Thanks for another great episode, you even make heating and cooling interesting to the uninitiated such as myself! Another reason I so love this series is just the opportunity to feast my eyes on these old homes, the workmanship is often dazzling.

Quality content again Brent. I think you made a great point re, the level that you’re building on compared to, Matt, Jake and Steve. I would imagine that many of us are more closely aligned to where you’re at too.
Please share some more of the products and systems you’re using, the input is very valuable. Cheers!

Thanks! Great ideas and great projects! The window may be stain grade, but I think you meant stained glass.

Hey Brent, I love that you visualize the rooms before they're built in order to incorporate a unico system or other method for heating and cooling. I know too many architects that only deal with the issues AFTER the subs have already installed ducts and made a mess of the ceilings/rooms. As you know it is not that difficult IF you visualize and think thing through the various mechanical components and utilize some of the newer technology. Keep share and hopefully more builders and architects will incorporate your way of thinking!

That ginormous mechanical room at the beginning of the video looks like the Nostromo!

When you were showing the mechanical room of the 1970's house I thought I saw multi-zone (hot deck/cold deck) air handlers with pneumatic actuators.

When I saw you banging on that pipe insulation, considering the age of the house, I immediately thought about asbestos.

For heating, radiant floor heating (with water tubes) fits "the old house spirit" perfectly but such a system is not very suited for cooling... (a cold floor helps, but it's not the best practice).
For cooling, you need a system that can (and will) also remove the moisture from the air and AFAIK a HVAC-system is still best suited for that.

I agree with your comfort and design philosophy, but I really can't relate to a 20,000 square foot mansion. Could you do some talks for us normal guys. I am about to do a major remodel on a 2400 sf concrete block ranch built in 1968. I do learn something from all your videos, but I need something more my size.

Don, what climate zone are you in? Will there be insulation on the walls and/or attic?

My opinion: It is hard to go wrong with attic and crawlspace encapsulation. Remove and treat any fungal growth. Air seal the spaces and apply closed cell foam to the attic decking, eaves, gable end walls, band boards, rim joists, and foundation walls. Put down 10 mil vapor barrier in the crawlspace and seal it at all penetrations. Add supply air to each space from your HVAC. If the existing ducts are kept and they are leaky enough, that might be enough supply air in its own. Add passive registers in the ceiling and floor to allow air pressure to remain balanced and leave a path back to the return. Install a high-efficiency, quality heat pump.

I love these well designed older homes the builders were way better than modern homes just shaped like boxes and you need a mechanic to keep them running because its so much computer stuff..

Water holds 4.23 x more energy than air so you can move energy around with water in a much smaller conduit.

As a note to this, think it was just the guitar rifts in the background during some parts. It’s a heavier sound so can start to blend into the voice, but for the most part I get like I could hear Brent’s voice ok. (Watching on my phone, not sure if that makes a difference)

why do all these fantastic videos have a section where he's talking over obtrusive music that's been added to the mix?? please I'm begging you, stop doing that, the music doesn't help.
