Which says a lot.
I was woefully ignorant of the religion before researching this video, but I have to say, I think the tenants and morals of the religion probably fall more in line with my own personal beliefs than any other I've come across, it's a beautiful religion with a lot of important structures for living a healthy and happy life. New fan/subscriber of the channel, love this video! I remember when the box set came out on DVD, the 2 hour extras about the science and philosophy of the MATRIX films barely left my DVD player, and I think some of the Wilbur audio is excerpted from those. This video has compelled me to revisit some of the personal writings I wrote when the sequels came out. I remember writing this in depth inquiry into the debts the Wachowskis owed to GODEL ESCHER BACH and its exploration of Godel's Incompleteness Theorem through Neo and Smith, etc etc. Good times. Thanks for your videos!
Thanks! Yeah, it was all pulled from "Return to Source", I think it was on one of the bonus discs. You should! Philosophy is always fun to write about. Thanks for your comment!
Neo wasn't choosing between Trinity and saving mankind. Knowing that entering the door that all the Ones before him had entered only would repeat the cycle of torment and imprisonment, the only real possibility to actually save and free mankind was to enter the other door. Hence making it both the morally and subjectively right choice for Neo.
As Quentin Tarantino said before, at the end of the first movie the neos journey as ‘the one’ is consolidated with the power of a god. After that there are no stakes, and so there is no reason to believe he could ever fail. The first matrix is my favourite film, but I argue there should have been no sequels... although that car chase in reloaded was badass

Very good video. I have a page of Matrix related material, mainly dedicated to my fan edits of Reloaded and Revolutions. (Reloaded Remixed and Revolutions Remixed) I have wanted to make some videos examining the philosophy of the films myself. In the most abrupt way I can summarize it the first film, as you pointed out, is about the question of Ontology. The Second film I would contend deals with Teleology, or the examination of purpose. And the third film examines the Existential Dilemma.
Thank you! Awesome! Always great to find a fellow fan. I grew up on these movies, obsessively watched them, played all the video games, I'm just a Matrix junkie xD What do you think about the reboots coming out by the way? I'd agree. Reloaded is all about purpose within the context of free will I think, and oh yeah, Revolutions gets HEAVY into existentialism.
I think a lot of people who grew up working with computers or playing video games are more inclined to a sort of idealist metaphysics than people of say, the 19th and 20th century were. The concept of "software" and the fact that you can run the same program on different machines indicates that a program has an eternal, immaterial existence of some sort. If you wrote a program out in full on a sheet of paper and then typed it into a computer a hundred years from now, you could run the same program. This shows that "Idea", information, or mind actually does transcend the material used to manifest its presence, and must be said to exist in some sense. In an information-machine culture the phenomena which Pythagoras and Plato tried to describe is far more obvious than it was to scientists of the last couple centuries.
In the first Matrix movie, Neo (Thomas Anderson at that point) grabs a floppy disc from a hollowed out copy of “Simulacra and Simulation” by Jean Baudrillard. The entire first movie is basically a play on that book’s themes.
I really enjoyed this video essay about the philosophy on the Matrix! I do however have a question for you; what do you think defines the difference between the machines (including the agents) and the humans in the movie/s? Thanks!
Thank you! It's tough to say, I think you could interpret it in a lot of different ways, but to me the machines represent the force of opposition that naturally exists within all of us, some sort of metaphysical idea of the forces that push against us that we ourselves created. *Hindu's Sanskrit Shlokas used in The Matrix Revolution movie* ‘ *Navras*’ is a song from The Matrix Revolutions soundtrack by goa trance band Juno Reactor, composed by Don Davis and featuring vocal elements by Lakshmi Shankar and Azam Ali. The song contains an adaption of the Asato ma mantra found in the *Hindu* sacred text the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, section I.iii.28, used in the soundtrack of the movie trilogy The Matrix. I just have 1 question , half way through this, when you said “this has been done 5 times before” (by “the chosen one”/ Zion) - I miss where they say or deduct “5 times before”. Can you clarify and thank you!!
Nice analysis (and yes you really sound like Nerdwriter, and I don't care, this is a very soothing voice and tone, keep it up ;) ) One tiny little thing got in the way of full enjoyment: be careful with the sound volume. It got really low when you showed moments of the film, and reaaaaally high when the writer was explaining stuff at the end. I have no idea how this works, but I'm pretty sure you can tweak that out ;) Anyway: Keep it coming, you gave me a craving for more! :D
It's something I've been trying to improve, but sometimes the native audio is hard to increase without getting a lot of distortion, but I've been trying to find ways to fix that in later videos, I agree, it's a little distracting when the audio levels are inconsistent. Thanks so much!
Great video! You have yourself a new sub. On a personal note, I find it interesting how even though I'm not fond of religion to say the least, The Matrix movies appeal so much to me, even though they are filled with religious content. Makes me wonder. Is it the concept of religion itself that makes it so appealing?
Thanks for subscribing! I have to imagine so. For me, I don't follow any religion, but I find the stories fascinating. I think spirituality all around an interesting subject, and when it's explored in a movie(as long as it's not too preachy) I generally enjoy it.

