  • There are a lot of similarities between clarinet and saxophone, but there are also some significant differences that need to be taken care of in order to make the transition properly.

    I swapped from clarinet to sax years ago, and while I’ve since done my own research and gotten correct sax technique since then, I feel like having seen this video back then would have made the first year or two after my transition a lot easier. I remember a couple months after I officially switched we got this piece and I had a brain failure or something and played a fifth interval too high because I was reading it in Bb instead of Eb

    Awesome thank you! Long time clarinettist trying out sax. Trying not to reinforce clarinet habits from the start 😂

    As a clarinetist that started playing sax as well, I could immediately tell you started on sax and switched the other way

    This has been exactly what I needed for my first attempts playing tenor. Thank you very much

    I’m planning to switch from clarinet to saxophone next year in 7th grade. I am a decent clarinet player but I wanna try out a new instrument.

    Clarinet to Tenor

      It's the same principle as to alto, except a little slower, warmer airstream for tenor.

    Hi Berin. Please could you make a video on transitioning from Sax to clarinet. I've been playing Sax for 5 years now and I want to try out the clarinet

    Whats the best way to practice get used to the key that alto typically play in (G, A, or just sharps in general). I played clarinet ever since middle school and havent played tenor sax since 2015 for reference

    Great lesson but this doesn't mean I have to blow less on the saxophone, right??

    Got a quick question to ask... I have been playing clarinet for 7years and now study music at uni with my clarinet. I am interested in learning the alto sax as an extra instrument to learn but I am worried it may give me bad habits. Have you heard of any common habits pupils have on the Clara when learning the sax ?

      I don't know if it answers your question but there are so many people who play both and they do it great. They don't get used to bad habits and I think if you still practice a lot clarinet you will make it without getting habits from the sax.

    I don't think the information about the clarinet is the most precise. In the clarinet school we do have both embochurs and I quite prefer the round one. As the vowel and the air goes we allways hear to pronunce the "o" or "a" shape and to have a warm quality to the air flow, otherwise the tone quality gets thin, weak, rustling

    Bass clarinet to Baritone Sax?

    • @berinstephens
      @berinstephens  4 роки тому +1

      Hmm, I'll have to do some thinking on that. I know when I first took up bass clarinet, I had a hard time playing bari first and then switching to bass cl without squawking. But I played bari before I played bass cl. Bari will be more open in the oral cavity. When you play on just the mouthpiece, you should get a D concert out of it. See if that helps.

    Someone help me!!! I really want to play clarinet because I have been for about 3 years , but then I want to play saxophone which even my family agrees I should so now I don't know what to do. I want to do both but then I would have to join jazz band in school which I don't want because I have anxiety and can't do solos . I'm stuck someone please helpppp😢😢

      Azul Delgado The jazz band director won’t make you do solos if you aren’t extremely talented at the saxophone, and Im guessing that since you are just starting playing the sax you wont have to worry about that. Also, don’t do what your family tells you to do in this case. You have to decide what YOU want to do.

    • @berinstephens

      The main thing I tell my students is to do the things that they enjoy and that make them happy. And as Spets said, the director won't make you do a solo if you don't want to. When I was in junior high, I remember watching the high school jazz band play and the alto sax player standing up to play a solo. The thought of that scared me to death and I vowed that I would never do that. But as I gained confidence in my playing and learned how to solo, things changed so that now I'm like, "Give me a solo every song!" It takes time, though, and if you decide you want to do solos later, you'll be able to do it fine. But, again, the most important thing is to just have fun and enjoy music.

    Bass clarinet to alto sax

    • @berinstephens
      @berinstephens  4 роки тому

      Hmm, I don't play enough bass clarinet to know for sure. For the most part, I approach bass clarinet more like it is a sax anyway. The air speed is similar to tenor sax. Inside the oral cavity is a little different, but closer to sax than to soprano clarinet. I hope that helps.

    JUST EXPLAIN THE KEYBOARD similarities with clarinet! The rest should be easy. Soprano, Alto and Tenor are all different!
