I have less experience with dogs because of my age, but I've had them for the last 20 years or so. They've gotten me through some awful times, always loving. I can't imagine living without a dog now. I have one my nephew found in the streets and she's easily the gentlest dog ever. What a love.

Jocko covers all but the one aspect that most dog owners don't want to talk about. A healthy dog will only live 12-15 years, some less. You have to know that, at some point in time, you're going to have to say goodbye to the most loyal, understanding friend you'll ever have. I still get choked up, it's hard.

Jocko's point about old dogs is so accurate. We have a 20 year old little dog who is deaf and blind but still full of joy. He's not in pain, so we are not putting him down. HOwever, we do have to keep things predictable for him, so we can't travel together anymore. Someone familiar has to stay with him. We can't move furniture so that he doesn't get confused. I know these things may be a pain in the ass for some people, but for us, they are what we do for a good friend. Sambo has been a magnificent snake-killing doggie doorbell, perp repellent, and we love him, and do the right thing by him, to the end.

Hard to believe but I had a dream of my current dog before we got him. I’m the dream he was full grown and had a smile on his face.
Not long after we decided to get a dog at the time (I was 14) and I became his primary care taker and trainer. I was severely depressed at the time from deaths in the family and he helped me so much in the love he gave, and with the emotional restraint I needed to force myself to have when he wouldn’t listen and I was an angry teenager.
My boy is 8 years old now and I have him and my niece to thank for pulling me out of that bad place.

As a dog owner of 15 years, my biggest suggestion for aspiring dog owners is to get a dog that match your energy. Dog type is a good indicator, but so is the purpose of the lineage, like some are bred for competition. Look at energy of the dog's mom and dad. If you're bred for the sofa, but the dog was bred for pulling sleds (husky) or lineage for competitions, then that will likely end with despair because you can't maintain it. If the guy is not into training his dog (nearly) every day, I would not get a lineage bred for competition.

It’s a complete commitment to get a dog. I pretty much put my social life on hold when I had my dog. When my friends were traveling, I chose to stay with my dog. My weekends were planned around my dog.
I got my dog at 7 weeks old and in the first 3 months, I got very little sleep. Then fast forward to near the end of his life, it was the same thing 12 years later. Had to constantly get up throughout the night to take him out to the backyard.
Then there is the cost. The food, treats, accessories and vet bills. It call can add up. Even with all that, every moment I spent with my dog was well worth it.

I did this from 19 to 29. I understand that sacrifice. And the day my dog died was horrible. I stayed with him every minute of that last night, even moved a matress next to his bed so I could keep a close eye on him. He had pneumonia and was struggling to breathe. I had taken him to the vets that evening and an emergency vet came 2 hours before he died. Nobody expected him to die that night, so nobody suggested euthanasia. He got up out of bed to puke at around 3am. He puked blood and collapsed into my arms. I did CPR on him even blew into his snout covered in blood and vomit. Nothing could be done. He was dead. His body got cold. I took his body out to the garden, dug a deep hole at 4am and buried him, all wrapped up in a blanket. Then I went to bed in a lonely bedroom, crying. That was a very hard night, and a couple of months of hell followed where I pretty much just cried, tended to his grave, carved him a cross, and kept myself alive. But it was worth it because it gave my life purpose and it made me more mature. I now understand loss and I know what really matters in life is love. All the money in the world, even my own health, meant nothing when I was trying to revive my dog. I got a new dog 4 months later and I plan to be with her right till the bitter end. Until then, we make good memories. I can't think of anything that builds more character in a person than them getting a dog, loving the dog, caring for the dog, and then losing that dog in their hands and burying the dog themselves. I value those lessons more than any degree or career I could have had.

Take your time, visit the dog multiple times. Develop a connection before you take them home. And then dedicate yourself to continuing to learn and care for your dog.

I miss my German Shepherd 🐺 so much. She was my dream dog and my first dog ever that I couldn't have growing up because my parents always rented. Shortly after we bought a home, I got her and trained her with a trainer for some time and then continued what I learned using positive reinforcement, and she grew up to be well-rounded and loved by many. She got along with my cats and my children and hens and respected deer and even turtles and frogs. She just had a love for life. Sadly, quickly and unexpectedly, I lost her in September while I was dealing with my own injury, and it was the hardest time of my life losing her and a cat so close together. 💔 my concussion and issues with my c1 c2 under the brain stem and spine the neurological symptoms at the time made my emotional time even more difficult to process. I lost my 10 year old dog in 2020. Hurt like a piece of my own soul had died. 4 months later I adopted another dog. And I cried multiple times a day for at least 2 months after my previous dog died.
Adopting a new dog helped me immensely. just keeping the routines and the responsibilities (it feels weird not having to keep tabs on your dog's location, if he has peed, eaten, etc), plus their company. At first it was hard because she would remind me of him and I would compare her to him. But after a month I was attached to her and now I love her just as much as I loved my previous dog, which I never thought would ever happen. The way I saw it, my previous dog would want the pack to go on ASAP and a dog in need was at the shelter who would really appreciate moving in with me even if I am a bit distant at first. It was the right choice. I still grieve my previous dog. I imagine him as part of the pack still, up in heaven pulling strings for us.

