Harri, Dionne Warwick is the original singer of this song. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David they wrote it for her, 12/1967. Aretha Franklin was released in 7/1968.
Great Bacharach-David song, beautifully interpreted by Ms. Warwick. 1968 was the height of the Vietnam War, and this song was very popular among many in the states, for obvious reasons.
One of the great singers, from the sixties, and one of my late sister's favourites. Written and arranged for Dionne, by Burt Bacharach. No voice like hers.
Her voice- "diamonds in my ears" - you have a way with words yourself, Harry. Well said. ❤❤❤ She's one of the prettiest female voices ever. Dionne & Barbra - the two best female singers of the 20th century, imho.
Wow. This is a stunningly sharp recording from the Sullivan show, and this was a fantastic performance. Besides the Beatles, Doors, Beach Boys, etc. appearances on Sullivan”s show, this was a powerful cultural event. Bacharach and Warwick… THIS was the 60’s at its finest. Gee, I wish we had a color tv back then, but I’m sure we didn’t. Still, this was goosebumps then, and goosebumps now. Fantastic. Her vocal harmony with the trumpets near the end was perfect. Just as Burt wrote it up. High water mark for American culture. Glorious!!!
Yes, it is a bit rushed. Hurry up/pray fast was the message that she got. Really unfortunate for such a gifted vocalist with so many hits. Thanks for the request and the reaction, Harri.
Dionne Warwick has had a huge career spanning almost 6 decades. She had so many hits. Burt Bacharach wrote most of her best songs. "Don't Make Me Over", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?", "You're My World", "Message to Michael", "Alfie", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Walk On By", "(Theme from) Valley Of The Dolls", "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me", "This Girl's In Love With You", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" etc.
Aretha Franklin had such a hit with this people forgot just how good Dion Warwick was singing it. She had a series of fabulous hits singing Burt Bachrach Hal David songs in the sixties. It was a wonderful time for American pop music. I lived through it and there's been nothing like it since. "Promises Promises" just popped into my head but that's just one of them.
I can certainly hear the difference between her recorded version and this live performance .. It's a pity they made her speed it up, as it definitely feels rushed ..Her voice is still fantastic, but that lovely relaxed feel that you get from the original is not there here .. They could easily have granted her around another 20 seconds, and it would have made the world of difference.
I used to sing (ahem) this to my baby daughter. I wasn't gettin up, made up, or thinking about or for no one but her. She's 31 next week and I say a little prayer for her all the time. Forever and ever she'll stay in my heart. I think I prefer Aretha's but will listen to Dionne as I can't recall hers.
Dionne is still the greatest. From her young days...when I was the same age. And the hundreds of songs...BERT BACKRACK wrote. Her sound will never grow old. HAPPY FATHERS DAY EVERYBODY.
Dionne had a pretty good lineage with her cousin being the late Whitney Houston. Bacharach and David wrote this with Dionne in mind. Aretha had this on the B - side . 😊 Dionne's version got to #4 on the US Billboard 100. The record went on to sell 1 million records. Aretha's cover came out a year later and reached #10. Both great songs with Aretha having an entire backup band. I definitely prefer the less glammed up version by Dionne. To each his own, both great.😊
Legendary 🌹 Dionne Warwick with Legendary songwriter the late Burt Bacharach who we just recently lost a few years ago.. the next cover I ❤was from The Queen of soul Aretha Franklin .
you should look into the impact of all of Motown and Barrie Gordie"s "Wall of Sound" you can hear on this song an hundreds of others.. I grew up in Detroit doing those years. it was amazing
This song was actually intended to be the B side, with Windows of the World as the A side, but the DJs kept playing this song. Both sides of the single are great.
Written by the late greats: Songwriters: Burt Bacharach / Hal David. The horn section is signature Bacharach and Dionne Warwick is a national treasure. Heck, all 3 are treasures.
Am I wrong, or is this song wildly misunderstood? People claim it's about romantic bliss, with lyrics like "We never will part" and "I run for the bus/While riding I think of us"... yet there is no WE, nor US. The lyrics' final twist proves they are *not* a couple, and Dionne is lamenting unrequited love: "Please love me too / Answer my prayer"
They shouldn't have rushed this, her voice is to be savored. She's so beautiful and elegant, gorgeous voice, a legend 💞
Agreed 100%...that means to upset the song !.
one of the great female singers of our time

From Ed Sullivan's show on January 7, 1968

Our neighbor had a color tv in 66 or 67.
She was such a perfect match for Bacharach songs!
Agree! And I love Burt Bacharah!

Classy lady classy voice ! 👍
Dionne's is my favorite version of this song.
Huge smash back in the day. Dionne's version was the one that aired on radio for long time

One of the few 45's I remember having. Love female singers that work in their lower range too.
I have always loved her voice. This is one of my favorites. Daniel’s dad is probably around my age! Great choice. Thanks Harri and Daniel 🌺✌️
Fantastic voice

I agree. It does inhibit the richness of her voice somewhat.
The Ray Block orchestra on Ed Sullivan always played great accompaniment for pop music. Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" is a great example.

I think I prefer Aretha's but will listen to Dionne as I can't recall hers.
One of the very best. Thanks Daniel and Harri.
Thanks Cyn, getting ready to listen to your great pick of Nino Tempo and April
Stevens. Can't wait. 😊
Dionne is still the greatest. From her young days...when I was the same age. And the hundreds of songs...BERT BACKRACK wrote.
Her sound will never grow old. HAPPY FATHERS DAY EVERYBODY.
Yes they are both fabulous. I can't choose.
Burt Bacharach loved writing for her voice, she was a constant sound of the early sixties. So many great songs
Love Dionne❤

Gotta think there's not a lot of other pop songs with the chorus in 11/4 time. You have to dig deep to find this kind of creativity these days.
We seen Dionne a few years ago and she is still sounding amazing
Legendary 🌹 Dionne Warwick with Legendary songwriter the late Burt Bacharach who we just recently lost a few years ago.. the next cover I ❤was from The Queen of soul Aretha Franklin .
My sh#t from her is WALK ON BY.
Next to that which was covered version by Isaac Hayes was the bomb !!

YES! My parents have Isaac's album.
Luv that song..but too fast here..( it was 60s tv) I like the slower version
💖💖💖

A shame to speed up a classic like that. Dionne's voice was unique.
She is Whitney Houston's aunt. She won the Kennedy Center Award and sings now in Las Vegas. In her 80's!
My favorite version of the song. Dionnes collaborations with Burt Bacharach are amazing
One of her best and Bacharach
Bacharach Warwick a peak in sophisticated pop that's long gone
This song was actually intended to be the B side, with Windows of the World as the A side, but the DJs kept playing this song. Both sides of the single are great.
I Don't know if you've played it yet but "Do you know the way to San Jose " is the best of Dionne.
Written by the late greats: Songwriters: Burt Bacharach / Hal David. The horn section is signature Bacharach and Dionne Warwick is a national treasure. Heck, all 3 are treasures.
Aretha Franklin also has a terrific version of this classic song.
I prefer the studio version. I like the piano figures in that recording. They use horns here. This is also speeded up.
Whoa, why so fast? I’ve never heard it with this tempo.
Whitney Houston's first cousin!
This song is supposed to be more lush and leisurely. Too bad it's sped up like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
On the Sullivan show...they had time restrictions due to being a one hour show. My opinion. But I LOVED HER SINGING.
This song was covered by Aretha Franklin
Hmm, it does sound rushed.

She’s Whitney Houston before Whitney. And her real cousin.
'sped up version'? barbaric
