I'm so happy for Mat. He found his passion and has so much fun. He doesn't look tired like before. But it's a bit sad for me because I absolutely can't get in strategy games like Warhammer. I want him to continue with it since I want the best for him. But it hurts how whenever I come to this channel and see how little he has posted I realize I have lost one of my favourire channels. Anyway really glad for you Mat.

try table top simulator. the barrier for entry is a lot lower.
Or is big strategy games are too daunting there are smaller games like warcry and kill team, both of which are great.

The store opening seems to be a local problem. Our local store had a reopening due to a move. There was a staff member from another store who’d been brought in to solely run up and down the line, let people know what stock levels were and that everyone was OK.
2 hour wait, numbers limited inside for Covid safety, ten minutes for the cash register once I’d picked up what I wanted.
Enough stock for me to grab limited stuff for all my friends who’d asked me to get things for them.
They can and do manage to get store openings right, seems to be a problem for that store or region…

16:56 I think that's the biggest problem, people say don't complain about the price it's a luxury hobby, which; fair enough, it is. However at the prices we have to pay, it is criminal that they don't include all the options. It's like people defending themselves over warping on forgeworld resin, "it's easy just put it in water and fix it", sure I can do that but I shouldn't have to; if it's a luxury hobby then why do half the kits not feel like luxury items?

i attempted to go to the store opening and it was a damn nightmare, I'm currently disabled and had someone drive me. as soon as I got there and I saw the line I knew there was no way in hell I was getting in, it's like GW is purposely doing things the hard way.

When it comes to pricing, I always work in "hours of fun per £/$". I bought Abaddon for example, £37.50 for a 50 grams of plastic but i spent 100 hours painting him and then countless more playing him all of which were immensely satisfying. I even spend loads of time on my basic spod CSM's and give them daft names.
As for the books the new subscription may be worth it if this is a main hobby, although, i love the feel of owning a book and reading all the material.
Ultimately, it's definitely an expensive hobby but you can take it step by step and it gives you something other hobbies can't.

    • @AR-Race
      @AR-Race 3 роки тому +1

PS. in terms of not having complete weapon options, i think that is to increase variety used in the game and limit overuse of specific tactics. Reaper chain cannons for example, you get 1 for 5 Havocs because it's a beaassst of a gun.

I think as an OG Warhammer fan where I have a divide with Matt is that he's really seeing this thing come together after years of this company really messing up. I could regale him with tales of GW's countless missteps over the years. What you're seeing today is the end result of decades of problems the company had. Flashback ten years and you'd have League level complaints. That being said it's nice to see that GW has gotten a bit better over the years. Their fan policies though are still complete ass. They're really, REALLY, aggressive against fan artists and content creators. But yeah it's nice to see that the game is well balanced and in a good place.
I'm also glad to see that you're really enjoying the content you're doing now. For a long time it really seemed like you took no joy in your content so to see and hear the enthusiasm is nice.

I've been getting a lot into the lore of Warhammer thanks to playing and really enjoying Total War: Warhammer I & II since a couple of years ago, and I think it is an amazing narrative but if I had to pick one thing I hate about the universe, it's the designs, specially those of 40K, a lot of them are just way to complex and over-the-top for me.

