Winston-Salem, NC: Hidden Gems! (North Carolina, USA Vlog 2022)

  • Winston-Salem is North Carolina's 5th largest city, and it has a lot going on. Lauren was born in Winston-Salem and actually, for both of us growing up, 'Winston' was the closest 'big' city. We did our shoe shopping, electronics shopping, visited for the local dog parks, etc in the city. (Funny enough, despite both being from the Piedmont region of NC, we actually met in Virginia...but that's another story.)
In this video, we focus mostly on the hidden gems in the city of Winston-Salem, as well as cover some of the history in the city. Overall, it's a cool and underrated place that's well worth a visit. The city really blew up due to the tobacco industry but now that tobacco use isn't really 'cool' anymore, the city's economy is diversifying. The population is diversifying as well and it's really nice to see the city's art scene and culture grow as time goes on.
Winston is located in the Piedmont Triad region of NC and that's a pretty cool location. It's pretty easy to access the mountains from the city and it's only about 3.5-4 hours driving from the Atlantic Ocean. It's also conveniently close to the cities of Greensboro and High Point, about 30 minutes away, or less. It's around an hour to the larger cities of Charlotte and Durham.
Additional facts that didn't make the final cut of the video: Winston-Salem used to be the largest city in the state decades ago and was known for having one of the most beautiful airport terminal's in the country, at the Smith-Reynolds Airport. It has stained glass windows and memorabilia about some of its famous passengers, including Joseph Stalin, Ava Gardner (NC native by the way), Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and supposedly Frank Sinatra.
In the 1960's, the airport was the busiest in the state. Since the decline of tobacco, it's not even an international airport anymore and is mostly used for private and corporate use these days. For an international airport these days, you need to travel to nearby Greensboro, Charlotte, or Raleigh / Durham.
Additional fun fact, Texas Pete hot sauce originated in Winston-Salem.
*When talking about Winston’s universities, I accidentally edited out the part where I talked about Winston-Salem State University. I got in too much of a hurry at the end editing, and was trying to shorten the overall length of the video. As you can see by the many comments calling this out, it’s a very prominent HBCU in NC and needed a mention in the video.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Have you been to Winston-Salem? What are some things you like about it? If you have any additional hidden gems worth mentioning, we'd love to hear about them!

At 11;23 mark or so, you show the clock tower in old happy hill gardens. I built that clock tower with the company I worked for in about 2006 or so! I can't believe you showed it. Happy Hill gardens used to very run down and rough. I lay bricks. The side you showed is the side I built. Me and 1 other guy built that clock tower. We worked for Fletcher Brothers concrete and masonry. All of that brick work on that corner there we did!

Oh yea, a U.S. vlog! We are hoping to make it to North Carolina this year! Will have to reach out to you guys when we do go. Hidden Gem vlogs are always so fun. That waterfall is pretty cool. There is so many cool things where ever you are, just need to take the time to look and enjoy. I have never gone to a drive thru food truck before.- impressive. I wonder if it is the world's largest Kettle. The 🍆 building 😂 I love all the roadside attraction. So sad with all that vandalism and that historical black area not being kept up. I didn't know Wake Forest was there. Thanks for taking us around by where you guys use to live.

There are so many places there for the whole family to enjoy 😄 I don't know if it's the world's largest kettle but it's said to be able to hold over 11,000 brews of coffee! So wild lol. And about Wake Forest, it's kind of confusing because there is a city in NC called Wake Forest but that's not where the University is at haha 😂

That spot you showed at Happy Hill gardens used to be rough, crack and drug area. It was the projects. All black area of town. When we built the clock tower the city was in the process of tearing down the old projects and building new ones. It looks a lot better now but it's still a heavy drug area. I moved out of Winston to Kentucky in 2012, I grew up in Winston, went to Reynolds high school.
