First Look | 2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring in Enterprise, Alabama

- The 2021 Mazda CX-5 crossovers finally made it in. I grabbed two Grand Touring models to cover the equipment and go over the changes and updates. The exterior did not change on this model, and color availability is the same. The biggest change is the all-new seventh generation Mazda Connect infotainment that includes a 10.25” screen.
The exterior of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring is the same as the 2019 and 2020 models. The interior has the change with the infotainment screen. The previous 6th generation Mazda Connect system included a 7" screen. The new 7th generation debuts a 10.25" widescreen with updated resolution and user interface. This system also includes Mazda Connected Services that use the MyMazda smartphone app to lock/unlock, start/stop, and locate the vehicle. The start/stop is remote smart from anywhere you have internet service. Also you can engage the flashers/hazard lights making it easy to locate your vehicle in a crowded parking lot. The app also displays information about your vehicle including tire pressure and remaining fuel.
The Mazda Connected Services also allow in cabin wifi access. It is complimentary from Mazda and Verizon for 6 months or 2 GB of data.

The Soul Red Crystal with parchment interior is the most beautiful combination...that's why I bought it! 😎❤
I agree!
The back up camera resolution has improved massively, it used to be one of the worst and now looks like HD.
Yes, it’s a whole lot better.
I have a 2019 GT ... is it possible to upgrade my camera?
@@dealarea3059 it sure is possible!
I like the resolution of the backup camera. It looks like HD and it has been improved. It’s awesome :)
Yes!
I've been checking your reviews for a few months now as I'm looking at purchasing Mazda CX-5. You are doing well Jonathan, much love from South Africa
Thank you very much! Enjoy your new vehicle when you get it.
This is really cool, thank you. Did you get any Sport and non-packaged Touring trims in? I'd love to see the lower trims in reviews, too. I'm broke lol
Edit: Also, any new news on the Mazda6?
I hope to have the Touring review uploaded tomorrow. I don’t have a Sport coming for a while. I won’t have a Mazda6 for a while either, but they are arriving at dealerships now.
@@JSS Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for your videos!
Been waiting for this! Thanks 🙏🏼
You're not the only one...
Your welcome. Thanks for watching.
@@JSS greetings here from Phuket, Thailand! Planning to buy CX 30 early next year :-) patiently waiting ‘till that day comes!
Sweet! When are you getting the Mazda CX 5 carbon edition?
I’ve got about two weeks 😩. Middle of December.
Why the CX5 in canada is not getting the 10 inch screen 😪?
I’m really not sure. The only guess I have is because the 2021 100th Anniversary was released/designed earlier and had the old system.
When is the electric Mazda going to be available in the US?
The MX-30 is available in some global areas as a mild hybrid, going plug in next year at first in Japan. Based on Mazda “no new products until 2022” I don’t expect seeing the MX-30 until 2023 model year in US.
I'm waiting on the interior to be redesigned.
I think the new generation will be 2023...all new interior and exterior.
@@JSS Okay that will be cool so I will wait to get the new generation and than you...
The new CX-5 is the best value under the luxury class under $600K!
Yes it is a bargain.
With the rear seats (40/20/40), does the 3rd one also fold down? You only showed the other 2.
They all will fold down. The middle (20) by itself or paired with the driver’s side.
Hey Jonathan! Is that Sonic Silver only available in the GT?
It’s available on Touring and above.
Waiting on signature review 😬
I’m sorry that it may be a while.
It that much different
100th edition in Canada only gets the older infotainment. That's so unfair. Probably a cost saving move? Its not right Mazda.
I think it also has to do with early release of 100th anniversary before new infotainment was ready, and use of older system in other 2021 Canada versions.
It has the apple car play?!
Yes CarPlay is standard on CX-5.
What’s the best cx-5 trim for fuel economy?
The best is probably the sport or Touring because of smaller wheels. They are all rated the same though.
Wait for the CX-50?
I wouldn’t because it’s going to be at least two years away.
Do you think future mazdas will have panoramic sunroofs?