If you want to get into Warhammer but pricing is too much of an issue, there isn’t an active community around you, etc. there is an amazing alternative:
    The video games.
    For fantasy:
The Total War: Warhammer series is the most lively and engaging you will ever see the setting and all its factions. It is an rts with a civ-like campaign that has almost every single unit for every single faction in the setting with so much over the top-ness, diversity, and heart that there is always something new to catch your eye either lorewise or flavor wise.
Vermintide and its sequel is a fps with left 4 dead elements that puts you neck deep in equal parts the world and rat guts. Visceral, great melee combat, and as grimdark as it can get. The writing is also of note as well, and you can quickly find yourself growing attached to the characters.
Blood Bowl is a turn based “football” game that is a more direct adaptation of one of their tabletop games. It is in the warhammer fantasy universe, but an alternate timeline that is much more silly and humorous. It is basically just the Blood Bowl tabletop game given form. Great for some light hearted fun.
    40k:
The Dawn of War series is the coca cola classic and the gold standard of a 40k rts. Base building, fun gameplay, and faithful as can be to the setting. As warhammer as it gets.
Mechanicus is an xcom-like strategy game that puts you in the shoes of the toaster molesting murder priests doing what they do best and messing with the Necrons. Allows you to customize your squad, strategize, and explore massice metallic underground tombs. The soundtrack is also rock solid. If you want to see more of either of these factions or you just like robots, this is the game for you.
Battlefleet Gothic Armada is strategic ship warfare…but in space! If the topic of ship to ship space dogfights interested you, and you love the spectacle of outmaneuvering and broadsiding with massive city sized vessels belonging to the various races, this may catch your eye.

My pet peeve with Warhammer is that the space marine packs only have ultramarine transfers, meaning if you collect ANY other chapter, you need to buy an extra transfer sheet. What makes this more annoying is that they used to include a transfer sheet with all the major chapters, but I think in 8th edition they changed it to just ultrasmurfs for no apparent reason

The aspect of gaming but with something physical and tangible with friends who represent themselves entirely to their own likes in a game drew me in and got me into the hours of sitting down building and painting little plastic guys. I started playing deamons in 5th edition because I really liked the random stuff they had. Then every release they changed deamons just a little bit and now they feel more like a nidzilla list then the random boogalo I started out with. If I wanted to play a tyranid style I would've bought tyranids.
I still bought some models after I stopped playing, because I really liked them. But they come with so many unwanted bits that I prefer not to get GW products anymore because of that.
And then I didn't even mention the metagame which was basicly "last codex is the best", the hilarious rules bloat and the rules being very unclear at times despite being really simplistic.
Don't get me wrong, I still like tabletop. I actively jumped on other tabletops like mechwarrior, dropzone and boardgaming. But warhammer and games workshop mismanagent just stopped my interest.

I don't have anything else to say, so uh... for the dark gods?

Top 3 things I love about Warhammer (AOS and 40k) as a viewer (not played a single match of the Tabletop since it's not _that_ famous in Germany, at least not in my reign):
-The live battle reports. It's so damn interesting to see new tactics, new armies, new maps, learning all the moves and crossing fingers when the dice getting rolled
-The books. My god, I've read so many books, Ciaphas Cain, Gaunts Ghosts, even Warhammer horror like Dark Harvest. I love love love the books!!
-The community. As Matt already explained, the community is just so wholesome, everyone is there to help and answer any question, no matter how stupid it sounds for Warhammer "veterans" :D
Glad Matt brought me to Warhammer😊
    The Emperor protects!

The point here that almost nobody gets is that GW is a miniature company, it's what they do, they sell models, not a game.
They created the game in order to save themselves for overloaded buyers that didn't have anything to do with the hundreds of models collected throughout time.
And we, most of us, got into this from the gaming point of view.
This pricing issue and books, and stuff will keep happening until GW realize that they could be a better, bigger and more profitable business making a better game with an easier access for new player, thus getting more buyers for the models in the long run.
The CEO of GW is a dude that worked several years as a CEO of a work waterproof cloathing factory. If he takes the big decision, he does it thinking on how to sell more of something that people doesn't need twice or thrice.
Look at Wizards of The Coast: Same rules since 1994 for 25+ formats of the same game. 20k+ cards. What happens when people complaing of not being able to use the thousands of cards they have?? > New format. SAME GAME, SAME RULES, new format.
GW creates new games with different models, with slightly or totally different rules. You can't play 40k with teamkill models (but you can play some teamkill wth 40k models).
WOTC: The most played format, the one that gives the more revenews > 100% free on PC. Magic Arena. They made the game available for everyone with a pc not older than 10 years.
Imagine what GW could do if they made the game more stable, more playable and more accessible.

