3:32 look how far the pick went
Holy crap
Like a spider crawling out of the room
it didn't made it to another dimension tho
get me away from that squire hahahahaa
BRUh
That first Harley Benton was definitely the best of the bunch for me
Hell, yeah.
Bet we can afford it, jejeje
Of course it is, it's a P Bass
For me too!
I have one, it's a good bass but it's unbalanced, the neck dives a lot and hurts the shoulder, that's my only complain on it
Billy Cox doesn't use a
pick at all.
One of the reasons these sound so awesome is the $1000+ amp and cab combo it’s being played through
Results would be the same if played in a $100 amp, and still, most of those do sound pretty good regardless of the amp you put them through.
Imagine the amp as the cup and the bass as a sponge filled with water and the larger your skill level the more you can squeeze from the sponge to the cup.
The better the amp the larger the cup, the better the bass the larger the sponge and larger your skill level the more you can squeeze from the sponge to the cup.
If you can squeeze more water from the sponge than the cup can hold your amp is restricting your full potential, if there's not enough water in the sponge the bass is restricting you and if there's too much space left in the cup and there's still water in the sponge you are set and / or practice more. Cables , effects peddles and other gear can help you aswell of course.
Goes to show the amp is the more important of the pair. But as said below an inexpensive amp is still going to sound good. Technology has come so far.
No !
I own a Harley Benton PJ-74 VW. I can guaran-freakin'-tee it'll sound as good as most top brand 1000$ basses out there regardless of the amp. And it's just a great bass all around even without considering the value. 😉👍
One thing I really love about your demos is that you actually play super solid riffs instead of just the same couple stale licks reviewers will typically stick to.
Thank you so much!
I agree. Gives the instrument a proper work out. 😎
Yeah and not a slap or pop in sight! Nice to hear how the basses sound rather than how fast a thumb can slap! Great demo.
@@melvinsargeant5058 there was a tonne of slaps and pops lmao
I have an Squier Affinity Jazz Bass Lake Placid Blue color 4 string since 2016, it has served me well!!!!
The Dean headstock would be number 1 if you had to kill one of your bandmates.
I tried it, it works great. I also used it to threaten my ex.
Perfect bass for black metal
That’s why Dave Mustaine plays Dean guitars now
Varg? Is that you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦👍
I really love that you don't loose yourself in slapping the hell out of every bass like so many other bass demos do.
Really good and solid riffs with fingers and pick! Keep up the great work.
I recently bought a Bronco Bass as essentially my first bass and I love it. Small and comfy to play, sounds like a bass. I don't know what more I could need.
Anybody else notice how far away his pick landed when he was playing the bronco?
It was Davie504 warning him to get rid of his picks
Picks have come a long way.
No but manage he call the 6 pole single coil, a lipstick. Though he have a pair of proper lipsticks on the wall to his left.
Yeeted it
Not the sort of thing I like look out for 🤣
“Turquoise”(0:29). I think ya meant Tortoiseshell. Always good stuff either way though!😉👍
bahahahaha you're totally right, didn't even notice that!
It takes a real men to play a pink bass in a black metal band, respect to the tone who does that lol
I'd rather have the Nuclear Green variant of that model, to be honest.
www.thomann.de/de/dean_guitars_custom_zone_bass_ng.htm
Green Shinobi Looking forward to do that, bro.
Put on a horror clown costume and you are all set!
Oh come on ! , I really like the HB but if you make me choose what was my favorite, i tell you the Squier Affinity has it all. Good tone, good construction, good looking and good value back if you need to sell it.
I’m a guitar player learning bass and I recently got the Squier Affinity Precision bass. I love it!! I’m having a ton of fun playing James Brown and Clash licks. $229 and highly recommended!
I'm a Bass player and always find myself coming back to Squier. I currently play on the Squier he features here same finish except mine as an Indian Laurel fretboard. Think he is butt hurt over the price.
@@jeffreylarson7646 I personally like the dark to light differences with the Indian Laurel, which is funny because I ordered a custom pick made of the same wood and the fretboard looks tons darker. Something about bright colored basses with equally bright wood for the fretboard has visually displeased me. Anyways, I love my slick silver squier and half-step versions of songs sound great on it. After I fixed the intonation I can't say the difference was mind blowing, but that's probably because I've stuck with the default strings since I got it for Christmas. Did you change your strings and set it up? How much better is it?
That Dean actually sounded super bright and I like that a lot.
I have the nuclear green dean, it's fantastic. Also scared the crap out of my band mates when I brought that instead of my Ibanez.
