    Fun Fact: One of Mogami’s torpedoes sunk the transport carrying General Hitoshi Imamura, the Commanding General of the Java Invasion Force. General Imamura swam to Java and, stark naked, was wringing his clothes out when his Chief of Staff walked up. The staff officer saluted and congratulated General Imamura on “a most successful landing.”

    Oh sweet, furry boat man has returned!
    Are you planning on reclaiming your throne as the best War Thunder naval UA-camr or will you just be doing history videos? Either way, this video is on par with, or dare I say, even better than Drachinifel's work, great job.

      I really doubt I'll ever return to WT; I do plan to, within a month or so, stream WT NF for 1-3h and see how it feels now, but I can already predict from keeping up with it that I won't be returning. From now on my goal is to do historic content on the YT channel, trying to make highly edited and refined videos, while doing whatever I feel like on my Twitch. Both have been inactive for a while though, so it'll take me some time to get back up to speed.

    27:30 I think this isn't completely fair of a statement: the Japanese did experience some decent success with long-range torpedo salvoes during the opening of the Pacific War, especially in night engagements where the USN had attempted to engage with gunnery (without much success in night-fighting technique); once the USN started respecting torpedo attack in nighttime engagements (and also started including radar into the tactical picture, culminating with the advent of the Combat Information Center and radar-directed gunnery), their efficacy dropped massively (resulting in the lack of success in the later portions of the war).

    • @aidan11162
      @aidan11162 2 роки тому

      Was it worth the overall cost though? Personably I don’t think so. I mean the greatest success they ever had with a torpedo attack was an epic own goal.

    • @zanaduz2018
      @zanaduz2018 2 роки тому +4

      @@aidan11162 One must also keep in mind the implicit assumptions that existed during its design and construction phases that shaped how it was intended to be utilized (and thus, what it would end up equipped with).
      The Japanese “Kantai Kessen” battle doctrine implied that the war with the US Navy would be a short, decisive war decided by a few pitched actions, where the Pacific Fleet (steaming hard to relieve the Philippine garrison) would be attrited by torpedo night actions during the long voyage before being destroyed in a single decisive engagement (presumably off the east coasts of the Phillipines).
      Cruisers (such as the Mogamis) would assist the destroyers in these torpedo actions by providing heavier firepower to help destroy the Pacific Fleet’s screening vessels before adding their own torpedo firepower in attacks against the US battle line. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the Pacific War didn’t pan out nearly in the way they had planned; the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor incensed American sensibilities and committed the Japanese to a long attritional war for which their ships (and economy) were far less suited.
      Another major complicating factor is the rise of naval aviation as the decisive arm of naval warfare; one for which the Kantai Kessen had not adapted until far too late. Battleship admirals were recalcitrant about giving up their primacy in naval planning until well after carrier actions (at Coral Sea, Midway and the Marianas) had crippled the Japanese capability to respond in kind.

    Then looked back at your previous content and have to say that your experience with WT Naval is very disappointing as you seemed to really enjoy naval warfare games. And as a person who goes back to Great Naval Battles and Fighting Steel games I can understand your dissatisfaction at the constant changes (I play WoW but have different problems than what you explained, but still problems).

    hello im new to naval and naval seems fun game beside for sl maker, i have question to you, do rocket from plane(lets say br 4.3-5.7) effective to ship like destroyer or light cruiser? i have plan to research fw-190 with rocket because research for bomber is taking too long for me, thx

    • @flippedstug9517
      @flippedstug9517  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't played WT NF in a year and have no intent to return to it, so I'm not up to date on the current damage models. I'd guess the Fw-190's WfrGn 21's wouldn't do much damage since they're not much bigger than some of the shells ships will already be getting hit with and surviving, so you'd need to step up to anti-ship rockets like Tiny Tims or Red Angels.

      @@flippedstug9517 ahh okay2, 1 more, do you know anti ship rocket on germany tech tree (except high tier jets)? if no i guess i will research torpedo plane then, thanks

    • @flippedstug9517
      @flippedstug9517  2 роки тому

      Germany doesn't have any anti-ship rockets, and their torpedoes are pretty weak. Their airforce wasn't really geared for anti-ship combat. The best offerings they have for killing ships are medium bombers, like the Ju-288 or bomber-variant Do-217's with quad 1000kg's, though those can be hard to hit smaller vessels with.

    I think is fair to say the kumamo had taken one of the worst beatings among all the cruisers in WW2 and it actually had taken more damage then some other battleships as well. Moreover kumamo crew must have been very frustrated for having their bow got blown off twice in one month though I read some documents about the bow that was repaired was actually made of coconuts and trees from the island? And even more sad and desperate to her was it had been abandoned by her allies as well on her way to the harbour for emergency repairs though she did managed to get back and she actually had ran out of all of her AA ammunition in the harbour but was later being given some from another heavy cruiser (forgot the cruiser name) to even be able to set sail again but just to get sunk by another air strike from America

    • @flippedstug9517
      @flippedstug9517  2 роки тому +1

      I wish that coconut-and-tree thing had come up in my sources, but sadly lots of the Japanese documentation for that time of the war is awful. If they did, any record of it is probably gone forever. I wouldn't be surprised, though; America did it with some CA's, and it was pretty good at keeping the ship afloat until it could get to port.

    Is that real that Mogami 155mm guns worked as AA guns as well due the special elevation? Also she used to be equipped with 40mm AA guns? This class got a lot of modifications

    • @flippedstug9517
      @flippedstug9517  2 роки тому +3

      On paper, the 155mm could be used as an anti-air gun. In practice, with it's low rate of fire and having no characteristics lending themselves particularly well to AA duties, it's doubtful any of the 155's in service on any vessel every hit an aircraft. As far as 40mm's go, none of the sources I read through ever mentioned a Mogami ship recieving any, so probably not.

    There are treaties on how many vessels, size of guns, and what they are allowed to construct? Really?

  • @ifga16
    @ifga16 2 роки тому

    Nice presentation on the Mogamis. Just a few minor corrections. First, although technically the same, a ship's weight is displacement of water. For example, my ship displaced 45,000 tons of water and 58,000 tons fully loaded. Second is that a turret rests on a barbette which is an armored tube. Gun mounts do not have barbettes. Small 5 inch and smaller popguns may have armored shells but are still mounts. My shop was on port side second deck next to the barbette of turret two. The 5 inch gun mounts were several frames aft and up. The use of relevant film of the ships is a relief. I'm not happy with the pseudo historians who throw in images of modern ships and planes when talking about WWII.