I lost one 13 months ago and it still hurt a lot. I just got another one, 2 weeks ago now, and honestly it really does alleviate the pain. That is obviously not the reason to get another dog, but just know that if you do have a gap in your life and fill it with a dog again, it does help with the sense of loss the other dog left you with. I think in a way the next dog occupies a lot of the same space in our brains/hearts/minds.

We had a dog when I was a kid, and my parents kept telling us that us kids weren't taking care of her enough. I was at a private school at that time, only at home on weekends. After the last day of school before summer, my parents picked me up and told me on the way back that they euthanized our dog because we kids weren't taking good care of them. She was 4 years old only. I discovered a couple of weeks later than my dad was heavily cheating on my mom and our family was dissolving either way and the dog was not the problem, our dysfunctional family was. To protect themselves, our parents kept blaming us for her death as adult so we never had animals until our late 30's when we realized things. Was sure a great way to destroy a kid self-confidence and create trauma. You cannot teach others lessons that you don't apply to yourself.

When the dog is a puppy, take it out front with you every day without a leash. As it gets older It will know its boundaries, and it WILL NOT RUN AWAY at the opportunity when the front door or gate is left open.
Also, its a joy when you take your dog to the river, or on a trail. I've always had a Guardian Breed (American Bulldogs, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino) and I've always felt protected. And they are also friendly to those I am friendly with. So I always stay calm when close to strangers.

Jocko … You are spot on! I’ve had many dogs throughout my life, have trained ski patrol avalanche rescue dogs during my ski patrol days, security dogs while in law enforcement, and just plain ole’ house dogs for friends and family. I LOVE DOGS! I consider them a part of my family, unconditionally. I had an Akita for almost 14 years who passed away from cancer, and I cried like a little girl! It broke my heart to put that dog down. Since then, I have rescued a couple Belgian Mals and retrained them so I could donate them to military prospects who needed a service dog. I contacted the VA and found a contact who places the dogs with prospective recipients. So far, I have placed one Mal with a service member in Vegas who is using his new dog for a security business he started, and the other in Colorado with a service member who needed a support dog. So far both placements have been successful! That warms my heart! BTW, both dogs were Red Zone cases prior to my adopting them. With that said, I feel that I not only saved both of the Mal’s lives, but potentially made the lives of the service members happy and successful. Just thought I’d share, Brotha. God Bless America! 😎🇺🇸

I had 3 pet dogs and 2 cats growing up. My first two dogs were outside dogs with no training and unfortunately I lost them both to parvo while I was still young. The third however was an inside dog and we spent time training her in obedience and tricks.
I was paralyzed in my later teens and my parents wanted to get me a service dog. Wait lists were long for someone to provide me one at reduced or no cost, we often didn’t meet the requirements because we had another dog in the house already, and we couldn’t afford the cost to get one specially trained through a service either. We ended up finding a local breeder/trainer team who bred Czech GSD’s, and the trainer also trained dogs for a couple different PD’s, and were open to working with us and it would end up being significantly cheaper. I met the guy and they had two pups that were just under a year old, but he straight up told me that he really only had one with the right temperament for service/self protection work. I took her home for a month to get to know each other, and I knew within the first hour of having her by my side that she was the one for me. She took to it so naturally despite having no obedience training at that point.
After that month he took her back for a month to teach her basic obedience, then she came back to me and we began on the service work training side. Once a week he would come to my house with his personal dog, and train me to train my dog by using his own as an example, so that we built up that bond and trust. Each week he’d come back and check our progress before moving on to the next thing to train, and each week he was surprised how quickly we were progressing. Only one thing took more than a week for her and I to learn and train and we were done with everything in 3.5 months, start to finish. I say finish, but I mean to the point where her and I were able to go out on our own without me being nervous about her doing something unexpected.
After that we began the self protection training which took another few months, but that wasn’t her main purpose anyways, it was just an extra thing to teach her, because I had the opportunity and it was free, so why not? She’s never let me down despite everything we’ve been through, and we’ve continued training over the past 9 years. She’ll be 11 this year and she’s as great as ever, despite getting up there in age, and a few years ago I bred her and got a couple puppies out of it, to train as her eventual replacement. I honestly dread the day when she’s no longer by my side, and I’m getting choked up and teary eye’d now just typing this and thinking about it. She’s the greatest dog I’ve ever owned, and she didn’t cost me fortune.
She cost $1k as a puppy but someone close to me decided to cover that cost for my family, and the training at the end came out to about $4k, but I was also trained to be a trainer through the process so I feel we got a huge bargain because I’ll never have to pay to train another dog again, it’ll just cost my time and energy.
I’ll never have another untrained dog. The difference between a pet dog that just does whatever it wants and a trained dog is night and day, it’s a completely different experience and I can’t recommend it enough. You also want to get a breed and line that matches what you’re looking for, and be realistic. A belgian malinois likely isn’t gonna be great if it’s stuck in the house all day with nothing to do, and it’ll likely go downhill quite rapidly.
The best advice I can give is to do all the research you can beforehand and be realistic with what you can offer the dog as far as time and energy.