This dude is kind of a weird duck. I thought the Dean and the Jazz were by far the best sounding. Maybe because I don't care at all about bottom end, I don't know.
It really to me had a 60's tone. lacked a little bit of sustain and punch but wasn't bad. kind of a one trick pony like the bronco.
Bright? WHERE
Personally I think if it had a musicman pickup and preamp it would be the greatest bass ever, I mean just look at it.
For the record, the B450/550 comes with active pickups if you pull the volume. It gives a far less dull sound
3:31 rare footage of a pick travelling into the infinite abyss and joining the billions of other long lost picks
I stand by the Squier Affinity Series. I owned three affinty basses and one stratocaster and they always been good to me i cant recommend them enough to someone who is starting off or on a budget like me i can get a guitar thats on par with a fender for cheap and i know its not going to fall apart on me. Good guitars i really am nervous when i buy other budget brands
I think the affinity series is great. My favorite strat I ever owned was an affinity strat. I gave it away when I got a fender strat, then ended up selling the fender to pay bills and I miss the squier more than the fender.
Them Squier affinities are no joke, ive had a few pbass from the affinity series, they where some of the best basses I've ever played, and I've played ALOT of basses in 20+ years of playing
The first harley benton bass was the best hands down!
I have a custom zone bass, all you have to do is cover it in stickers and you're set
Thank you Patrick for your honesty, we need more vids like this. Mike.
I bought the Dean Custom Zone in Green. Much better looking than the pink. So far I've enjoyed it and the tone is quite good.
I don't understand why everyone hates it so much. I'm looking for a bass and I went to guitar center and picked the green one up and loved it so much.
I really loved the Squier Jazz, infinity!!! it had a great sound!!!!! tons of variation too!
I have a Harley Benton jb75, I changed the pots and output Jack, put in a series/parallel switch and it's fucking awesome. Love it equally as much as my Fender Jazz.
I'd been debating on a bass for AGES, and actually, I have been looking at the Nuclear Green Dean for a while. It's so horribly in your face, but I LOVE the look, and hearing the the pink one now, especially back-to-back with the others? 100% getting the green now! XD It sounds the best of all of these to me.
Thanks For the review, it was really helpful. You smashed on each bass!!
I bought the Dean Zone pink bass. Swapped out the pickups for some EMG Geezer Butler pickups and it sounds AMAZING now.
Patrick, love ur vids! No BS reviews. Keep up the good work. 👍
thank you patrick , you make such a big services especially for beginners / first timers...
Patrick, u r the only one who gives the basses a proper run thru. Excellent!
Love love LOVE that Harley Benton PJ. Think I might need to treat myself.
I really love when the pick just flew away to nether realm after putting on his lap on 3:33
I used to play around with my mom’s bass on rock smith and always wanted to get serious and learn. I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of a solid pink bass and literally just bought the Dean Custom 🤣 I know you said you didn’t like the sound, but I can get over that. Especially as a beginner. I’ll probably play it until I’m ready to upgrade and then put it a display case as a badge of honor that I learned on a shitty Amazon bass. 😍🖤
Thank You for this honest review. I was considering getting a Squier Affinity Jazz Bass. I usually play guitar but I need a bass to fulfill my projects. So I guess I keep researching...
Strange on my phone the pink one sounded the best.
get a new phone :)
Harley Benton PJ definitely had the fullest sound to my ears. Wish they were around when I started playing.
The Harley Benton PJ bass sounds great! I like the Squire Bronco too. You should do a video on just inexpensive short scale basses.
nice review mate! thanks for the opinion :) That HB PJ sounds very decent indeed :)
I owned that same bronco several years ago sold it then try to buy it back it was a fun and light easy bass to play with great tone when played through several 15 in subs.
That Dean is stunning 😍
I have a Bronco, is a great choice for low budget. It's a short scale bass, I like that too. comfty and versatile.
You should advise people about shipping. Some free, the Harley B costs a extra $80. For shipping.
Really depends where u get them from
If you live in America yes, but Harley Benton isn’t really supposed to be for outside Europe
America moment
Your the first person I've ever heard saying they don't like the Squier affinity series basses
Really useful lesson, thanks.
I have the four string version of the black Harley Benton bass and it just sounds so amazing... You already assumed it would sound awesome with distortion and oh boy it does! I mean it's the only bass I have and the one I play most often but for me as a Guitarist this thing does not only sound and look great, it also plays wonderfully, it has a really thin neck and almost plays like a guitar which for me is one of the best things about this bass
I too have the 4 string of it, also it is a active bass, so not sure why you didn’t mention it nor demo it?