the concept/scenarios of the one and their encounters with the architect are similar to what happens in the movie snowpiercer. ive just noticed the similarities and i wonder if the creators for snowpiercer took inspiration from the matrix
Excellent job with this analysis. Something to add, when you referenced the current matrix being only one of many versions. I noticed that you used the allegory of the cave from Plato. Do you think the "perfect" matrix is a reference to the Golden Age of man in Greek mythology? I mentioned this in my latest video about the matrix. I would love to see more Greek myths mentioned
I think it's entirely possible, I definitely didn't approach it from that angle when writing the video, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's what the Wachowski's intended. I'm not too well read on Greek mythology, but I'm sure there's a fair amount of it present in the trilogy.
A great (alternate) interpretation of the Matrix Philosophy. Although at present we live in worlds within worlds (due to the emergence of the internet), there is the blindness in humanity, in its inability to see the existence of the soul in the eternal world of the soul that exists beyond this (material) physical dimension. 'The matrix does have us all', as we spend infinite lifetimes making countless mistakes in our choices, in our search to reach nirvana and to be one with the light (in being enlightened) and find peace for eternity. N.S.
The idea that Neo chooses Trinity over humanity, sounds pretty betta to me. If somone could have pushed love aside, for the greater good of humanity ,would be a more compelling story. Anybody can choose a women over the rest of humanity but a chosen one would choose greater good over love. Just my opinion.
I'm truly impressed by this. I've encountered similar material before, and it was nothing short of amazing. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
@@daniel_netzel I gather I should see part 3 'movie' huh? Bet the farm I've already been living it. That is if the writers didn't stray too far from the original. Thanks
Also if up for a 2nd question - why is the ship “Mark III” . Nebechanezzar was Babylon king in real life and there were a king I and King II before Babylon downfall. That I keep trying to figure out.
The question lies in whether can you feel the difference?we cant achieve higher existance without accending to it, only than you know what you should know. How can you change the existential threat for good without break through the repeating loop of salvation? People experience fear they afraid of losing they hope things will continued some how but what they didnt see is it also take up space. To improve and grow one need space, and the ultimate sacrifice is to lose something.
The beauty of the matrix is how it is constructed of binaries. However, unlike most popular narratives the binary is not simply hope and despair, but hope and indifference.
It's amazing how much people take from these movies when they stop whining about CG effects and Keanu who, let's face it, deserves credit for supporting these kinds of off-beat films.
I think if you watch all 3 Matrix movies in a row then I think it's more enjoyable and easier to understand. I think the sequels play with the audience a little. It's easy to lose interest or believe that Neo is going to somehow save everyone. With so many other characters doubting. That's like the fans of the first Matrix being disappointed that the 2nd and 3rd movies were going to be the same as the first. But Neo does save everyone just not the way we were expecting. That's pretty close to a Christ like figure.
I see a lot of things when I search about Perennial Philosophy saying that it and the "Traditionalist School" are linked to Fascism, Aryanism, Neofolk, and Pagan Esoteric Ultranationalism, and Third Positionist politics. Why is this? Was Julius Evolutionary just a bad egg that has tarred the name of Perinnialism. Or is this reflective of an underlying philosophy of Traditionalism? What is the difference between Perinnialism and Fascism? And are there Perinnialists who denounce fascism, racism, and ultra-nationalism?
Linked? You can link any philosophy to inferior ideologies warping its universal principles into extremist views. These ideas miss the point of love, compassion and oneness of sentient beings and nature into one consciousness. Many wars and crimes have been made in the name of Christ, Buddha, and many others. Intellectual understanding is different than actually walking the path, undergoing the transformation that the perennial philosophy requires. For a glorious work on the matter check out "The Perennial Philosophy" by Aldous Huxley, where he only considers enlightened people, not just intellectuals that go on and on slicing and dicing without having experienced it themselves.
I think we can all agree, the matrix is the best sci fi movie ever made. Like, look at it this way, the film was shot in 1998 1999, at the time, there was no facebook, or social media at all really. I remember they had a website, whatisthematrix.com or something. Which popped up after the trailer. Every1 wanted to know what the matrix was, b4 they saw the movie. And even those who watched it, could not truly explain it. I watched this movie over, and over so many times. Soo good.
good analysis, although seems a little simplistic interpretation. also i was expecting analysis on Simulacra & Simulation- the main inspiration behind the Matrix
Oh it is, you could easily fill 10 hours of material covering the philosophy of these films, squeezing it all into a short video isn't going to do it properly, but hopefully it served as a good primer for a lot of the fundamental ideas they explore.
What’s the astonishing to me is that it almost seems like there was a disconnect between the Wachowski’s that made these movies, and the Wachowski’s that made the Matrix Resurrections. Not to say that these movies were _terribly_ profound, the gap in skill when it comes to storytelling is almost as if they’re completely different people. It’s like anybody could’ve done a more faithful unnecessary sequal than them, ironically. makes me wonder how much actual input they had on all the good aspects of the series, or if they were literally just the "let's show the studio Ghost in the Shell and have to he writes lrs do the heavy lifting" guys.
Maybe because in paradise free will is useless, whatever you choose to do the outcome is always satisfying, good, pleasing. When there is pain and suffering free will matters, because the path you take will (most of the time) have both positive and negative consequences.
This is the one that pushed me over the edge to being a Patron. Honestly I would have anyway because I was waiting for a pattern of content I resonated with, but you hit it out of the park with this one. This so accurately explains something that makes these films so special to me.

