starfighter11 so it failed. Nobody experienced it as an allegory for the trans experience. Everybody saw it as a rehash of Plato’s cave, because that’s what it is
Last year I rewatched The Matrix Trilogy and I kinda realized that it features a lot of parallels and hidden meanings/symbols about being transgender or transsexual, or anyone from the LGBT+ community. I knew "Sense8" was about that, and then as it is very similar to "Cloud Atlas", the latter is also about it, or has hidden meanings and parallels about it. So this inspired me to look at The Matrix as such, and I found a lot of those meanings, especially in the first two (Revolutions has barely any substance tbh). This made The Matrix even more interesting as it reveals just how personal it is to The Wachowski Sisters, and adds an even deeper layer to the film, that already had and will continue to have a lot of them. All my respect and love to The Wachowski Sisters, who don't really have the best career in directing, but made a few really special and unique films.
No. It doesn‘t have „hidden meanings about being transgendered and the LGTB movement“. It just combines „male and female“ energies and shows that both exists in one person. It plays with the UNIverse and DUALism and one character is literally called TRInity. (One, two, three). What is next? Will they say all ancient beliefs are about the LGTB movement? The Ilias is also totally LGTB! - Because many ancient deities had both genders.

A year later, Lilly Wachowski essentially confirms that the movie was a reflection of what her and Lana went through as closeted trans women. Did I say periodt? PERIODT.
What's amazing about The Matrix is it's an allegory for so many systems of control or oppression. If you identify with the human's fight whether it's racism, sexism, classism, capitalism or whatever, you can live vicariously through Neo. It wasn't until I saw Sense8, the Wachowski's show which was very clearly a trans allegory and contains many similarities to The Matrix, that it became apparent that's what they were going for. Even if you don't wanna contemplate any deeper meanings, it's still one of the coolest, most enjoyable action, sci-fi movies ever made.

I watched a bootlegged video on Facebook that you made and someone reuploaded without creds. However, I noticed the patreon link at the end so I came over and subscribed. This has got to be one of the best takes on the Matrix I've seen (no theories or lore) just an explanation for how it was made and why it was made the way it was. Excellent presentation, cheers.
Loved that you used the "Cloud Atlas Sextet" another masterpiece from these geniuses. Sense8 too is filled with so many metaphors, a show way ahead of its time.
While I loved your video essays, this new format you're experimenting with is interesting and poignant in its own way. Very interesting to see the way you're piecing together film and its "history" through the research you're doing and the "thesis" you approach every video. Keep it up!

I don't know how you came up with it, Jack, but i'm overwhelmed with this edit and cried a little bit. Would make everyone I know watch it. Would reference it a lot in the future. Thank you and keep it up
I knew the wachowski's were trans but I had literally never made the connection on the trapped in your mind aspects of the Matrix, very interesting video, thank you,
Daamn this is sick. I've had similar ideas rewatching the Matrix after seeing Sense 8 and hearing about their transitions but wow, you've articulated this so incredibly well. I really hope to see more videos that take this format but it is certainly not the easiest way to get a point across (even though it might be the only way for some). Solid work!

THAT!
One more thing… That movie is bigger then personal struggle. It’s about the world and learning from our mistakes, it’s bout adapting and going beyond physical appearance, it’s finding beauty in our flaws and surpassing them. I do not feel pity for other people’s inner quarrels. That’s your fight, no one else’s. Thank you for this beautiful movie. 🔥🖤💪🏾

This is so gorgeously done. I'm not even a huge fan of the original, but I do have a respect for it. By using the sisters's words alone with the imagery, you showed something in a way that would have been weakened with a third person narration.
I've heard that one character, I think it was Switch, was meant to change genders when they enter the Matrix, but the idea was scraped out of fear that it would just confuse the audience.
@@JediOfTheRepublic Not sure what the "yawn" is all about, whether you think I am insulting the audience intelligence or I am justifying Trans suppression, or some other reason. I think it made sense to remove the gender swapping of Switch. She was such a minor character. If she swap genders when entering, I think many people would go "where did this character come from?" Not realizing that one character has a swap of actors. While you could certainly take the time to explain it in the movie, it would be a distraction from such a very minor character.
Well I did spot a few transphobes, but they are mostly just sticking to their boring dead memes that contain slurs, and misgendering the wachowski sisters. Nothing I haven't seen them do worse a thousand times over.
I think most of us can agree that the narrative The Matrix tells is universal enough that ... oh, i just hit the 7 minute mark and you explain this. Never mind.

