This is a needed video, where you have gone out and compared different methods for PDF annotations rather than just one way, even though you have your preferred way. Thanks.
I think in a recent Obsidian update, it again got a little bit better, now you can do right-click and it will say 'Copy as quote', which copies the text with the link in a good looking format
My problem with zotero a few days ago was, that I couldn't just draw in my pdf. I needed to draw arrows and add text to the pdf directly as annotating. Since zotero didn't deliver that I had to fully ditch it sadly.
The plugins are the biggest strength and the biggest weakness of Obsidian. Once their developer gets tired of updating them, they soon become useless after a few Obsidian releases. So I'm trying to rely on as few plugins as possible.
Nice, necessary overview! It's a pity Obsidian-annotator is no longer maintained as I think it has a great base for new improvements. I'm currently working on a program to better universally sync annotations across different apps like Zotero and Koreader, and I plan to do so with zotero to for (hopefully) more seamless syncing of annotations that the current Zotero integration plugin provides.
Why when i export pdf it doesn’t show the outline. Please help me i would like to see the outline of my exported pdf just as i see it in obsidian (macbook pro user here)
The outline in Obsidian is showing the headings. If you export to PDF it turns the MD file into a PDF. That has nothing to do with the outline. If you want a table of contents in the PDF export you would need to add that in the MD file before you export to PDF.
i like the new pdf viewer. that said i don't use annotations and highlighting. i just directly copy it out into a literature about the pdf with headers for each section or directly into the subject note the pdf is talking about. sure it seems to be slower than just highlighting but i find the additional work of exporting and then sorting/using the highlights more work than just to directly put it where it can sit until i edit it. that said i don't really work with pdfs yet and it is likely a process that will change in the future when i have more than a few pdfs. i still would love a video about how to actually find good technical pdfs about a subject that are still understandable without 5 years of university knowledge. sure the bing ai is a big help but i often find that i don't know if what i found is what i need or not. the problems of wanting to learn new subjects without having to pay for 50-100€ books that need a teacher to understand...
Then your fist stop should be Google Scholar. It carries citations for books, and a shed load of citations for papers, many with free pdf copies. As a lot of students use Zotero with Obsidian to managing their referencing needs, there are a lot of work flows of this type that have been stress tested by users, and being able to manage BibTeX looks like the best way to go. I've used Zotero years ago, and it's the best referencing app out there that you don't have to pay for, and now Zotero for Android is in its public alpha testing phase, I'm rubbing my hands to be able to use Zotero across all my devices again. I only stopped because I ran out of storage space. Now, I can sync both obsidian and BibTeX files to the cloud, integrating Zotero and Obsidian, which I love almost as much as I did Zotero, to manage referencing, organisation, and information capture on Android efficiently with Android.
This is really cool if you want to stay in Obsidian for everything, but to be honest I think Readwise Reader just does a much better job of all of this.
I am curious how? Zotero clips, highlights, imports, tags, and checks for duplicates. Also has RSS and grouped libraries for free. I thought readwise cost, and didnt add much 🤷♂️
Read wise doesn't add the functionality of Zotero, nor the ability to reference and store files other than written sources. With zotero you can reference almost any information source, including audio-visual sources and store it too. Readwise can't do that. And once Zotero is finally released on Android, it might make read wise defunct IMO.

Thanks, Danny. It's great adding a simple workflow to Obsidian for those with basic needs. Managing Zotero integration isn't for the faint of heart.

you teach very well. I follow your video finally finish, you are so amazing🎉😘

They are open source someone else could update them
@@UnknownGuest220 that's not a given.

i've noticed, i dont really need zotero, you can just cite as good with obsidian, plus you remove one other tool
Curious if you tried using excalidraw for PDF annotations and what you thought? Or was that not worth comparing?
I didn't try excalidraw as I am not familiar with the plugin.
I find the slight lag in response irritating 🤷♂

@@DannyHatcherTech how?
@@DannyHatcherTech how do i do that?
When I enter 3 dashes and press the enter key, a divider is displayed. what to do?
That is part of markdown.
I am not sure what you are trying to do...

thank you sm i was so lost
what is the browser used to edit PDF?
That is just MS edge.
What I did not follow here is how Zotero updates highlights synced automatically.
Don’t you always have to “add notes from annotations”?
They don't sync automatically between Obsidian and Zotero. That requires an import. I may have mis-spoken.
when i type "---" into the page it opens a separate box that wants me to add properties. am i doing something wrong?
If that is at the top of the page that is expected. It is a divider and a file with no properties can be given them with a divider at the top.
Dear Danny, It has been a while since this video. I hope you will make a new one on how you handle PDFs in 2024.
I use the Zotero Integration plugin. My Highlights are done in Zotero them imported to Obsidian to work with.
Does Zotero include annotations made in other pdf readers?
Yes but the highlights are deemed as 'locked' so can't be editied in Zotero.
This is really cool if you want to stay in Obsidian for everything, but to be honest I think Readwise Reader just does a much better job of all of this.

I am not sure why you mean "miss" Happy to talk in discord 😁