I find all 3 films to be terrific. I can easily look over the CG. Even with its flaws, they’re fascinating and very enjoyable films.
I totally agree. The CG is weird, it looks amazing at times, and then other times it looks AWFUL, but I can always enjoy all three films.
Neo is the one and Smith is the zero, both important in creating the code.

‘ *Navras*’ is a song from The Matrix Revolutions soundtrack by goa trance band Juno Reactor, composed by Don Davis and featuring vocal elements by Lakshmi Shankar and Azam Ali. The song contains an adaption of the Asato ma mantra found in the *Hindu* sacred text the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, section I.iii.28, used in the soundtrack of the movie trilogy The Matrix. The name Navras might refer to the notion of nine rasas (nava rasa) in Sanskrit aesthetics.

I just have 1 question , half way through this, when you said “this has been done 5 times before” (by “the chosen one”/ Zion) - I miss where they say or deduct “5 times before”. Can you clarify and thank you!!
It's in the conversation with the architect. Great question, honestly. That conversation has really fast dialogue and hard to catch it all.
Always remember, The Matrix is the gift to all nations from Australia. Thank you Australia!
Nice analysis (and yes you really sound like Nerdwriter, and I don't care, this is a very soothing voice and tone, keep it up ;) )
One tiny little thing got in the way of full enjoyment: be careful with the sound volume. It got really low when you showed moments of the film, and reaaaaally high when the writer was explaining stuff at the end. I have no idea how this works, but I'm pretty sure you can tweak that out ;)
Anyway: Keep it coming, you gave me a craving for more!
How does this not have more views???
What is real...
Hinduism is asking these questions for the eternity...
When I watch this trilogy..
I m like... Hey is that.... Are they..
Wait a sec..