Wonderful video and I really appreciate you covering this in the way you chose to! Always look forward to your work!
The thing that made Batman v Superman suck so bad is the unnecessary stuff they added in like Doomsday. This movie had the potential to be a straightforward political thriller but they wasted a lot of screen time by adding unnecessary scenes that mess up the plot and tone of the film. See, there are beautifully shot, brilliantly written, emotionally impactful scenes which were what BvS had the potential to be as a film. But no, all we got were an f-load of subplots, useless characters, dumb motivations, and again, the Doomsday villain. Wouldn't it have been better if the film lived up to its title -- Batman v Superman?
It would be better if Batman vs. Superman really had a sequel such as "The Death Of Superman" which featured Doomsday and such. But no. How in the world that comic went straight to BvS within a few minutes after the climax between Batman and Superman?
Even with Doomsday it could have been at least decent. Batman should not kill. It saves the Martha scene. Sure the action may not be as good, but it saves a stupid part of the film.
it says a lot about the wachowski's writing that they were able to craft the deeper life lessons from a narrow personal journey into the broad story about self overcoming that the matrix is. it is not about gender specifically but you can see the writers internal journey and questioning infuse the film with its philosophical weight. it is able to capture the process of self discovery without narrowing its audience or appeal, its a path we all walk after all. and while hers was one of gender, it can just as easily be about philosophy, self image, self acceptance, identity or growth. truly great stories provide frameworks for the audience to explore themselves with guidance and to that end the matrix is right on the money, and a truly great movie
This is awesome!!! It really gives the story more meaning in a way I did not exist. There’s nothing more interesting than putting an artist next to their work and connecting the dots between them.
This is beautifully captured! I haven't "felt" the trans view of the Matrix quite so much as you show it here. But TBH when it was first presented to me I was encountering way too much of the Jesus analogue, or the woo myth, or the early rumblings of a right wing misinterpretation. I rarely see these "deeper references" in movies when people claim them, it pretty much always feels like trying to grab something that isn't there; but this time it really seems to be there. Not sure how much of it might have been on purpose or just ideas so deep inside her that they went through without noticing, but this was really interesting.
could be intentional, though doesn't have to be. this reminds me of Steven Spielberg on inside the actors studio, asked whether he intentionally made it so humans and aliens communicated through computers and music, to represent his mom and dad reconciling, one a computer scientist and one a musician. he looked like his mind was blown at the interpretation. he did it wasn't conscious, but might as well be why he did so.
He is reaching with this video.
@@stephonthomas9742 It's not reaching. It shows that when you have certain kind of perspective because of who you are und your experiences, you might get something else out of the movie. To quote the video: "There are so many different ways to interpret the movie. [...]There's no correct way to interpret a movie but certain interpretations can give us powerful insights into the world we live in"
@@stephonthomas9742 Well the directors just came out and flat out confirmed it was meant to be an allegory for the trans experience so...
starfighter11 so it failed.
@@denisenova7494 One of the most stupid comments I have read in this comment section.
The creators are trans, they said they made this specifically as a trans analogy, you are twisting and contorting yourself to deny reality because you cant bear the fact that trans people exist and write stories you enjoy.
I love how you are so surprised and incredulous about the idea of old religions or works of art being written from a trans experience, because statistically speaking some of them were.
Your transphobia is obvious and gross
*_This video was amazing! Thanks for sharing_*
Now I See It
This is an extraordinary piece. A fresh perspective not only on the film, but on the way of presenting video essays even. Bravo.
Wow, I'm so speechless, I've never thought of The Matrix like that before. Thank you.
A year later, Lilly Wachowski essentially confirms that the movie was a reflection of what her and Lana went through as closeted trans women. Did I say periodt? PERIODT.
The name of your channel seems especially fitting for this video. Nice work!
20 years later and The Matrix is still my favourite movie. Brilliant video btw.
I’m so glad I watched this. It’s so apparent how you’ve been perfecting your narrative editing, and I truly look up to you. When the time comes and I get constant income I hope I’ll be able to support you with more than words, but for now: thanks for making this free amazing content, you’re a great person :)
Love that this video focuses primarily on Lana's responses and thoughts behind the Matrix. Letting the creator speak for their creations. Superb job on the editing
that only works if it fits. when the creators of Luca said it's not a gay comming of age story, people ignore and say now that it belongs to the public. it can be anything the viewer wants, anything but what the writers said it is
The zoom in on M and F was so deep.
This video made me genuinely cry when I first watched it, I was figuring things about myself out and seeing those feelings expressed, hidden but in plain sight, in one of my favourite movies of all time really broke me up in the best way possible.
Thank you.
This gave me chills! Great edit to show a very interesting point of view. This was an awesome experience. Thanks, mate.
Loved that you used the "Cloud Atlas Sextet" another masterpiece from these geniuses. Sense8 too is filled with so many metaphors, a show way ahead of its time.
This video aged perfectly
While I loved your video essays, this new format you're experimenting with is interesting and poignant in its own way. Very interesting to see the way you're piecing together film and its "history" through the research you're doing and the "thesis" you approach every video. Keep it up!
Agree!
Just wow! This is straight up genius. I've never seen anything like it. The birth of a new perspective on a work real-time along the live event -- speech of the artist. I don't know how you came up with it, Jack, but i'm overwhelmed with this edit and cried a little bit. Would make everyone I know watch it. Would reference it a lot in the future. Thank you and keep it up
Always a pleasure to check on one of your video essays man! Keep going ;)
Don't assume it's gender.
This video explains the name of your channel perfectly
Oh man the second that cloud atlas piano opening started..... it gets me every time!
I loved the "between M and F" edit.
I knew the wachowski's were trans but I had literally never made the connection on the trapped in your mind aspects of the Matrix, very interesting video, thank you,
Thank you for making this, Jack. Quickly judging different perspective is something that I am guilty of and need to work on. This was a good watch.
Solid work!
No matter what anyone says about this franchise, the slow mo action scenes are iconic
