IMO there’s nothing better than a variegated, hipped slate roof with flared eaves!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I could listen to you talk for hours and hours! You put your finger on exactly what makes a house “right” or “wrong” every time, and I’m always amazed to hear the logic behind why it should be that way! I grew up in an area with beautiful older homes, so I was unintentionally trained by exposure to recognize a well designed and well built house. It’s been a huge disappointment for me to move away to a town that experienced its population boom in the height of the McMansion era. I see these houses and just instantly know something’s not right with the windows, the scale of the dormers, the pitch of the roof, etc. but couldn’t explain why until I found you! I can’t express just how much it amazes me to learn the logic and function behind every little detail that we assume to just be ornamental. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

There were terne standing seam roofs. Terne is a mild steel with a coating of zinc and tin alloy to protect the steel from rust.

What gives them function? The ones in Williamsburg are just for show, maybe some light in the attic. No use in a living space.

They let in light. That is 100% of their function. There was no other way to let light on on a pitched roof. Now we have skylights, I’m not sure if they are interchangeable.

Masonry on dormers is one of my biggest pet peeves (after pork chop eaves!) No dormer would be able to support full thickness masonry. If there is masonry on a dormer it it cheap, stuck on thin veneer.

We recently took a trip to Norway. We were told that Norwegian slate is prized as a roofing material because it has a very high density which increases its longevity.

Can you comment on the Eyebrow dormer. (Audel's #3, pg 991-992.)
I find only ~ 1:10 are done w/ concave rafters, unfortunately. That's what makes the "look", imo.

@@BrentHull I would imagine yes. But are they actual short panels with real seems that are soldered underneath the way it was done traditionally? Or are they “fake” seams is my question. If they are fake, how were they created? We are going to do standing seam on our house and I’d love to have seams in it. My thought was cut the panels and have real seams..