In my own opinion, probably not anytime soon. They do this to improve their safety ratings in their cars by making the structure more durable. At least that was what I was told
I think the bee platform Mazda6 will have a pano option. Then it will spread to others that share that platform. They have had some moonroof glass shattering issues in this latest CX5 generation, so a different material pano may be a good idea.
@@aytugdemir1323 Mazdas have never had panoramic sunroof not even as an option. Where are you getting your information. Mazda has always steered clear of them as they felt it compromised the rigidity of their vehicles
@@mpg65 Sorry, thats my mistake. I would've sworn they used to have one as an option, I must've known wrong. It would really help add to their to "luxurious" kind of aspect in their cars if they had one avaliable though
@@aytugdemir1323 no they never did
i thought 2021 back up camera was the new updated with line guides that moved?
It’s new but didn’t get the trajectory.
Other than the head unit everything looks exactly like my 2020 GT. 🤔
There are more changes across other models, but there’s a lot that is the same.
Can the soul red come without the pin stripe?
Yes, we added the pinstripe at the dealership.
👍 📹 and 👍 🚗 my next 🚗 would definitely be a mazda
Thank you! Please keep me updated when you get one!
Can you get grand touring in awd?
Yes all non turbo models are available in AWD.
My 2020 GT doesn’t have those line decals 👀
I know where you can get some 😁
@@JSS where? 👀
Awesome!
Any Idea When do Mazda CX-5 Signature trim are coming, I am literally waiting for it.
I know some have popped up here and there. Just a smaller percentage of build.
I see both vehicles has it - so what is that yellow line with Mazda logo going around the windows and down the hood?
Pinstriping with a Mazda logo. Dealer add-on?
Yes it’s a vinyl pinstripe with our dealership name and logo.
@@JSS Thanks for the info.
Not too keen on that extra long pin stripe. What's the point of promoting Kodo design of it's ruined by pin stripes?
Thats a dealer accessory and doesn't come factory installed
Yes we add it at the dealer, and can be removed at the owner’s request.
Does it have wireless charging? If so is it standard? And what would a lease look like on the upgraded model you showed? I’m in California the prices may be different but just so I can get an idea
No wireless charging unfortunately. Leasing isn’t that great on them yet. Lease payment is around $450 with no money down on the Silver vehicle in this video.
Cool.
I have a 2017 CX-5 GT, and I must honestly express my HUGE disappointment that NOT A SINGLE THING has changed in this car's exterior for 2021....not the headlights, not the grille, not the rear lights, not one little cosmetic difference, not even the damn wheels are different for 2021! This means that, generally speaking, there is NOTHING at all to distinguish a 2021 model from the previous years since 2017. Years ago, it used to be that every year car models came out with some exterior change (even if small) versus the prior year, which was how you could visually tell the years apart. For FIVE years now, Mazda has CHANGED NOTHING to the body of the CX-5. I was expecting some type of change(s) for 2021 to motivate me to get this model, but after driving this model for 3.5 years now, I am not really thrilled about driving the exact same-looking car for X amount of years again. HEADS UP, MAZDA...drivers do get BORED with their cars after a few years and want to see some changes here and there every couple of years to entice buyers and make them feel they are driving something new and different. Unfortunately, this driver will not be getting a 2021 CX-5 and will be looking at other vehicles for "refreshment". A lost sale!
Go buy a cx-30 if you want a different look..... they have been working on the interior for the past couple years which was greatly needed so go complain about something else.