*First timer caller, long time listener* Dude, this is your best video yet. That edit was riveting. I did not look away and I shed a few tears. I hoped for that from the thumbnail and title but you delivered beyond expectation. I was seriously and sincerely moved. The work you (and your team?) have been putting into your videos is really paying off. You make paying attention an art...and now I see where you got your channel name. Hats off!
this video is a masterclass showcase of visual + audio. lana talking about feeling like she was in between the boys' and the girls' lines on top of the zoom in between the M and F of SYSTEM FAILURE was fuckin phenomenal
"of all the thing i love about my hair, high on the list is the way children stare at it with fascination and delight i can sometimes see their imagination bright in their eyes recalibrating the possible. it is my hope that symbol like pink dreads might help them understand normal is something that is not have to be define for you, but rather by you." THAT!
but POC only allowed dreadlock
The editing on this is perfect.
the background music is from Cloud Atlas.
As a transgender man, this video made me feel really happy. Thanks for creating it and I hope you'll make more wonderful content like this! 👍
@@stonaraptor8196 Yes!
@@stonaraptor8196 You know you can google right ? like no offense but its not comfortable to have to explain it over and over and over to people who can just google in 2 seconds
You can’t just perfectly layer Lana’s HRC award speech, scenes from the Matrix, and the Cloud Atlas Sextet and not expect me to start crying
Thank you so much for making this video. While I personally knew most everything about this perspective going in (being trans and constantly following your favourite creators and their works certainly helps), from reading the comments it looks to be eye-opening to so many people. So, thank you, both for making me cry in this confused happiness and for showing so many people this for the first time
If anyone’s interested, Sarah from on the channel _let’s talk about stuff._ is making a series that talks about each of the Wachowski films and analyses them according to certain reoccurring themes, including sexuality and transness -and also vore.- Only the first video is out so far, on Bound (1996), and I recommend everyone check it out if this kind of perspective interests them
Lol I remember even pastors using The Matrix as a metaphor in their sermons when I was a teenager. There is something universal or fundamental about it, which I love. Thanks for highlighting this perspective through the identity of one of it's creators
True. My church does that. Shows what a great work of art it is, so universally human in theme that anybody can see it whichever way they relate.
Because The Matrix has messianic alliterations in it. I mean, it's not that hard to find them. They kind slap you in the face.
absolutely lovely video, I’m in tears!
I'm not a trangender person, hopefully. But I know a lot of transgender people and I see that their lifes are a constant torture, I feel so bad about trangenders, it must be so hard to bear, especially in the country I live in (Russia). I wish more people could understand other people's conditions. Gonna show this video to some of my friends, they are into Matrix, but are transophobic, hope I'll woke up some empathy in them
KiryTF It won’t. This video has nothing in it that could change a RUSSIAN homophobe/transphobe’s mind. Good luck to your friends, who are very brave because to be out in Russia is to put your physical safety, even your life on the line every day in order to be true to yourself.
@@dildonius actually, the transgender situation in russia isn't very much bad. You can legaly change your sex, get new documents, get medical treatmet etc
I will never watch Matrix the same way again. Thank you for that brotha!
Dude i just sub'ed. Now I'm about to binge watch da hell out these videos. Seriously thank you.
i watched the matrix trilogy when i was cis and i attempted to look for some trans bits of it for fun, to the point where i kinda just had my eyes and ears wide open for any hints. now as someone who realized that they've been feeling gender dysphoria this whole time and has chosen to identify as bigender, coming back to this was like finally seeing in 4k. i finally understand now.
infact that ''my name is neo'' scene feels SO fucking powerful to me, even if i have no intent of changing my name: BECAUSE WELL. IT'S A REJECTION OF YOUR FORMER IDENTITY: ONE THAT YOU WERE BORN INTO AND ONE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ''ACTING'' AS, AND FINALLY EMBRACING WHO YOU REALLY ARE
BRAVO LANA AND LILY. BRAVO.
Lovely, moving, and heartwarming. Thanks for this video- Matrix remains one of my favourite movies for this very same interpretation.
Yet there were TV shows that had episodes based around a guy entering a girls body. Yeah, it would confuse audiences. yawn
Went into the comments like CJ_here_we_go_again.mp4 but people are actually being insightful and receptive. Pleasant surprise, well done folks.
Never mind.
Something you should have also haven mentioned that I feel is very important. Originally the character Switch was supposed to a different gender in and out of the matrix, hence the nickname Switch. They switched gender when they entered the matrix.
Huh. Now I see it.
I'll be leaving now...
This video is super duper gay.
@@mfowler6 yeah, it kicks ass
Gotta say I think I've found one of the best channels on UA-cam. Almost every single one of your videos is AMAZING. That's not something I can say about most of the people I subscribe to. You sir are amazing.
(Also do you have any plans on doing videos on more animated movies? I'd love to see you pick apart a Studio Ghibli film.)
My name is Neo bit gave me chills
My father sees the movie as very libertarian and anti authoritarian. So amazing how art can touch people in completely different ways!
being transgender is at it's core anti authoritarian
Great job, especially the editing. It had me feeling for Lana and her sister, whilst deepening my appreciation for the film series even more. Thank you for this, truly.
The progression in this video is so empowering ! The way you edited this is very kind and wholesome, I love it !
Why are people downvoting?
Dude you’re such an amazing editor it’s insane
Boy, you learn new everyday. This brings light on something which is always there hiding in the plain sight.
This was phenomenal to watch. Nicely done.
Big reminder that Switch was supposed to, well, switch sex between the matrix and the real world, and investors vetoed that idea.
There's nothing in the matrix to suggest that.
What a great edit!
Congrats, dude. Really.
I recently thought of the parallels of her identity and the thematic line in the movie. Great video. Articulated this topic as best as it could.
We do dumb commentaries on movies. You're out here breaking down metaphilosophical ideas about directors as reflected through their movies. Hats off to you.
I'm a simple guy. I can watch The Matrix just for the thrill and cinematography. Still, adding this layer will make an eventual rewatch even better! Thank you!!!
YeeSoest whaddayamean “eventual”???
This was an incredible perspective to take on such a powerful film! I felt so many strong emotions watching the collage you put together here and felt wonderfully moved to make sense of the film through her transition. Wonderful video and I really appreciate you covering this in the way you chose to! Always look forward to your work!
The thing that made Batman v Superman suck
so bad is the unnecessary stuff they added in like Doomsday.
Are we watching the same video? 🤔
Amazing, whole new different perspective about this movie. It even makes a lot more sense now
Overwhelming and incredibly beautiful.

