    A Hockey Player, Speed skating in full gear, against a 3 time Olympic Gold medalist, and winning.
    This is why HOCKEY is the GREATEST! sport in the world.

    Take it easy on the "DO 5 LAPS AND THEN SEE WHO WINS" comments, this was just a fun drill to demonstrate acceleration. Obviously the speed skater has a faster top speed… I for one, had no idea about the comparison between the acceleration of speed skaters vs hockey players. I would have put my money on the speed skater (if it weren't a commercial for ccm lol)

    • @fashpart
      @fashpart 9 років тому +5

      The fact that a hockey player is in full equipment with limited range of motion and has a stick is my reasoning why I would guess the speed skater. And considering how MacKinnon is one of the fastest players in the league and how close the race actually was, it isn't that obvious of a decision.

    • @SinisterSloth
      @SinisterSloth 9 років тому

      Accelerating from stop on skates is more like running than skating. I don't think it has much to do with the skates. Sure, the hockey skates have a groove and a rocker which might help , and you don't have to worry about clicking your heels as much, but I think you could do this test with both competitors in sneakers on turf with a similar result.

    • @joshhansen1425
      @joshhansen1425 9 років тому

      Exactly. A 5 lap race has nothing to do with acceleration, that's endurance. This short sprint is perfect to measure acceleration. This page is full of people who obviously failed physics because they don't understand what acceleration is...

      lol train mckinnon for like 1 month in speed skating and he's better than the gold medalist I bet...... speed skating is so niche you have the best skaters in the world playing hockey, not speed skating. Despite it not being a full race he's also in hockey skates, equipment, and holding a hockey stick. What a joke speed skating is LOL

    Aren't speed skates built for speed not accelleration? Having a blade 3-4" longer is gonna make them harder to get giong off the line.

    Pretty impressive. I think we all know who wins a race between them if they go a few laps. Equipment or no equipment. Speed skater wins by a MILE (ask Al Iafrate).That's not what they are demonstrating here though. Just acceleration. Maybe Nathan should take up speed skating? ;)

    • @epuration

      no, it is much harder to do a fast start in speed skates, however the top speed you can get to is not even in the same league.

    • @justinsane3909
      @justinsane3909 9 років тому +2

      epuration1000 So in other words, ANY hockey skates would have given MacKinnon the advantage in this test, making the ad a crock of course, lol.

      ***** honestly, the skates would make little diffrence as long as they are fit and sharp.

    • @basilmcdonnell9807
      @basilmcdonnell9807 9 років тому

      epuration1000 Skates make a huge difference. The latest skates have cut the total weight on the foot by about 40%. The blades are sharper (and stay sharp many times longer) than the old skates. And the support pattern of the skate is (finally) in the right places: if you watch MacKinnon, you see there's a very particular flex on his ankle to get the blade of the skate at the right angle to the ice. The skate has to allow this while at the same time being very stiff so the push isn't lost.
      Putting on these new skates after skating with the older ones is like running in track shoes after trying to run in wooden shoes. Have a look at some video of stars from the 70's to see what bad skates do: even the best skaters then look clumsy and awkward compared to everyone today.
      Now if only they'd get rid of the stupid swish styling.

  • @justinsane3909
    @justinsane3909 9 років тому +13

    Wait, wouldn't logic suggest we use one skater using two models of skates instead of two skaters using drastically different skates? This just screams BS on the part of the company. Next will be skates that tighten your ass when you skate right?

    Excuse terminology if incorrect- but Nathan's "foot- turnover rate" or "stride rate" is just scorching. How Charles does it in long blades is amazing too. I also think it''s just as important as the checking gets tighter at playoffs that a skate helps a player remain stable while being checked or grinding...which is what I miss a bit about the ankle support of the older skates. How many Stanley Cup W teams wore Tacks between 1940 and 1980? ....like....all of them? Thx.

    • @joeschmoe6492
      @joeschmoe6492 9 років тому

      You guys are ignorant for thinking that it's impossible for a top skater in the NHL to be able to compete with a top speed skater, and win. It's a more than valid opinion which is why you don't have any real arguments to back up what you say and all you can do is call me ignorant and cry.
      As if learning new skating techniques for a professional skater (NHL player) would be difficult. As if he isn't already dealing with the best talent in existence since his sport isn't as focused on skating yet he's the fastest in the league. I can explain my argument, can you, "grown ups?" Don't even get me started on the equipment he's wearing that limits muscle and joint movement, a stick that throws off your balance, and the weight of all that. Let's even ignore that (*!@# cause you still have nothing. Go ahead and name off all the techniques in speed skating and what he'd have to go through. I guarantee he picks them up in a couple weeks and competes with your dude who trained his whole life.

    At 0:37 "I have 50 lbs of gear on." LMAO this is such BS. I play ice hockey with full padding/contact and if he has 50 lbs of gear on maybe he should consider upgrading out of the Stone Age. And for those who don't think I know what I'm talking about just go online right now to any site, add up the weight for the all the equipment and it's NOWHERE near 50 lbs. If it is, you're doing it wrong.

    Back in 1988 when I was 13, and watching the Winter Olympics every night, I told my friends at the local rink that I'd like to see a straight-line race between the top figure skater, speed skater, and hockey player. We all agreed that the figure skater would come in last, but I was the only one who insisted that the hockey player would win. Everyone else thought it was a given that the speed skater would win. Now that I've seen this video, I'd like to go back to the rink to gloat but none of them would be there to hear me.

      TheModerNizer I think it's funny that you ignore their skating ability. You go straight to the type of skates because the gold medalist is losing to an NHL player. I guarantee there are at least 5-10 NHL players who would beat the gold medalist of short track speed skating in the right equipment and with about a month of training. This makes speed skating look like a joke, because it is.
