I've never had a problem with people deaging the actors as long as it's convincing I'm all right with it. Like Will Smith In Gemini man they essentially took me back to the fresh Prince of Bel-Air with that one if he was into more dramatic roles at the time. But if it looks weird then no thank you. And to your point about just adding random actors to younger roles, the first thing that comes up is Spider-Man. A lot of people had problems with Tobey Maguire and trying to believe he's a high schooler turned superhero. Of course people love him now because he's such a iconic version of Spidey but people still critique it still to this day

After that awesome deep fake with Tom Holland, I would cast him as Marty Jr and be the films main protagonist. We can have Fox as he is in the present and when Holland goes to the past and meets his father, he can play as Fox's body double (or someone of similar hieght and build) and a de aged cgi face can be superimposed with Fox dubbing his lines. It's tricky but with today's technology they could probably pull it off.

The only thing I want to point out is that PEN15 was created by Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine (the two main actors) and is based on their real-life middle school experiences. I am pretty sure it was an intentional creative choice for them to play themselves, especially since it's a comedy.

I wasn't sure if you mentioned PEN15 ironically. I've always felt like the actors were intentionally OBVIOUSLY too old; AND I thought it also allowed them to do TOTALLY inappropriate, yet completely accurate scenes from my painful tween/early teen years that an ACTUAL teen couldn't do.
My gripe is that they do this on actors we've seen for a long time. Like they tried to de-age Will Smith and RDJ to how they looked in the 90s. Dude we can watch Fresh Prince or Soapdish or Back to School and see what you looked like. And Sam Jackson? You've hardly changed since the first Coming to America, you think a few less wrinkles and a wig it going to make us forget.

I wasn't sure if you mentioned PEN15 ironically. I've always felt like the actors were intentionally OBVIOUSLY too old; AND I thought it also allowed them to do TOTALLY inappropriate, yet completely accurate scenes from my painful tween/early teen years that an ACTUAL teen couldn't do.

My gripe is that they do this on actors we've seen for a long time. Like they tried to de-age Will Smith and RDJ to how they looked in the 90s. Dude we can watch Fresh Prince or Soapdish or Back to School and see what you looked like. And Sam Jackson? You've hardly changed since the first Coming to America, you think a few less wrinkles and a wig it going to make us forget.