I was the villain of the family because I was so disciplined with my dog training starting when I picked it up at 8 weeks. Yea no picking up my dog, if they wanted to cuddle they need to get down to the floor to the dogs level. That first year was timing consuming that really tested patience… but since then (now 10.5 years old), she has been such an enjoyable dog. Does not need leash. She will run with me like Jocko said. She’ll never run away out in open. She comes back on command. She won’t lunge at any food dropped on floor. She’s still a dog and explores and does things she shouldn’t but on command she will stop what she’s doing and look to me. I read “how to raise the perfect dog” by cesar Milan and followed that to a T. And a bunch of his and other UA-cam videos. It’s definitely work. But if willing, and a animal person it’s worth it. I feel bad when I see family or friends and strangers dogs just being wild uncontrolled animals. People don’t realize how much of a liability it can be when it’s like that

Spot on Jocko!! So many people are ill prepared for dog ownership and the true commitment necessary to care for a dog. The worse thing you can do for a dog and an owner is neglect.

I have 3 dogs and it's been the best decisions I've ever made. The security you get as well as the loyalty and love is worth every hassle. Obviously everyone will draw the line on how many dogs they want, but 3 is the magic number that works for me! I will always love my three Pomeranians!

I picked my dog up by chance. She was in a crate, at the flea market, and something about her just screamed "you can't leave me here" when I locked eyes with her. She's been the best friend I've ever had.
When she first came home, under the pretext that she was a Lab Pyrenees mix, she was great for about two months... and then the defiance started. And the chewing. And she got into EVERYTHING. She was definitely work... in my younger years, I raised German Shepherds. Very intelligent, working dogs. She was easily three times the work of a Shepherd. As she aged, she looked lab-ish, and NOTHING like a Pyrenees.
A genetic test later, and I find out she has a fairly high percentage wolf, and lab.
She's three this year, and she has definitely been a learning experience for me. She's also been very... expensive. Much less defiant now, still somewhat destructive and too smart for her own good. She can open door knobs, unlatch leash and runner clips, slip out of every single collar I've put her in, including choker chains as a last resort... she's gotten on every single last nerve I've had at times... but she's loyal, attentive, always happy to see me, vigilant, protective and fun.
I didn't want a wolf hybrid, or a dog that day really... but apparently one wanted me. There's not enough money or shiny things on this planet to get me to part with my Daisy, but she has not been an easy dog to raise.
Just understand that they see you as a member of their pack, and they will test you as such... but they will also treat you as such. There is no other animal to rival the companionship gifted by a dog, and their love is unconditional... even when they're being assholes.

I've had a wolf and helped raise my son's lab. This sure isn't an ideal mix.
My experience with the wolf was: crazy smart, unshakeabley loyal and having cat qualities. She jumped through closed windows twice to try and follow us.
The lab: very expensive destruction for two years, no crate would hold him ( bad history), now stellar in obedience. Nearly human.

I rescued a pit bull/shar pei mix off the streets of Detroit 10yrs ago. He was a starving 4mo old pup. Found him near death freezing in Michigan weather. Was April 8th 2013. The wife and I love him as much as a human can love an animal. Best dog ever and he never leaves my side. I spend most of my free time with him and he has made my life a joy!!

I was raised with dogs my whole life. At 1 point up to 4 dogs in my teens. A puppy is like a child but it’s unconditional love that will teach ur kids humanity & responsibility & empathy.

So true that discipline equals freedom. Germany has some of the best trained dogs in the world and I raised my puppy in Germany with a trainer. Germans demand a lot from dogs, but at the same time (polite) dogs are trusted and welcomed anywhere, even off leash.
It was a lot of work to get him that well mannered. But then we fostered an untrained dog and realized how much more supervision a dog could need!

The key with dogs is routine.. the LOVE routine. They will know and prepare for each step of the daily routine and enjoy every second. My two used were rescues and would bark and destroy the house. Some good discipline and structure they are now perfect dogs. I cant imagine life without them.

We rescued a Basenji mix, and he's definitely a good dog to start off with. IIRC, they're not known to bark very much. He's been great with potty training, and great with the kids. I'm glad you're talking about the work/commitment side of it though, because as a military family, we didn't account for the added hassle of traveling with the dog, or finding people to watch him when we leave town.

Getting a dog is planning for a pure heartbreak in 10-15 years. Having to put my German Shepard down was way way harder than I expected.
But it was a great and lovely journey along those years.

Been rescuing problem dogs for 30 years and this is spot on,, just like a problem kid (ME) they take a bit more effort across the board. worth every bit of it when you see the dog change and learn to "dog".

I had a Dalmatian, Vincent, who is absolutely incredible. A beautiful, big soul who was with me everywhere, even while coaching people. He healed everyone. When he passed, something in me left with him. Now, I have a rescue cocker spaniel, who sneakily married Vincent's sister, and they had a little Dalmatian looking puppy who looks just like Vincent, except he won't grow as big. I guess I went into a rant to talk about Vincent, his beautiful legacy, and family.
