Problem is that people always appreciate more good offence because they think it's harder to learn than defence. In NHL level that isn't the case.

Dude is a legendary fourth liner in my book. Didn't know much about him when he first started with Detroit but his quick accurate shot quickly made me remember his name. He also gave up the 88 to Patrick Kane when he rolled into town. A real class act.

This is fantastic analysis. What's most frustrating (although, in a way, gives Sprong potential) is that it's barely even a question of exerting "more effort" with him. He just has to stop shutting his brain off in the defensive zone. It really makes you wonder how he hasn't been able to address these problems already -- is it stubbornness or a mental block?

Thanks for this, as a Detroit fan I keep asking, why doesn’t Sprong play more! He hustles (consistently gives himself breakaways because of strong speed, and forces a lot of turnovers on the forecheck. Hadn’t watched him closely in the d zone but now it makes more sense why he doesn’t play much, I think if he keeps hustling as he has, he will improve!

@@Woody10719 Exactly. You don't need good decision making for offence. Either shoot, pass or look for position. But for defence you are playing formation as a team. You can't just think of the puck. Offence is very straightforward. Score get rewarded. But there is no reward for defence. The only driving motivator for learning defence is the will to win. It's crazy people just assume these things happen magically. It only happens if the player has the will for it.

Awesome breakdown… thanks for giving us an idea of what to expect. Sure sounds a lot like Kuzmenko… doesn’t seem like a Tocc guy at all. Should be interesting if Sprong takes this opportunity to improve his defensive game and open up other opportunities as he is still quite young overall. By the looks of it he seems to be more of a centerman. These defensive highlights wouldn’t look so bad if he was not the winger… he naturally drifts low in front of his own net. The board work and d-zone coverage for wingers is definitely a specific skill set. Anyway… hope he has a positive experience in Vancouver.

Excellent analysis. As a European follower of NHL hockey and a countryman of Sprong, I myself often wonder why he doesn't get that many top/middle 6 minutes, especially when looking at his points gathering prowess. I thought it mostly had to do with his attitude (has been mentioned in the past), but your explanation about his defensive game rings true.

Great video. After reading the title and early in the video I was wondering why he wasn't betting more ice time but lack of effort is inexcusable at any level. I don't blame him for decision making, imo that's more something that comes with experience, playing time and chemistry, etc. but you can't give less than 100%. Some of the clips of lackadaisical play in here would've had me irate as a coach. The best part though is that it's easily fixable if the proper attitude is in place. If Sprong is aware of the info in this video, that should be inspiration enough to improve in the defensive aspect of the game.

Can't fix desire or intensity. We've some of the best two way forwards in red and white. He has a lot to live up to in that shirt. I hope he is actively working on theses.

Unsurprising seeing as hes on his 5th team already at 26 years old and when you consider his scouting reports have read like this since before he was in the league "While Sprong has shown he is probably one of the biggest offensive threats in this years draft, arrogance and self-importance have brought up as some questionable personality traits for this youngster"
Also this Per The Athletic: "His teammates weren’t particularly enamored with his personality after Sprong was drafted in the second round in 2015. In fact, he was forced to take an Uber from his Pittsburgh hotel to training camp in Cranberry Township on a daily basis in 2015 because some of his veteran teammates didn’t take kindly to him."
Seems like he could be a really good player with a little more maturity and discipline in the defensive zone.

As a dutch hockey fan, I have followed Sprong's career closely. It usually boils down to this:
Your team scores more with Sprong on the ice...but your opponent scores EVEN more with him there.
Still hope he joins a dutch squad at the end of his career though. He would light the league on fire and it would be great for the sport here

This is a awesome breakdown and I completely agree. It’s almost like it’s the video game and your player is a 95 offense 70 defense maybe 65 lol. I’m still taking that dude for sure

So basically Daniel Sprong is me in beer league. Great shot, but doesn't exactly try too hard if he doesn't have the puck. New favorite player lol. Good breakdown.

Detroit fan. Ive loved him ever since he came to the wings. I knew he was gonna be legit when he had 4G in 4 preseason games. He’s shot/release is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I hope DET signs him for 3-4years

    Great breakdown.
Would be idea if mentioned if the points/60 is normalized for even strength.
If straight up points/60 is used, it heavily skews in favor of players with high PP time. Massive disadvantage to big PK players.
Overall, amazing analysis. That's a problem he's had his entire career.

    Ding Dong, it’s Daniel Sprong!
Of all the off season moves Seattle made, losing Sprong was the greatest question mark and probably one of the reasons for the Kraken’s diminished offensive production. But now I see what Hakstol and Francis might have seen. Kraken last year combatted their subpar defense by being the leader in 5on5 goals.

Coming from a die hard wings fan, if Spronger could work on his defensive capabilities, he would EASILY be a top 6 guy for literally any team in this league. His shot is wicked and hes got good IQ. Dont forget he does get actually a very decent amount of time on the PP and will be getting more with Larkin out for about 2 weeks.

I don’t understand when forwards are lazy on defense. Guess I’ve always played D, and that tends to be my priority, but it just never makes sense to me to not fight for a puck
