In the uk, we have the nhs which is free because of people paying national insurance and other taxes. We also have private healthcare and on-call doctors which are expensive but, for people who pay regularly, they can get their money's worth. Granted, it is a smudge outdated but it works.
"No society can legitimately call itself civilised if a sick person is denied medical aid because of lack of means" If I remember correctly, it was a quote by a British Labor MP responsible for the creation of the NHS.
Why? It's that person's own fault. He or she should've worked harder to make more money. Then they could've paid for it. Success is a mindset and anyone can be successful with that right mindset. Why should I, as a healthy and successful person, pay for a lazy sickly person? That's just wrong and to me it sounds an awful lot like communism.

it sounds like socialism to them, or communism. But in that case the state would just pay for it. This, like you say, is sort of the capitalistic way to reach a similar goal: paying for healthcare, through (mandatory) insurance. Communism does it through nationalisation, socialism through some kind of tax, also through government. The last would not have to be equal healthcare for everyone, but everyone should have basic access to it. They want less government and more for themselves... They don't consider themselves to be part of society, they are part of a group who opposes everything government related. Smells of communism... (it is your own government who has fed that beast - mccarthyism)
US citizens are so independent they don't want to help the people who struggle to be independent because that threatens their independence. Dependent people have only themselves to blame for their non-indepenence...that's the impression I'm getting from all of these anti-healthcare insurance arguments...eugh.
This is something that a lot of people don't realise, INSURANCE IS SOCIALISM! Everyone in the pool pays for those who need help; welcome to Socialism (government, community, employer, private it doesn't matter). So next the GOP will want to do away with car insurance? Let's see how that goes down...
The bottom line on American Healthcare. The USA is the only nation where Breaking Bad makes sense because Walter White would just have got the treatment in France, Canada, Australia, UK, Germany.....
I live in a european country where we have healthcare (still quite expensive, but affordable for everyone). We pay a fixed amount each year. A dude from my work was complaining: I'm never sick, or in the hospital, yet I have to pay... I told him that this is the one lottery no one wants to win. No one knows what genetic defects they have (at least not all of them), or what illness, or accident might come. We had a dude there too, who suffered from some kind of heart disease and he needed a few days of surgery + recovery. It would have cost him €275.000,-. I told the guy that was complaining: would you rather switch with that heart disease riddled guy and have your moneys worth? Or get a some kind of crap happen to you, unable to afford the cure? There is of course a limit: I think some old people should just die, keeping people alive at all costs is not affordable in the long end - you can't expect society to pay a million for a few months of slow paced life. But 275.000 for that guy at my work - he was 38 - is far more reasonable. He get's another 30 or so years for it.
Your viewpoint is shared by many rational people. But there are some famous criticisms of taking utilitarian view of ethics, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilitarianism#Criticisms
cor boet If you live or die should not be down to how much it costs. Most "old people" paid taxes and insurances all their lives so deserved the money thats spent to care for them and help them LIVE!
In the interests of a social experiment, I would introduce a law where people who don't want to contribute to publicly funded healthcare can have scope to opt out. But once you opt out, you are not allowed to have a change of heart and opt back in. It should be irreversible. I would be interested to know how many people would seriously consider using this opt out.

Yes Healthy people pay for the sick and the rich should pay a lot more, not get loopholes to dodge paying their share, it's like the insurance on you car, you pay for it if you ever need to use it, and things can happen with you your say so, so it's there for you, and this way with everyone paying their share, like if the rich was paying there fair share, Health care would be affordable for everyone, but for the rich, that would be too simple for them to understand, you can't fix stupid or the simple ones, and trumps number one in that list.
The irony here is if you tell people in Europe the healthy should pay for the sick , the reply is "yes, that makes sense to me" I know because I live here.

At least make it free for kids since they have no say over their parents financial situation and almost everyone will do anything to save their kid so lets not punish them financially for it.

"You spoiled vanilla milkshake!"
An apt description of Paul Ryan I feel.
In the UK we pay £2892 per capita per annum, USA pays £7617. Life expectancy in the UK is TWO years longer. I feel bad for them.