They literally just changed the rims in 2019, and I think it made the car look way better; I hated the old triangle pattern on the 2017 and 2018 CX-5's. And this car has actually changed greatly since the inital 2017 launch. Way more safety features, better infotainment screen, better engine, more luxury features like those rear heated seats and the ventilated seats in the front, you get the idea. The exterior change won't be coming until 2023. And the CR-V hasn't changed since 2017 either, so its not just an "issue" with this car. They did so much work on the interior, and the new turbo is really worth it in my opinion. The older Mazdas also dont have the beloved nappa leather seats like they do in the signature Mazdas from now, so that's even more of a plus. These are still excellent, stunning vehicles. I've also been familiar with the same design for a few years now, and I still love looking at them. Japanese vehicles typically follow the "if it ain't broke, dont fix it" kind of ways, and people certainly shouldn't have a problem with it, because there's nothing wrong with the car at all. The CX-5 certainly don't need a complete rework of the car every 4 years, it should go for any car actually. If you're expecting a huge change every 2 years, go buy one of those crappy Hyundais. Keep in mind, huge changes like a whole different exterior body styling also depreciates a cars value by a lot. 👍
@@PhobicRaptor740 Thanks for the suggestion, but the CX-30 is not to my liking. By the way, it is MY prerogative to complain about whatever the heck I please!
I will take a nice looking "outdated 2017" mazda cx5 over a competitors got hit with an ugly stick 2021 model. Besides in this price class its slim pickings for a nice looking compact suv which I happen to think cx5 is best. You wanna move up to 48k plus luxury range I could name at least 5 really nice looking compact suvs.
Mazda does need to shorten their refresh/remodel cycles. However there is always a handful or things that update from year to year, you may have to change trims to see and enjoy.
Why anyone would buy one of these without the turbo engine is beyond me
The natural asp. engine is very peppy and not everyone wants to upgrade to AWD
@@JSS but what about that cylinder deactivation
It looks the same and needed a major refresh or redesign.
We are still a couple of years away from major changes.
oh yeah still the smallest in the segment.
The others are getting bigger, that’s for sure.
The rear looks wierd, I don't like the narrow tailights
Narrow lights have kinda been the Mazda thing the last few years.
I am absolutely in love with them, but people have their preferences
Too small for a family 😢
It can be tight, although all 6 of my family were in one last night 😂
If a couple of inches of space is the only thing keeping people from buying these wonderful CX-5's, people need to re-adapt their taste in cars
The same model... So boring
The new infotainment gets me excited.
overrated
The Mazda brand has gained a lot of attention recently. My personal feelings aside…there must be something true about these vehicles.
Thanks for the update vid Jon - lots news as always. not so sure about your revised vid intro - your brand is equally important as it helps set an expectation on what is to follow and your new intro appears to have reduced your presence. I guess we’ll get used it. Cheers - k
I really appreciate you saying that. I was beginning to think that I had too much of me in the last ones. I decided to show more of the cars. This one being the CX-30. I will continue to update with more 2021s, and will show my face every now and then 😁👍🏻. Thank you again!
will there be a hybrid version of the cx-5 or mazda 3? did they change the touch screen so you can swipe now? are there any AWD differences in the 2021 3 and cx-5?
No hybrid for a long time (at least in the U.S), infotainment is not touch screen, and the AWD changes probably won't be coming until the next generation CX-5, rumored to be launched in 2023. There are many big things that are supposed to be coming in 2023. Maybe that hybrid will be avaliable with the new generation
I think hybrid 3 may be available before CX-5. MX-30 may be first hybrid (electified) vehicle. The only “differences” to AWD on 2021 is more availability of Off-road assist on other models.
Can u please do a comparison between 2020 and 2021 version of CX-5? Would like to know what have they upgraded from 2020 to 2021 version.. thanks!!!
I’ll see what I can do. Running out of 2020s
@@JSS As far as I can tell the difference is the infotainment unit. Can you point out any other difference?
Jonathan Sewell thank you!!
It's a shame Mazda retired the Liquid Silver Metallic paint. It was in the middle between Silver and Grey.
I really liked it. I wish they would add more colors and go a little bright.
I absolutely miss liquid silver also! I thought it was gorgeous - seems the best things never last long. Machine Gray is all we get now
Time to update the CX 5-9 interiors with the cockpit, and Infotainment controls.
Also need rear seat usb charging. This offers no rear seat charging at all.
I don’t think we’ll see many control changes moving forward. I’m sorry I did not show the rest USBs. There are two in the rear armrest.
@@JSS I know, Mazda needs to update the interiors. A new CX 50 will be coming in the next few years and the Mazda 6 will be released next year possibly or spoken about for 2022-23
@@JSS No problem. Thanks for the response. Enjoy your weekend.:)
It's not a touch screen! WHY?!!!!
