The glass did not scratch from the laminated floor itself (it is not hard enough for that), but probably some dirt particles on it, which get brought in the house when you go out. There is all kinds of stuff that you can carry into your home without even knowing, because it is so small. It could've been a metal shaving, a tiny rock piece, even sand. But I agree there is something wrong with today's "tempered glass" on electronics. I have never in my life managed to scratch (real) glass with day-to-day stuff, in fact the only way to scratch glass (and cut it) is with a special tool designed for that, the tip is made from silicon carbide or real/artificial diamond, literally the hardest materials known to man. Yet I hear daily of scrached phone screens, something doesn't add up. I can tell you another story - I work in a metal shop and my phones are regularly showered with sparks (from angle grinders, etc.) or literal molten metal (from plasma cutters, etc.) and I have never had an issue, because all my phones had gorilla glass (up to 5, donno about the new Victus). Even molten steel droplets are not able to harm tempered glass and you can safely blow them away with compressed air later. My last phone, a Moto G52, came with NEG glass, which Motorola hid for quite a while before admitting it btw, and that thing MELTED when the phone got sprayed with sparks from a nearby plasma cutter. It got tiny holes in it, maybe not all the way through, but enough to scratch your fingers when you try using the phone. Last Motorola phone I will ever buy, at least until they bring back Gorilla glass, that is. I bet that NEG "glass" is not even glass anymore, no glass melts like that, it has to be plastic. So yea, don't trust "ratings" and "specs", especially when you make your money with that tablet; maybe if you have experience with the same glass type from previous models you can, that's up to you. If you are not sure, slap a tempered glass protector just to be sure, even if it somehow gets scratched, you can easily replace that.
Hey there, I work in a sibling industry and can explain a little on this. The "scratches" you see are usually the result of coating removal. So this is stuff like anti-glare, anti-finger print coating that is softer than the glass in the tablet. It is right to say that the tablet's base layer glass still isn't scratched in the technical sense, but because the coating has been removed visible "scratch" lines are visible because the light bends differently around that area now because of the absence of the top coat(s).
I've got the spigen tempered glass screen protector for the tab s8 ultra installed on my Tab S9 Ultra and it has worked brilliantly for me for the last 2 Weeks. S Pen 🖊 feels as smooth as ever! No problem at all. I didn't even have to increase the touch sensitivity. I would definitely recommend doing the same thing to everybody else. Kind regards Willi
My favorite are tempered glass protectors and use them on all tablets and phones for the past seven plus years after learning the painful lessons you just did. I always get the ones that come in packs of two or three because eventually they’ll get scratched or cracks. Better the screen protector gets broken than the glass of the unit.
Hello! @WMARUoriginal I just bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, and I'm worried for my S-pen. Does a tempered glass screen protector affect S-pen usage?
having kids is a very relevant factor when it comes to deciding if you need a screen protector. I got my tab s6 lite for a couple years now and the screen is completely scratchless.
Unfortunately sand and dirt causes scratches and micro-abrasions quite easily. I don't think I want to use my Tab S9U until I get a screen protector for it.
In India we do have Matte Glass Screen protectors so basically you get that paper like texture along with glass protection and it doesn't leave marks if I use apple pencil on my iPad, also I don't think Samsung tablets will get that much affected either since it works on Wacom's magnetic pen technology so as long as it's near the display it should work, the electromagnetic spring mechanism inside the pen and the extra layer underneath the display which detects the pen pressure and hovering can still recognise it even after glass protection applied
Agreed. Only problem is SPen nibs really don't do well against matte screens. I've tried both the black and white and same thing, they wear out after a few days.
The wearing varies a lot from user to user... For a while, I thought Intuos 4 were a totally waste of money, as all people said (coming from the glass surface of intuos 3) going to the plastic surface made that surface super tending to get scratches, and worse, the nibs would also get wasted. Well, in 11 years, I only changed twice the nibs. It's 14 years now, still works all.. With this intuos 4 XL I had to change the pen, as it got its internal chip (or mechanism) physically broken after 12 years or so of mostly full day use. But had yet plenty of nibs to go. My conclusion is that there's a lot of variation in pressure from one user to another. Now, about SPens, I agree... As subtle as I am with pens, yet mine has already got some erosion in very little time. Nothing serious, I could remove the very tiny bit with just a nail, and it is smooth again.. But that happened even without a screen protector. Luckily, there are great pen alternatives. From a recent Teoh's video, some are even more sensitive, like the LAMY AL Star EMR. I have it as a next purchase, as I absolutely love how it behaves (clearly seen in his videos) in all matters compared to a Spen. He has a full review of it, and also is used in other videos like in "Samsung Tab S9 Ultra (artist review)".
@@tommo9914 About the S Pen Tips I would recommend you to not use the S Pen if you are an artist on a Samsung tablet the reason being even if they are great they are fragile and those tips are impossible to find in most places so 2nd best option Use the Wacom One Pen you can get it separately and it works perfectly fine with any Wacom EMR technology tablet that supports the 4000+ levels of pressure this way you get a sturdy pen which has proper replaceable tips available in the market and you lost nothing you just had to pay around 40 dollars

In all honesty, to make a tablet kids' safe, vendors would need make one of those rugged versions for devices to be used on the mountain or for construction workers... My S7 FE had some nasty falls from much higher and it is surprising undamaged yet (touching wood...). It even has fallen over regular (not wooden) floor (from the bed!!). It's seems the harder the glass, the easier it is to scratch/crack - the samsung matte screen protector 'not the book cover you reviewed' I'm quite happy with, it's very thin and not overly matte that it effects picture quality 🎉
I like the feel of matte screen protectors on my Tabs, and on my 2 in one, it gives a Cintiq grip feel to me. BTW I view my tablets as a tool. All I care about is the drawing experience. Good experience, good art!
I have a hard time getting an idea of the amount of texture on screen protectors available for my Samsung tablet. I'm looking for a cintiq feel, which model do you have?
@colin781 Try a cheap paper feel texture screen protector made for your device first. I use Green Onion Supply Screen protector made for a Cintiq 13 inch and I cut to size to my device. Good luck . Remember every one draws differently.
I have a screen protector on my Tab s7+, and i currently have a crack in it, and i definitely would rather that than the crack being on my screen. I never had any issue using the S Pen with it on and i didn't notice any worse quality of the image, and even if i did, like i said, i would rather my tablet be completely intact. I just know myself too much to go around with no kind of protection, that's why i bought the case and screen protector before the actual tablet.🤣🤣🤣

Yeah how? I've been using a tab 6 2022 edition for the past year throw in shopping bags etc screen still like new not a mark! I just got my s9 ultra today it better not scratch!
Have you looked in to the hardness of things? Like mohs scale.. Glass seems to range between 4-7 and dust can be harder than glass, usually around 6.5 for normal household dust. Since his screen fell on the floor there would surely be dust and grit on the floor. Your shopping bag is probably made of a softer fabric... If your shopping bag were a 6.5 and your screen were 6.5 then the screen can be scratched. If the shopping bag is softer than the glass I don't think it would leave a scratch. I'm not sure what I am talking about though but I think this is correct..
I've used Samsung Note devices since the S6, never used screen protector, no issues, I would have to say common sense use, then you don't need it, but we all have different uses and habits/care when it comes to devices.