I love your way of playing! Really cool 😎
I put a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in my Dean Custom Zone and its AMAZING. It was my first bass and It can handle gigs even after me beating it up as a kid for 6 years.
I personally love my tr-50 it's an Ibanez from like the 80s-90s and it's sold hella cheap like $100-$170 rn, I got it from my dad who got it from a pawn shop a few years back and it honestly sounds really really good especially with the mids cranked and an overdrive or fuzz or sum, like I also have a gretch but I'd give it up in a heart beat if it meant keeping my tr-50
I got an 80’s ibanez from a pawn shop as well, it was like $80 and it was a very similar deal. Great sound with fuzz or high distortion. Those 80’s ibanez basses are something else.
I actually liked the Bronco a lot more than I expected to, but the first Harley-Benton was definitely my favorite.
Those Benton's sounded cool. I'm interested in HB's Music Man clones and the Sterling SUB (5 strings of both) if you're looking to make more cheap bass vids
I just got my HB jazz in and I absolutely love it! Also, what bass are you playing in the walk video? Thanks for all your awesome content!
the harley benton b-550 is actually the first bass i ever owned, it's really cool !
and you can get that klacky bass sound i love easily with it
I like the affinity squire, picked one up..future mods.
Why affinity sounded the best for me ?! xD
Me as well!
because you like the jazz bass sound. i like it too, but i prefer the first one, the haly benton P+J
Yamaha's TRBX and low end RBX series are pretty solid basses for the money as well, but I don't know if anything has as much value as Harley Benton does right now (maybe Agile or SX might make a sweet cheap bass as well).
I vote for the squier affinity jazz bass
I have one, and I think its a little weird that it only has one single (I think) coil pickup, and it sounds pretty thin. It honestly comes down to your taste, but I cannot change your opinion, so if you like it, good for you.
@@sj3802 sure you are not confusing it with the Bronco? the affinity jazz has two J pickups
@@sj3802 the affinity jazz is the bass on minute 7... you dont know what you have bro ?
I have one that looks just like what Patrick has in the video. I don't understand his bias against that model. Mine plays great, has good output, almost no hum from either single coil soloed, good construction, nice weight distribution, and stable tuners. Why the hate? From the best prices I can find online, it's only $44 USD more than the HB that he liked at the beginning of the vid. And alot of why he seemed to like that was color combination.
Great vid! It's always cool to see bassists like you recommending real budget instruments (not these "it's only 450 bugs" price range) :-)
I just can confirm your opinion bout the Dean. I bought an Explorer-shaped Dean (Metalman-Series) years ago and damn, it's looking so awesome, but this sound...if I wanna have an instrument sounding this high, I'd take a cheap guitar xD ...so, in the end, it stays in it's case because I don't have any use for it (maybe someday in a punk band xD)
If I would buy a new bass I'd definitely go for the B-450 QTB. It's the same as the B-550 but 4-string and with a black/red finish - a beast of a bass for a very affordable price.
My #1 bass is a 93 Fender PJ and of course I love it but I would never go for a Squire Bass. If it goes to budget instruments I'd prefer and recommend Harley Benton in any case.
I have a few dean basses but not this one. I will be ordering it soon and for me they sound amazing. I use plenty of other brands but i love these cheap little deans.
The PJ74 is quite a marvel (I just uploaded a review in my channel), but the pink bass sounds very good!!!
It's always going to be the Jazz for me. I did love the sound of the Benton basses, though.
The Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special is also a very safe buy in this range. When people ask me what to get as a starter bass, I also recommend it.
p. body Roger Waters plays one of those I think
I had a Dean Zone and dropped in a Dimarzio 123 and it honked- I had no problem playing it at gigs--It was green so it got used on St Patties day every year.
im getting the pink one! tbh i thought the light but rich sound to it sounded heavenly 🧑🏼💻
9:49 yes please play that riff on every guitar please.
Yeah, riffing on a bass guitar usually makes groove bass players change the channel.
All bass demos are normally great except 5 string ones.
Not only was this brilliant but he played the 5 string super well! Not over the top but also didn't neglect the B!
I’d like to see one of my favorite rock bands use a Squier Bronco Bass on one of their future albums.
I actually have the HB Progressive series B-450 and I bought it for 110 Eur as a B stock including a gig bag. My intention was to have it for a while and get a better one but I never needed another one. The stock strings and tuning keys were s..t, but other than that it's a great instrument. I upgraded the tuning keys to Gotoh. It's perfect like that.