I've been a fan of yours for a long time, but somehow I missed this. What a wonderfully done video. Thank you.
One of my favorite movies of all time...watch it like 10 times when it hit the theaters...this was interesting stuff and made a lot of sense...🙏
Sometimes when I press the like button with so much joy, I feel like the counter will go up by a thousand units...
it says a lot about the wachowski's writing that they were able to craft the deeper life lessons from a narrow personal journey into the broad story about self overcoming that the matrix is. it is not about gender specifically but you can see the writers internal journey and questioning infuse the film with its philosophical weight. it is able to capture the process of self discovery without narrowing its audience or appeal, its a path we all walk after all. and while hers was one of gender, it can just as easily be about philosophy, self image, self acceptance, identity or growth. truly great stories provide frameworks for the audience to explore themselves with guidance and to that end the matrix is right on the money, and a truly great movie
This was one of the best videos I have ever seen.
this is a fucking astounding piece of media and i just wanted to take the time to thank you for taking the time to make it
This is awesome!!! It really gives the story more meaning in a way I did not exist. There’s nothing more interesting than putting an artist next to their work and connecting the dots between them.
Well... You were right after all... Congrats!!! 🔥🔥🔥
This is beautifully captured! I haven't "felt" the trans view of the Matrix quite so much as you show it here. But TBH when it was first presented to me I was encountering way too much of the Jesus analogue, or the woo myth, or the early rumblings of a right wing misinterpretation. It's quietly awe inspiring how much our subconscious mind shapes our conscious creations.
The Matrix is perfect to me because it has so many layers. Thanks for adding another layer
I've never typed this in my life but:
Mind = blown
We're always on the edge of our seats, awaiting for the next video! Awesome video, yet again!
very interested! thank you for this video. i like that you let the movie and the creators talk for themselves
Now I can tell I saw it.
To put it in a quote: "woah"
