Matilda visits Saint Nazaire

On the last day of our trip through Brittany we had a look at the harbour of Saint-Nazaire. To this day it is home to the submarine pens built in the second world war and the famous dry docks which played a key role in the war in the Atlantic. From the roof of the fortified locks you can see the docks that were the target of operation Chariot (the raid on Saint Nazaire) and a monument reminds visitors about the role of the Campbeltown and what is known as "the greatest raid of all".

The lock is now home to the Espadon and the kids enjoyed exploring the first French submarine to have dived beneath the Arctic ice field.
