Valve Cover Gasket Replacement - Nissan Altima 2003 2.5 SL
Engine oil inside the spark plug well is a fairly common issue due to leaking spark plug tube seals. This can be a reason for cylinder misfire. OBD Codes: P1320 and/or P0300/ P0301/ P0302/ P0303/ P304 / P0305 / P0306 / P0307 / P0308. When spark plug well gasket wears out and starts leaking, engine oil gets inside the spark plug well and eventually leads to cylinder misfire.

This was exactly what I was looking for. Your video has clear narration, effective visuals and easy to follow directions. I really appreciate you making video, just saved me a trip to the mechanic.
My 2003 Altima was facing the same issue - oil leaking into the first cylinder (just like the video!), causing it to misfire. The clear instructions from this video allowed me to replace the valve cover gasket with no fuss or muss. And I am not a "car guy" who does this type of thing much. I really appreciate Temachok for putting this video together - much appreciated!!!!
Thanks!
BTW, I'm not a "car guy" either!
How much did this cost you
thank you so much very thorough explanation answered a lot of my questions that other videos did not!
Perfect video for my car. Mine is a 2005, but has this exact issue. I will have to gather all the parts, including replacement spark plugs. This was really neglected when I bought it. It was running great until last week when this miss-firing issue started. I was assuming that the spark plugs just needed changing, but when I took one of the coils off and seen the oil in the well, then I knew I had a much bigger issue. Thank you for making this video. I seen your other video on how to clean out the oil from the wells and this one popped up after it was finished.
Thanks Victor for taking the time and putting this video together, very well done! I am planning to replace the gasket on my Altima 2000, took it to a Nissan repair place about 5 months ago, and the thing is leaking again, so much for their piece of sh*t service!
Thanx alot for the video. Clear, concise, and direct to the point without unneeded chatting. that is how tutorials should be.
mohammad rahman, thank you! I appreciate your feedback!
Oh, how I wish it was this simple with my car, haha! I just watched this for the heck of it but I have an 04 Saturn L300...a car that the manufacturer's decided to tuck half the spark plugs kind of deep (gotta remove gas lines and other things). *sigh* So, I'm watching a little bit of everyone's videos to help me out since few videos feature my car :) Thank you for this!
I came looking for info on replacing the valve covers on my 05 Maxima but still chose to watch this. This was by far one of the best and most informative videos ever. Easy and clear instructions. Thanks for making it.
Thank you! I really appreciate grateful people!
Wish you lived in Georgia or could make a video on doing valve covers for the 05 Maxima! It's going to be harder because there are 2...the rear is hard to get to
Yea, working on 6-cylinder engines is a lot more challenging...
When I was doing mine, I also coldn't find much info in how it's done. What really helped me was official Nissan repairs manual. It's good to have it if you like repairing most of the problems by yourself.
Something like this: "www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dp051-20&keywords=2005 Maxima repairs manual&index=aps&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=xm2&linkId=3f02a990214c22e8c65127c092dd577c"
Temachok do u mean that I can use the same old gasket cover, but clean it very well?
Im gonna try to do this on my car this weekend. Best video I have seen on this.
GREAT VIDEO. Saved me time & money. Thank you for taking the time to do this!
My pleasure!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video, it was very helpful.
Great Video! Perfect pace and perfect instruction. You rock. Thank you....probably saved me hours of work.
appreciate the post/video. I watched a few on the same subject and your's was the most informative.
This video was very informative and extremely well made. I have a Nissan Altima 2002 with the same issue. You made this repair look very simple. Thank you for taking the time to create a superior video with which to follow along.

+Krystyn Leigh Banks thats true it is informative thanks
+Sathish thati
Thank you!
someone told me that i will need to reset the timing after doing this. is that true?
abdulrazack oketona not one bit!
Found out that my valve cover gasket is leaking oil into my crankshaft sensor, will be attempting this fix. Appreciate the video upload
Excellent step-by-step guide.
Thanks! I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra but this gave me enough info to get it done.
