQs.
ok said in 40 yrs he never touched a ref in 40 yrs I just watched a match between him and Ernie the cat Ladd where ox knocked a ref out of the ring it was by accident of course it was a work yes the ref took a light bump but still lol great match
He’s got a couple of mustaches on his face.
He talks like Jesse Ventura. Spitting image.
Why did Ox "job" to Angelo Mosca Jr in a minute in 1983?
You read write...not Big Angelo...skinny Angelo Junior. In Florida.
Guess I'm asking questions to the dead who can't answer me dead.
Those eye brows.
Randy savage vs ox baker
Florida Belongs To Ox Baker. I didn't come to Florida to sign autographs. I didn't come to the state of Florida to kiss babies.
No Sell Dirty Rhodes always gets himself over
i really hope those EYEBROWS ARE FAKE. and looks like he could be jessie Ventura's FATHER..LOL
Nope . They are as legit as his bald head .
I saw him at 10 and I would lose sleep over his meaner
Those Eyebrows gotta Go HA HA HA