Glad you are enjoying the hobby so much! Been following this journey since it's inception. As someone who has primarily played Horus Heresy for the last decade or so your ramblings on FW are dead on......the QC has only gone downhill in recent years (likely due to switching to CAD sculpts) and not to mention THE GOD DAMN RELEASE CYCLE. And some of the kits are just an awful building experience regardless of if some of the major pieces are warped or not, the dreaded storm eagle / fire raptor kits as a prime example, the dual plastic / resin combination was sent from the bowels of hell itself. Its enough to drive a man insane.

I've been a Tyranids player since the middle/bottom of 4th Edition. Got my first box of bugs second hand around the summer of 2006.
Just being honest, i don't give GW my monies anymore. After over a decade in the game, it's hard to justify supporting them. They just keep doing dirty dog shit year over year that make it really hard to be invested in the "fandom" proper.
I don't buy the books anymore. If there's only 3 pages worth of rules i need for my Tyranids, i'll dig it up on Scribd. If i'm out for models, i only get them secondhand, and i refuse to buy Forge World proper. If i really want a fancy mode, i deal with recasters for the reasons you specified. If i'm going to get a "miscast", I'm much happier paying $20 versus $200
Plus, GW killed "If The Emperor had a TTS Device" and i'm not ready to let that go.
I still play, but with other oldheads that pretty much feel the same as i do. 40k did allow me to reconnect with an old friend during quarantine, which was pretty rad, but it didn't take long for him to start spitting up the dogwater that GW continues to try and schlep.

Warhammer is a forever nope from me. The cost point is just too ridiculous. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to play, but when I can walk into a game store and buy full tabletop games for less than the price of 1 unit from 40k, we've got a problem. And I really like collecting figures. I've got an X-men Marvel Legends collection thats nearing 200 figures. But these legends figures are articulated, painted, highly detailed, come in nice looking window boxes and I've only ever paid more than $20/figure 1 time.

When you guys first started covering Warhammer, I didn't care. That opinion is slowly changing, now that you are in the trenches of the East India Workshop scam, with the rest of us. If its one piece of advise i can provide, that will make you happier: Buy everything from a recaster. You'll save a ton of money, and have alot less to complain about. I know thats not supporting the company who's product you love, and blah, buh-blah, blah, or some shit, but fuck those guys. For every American that buys recasted models, theres like 50 English dudes who'll drop $1000 on a special edition shoulder pad for their primaris army, and probably 20 Americans who will do the same, because they love getting fukt.

Yeah, talking about the box options not supporting the build options, I feel your pain. For a while, as a Tau player, a big unit of 9 Crisis Suits with 3 Cyclic Ion Blasters on each was top end. Unfortunately, the only GW source for CIBs, is from the $55 Tau Commander kit, and you only get 1 per box.

Good points, but the one issue I have is that 40k is a mostly toxic environment for table top miniature games (coming from a Warhammer player for over 20 years). I basically turned away from GW 40k due to the amount of toxic players (and this is from a non-tournament player). Happy for you if you can find your niche of good players like I did back in high school, but at large 40k is known as being a toxic player base. Good video though and you got a sub from me! cheers. (Saw At Ease Games in one screen, shout out to Ron and At Ease Games my Kings of War league plays down there often)

I’m just getting interested in the game. Started working on a 500 point list of harlequins and had exactly the experience you mentioned. Why 2 fusions pistols in a box with six dudes? Ok, I’ll look for just the pistols. Like a couple dollars a piece from eBay, but of course those are sold out. Find some third party arms that look about right. Go down a rabbit hole, now I’m considering just buying proxies for everything instead of given gw my money. I can get a just as cool looking murder clown sniper for like 20% of the price.

I have never played Warhammer and probably won't since I already am in a quite expensive hobby (BJD) but I love jsúst looking at all the models and I even have some Lore books. The Universe is just so cool and I have a hell of a lot of fun painting Miniatures, Sculptures and Dolls. Which I even sell sometimes and take Commissions for. It is so fun and the character designs of Warhammer are so refreshing and different of many things that you see nowadays. For example; the only half naked woman are Demons. :)

I felt very similarly about gundam model kits, which I also got into this year. Not only was it a really relaxing hobby to do with your hands, but it also allowed me to get into an artistic side of myself with painting. I had never really done anything art related in my life, and it so much more satisfying than playing an online game.