Thank you, this video was very helpful, trying to help my son fix his car. With minimal cost.
Awesome!
AWESOME, thorough tutorial. I just had my valve cover replacement which cost me a whopping 350.00 from a mechanic and was just curious how detailed it was and if it was worth that kind of money....Should have seen this video, might have tried it myself.
May be I should change my career... Good money for 1-hour job...
A clean, no nonsense video. Well done!
Thanks.
Great video. I had oil all over one of my spark plugs. I need need to do this. May get the new valve cover painted for bling
DAMN!!!! This guy has the fastest fingers I have EVER seen and I am 66 yrs old!!
Its fast forward Larry
Dude... AWESOME. This is how DIY car repair videos should be. I'm sure I can do this job on my Nissan 200sx having watched this. And your English is great, too!
Thanks, monkeyking617 Nice ride!!!
you are the best man
thank you for your time to show how its done my x trail needs the same ..cheers ..
My pleasure!
this was awesome thank you soooo much. now able to do this with confidence..
Awesome video. I think I can tackle this on my wife's car. Thank you!
+Dubya “Vbp6us” Aaych
Yes, pretty easy to do on this generatopion with 4 cylinders.
We’ll presented. You convinced me to use the silicone sealer as well.
Thanks dude, you just saved me a bunch of money!
Thank you so much. Have an 02 altima and noticed oil around the valve cover (outside of engine). Had a flashing SES light while driving causing major missfires. Removed the ignition coils and two sparkplug was filled with oiled. The gasket seal and spark plug tube seals are both bad. Now i know its a job i can do myself.
where did u get spark plug tube seal
+justin williams the spark plug tube seals are embedded into the valve cover and can't purchase them separately. If you have bad tube seals you need to get a new valve cover.
Thanks that suck
Awesome video, Very detailed and informative. I have a 2005 Nissan Altima with the same problem.
Thanks!
Great instructional video! I just bought an Altima and need to do that to mine.
Glad it helped! 😃
Hey thanks for the informative video. Sad that I found it after I ran into a problem. So, think I let some of the oil get inside the valve while taking out the spark plug? How much oil is okay for that to happen and is there a way to fix it after it has happened?
speaking of the coolant I do not see any of those symptoms thank you!!!
+lalo Miranda
Check overflow coolant tank. Mine started simply falling apart from age. Platic pieces were falling off right inside the tank. I had to completely replace it.
thanks for the vid. I learned a lot today. not saying that I will do it myself but at least I know what the mechanic is doing
Well done. I appreciate you posting this. I am in the process of replacing my gasket. Its a shame that the spark plug gaskets can not be replaced seperately.
Thanks again for that great tutorial..bravo.
I agree - very disappointing.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it helps!
This is what I wanted he had video explained and told what ratchet u need more of this guy
Thanks!
great video this helped me out a lot as I was able to do it myself and save money thank you victor
***** Thanks! Tha's great!
That's the best way to seal the value cover 👌
Thank you so much Victor
Thanks will save me time. Very helpful

My pleasure! Good luck.
Very informative... Love how you were detailed.
Great video. Very informative.

Thanks for the video very helpfull . I went to change my spark plug on my 05 altima and also found oil in my two left spark plugs .is it the gasket you show us on the video ?
Awesome video ,,,really helpful Thanks for posting this video
Thanks!
Buen Video muy clara explicacion ,....

Great information on valve cover bro man .
Thanks!
i have to say its funny watching your fingers move fast lol but it is very informative.
Thank You for the video.

Thanks for a great VDO
+Moo Sakda
Thanks!
Very well presented.
Fantastic video. Very clear.
Thank you!
Hi. Thanks for your video. I also had the exact same problem of oil leaking in the same cylinder as yours. When oil is leaking in the cylinder, do I also have to replace the 4 tube seals? There also seems to be 4 metal rings (grommets I think they are called) where your tube seals are. Do they also have to be replaced as well, with the tube seals?
