  • I do a review of a bottling of Bunnahabhain 12, which I previously stated was overrated...but not because of the whisky in the bottle. Let's take a closer look at the general consensus around this iconic bottle, and determine if I actually know what I am talking about..............

    The Bunna 12 is far from overrated. One of the best 12 year olds out there EASILY. Needs a real heavy weight 12y old to outclass the bunna (and the price will probably be double the price of the Bunna in most markets)

    The Bunna 12 in terms of box ticking actually does tick the boxes and the value is great. Of course taste is subjective but I love it!

    I went to binny's in Rockford IL just 3 day's ago, picked up the 12 for $50 and the 2023 cask strength, which was a stroke of luck, every time I come back to Bunna I ask myself why I buy anything else.

    A fantastic breakdown of a bottle where I had the same viewpoint as yourself "Bunnahabhain 12 is overrated" . You raised some brilliant points and got me itching to return and try it again. Really glad to have stumbled on your channel and looking forward to diving deeper into your videos especially the Dalmore ones! Keep up the great stuff, cheers! 🥃

    No not at all. For the price this is a seriously delicious single malt scotch. It’s so well regarded with good reason.

    I’m glad that UA-cam threw this at me! You hooked me with the potentially negative review you hinted at, but I was delighted with what you said! 😂 The recurring love it receives is a massive credit to Masterblender Julieann’s skills, particularly as you are correct in saying that 80’s, 90’s, & 00’s batches contained a lot of stock aged well beyond the quoted age statement. This point was also evident in a “12 & 18 through the decades” Tasting we did with the Bunnahabhain Distillery Appreciation Society last year (maybe 2022🤔) where the early bottlings were very well thought of. Finally, if I’m forced into giving Tasting Notes, I regularly quote Chocolate/Orange/Orange oil, but even more so on the 18 than the 12. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, Slàinte from Islay. 😁👍🥃

      Thank you for the feedback! I just ordered my first bottle of the 18 year. I had to order from the UK as the price here in the US is out of control. Looking forward to finally trying it!

      We’d kept it about £125 for maybe 4/5 years but it had to go to £135 at the start of this year! I hope you enjoy it just as much. It’s a big favourite on the island amongst all the Distillery workers, not just Bunnahabhain staff! 😁👍🥃

    In my experience the Bunna 12 is quite 'batchy'. I loved my first bottle, but the next was very flat and boring (I suspect overused/tired casks). I know this is objectively a good whisky, but its frustrating when you get a dud; I will likely stay away from the standard 12 for awhile. However, I was able to try the 12 yo 2023 CS recently and was blown away.. I wish I could find a full bottle.
    Keep up the great content!

      Getting a dud batch can (and should) absolutely cause concern for future purchases. I didn't think it happens too often with Bunna but I don't blame you!

    Bought a Bunna 12 three summers ago and wasn’t blown away by it.
    Wasn’t disappointed either, as I found it a fairly pleasant sipper, just slightly bemused by the rave reviews it gets.
    Will try it again at some point, but weirdly it hasn’t been that visible in my market recently.

      I liked my first bottle a few years back well enough, but I have to say I am enjoying this one much more. I'm not sure if it's me or the whisky (probably me) that changed but I am pretty happy with it regardless. I hope you have a better experience the 2nd time around, and if not, there are always others to fill the gap!

    Seems to me that the better the reputation the more harsh people will be. Would never expect a bad bottle from Bunnahabhain.
    When I decided to start theis journey and I had a dozen 12 year olds open this was not evn in the top half. Years later I went back to that juice and realized what they were all hyped up about.
    There is no arguing with subtle complexity, combined with simply delicious malt.
    I was trying to chase a finish. Certainly the flavors of single malt are not the same as bourbon or coctails or beer. But if the experience ended with a twist I was blown away and this didn't go there. I'm still chasing that complex finish but now I appreciate a dram that just delivers a consistent intriguing experience.
    Bunna 12 does that very well. Its a moderately sherried 46% malt. Its not anything else. What else is like this? Tomatin 18, $100. The early BW GlenAllachie 12's. New Arran 10's.

      It's true that it becomes more easy to criticize things that are popular and maybe I was heading down that road myself, but I'm happy I challenged my perception and went out and proved myself wrong. Cheers!

    Malts from the past are no longer the same, even if made the same way: woods, barley, water distillation, ... all differ now. Peeps live in their memories when drinking, you review the NOW-malts... My stocks from 1994 differ greatly from 2004, and 2024 . . .

    whats the best liquor store in San Diego to buy bourbon in?

    • @WhiskyUncorked
      @WhiskyUncorked  3 місяці тому

      That's a tough one to answer. There are a lot of stores that have a good selection but high prices. Your best bet is to find places that do bundles and/or store picks and get friendly with the owner. If you buy their store picks they will usually eventually start giving you better prices on the rare stuff. I know some people that like Crest liquor for this reason. I haven't been there yet however (I am still kind of new to the area).

      @@WhiskyUncorked I'll be in San Diego on business, I was going to check out the bevmo, I'm a Canadian so I'd really like to get my hands on a garrison bros or Stagg if possible

    • @WhiskyUncorked
      @WhiskyUncorked  3 місяці тому

      @@syro666 You should be able to get Garrison Brothers of some kind at BevMo or Total Wine (Their websites are pretty accurate). Stagg is available at a number of stores but will be at secondary prices ($200-250). Last time I was at The Bottle House on Grape St. they had Stagg around that price. If you pay in cash, they have come down on pricing for me before.