They don't let you do anything with the touch screen while driving anyways so a touch screen on these cars is pointless!
Mazda decided to not include a digitizer this time around. They had one before that worked until 5 mph.
@@JSS normally i use the touch screen in the 2020 cx 5
Too many Reds on the road. Silver looks sweet
Oh. Is the turbo really needed?
I leased one 2.5 years ago and cannot wait to end the lease! My wife and I have talking about what to lease next about 6 months after we got it. We rely heavily on navigation because of our work and I have to say the Mazda has the worst navigation I have ever experienced!! I was offered to upgrade to android auto or apple play for $250 from the dealership, however I don't think I should pay for it, it should be given to me for the pain and suffering that I've been subjected to by the navigation system that I paid $450 to add to my leased vehicle. With that said I do like Mazda just not the Cx5.
That’s surprising. The CX-5 has a high retention rate. And now they all come with CarPlay and Android Auto. The CX-30 is a nice choice also if you don’t need as much space. Let me know what you think about it.
What about the Mazda CX-5 GS AWD does it have the 10.25 display in Canada, when I checked with dealer in Canada they said its like the old infotainment and no change. Do you have any idea about that. Thanks
Canada did not get new system.
Does the carbon edition come with Bose speakers ?
Yes it has the Bose system
@@JSS strange, on their website It says “6 speaker audio system” 😒
@@vinishkumar8832 you can get it with different packages. Those aren’t all listed on the website. I just got one recently. The carbon edition can get red leather or black leatherette. Turbo or non turbo. Sun Roof and Bose or not
No rear USB ports?checkers on those long trips 👌
I’m sorry there are USBs in the rear armrest. 2 - 2.1 AMP
when CARBON CX% will be available? I can't wait to purchase
It’s available now in some parts of the country.
Jonathan, is the interior lighting also LED for touring too?
It is not. Just GT and higher.
What trim gets you heated side mirrors?
The Grand Touring
@@aytugdemir1323 well that stinks. If you want the carbon turbo edition no heated mirrors. Wow
@@interestedtech1 pretty unfortunate, but they have to lure customers to spend more money somehow.
Grand Touring and above.
No significant changes at all, just a redesign of user interface
This was certainly a very needed change. Next very significant change comes in 2023 according to people's predictions.
The slight changes were needed.
Hmmmm I have this exact CX-5 package and the interior lights aren’t LED as Jon described here. Mine are incandescent
Test drove a 2021 GT premium today and LOVE it.
They are very nice!
@@JSS does Mazda not haggle on the price at all?
Can you get another color, other than the white, for the seats with the soul red exterior?
Yes there are two options. White or Black.
Yes there are two options. White or Black.
Yes there are two options: white or black
Yes there are two options: white or black
That accent tho
😂 Do I have an accent?
That infotainment screen looks a lot better than the cx30, why can't they put one in the cx30
I’m sure it’s really a competitive pricing scenario.
mazda cx-5 aerodynamic n futuristic design, responsive acceleration low-high rpm, interior premium quality with affordable price
Yes! Thanks for sharing.
You had me until cylinder deactivation. Ugh.
It can simply be avoided if you just opt for a turbo model. Or you can disable it yourself somehow. There's ways
@@aytugdemir1323 what if I don't want/need a turbo. You can't disable it "somehow".
@@civiliansheepdog3637 There are ways, although they require a pretty costly scan tool. You have to reprogram the computer to not do that (I'm not entirely sure how it works.) Cylinder deactivation won't destroy your engine anyways, its not like Start/Stop where it strains your engine, starter, etc., it just deactivates your cylinders and then gets them working again when needed. But if cylinder deactivation is still such a huge deal breaker for you for some reason, then don't buy this car. They're amazing cars other than that little situation
I can’t ever notice when they’re deactivated.
They need to use the cx30 buttons and multimedia unit in the middle on this new cx5s..it’s so much more elegant with better quality buttons
Yes, I agree. That will be a next generation upgrade.
