"Honed to a fine performance edge from their live forays to Europe earlier in the year, WIRE present their fierce, high-velocity set based around their highly successful album SEND. Their first album in over a decade, marked a return to their trademark gimlet, shivved, short sharp shocked writing style.
Filmed by visual artist Tom Gidley in forensic detail, this document shows the complete visceral set and deliberately excludes the usual rock music celebration of place and time, instead
concentrating on giving the viewer the closest of contact with a band often misrepresented as enigmatic, cold and distant.
Also included is a bonus selection of pieces captured by Observation Camera #1 of the second half of WIRE's April 2003 Flag:Burning performance/installation at the Only Connect festival at The Barbican, London.
The set by avant stage designer Es Devlin was specifically commissioned by WIRE for this one-off performance.
Whilst based on the same body of work as the performance at Triptych, this is WIRE seen from the other end of the telescope, willingly surrendering their personal performance to the service of the machinery of a unique, complex theatrical spectacle in a manner rarely allowed in the rock world rife with ego and self-aggrandisement."
The Scottish Play: 2004 was released on 25 March 2005 on Pink Flag records.

I can't remember if it was the following night or not, but I do believe it was the next gig. Aberdeen. I was at uni there and saw bands as diverse as Faust and Arab Strap while in that cold, wet joint. The Wire gig was like having teeth pulled but with feelings of ecstasy as opposed to pain. It was brutal and it was comforting. Torture and contentment. Rage and peace. Yeah, I could go on all night. I feel privileged to have witnessed this the following evening. Oh, I also had Tinnitus for weeks afterwards due to standing too close to the speakers during this group of old dudes making music that was more essential than anyone else's at the time; well, except what was way underground...
i was a Punk, i was a blue hair, black clothes and all, and WIRE was our band i 1979, My 19 years of age in Portugal. And i was a drummer then.
Wire ... The best Post Punk band in history!!!
...if it´s the only postpunk band u know so far...
One of the most important Post Punk Band of the history is Right to say!
@@markuselipka Please name some post punk band better and with more longevity and quality than Wire.
@@nt559 there`re a couple. killing joke, joy division, public image ltd, just to name three of uncountable more.
i always struggle with terms like `the best`. it`s art. it`s not a question about quantity. it`s a question about personal taste. nothing else. wire are great. i love a million bands and i couldn`t say which one of them i listened to the most. and it doesn`t fukking matter. each single one of them is a unique treasure to me. u see? cheeerz!
Are you kidding? You need to see a band called PIL. One of their tunes renders Wire's dicography meaningless.
In the Art of Stopping is one of the most cathartic pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. It’s gotten me through stressful times.
Wow the best I've heard in a long time. Glad this Music is still being made and the people out of their skulls. Wire is here real as punk as in '77 . I am now 65 and still love this **** fueled Rock and Roll.
Pink Flag is the best album of the entire era. Never gets old. So f#%^&*# smart.
Fucking amazing band. Visceral in a way that no-one else manages. And what an intro tune!
The perfect combination of electronic/noise/lo-fi/rockng guits/acrid smoke band.
I saw themin paris long ago : during the WHOLE SHOW Gotobed had his eyes closed !
- I found no better than this vid to put my old hi-fi gear from the late 70's to the test, after all these years : well, I must say my NEC 8000 Series amplifier feeding the pair of big bass-reflex 3-A three-way speakers told me that time is of very little effect on them. And my 4 walls complained to the police about the volume too...
Excellent performance.
Bruce Gilbert fantastic fantastic guitarrist, Metronomic Gotobed
@EarthBound Why?
56:23 best live performance of a single song ever!
I usually avoid live broadcast and prefer studio takes but Wire is on top of my personal best band list and now I know the why ~
The Cream always rises to the Top
the last five minutes of "Pink Flag" are extremely brutal and amazing,a little bit like Neu! Lilac Angel song...
Raw and sensible the soul of WIRE
Everything is great! Favourite band.
Fair is foul and foul is fair ... but this is fucking fantastic.... fanks !!!!!
+EnosEverything stop biting my hair, will you
a fantastic bloody racket
A slayer of giants in the finest of stockings.
I commented on 99.9 at the beginning of this terrorising method of music. I saw them at their very next gig after this night. They were brutal and brilliant. And now... Do we actually have any new music that is as big, bold and brave? Yet this is DECADES 'old' 🤔
just awesome
beam me up with a wire scotty.
- Ready Sir.
"I'M LISTENING"
Amazing! True originals! 👍👌
Over twenty years later, it is still amazing
Great live performance recording quality Sound! Wire is more Than Post Punk: A kind of original smart dynamic finest energetic genuine Chameleon of the Color Style always in Experimental Sound Evolution!
Bruce's last bow...
Oh, how we miss Bruce. I saw them play a warm-up gig in Dalston mid-eighties and Bruce spent the entire evening trying to get his amp to work without success. The beginning of Wir, perhaps?
A shame they overdubbed all his guitar parts...
@@trefwoordpunk2225 Why were they overdubbed?
What an intro!
Gilbert and Gotobed seem a bit like Watts and Wyman on stage... One would swear Colin is on meth, and Lewis is a mix between Gilmour and A terminator when he grins...
I'm standing on my chair -
I was at the Barbican gig. Ace it was.
none of their sets ever sound the same
Take that, Radiohead.
Radiohead is only the last sound...Wire is the Bigin....Wire is 1975.
- Radiohead is like a "beyond the consumption date limit band", which means that you can chew this meat at your own risk, where Wire is the forever- stubborn post-modern archetypical formation you're always hungry for. It is worth noticing that it should be the other way round : look at the dates... but there I was talking about sheer inspired music and inventiveness of course.
My ears still bleeding!
Me mates found me shakin' in the bloody closet screaming More!
MORE WIRE!!!!
(I haven't slept since!)
SCARY
It's The Wall o Wire They can play a bit too
Es Deviln brought me here.
Sublime
Wire illustrates the difference between art and entertainment. Entertainment aims to give the audience what they pay for, like a hooker. Art aims to make you think about the nature of what you are seeing or hearing. What is the nature of rock at this moment of technology and culture?
I'm an hour deep into my second WIRE gig tonight and both totally in awe of how amazingly tuneless it is but I also keep wondering why they they are bothering to play pop music!
WOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!
a one-key wonder
Cool as fuck 😎
I can imagine hearing this on LSD and not knowing what the fuck was going on. It;s so farr emoved from pop music.
How good are Wire!??.
not really that great in the grand scheme of things. PIL Cardiacs This Heat ar/were far superior Acts.
@@davidames1746 I hate do disagree with a fellow Cardiacs fan, but that's a horrible take. Wire are superb, and the notion that some bands are somehow objectively better than others is straight up infantile. All bands appeal to different people for different reasons.
Phenomenally ❤
22:03 and 53:50 two best COMET ever
👍👍👍
les tontons flingueurs... pas de gras; sec comme un coup de trique... ça, c'est de la musique de bonhomme!...

A pity the only live parts is the sound between the songs....I wish they could rerelease this without tampering with the audio...
Where was this revealed, in interviews?
you may be confusing this with Recycling Sherwood Forest
$ end $ and
still don't hear a single...
Absolutely David. It's a rotten shame that with this racket I'm afraid they'll never be top of the hit parade 🙂
Is there a 12 minute version of every tune available on 12"?
Is that how you ‘measure’ art? By ‘singles’? Lol