Christian Greenhill
Yes, you definately need to replace seals.
Regarding metal rings - are inside the seals. When seals start falling apart, that's when you start seeing those metal rings.
Great video. Thank you
Excellent. I'm going to do this on my Sentra Spec V tomorrow.
Let me know if it's the same engine. I'll make a note in discription if it's the same process.
Temachok Yes, it is. The same process works on any Sentra with the 2.5L engine from 02-06.
Thanks its really good video!!!!
+jagdish bhoir
Thank you!
Great video
Thnks!
You forgot to mention there is a sequence to follow when you loosen the valve cover screws the first time. This is otherwise an excellent video. Great work!
I actually was gonna say that, but then I noticed they don't say anything about it in the repair manual. It's not essential since we are replacing both valve cover and the gasket, cuz you don't have to worry about damaging them.
Thank you very much for the great video! It is very clear and easy to follow.
One question: where can I find the manufacturer-recommended torque values for the cover bolts?
You can buy official Nissan repair manual on eBay for about $6 for your specific year and model.
Hi, I am working on my daughters 03 altima, I did not notice oil in the well until after pulling the plug, stupid question, oil ran in to the cylinder on top of the piston, any worries? This should seep past the rings back into the engine correct. Thanks for the help
I had this same issue. And would like to know if it would cause damage to my engine
very nice...
thanks a lot
Danko for nice and easy Demonstration 😊
👊🏻
Thank you for the great video. One question I have is on your torque chart you listed a final torque value between 65-82 in-lbs. Did you torque the bolts to the maximum value, or somewhere in between the values? Thanks again for the awesome video.
Its up to you. Anywhere in between is good. I usually like to torque it to the max (82 in this case). 75 I think is safe place. Then drive your car for couple days and retorque, as gasket may shrink a bit after heating/cooling.
well done video sir! I will be fixing myself thanks to your video. One question though: what did you mean at the end, after you had tightened up the bolts, about it being done in 2 steps? Thanks!
Don't tighten them all the way in right away.
First tighten them all to the first spec, then finish tightening all the way. This is done to prevent overtightening on any one side when gasket gets misplaced or warped.
Just what I was looking for thank you!
Can you help please. I found oils all over the agien. But I don't know the came from. And the service light came up....and the car still.work good
thanks for the assists
Excellent video.
MrRealtorJim
Thank you!
great video
Nice, really helpful
👌🏻
I'm going to do this on my daughters 2004 nissan maxima, because I can see the gasket is hanging out on one of the curved corners, on the left front side and is leaking oil. Hopefully I do the job right and not end up with my fingers stuck together lol.
Got the same car (2.5 S), bought a year ago today actually. turned the car on the other day and revs were kinda low and there was shaking to it. could hear popping coming from exhaust. Put a scanner to it and said 'P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected' and the drivers side spark plug had what i believe to be oil on it. wasn't exactly covered, but it was wet. Kinda looked like the tube side had oil on it as well. No smoke as of yet. I'm really hoping that this would be the fix, but don't want to jump to any conclusions. Any suggestions?
thank you great job
Thanks!
Thank you so much. I just got a misfire error and went to change the spark plug and discovered my entire well filed with oil. Looks like I'm the weekend mechanic now
+Donald Hughes
Thanks!
Good luck and enjoy!
All done. Great video! I just need to find a torque wrench - any advice? Total cost < $200
You can either buy one or use "rent for free" program at your local Advance AutoParts.
Thank you
No problem!
Wonderful!
do i have to replace the spark plug tube oil seal and oring which i have shown on 3.44 is a circular parts of oil seal
+kris mark
No. You can't replace it. It comes with valve cover.
Thank you for not using "Heavy Metal" sound in the background! I've seen glue (in spray form) applied to gasket, is it necessary ?
+Sid G.
:) No heavy metal...
Official Nissan repair manual doesn't say it's required.
great video, thanks for posting it, I am a going to try it on my 95 Altima, it looks a little different under the hood but pretty much the same set up, I noticed valve gasket started leaking oil all over my engine.