It's Maya, but Maya is not bad, it will lead us to the real, the truth the Moksha3
Oh man, what’s the song at 0:35? I recognize it
the concept/scenarios of the one and their encounters with the architect are similar to what happens in the movie snowpiercer. ive just noticed the similarities and i wonder if the creators for snowpiercer took inspiration from the matrix
Great VE. Good job bro.
I love your video on this!
"Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
very nice and interesting standpoint, thx for inspiration. How did you solve the copyright problem? Greetings from Germany
If you read this, you should check out Mark Passio's lecture on the matrix decoded.
Could anybody please tell me the title of song that starts at 0:35?
Session by linkin park
...and then all of the eventualities within one eventuality........awesome scene with the architect to me.
were there scenes from part 3? I've only seen 1 & not sure if I seen all of 2
In this video? Oh yeah, I used a ton of footage from the whole trilogy
@@daniel_netzel I gather I should see part 3 'movie' huh? Bet the farm I've already been living it. That is if the writers didn't stray too far from the original. Thanks
i feel like i heard all this on another video not word for word but eerily similar
Also if up for a 2nd question - why is the ship “Mark III” . Nebechanezzar was Babylon king in real life and there were a king I and King II before Babylon downfall. That I keep trying to figure out.
You really really deserve more subs...
I appreciate that! Honestly it's my own fault for uploading so inconsistently.
I love that you used Session by Linkin Park at the beginning of the video.
What is the name of the linkin park song used at 0:35? anyone know?
your way of talking and explaning reminds me of nerdwriter
Yeah...I get that a lot :P
The fact that they are going to release Matrix 4 scrapes me and excites me at the same time
Song around 1:11? I know this song but it’s killing me I can’t remember
linkin park
Session- Linkin Park
The question lies in whether can you feel the difference?we cant achieve higher existance without accending to it, only than you know what you should know. How can you change the existential threat for good without break through the repeating loop of salvation? People experience fear they afraid of losing they hope things will continued some how but what they didnt see is it also take up space. To improve and grow one need space, and the ultimate sacrifice is to lose something.
YES!! Thank you for making this.
The beauty of the matrix is how it is constructed of binaries. However, unlike most popular narratives the binary is not simply hope and despair, but hope and indifference.
Great analysis, even when you didn´t mention quantum physics.
Thanks! Yeah, I narrowed the focus to best fit a short video such as this, there's a ton more worth discussing about these movies though.
I only wish that the audio had smooth transitions between mic and film sound.
It's amazing how much people take from these movies when they stop whining about CG effects and Keanu who, let's face it, deserves credit for supporting these kinds of off-beat films.
That was very informative man.
A former friend once said while growing up as we came back from the movie theater that its important to watch this movie so there wont have to be one.
Andrew Dean i dont know if he meant what he said, but what he said is perhaps what is meant
What a video ?
Spectacular 💫
Thank you :>
We must sacrifice wanting to be reborn. Sacrifice the loving of one, one that you want, to love all. To release desire is to be free and be reborn.
Interesting
Love the video but what is the colossus music doing here? Or am I going mad
Colossus music? I'm not sure what you mean. But all music was taken from the soundtracks of the movies.
3:19
What is that?
It's taken from the track "The Power Plant".
Oh it is, you could easily fill 10 hours of material covering the philosophy of these films, squeezing it all into a short video isn't going to do it properly, but hopefully it served as a good primer for a lot of the fundamental ideas they explore.
yes, true
Who was the previous one that rebuilt Zion? Cypher?
Excellent analysis.
Soundtrack please , it will be great.🙏and good video.
Any song in particular you were wondering about? Thank you!
Film Radar It is when the girls sings aaa, aaaa .🙏
Could you give me a timestamp?
Film Radar It begins at the 11 second of this video.

What is the soundtrack at 00:26 ?
The one playing from the beginning? It's called "Welcome to the Real World", and starting right after that is "Session" by Linkin Park.
The best series ever
Extraordinary.
Thank you!
What was the audio up to the 1:22 ?
The video starts with "Welcome to the Real World" from the original soundtrack, and then it moves to "Session" by Linkin Park.
Legit never seen anyone use that track ever, its one of their more hidden gems, good stuff man!
Love deadmau5 in the background
Why the fuck does this only have 45K views...?
Haha, I wonder that myself sometimes xD
@@daniel_netzel Promote it.
Maybe because in paradise free will is useless, whatever you choose to do the outcome is always satisfying, good, pleasing. When there is pain and suffering free will matters, because the path you take will (most of the time) have both positive and negative consequences.
awesome video mate
Cheers
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your comment!
that samsara explained in the video is the westernized definition.
