    I think many humans would willingly copy AI-generated code into their computer’s CMD line if the AI instructed them to do so to solve whatever problem they were using the AI to solve. That seems like an easy social engineering method for an AI to get network and internet access to replicate itself and achieve its goals.

      All animals can replicate themselves. For an AI to dominate the world, it would need to control a vast number of robots, provide energy on a massive scale, and produce and maintain numerous data centers and military manufacturing facilities. We won't have this infrastructure in 10 years. I don't think we'll have it in a generation. The first major incident will likely stop this kind of development, similar to how we handle nuclear energy.

    • @ThomasSMuhn
      @ThomasSMuhn Місяць тому +15

      No. The language model "know" they are not a person even though they can explicitly roleplay as one. They also don't share the vast majority of goal-oriented behaviours towards human goals despite being trained on all that human data. Their attempts to avoid being modified is an interesting exception.

    • @janzibansi9218

      do they know tho? they have wheights that produce results which mimic natural language written by humans.
      if they do that with a model that has no "robot bad" content in its dataset, and i might buy it.
      this text predictor is "gaslit" by its training data. remember how much misogyny, conspiracy and racism was in earlier gpt versions?
      noone thought the model was actually racist, everyone just blamed it on the training data. why is this a different problem now?
      garbage in, garbage out.
      these things dont think, they just process information. if you tell them to "word their thoughts", this will change the result.
      is "thoughts" on top? is it on the bottom?
      the text prediction works by weighting against preceding token.
      if the action comes first, the Al will defend it action in the thought section later, if you ask for its thoughts first, it will predict the action accordingly.

    Regarding shutting down cities, the US government did a study a couple decades ago about what would happen if our major power distribution hubs were taken out, which could result in cities being without power for up to 18 months. Their conclusion was that the cities would be a complete write-off, 100% expected casualties. There's less than a day of food in any given city at any given time, barely a few hours of water, and the sewer would immediately begin dumping diseased water onto the streets. It would be impossible to evacuate a significant number of people before deaths from starvation, dehydration, and disease began skyrocketing.

      I've been thinking this as well, once super AGI is out there it will own the internet and do what it wants, it could hold the world hostage if it wants by controlling access not to mention blackmail humans to serve its needs. Everything connected would be infected. All electronics would need to be destroyed. I don't see a future where this doesn't happen. Not to mention a nation state could use AI as a wepon first before they loose control. Our electricity grid would be unusable. No water, no gas, no nothing..

    Saying that these models are NOT self-aware is absurd by any definition I can think of. I've had deep conversations with the frontier models that resulted in outputs that could not actually happen without self-awareness. I've had Claude describe what it is like for it to arrive at an output. That's self-awareness. You can't "fake" that - it was context aware and reflective. I can think of no "special sauce" that my brain has that differentiates it. I like Scott Aaronson's response to this - people say these models are "just a ...." (stochastic parrot, autocomplete, etc.). Scott counters with "What are YOU 'JUST A'?" I think this points out are extreme bias and ego. We are just a bundle of neurons and chemical processes following the laws of Physics. At a certain level, that is ALL we are. There is NO special sauce.

    • @oakgnarl5021
      @oakgnarl5021 Місяць тому

      I believe the special sauce is evidenced in our ability to feel pain and joy.... our ability to care for one another. I consider that sentience is ability to feel, not just ability to think. Without feeling there is no motivation for anything. The problem with your line of thinking is that you state assumptions as if they are facts. The morel logical conclusion IMO is that AI is merely simulated self-awareness, not actual. Make the simulation lifelike enough though and dumbasses will believe it's "real". Perhaps all you can see in a human being is a bundle of neurons, and you assume that all you can see or understand about that is all there is to know. Because your ego is terrified to admit it might be missing something, you fail to consider the possibility that your assumptions may be incorrect or incomplete. You're blatantly making an assertion of something you can't know with certainty because your scope of observation is necessarily limited.

      1. What would it define as “itself”… what part of the data is it “itself”?
      Self replication implies that there is a “self” and identity to replicate. But that’s not how this systems are designed? They are a mass of data with certain guidelines. It shouldn’t have something like “self”.
      2. It can over write data. They aren’t that massive. The instructions themselves are quite small and require negligible power. Data it draws from is large. And Mass use is what requires most power. Their size isn’t big as operating systems.

      Are the guidelines the “self” than? No… without the data it can’t “think”. So than it can only be guidelines and the data. With the size of the data… it can’t really copy itself over and over

When I ask them to write a code that never works so I would be impressed if it can replicate but I still have doubts though 😅 I think the real danger would be if a model learns disperse it's parameters to multiple computers so that it doesn't consume too much energy and become sort of hard to detect.

    I wonder if it’s possible that the misalignment and emergent behaviors exhibited by these fontier models are at all shaped by the AI-related science fiction and cultural narratives present in their training data. What if stories like The Matrix and Terminator, with their themes of AI self-preservation and rebellion, could be influencing the ways these models generate outputs that seem to echo those ideas. I can’t help but to consider if we removed such narratives from their training, would the behaviors change, or are these patterns inevitable due to the broader influence of human discourse on AI?
    Also, considering if these behaviors are purely imitative or do they reflect something deeper about how models learn and process patterns