How did it go? Any different from how it's done on my model?
I have been searching online to find the part. So far I have found 2 places that have it, this week I am going to order it and give it a try. My engine is the 2.4 L, pretty much the same Altima engine for the 92-99 model years. I believe your engine is slightly different but the same when it comes to the gasket. Thanks for asking. I appreciate that. I will let you know how it goes when I do it.
Yours is probably doesn't require valve cover to be replaced. You'll only need to get the gasket and o-rings. On mine o-rings are imbedded in valve cover and this is $140 extra right there. For you it should be only around $20 for parts.
Thanks much for the video, I do appreciate that you also posted the torque specs.
Is it possible for you to post one for 2006-2015 Nissan Frontier and also how to change the tappet seals ( valve stem seals ).
When I was doing mine, I bought repairs manual digital download. It had all instructions and torque specs.
Unfortunately, I don't have a repair manual for your car, it was only for 2007 Altima.
But if you do a lot of DIY repairs, you can find a repair manual for your specific car here:
shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=752645&u=1685674&m=49176&urllink=&afftrack=
Oh man this looks so much easier than on my 350z with the longitudinal V6... got the whole thing apart and I’m afraid of pinching the gasket on something because it’s tight as fuck in that bay with all the wiring harnesses, fuel lines etc
Nice video 10/10 👌
Thank you Sir!
Video well done ..
after removing the engine cover but befor you remove the coil on plugs if you can and you have it use compressed air to clean all around to remove all dust and dirt
How did the gasket maker hold up on the spark plug tube seals?
Well done
Thanks!
Thanks
Does the new valve cover come with the 0 gaskets the ones around the small holes where the sparkplugs go?
Yes, they are built into the valve cover.
This looks fun. I’m dreading changing my bmw gasket smh.
Yeah, this was pretty enjoying and rewarding repair!
Nice job and great editing!, mine is leaking next to Thermostat housing (2001 Chevy Metro LSI - but is oil so...
I replaced With kit but following stupid OEM directions per Costless employee advice, finding out hard way, it slow leaks to outside EVEN MORE!
Re-doing Permatex Hi-Temp (650F) Gasket Sealant (Red).
I liked the way you smeared it after applying to 2nd bottom-engine block, and I will do the same.
Update: So sealant went great but wasn't the Oil Leak problem, because it's still leaking and more apparent now. It's leaking from outside the valve area down from underneath (Magnetivity/Gravity) directly from highest area...the Sensor directly ABOVE the Thermostat Housing; catching onto the bolt-on metal ledge of Thermostat area. Don't know the exact name but EXACT problem and pic can be found on the Blog covering the problem..... geometroforum.com/thermostat-housing-leak-t30186.html
Thanks!
It was my oil sensor O-Ring area seal basically exactly like bad seals in vid but bigger ...costless tried to match it but just couldn’t and that SEAL ONLY COMES IN $75 entire engine seal & gasket kit for rebuilds, breaking-down entire engine block, A different long time experienced employee this time said he would trust Permatex high-temp sealant over a new OEM RUBBERY SEAL NOT made for long-term anyway...I agreed, made a heavy duty fat seal squeezed into round groove, stopped leak, headed to Hollywood south driving 1,000 miles 10-days ago, and still running strong!
Nice!
thanks a lot it was helpfull
Yanal Sharayha
THE THE OTHER HAND,
good video ... i have misfire cylinder #3 .. after i removed the sparks plug i notice some oil at the botton end inside spark plug tube #3 . ... what's the name of the tool you used to tide those volts back on the valve cover ?? ..
pascaljose5010 Torque wrench.
Yes. It is possible to replace the well seals on the valve cover. The auto parts store sells the kits. You gave to use a hole saw 1 3/4 to remove the old ones. I have done that. You make a wood jig with the hole then you center it to the seal. Very easy. The new seals are $8 bucks a kit.
Thank you sir!
My pleasure!
