    Thank you for your restoration videos Barry. This is exactly what I am working on in my Selectamatic David Brown tractor, after the Spool valve seized up from sitting unused with the lift arms down. The Spool valve was stuck up with milky oil that rusted it in place. I'll be taking it apart to clean and resemble it properly.

    Another great vid Barry, you make every one a learning aid, good of you to tell the non-engineers about the lead in on a parallel reamer, hope you have fully recovered from covid.

      Hi Ken, not quite fully recovered but around the 80% mark, still get out of breath very quickly and the fatigue is rediculous, the number of times we've come back from simple things, even shopping at Asda and you fall asleep on the sofa.
      However many thanks for the kind words and your support very much appreciated

    Mega useful video this one sir, thank you. I remember reading and re-reading the manual on how to do this a few months ago before i found your channel and had a stomach churning and head scratching reluctance to even attempt this job.
    However I cleaned up my control mechanism today so will be setting up my clearances tomorrow whilst watching this again with no worries about the double Dutch from the manual.
    I noticed you put on a paper gasket between the axle and control mechanism, i took off an aluminium one, checked the book, part number 926386, it's common to all models.
    The one on the left hand side behind the hydraulic cylinder however was a yellow plastic one.
    Checked with DB Parts and they said this is standard as i ordered both.
    Just for your interest.
    All the very best.

      Cheers Mark, yes the one that came off was aluminium, sure it was superseded with a paper one, I think the idea of the aluminium one was to cut down on any movement due to the loading of the right hand bracket and rock shaft,
      as long as you don't put a thick paper one in it's not going to move very far,
      many thanks
      Barry

      @manfromthemist1958 Thanks for that, my brain has been trying to understand the reason behind the different materials.
      The aluminium one under the top link sensing unit presumably for that same reason, because of the loads and weight involved.
      Would you have any thoughts on a sealant if any for the aluminium gasket between the axle and the control mechanism? I was thinking either 515 because it's "metal flanges" or maybe nothing because aluminium is soft.
      So far I've been trying the Wellseal on the axle, no drips yet.
      Cheers.

    • @manfromthemist1958
      @manfromthemist1958  2 дні тому

      Hi Mark I use both of those, your right the aluminium would probably seal on it's own, but it's such a job to get to it again if it leaks, so belt and brases for me, I did the rockshaft bracket with 515 and sealed all the axle up with wellseal both are brilliant products.
      just keep everything clean and grease free before assembly.
      many thanks
      Barry

    Fantastic illustration of the valve block setup, thank you Barry, seeing this as opposed to just looking at the manuals/descriptions is so much more useful, thanks for talking through to this who aren't from an engineering background.
    It is worth searching the DB Forum for service manuals, there is someone kindly hosting copies of all the original service manuals, which are far more in depth than the I&T manual.
    Regards, Martin

    Thanks very much mate , I could not get my head round setting this at all by reading that book , I,ve just watched your video & got it in one , it also shows up what is quite possibly wrong with my linkage lowering speed ( incredibly slow , hot or cold oil ) , the shim pack under the plate needs re - appraising as you have clearly done , as , not only may the spool valve travel setting on it,s locknuts be just wrong , the clearance between the actuator lever & the end of the spool valve is just as critical . Many Thanks mate . You,re the master at this , you lead the pack .

    this is the best video ever seen on the hydraulics of a selectamatic. adjusting the spoolvalve should interest any hobbyist. but how important is the tcu valve?when you don't use the tcu?

    • @manfromthemist1958
      @manfromthemist1958  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi Jan, I would think it's very important, even if not used, My thought train would be if the valve is setup correctly 100% it's easier to diagnose problems when they occur, if you only set the bits you use, the bits we don't set may have an adverse effect on the remaining parts of the valve, and it's only a two minute job, Self satisfaction should also be considered, if it's worth doing do it right. and it's fun.
      Cheers Jan

    Watching the master class on setting up valve chest(you). Around 13.30min you tap the outside dowel home. Did you notice the open hole in front of it? It's for a detend onto the cross shaft. Bearing spring and dowel to hold it all in. It is in the manual but you have to look close to see it. M😀

    • @manfromthemist1958
      @manfromthemist1958  Рік тому

      Hi Marshall, does yours have a dowel to keep everything in place? the shaft keep everything in place on mine, you place the spring and ball down the hole and put the shaft in with the flat down and rotate to easy entery, if you have a look at
      #6 rebuilding the hydraulic selector at 11-30mins you see me put the bits together
      cheers

      @@manfromthemist1958 Sent you an email with photo. Shaft has to line up with roll pin in plastic forks.I would think you will have metal forks on your model. It has a screwdriver slot in one end that lets you turn in place. M

    An original DB setting gauge like the one you made sold on eBay for £370 a couple of weeks back!!!

      Hi David, I believe you can pick them up from ebay from time to time, there not difficult to make just fiddly and very time consuming, as with all gauges the work is in the setting out, but with minimal tools you can easly make one.

    Thank you for these videos. I am currently rebuilding my valve chest for an 885 in Alabama, U.S. I struggled for the last few months until I found your videos. One question, my lowering valve needle is curved instead of pointed, almost like it was crushed in. Is this normal? I cannot find pictures anywhere and the book is hard to see the end of needle. Thanks again.

      Hi joran, my honest advice to you would be, go on FB search David Brown Tractor group and join most of the manuals you'll need are there and are free, ( the real manuals)
      I bought my I and T manual(haynes type) from agriline in the UK it has it's limitations
      lets know how you get on
