  • More homeowners are coming forward saying State Farm is denying their water leak damage claims. CBS 8 is Working for You to find out if this is a pattern by the insurance company.
Mark Matthews has lived in his Chula Vista home for 25 years. And, he says, he’s been a customer of State Farm for more than 30 years, without ever filing a claim.
Matthews said a hot water pipe above his kitchen started leaking on April 21, and caused what he estimated to be $20,000 in damage, flooding out his dining room. “One little pipe that was just drip, drip, drip, drip, drip,” said Matthews.

@george It is clear that you did not pay attention to the video. The adjuster claimed it was an outgoing leak, while the plumber's report indicated it was a sudden burst. The question now arises: how did the adjuster come to the conclusion that it was an outgoing leak? Considering the adjuster's background and history of approval versus denial, is the adjuster sufficiently educated to make that determination?

Some of the tradesman didn’t like it tho - but others were extremely helpful and even explained it as they did it. A lot of new construction homes now have PVC plastic hot and cold water lines hooked up to metal angle valves. Cheap Cheap Cheap. All to save the builder money. I live in an older home with solid copper hot and cold supply lines hooked up into the angle valves. The problem with cheap plastic supply lines for the hot and cold water supply is it does not last as long as the old copper pipes. Plastic pipes can burst, and leak or leak slowly over time. When you have to replace it, the job gets rather large. You have to rip out the drywall if the pipe is in the wall, or open the concrete slab in your home if the pipe is under the slab. To fix you have to do drywall, texture, and paint for the walls. If the pipe is under the concrete slab the flooring has to be removed or ripped out, and replaced if damaged. This is where the cost can get rather expensive. My older home also has a crawl space under it, and the copper supply lines for the hot and cold water are fully accessible under there. Nothing is buried.

I noticed they didn't show inside those wall/ceiling cut outs. Unfortunately if there was rot inside and he's describing it as "drip drip drip" he's going to hurt his case. The big burst may have been what flooded the room, but if it was leaking inside the wall for weeks or more, that's probably why they denied it. There are some endorsements now which do provide coverage rot and hidden leakage damage.

Better hope it's not an older home that requires expensive espestice handling.

Need to get a licensed public adjuster. The adjuster works for the customer then argues the claim to the insurance company. The public adjuster gets a percentage of the claim, it used to be around 5% maybe 10%. But they will work to get you enough money to get your house fixed and get their commission. I had to use an adjuster once. Roof damage from a storm, Citizens is all we have here in Florida. Their adjuster said "yes sir we will pay to have this section of the roof (flat roof) replaced. Estimate was about $3500. I get a check in the mail for $300. Public adjuster got me $4000 of which they took their %. I ended up with enough to properly fix the roof.

I had a water damage claim filed with Nationwide, and they denied it, on the same basis. What the insurance companies don't realize is if they continue, there will be no reason for people to continue to pay for insurance. They'll put themselves out of business.

My father-in-law has had the same USAA homeowners insurance for 22 years and they denied him a re-piping claim insurance companies these days don’t have to pay out because they are not held to any standards. Not only that, but after he notified them that he needed a re-piping they proceeded to drop him from the insurance then once he told them he was having a company come in and re-pipe they said that they will keep him on the insurance.

Hidden leakage over time is an optional coverage. Shame on the agent for not selling the coverage.
On the other hand, if the agent suggested the coverage and the customer rejected it, the customer can only blame themselves in this situation.

we had state farm on a home, dishwasher leaked slowly in back, water went into drywall behind cabinets, travelled tens of feet, finally mold popped out. State farm denied claim saying slow leaks are uncovered had to pay out of pocket to demolish half kitchen, professionally mold remediate, & rebuild. It cost a car. In hindsight we should of got the cheapest insurance instead.

Just finished going through the same thing, thousands of dollars, we had no idea there was a slow leak until the damage was done.
Now with the new dishwasher, not only did we get one with a built-in water tray, we also added another tray under the feet plus a moisture detector. $30 is well worth it for peace of mind and will save thousands if we ever have a leak again.