The pricing is extra bad for US and AUS, it's not quite as bad here in Europe. There's talk of improvements regarding that situation for some countries though.
Edit: Tyranid Warriors have a 20-25% markup in the US as an example.

I have $200 worth of Battletech stuff. Battletech and Catalyst Games don't ask you spend thousands on their game. The game literally let's you play with two or four mechs. Good thing I like my MechWarrior stompy robots more. Warhammer 40k is too expensive for a game. GW rips their fans off. I hope they come around and treat their fans better. I'll just stick to the novels for this game.

From a person who only tipped into the TTRPG side of 40k that lore is ..... WOW. Had friends in college who played the war game side and hearing how much armies/minis and paint were I was shocked. I enjoy hearing them talk about it and yeah 40k people are chill about new people asking questions about armies, lore, important people in that world. Glad you are enjoying a great new hobby.

And we can get a brand new halfling mega-army from Mantic games from $160 USD minus tax. They're actually pretty good halfling models. Yes, a few are resin. Most are plastic kits. Also the game is easier to play than Age of Sigmar. The only downsides would be the default setting for it has incredibly boring lore (and its the official setting for the moment). Yes, the models are not quite at the level of GW models, but they are making huge progress towards that. And they sell models for way less cost.

Compared with other wargames- buying a "Start Collecting" Box or splitting Indominus is not a cheap way to get started. Just no. That's why the near monopoly of GW over the wargaming market is just sad- because people are missing out on games that they might even enjoy more, for far less $. I could undesrstand those prices form a small company, that makes metal minis, they don't have the economy of scale, the logistics, the best deals from suppliers and they need to survive on a cople of purchases yearly. But there are no justifications for such prices from the biggest player on the market. I mean - look at Battlefront. The moved from metal to resin and dropped prices, becuase their costs were cut, and they had to compete with other manufacturers of 1:100 world war two model manufacturers.

I totally get you man. I abandoned League and WoW and got into DnD. Way better experience.
The sheer creativity you can get from it. And if you get into crafting, modelling, terrain building and painting (i don't even mention creating your own adventures and worldbuilding), there's just no comparing to ANY videogame.
Btw, since the weapons are so expensive for this game, why don't you just form a local community and get a 3d printer? There has to be someone that can use it. Or just buy a weapon and make a mold out of it. It will be a small investment but will save you tons of money

Reasons to not like Warhammer AoS and Warhammer 40k-
Games-Workshop is a trash, greedy company that eagerly stamps out creative growth from all facets of the community and charges insane premiums for their miniatures.
I love warhammer, but I have just purchased a 3D printer and have printed off entire armies for pennies on the dollar with comparable quality.

It's sad that all the good things about Warhammer are that the hobby itself is fun, but the bad things are all corporate BS. Bizarre IP practices, botched launches, zero transparency, suing fansites, doling rules out over $40 books and magazines, it's all just too much.

I have followed your channel since the actual champion spotlights and saw how negative you had become about lol, I loved this retrospective on your year playing warhammer and see how much happier you are now and I can't agree more, 40k and AoS have far, far more good aspects to them than bad, and as I quit Lol about 6 months ago now, I can definitely say the same isn't true about league. 10:12 and the rest of the video: You have to understand that GW are not making Warhammer for the players. They are doing it for money and only money. As long as players keep giving them money, they don't give a fuck about how you are treated. I know that they have a very good product and that it is hard to walk away from it but as long as you support their business model and all the surrounding BS with your $$ you are approving that business model and are not entitled to be treated any better. And while GW and WoTC may be the most egregious examples in the analogue game industry this is true of most other gaming companies and videogaming with Activision and EA may be even worse. But "Battlefront 2" showed us the only way get anywhere as consumers and that is to collectively boycott the product.
