I wonder why they never called each other by their first names.

They did - but not always. Always remember the writers have to write for returning AND new audiences at the same time.

@@chrispnw2547 I never heard Bentley call them anything other than Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson or Mr. and Mrs. J. And don't recall either of them ever calling him Harry; only Mr. Bentley or Bentley.

@@freshstart1561 Calling someone by their first name is considered "in your face"? Wild. I always thought that that's what first names were for.

Just make sure when you ask to borrow something you intend to pay it back. When I was a kid we had some across the street neighbors and the lady always sent one of her daughters over to "borrow" a cup of either sugar or milk. We never got any in return. It irked me but my mother would keep on giving it to them. Once when my mother wasn't home I refused. When she found out she told me to always give it to them. The next time one of the daughters came I said, "Stop saying borrow since your mom never sends you over with a container of sugar or milk to repay your borrowing. Just say "May I have a cup of sugar/milk?" since it's a give, not a borrow. I've always been persnickety about words that way.

I want to say asking to borrow things Mr Bentley put on Jefferson's Mr Jefferson was too stingy to borrow anything to him but his wife did CBS productions Sunday nights at The Jeffersons I can sit down with my grandmother and watch it and my dad wouldn't say anything but nowadays that you would be swearing and cursing is this show was on in 2024 this is excellent comedy better than that junk they got on today😊