I'd love to hear (no pun intended) your take on the Yamaha TRBX line. Specifically, I have a TRBX204 I bought new earlier this year for $200 (they list at $280) on a Guitar Center sale. Needed a bit of a set up (no surprise there), but otherwise it's been solid for me so far. My first bass! (Been playing guitar for decades, though.) I have my eye on an American Player P-Bass next.
Now that you mentioned it, you should review the Squier CVs and VM Models of Basses Now.
in my opinion the best entry levels are the Squier Jazz and Precision
The pink one is actually good i tried it irl
Those Squiers actually surprised me.
What are your thoughts on the Squier VM Jaguar w/ a single humbucker? I recently acquired one and am on the fence about it. Love the jag bass body, but might mod the heck out of it to be usable.. or just sell..
Affinity tele has my one of my top two favorite single coil pickups of all time (the neck one)
The good thing about the Squier affinity over the vintage modified and the classic vibe is that they have Adler wood body's like the more expensive fenders. I mean to get one and swap the body over to my vm then making an Alder bodied vintage modified.
nice thank you
i love Cort Basses, inexpensive & good
I have a giant veiny“toner” for this guy and his reviews.
😐
I’m surprised the Ibanez gsr200 isn’t on here. That was my first bass and after 10 years of playing, it sounds soooo good!
4:10 nice pun!
The Ibanez Talman series is pretty good. As long as you can find a brand new one, or test one that's not been banged up. I got mine for $179, and its a nice bass.
I have a Squier VM Jaguar bass. I've had it for years and it's my go to bass. For the price you can't beat it.
I want one of those, but the Harley Benton's keep screaming to me at those prices.
@@The_Fat_Turtle Yeah I traded an old Laguna bass for it.
Hello Patrick, the first one is the best, hands off.
I must add a comment here, the Dean bass I bought new, stuck on rotosounds and it sings! The bass in the demo suffers from factory strings and no set up-I have played bass for 25 years and the feel and tone from this thin is fantastic
Hello. For this video / demo have you made any component changes or improvements in the Harley Benton PJ-74 VW model, or is the bass as it comes from Thomman with the factory components? .Thank you great comparison
I have the 5 string Affinity Squier and it sounds terrific. A little too quick with the verdict? I sometimes use a pick for that forward punch if the song needs it. If done well, it's fine. Too many here may not understand....
I got an ibanez talman for $250 (im left handed) its been pretty good to me so far
My first and only bass is a nuclear green dean custom zone and i love it
That pink one at the end seemed like it needed a Jazz pickup added
I would love a standalone review on the b550 as im in the market from one but also so we can hear it with fresher strings and more play with the eq n stuff
Can you give us some "Intel" about the new 2019 Squier CV lineup?...
Test some J's... some P's...
Best of both worlds...SOME PJS!
Some Jaguars
Did you have any of them setup or change the strings before you played them, or are they straight out of the box.
The first Harley Benton was great. ❤️🎸🎵
Honestly, the affinity series is decent, I wouldn't recommend gigging one (excluding the 5-string jazz), but they're excellent for early days/writing etc
3:33 YALL WHEN HE DROPPED THAT PICK IT WAS LIKE IM OUT OF HERE
I saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought they had roaches in the studio. had to rewind the video for another look
Love Ur playing.
I got a store demo Squier VM, PJ bass for $250. I really like it & find myself gravitating to it more & more. Pleasantly surprised with the quality & sound. All I did was replace the strings, but that’s a given in this price range. Yeah, the Affinity line is just not worth fooling with.
Took a bronco on japan tour, took neck off so i could take it in my suitcases, superb thing, did you know the pickup is squire strat pickup under plain cover.
@Chris Greene Bristol 70s punk band the stingrays
I have that exact Dean bass, except in Nuclear Green color. I have struggled to get a fat tone out of it, no matter what I do. The P-bass pickups on my Fender PJ sound fatter than the Dean. But the Dean was my first bass and was my main for a very long time.
FINALLY YOU PLAY THE DEAN
I own the dean c zone. I dropped a Seymour Duncan quarter pounder in it, set it up, and sanded the rough parts. It is now the greatest bass anyone has ever played. It's Chinese, china is a big country, sometimes they build quality.
For me the Ibanez GSR200 with the preamp is a solid contender in this price range.. just run the preamp at half and adjust them pickups to taste :)
