Nothing wrong with Rick's voice. If there's anything thin about it compared to the well-known recorded version dating 20 years ago, it is because of this mix, recording, not because of his voice. It is as good as ever, if not better. It has become even more Tom Jonesian. Rick is playing safe in this performance - how could he not after 20 years? But you can hear his commitment in his singing beyond the strictly necessary (at 5:40), so you know his voice is up to par.
I enjoyed watching this performance, because I'm only 2-1/2 months younger than Rick. I admired him when this song came out because it was so awesome to hear a BARITONE pop singer in 1987. I was a metalhead at the time, and despite my natural bass/baritone voice, I was desperate to be able to hit the high notes. But when I failed to hit the high notes, it was comforting to be able to come back to this song. Sure, now, after years of practice I can hit those high notes, but I still like to sing in my "natural" range now and then, and I'll always come back to this song. And now I'll also come back to "Cry for Help", which I just discovered today. What a great song and performance!

Not too many singers from the 80's still sound this amazing *live*. Hell, today's singers couldn't hold a candle to him. Also, he quit because he couldn't stand having to lip sync.
