    I actually quite like the idea of a laptop that I can plug into a water cooler that I keep at my desk for some extra performance. I don't really game on the go, so it makes perfect sense. However, I will probably wait for a second iteration

    Maybe you could implement this design into a laptop stand? All you would do is have a thermally conductive contact on the back of your laptop that you set down, and the cooling block is spring-loaded on the stand to make full contact with the laptop. I am actually pretty interested in this idea, considering that I'm someone who uses my laptop as a PC at home.

      They make cheap "reusable" thermal pads also which would be the perfect use for them. Even if you used 1 every time you had to set it up it would be fairly cheap and not so messy. Idk why I'm even looking at watercooling a laptop because the temps on mine are already pretty good.

    This is really cool. It reminds me of what would be needed to do when getting an m.2 nvme external GPU connector to install in an HP Ryzen 3 laptop that doesn't have a thunderbolt port. Great video, thanks!

    So I've been thinking about this concept ever since the latest ltt video came out about it, the main issue was that water was left behind in the whole thing so I was thinking what if you keep all of the water-cooling external, but in a way that you can quickly "plug" the laptop into a laptop stand or something. Only issue is that there isn't really a way to connect the waterblock and the heatsink together without using thermal paste and that isn't really all that fast.

      @UrdnotAkongo 2 роки тому +1

      Actually doing something similar like this right now. Cut up the bottom plate of the laptop so it'll have a hatch that you could open and close. The laptop stand has an AIO cooler where the pump is suspended facing upwards so the copper is exposed, maybe using bungee cords or rubber bands. Open laptop hatch, place laptop on the stand, and the connection is made where the tension from the rubber bands will push the pump up against the laptop heatsinks. There's enough space to put 2 pumps side by side. If using a 360mm AIO in a push-pull, you can have 12 fans cooling the sucker. Make it into an enclosure so it will be more of a "docking tower." Will have to use thermal pads so there's no "sticky" connection and will conform to all the uneven surfaces. If not using it, just take the laptop off, close the hatch and it's back to a regular laptop.

    try a peristaltic pump, often found in aircon condensers. much less noise.

  • @-_-._.-.
    @-_-._.-. 2 роки тому +6

    looks like the laptop got power throttled, which explains why you don't see much difference in the performance.
    if you hack the bios to unlock the power limit it might give you much higher performance because it has lots of thermal headroom to work with after you water cooled the laptop.

    Hey man, excellent work. I've been wanting to do that for a long time. Have you thought of adding peltier cooling to the system. And possibly make it smaller? As small as those thermoelectric cooling devices that latch behind phones.

    I have an old HP laptop Dv7 and the problem with CPU in the DV 6 and 7 series is they always run 100% even on small load so you hit 80-90 c. Fast and it start to bottleneck and I think a set up like that could help it along fast.

    I had the same idea but decided against because of the relative high complexity and the low performance boost

    • @CarterHurd
      @CarterHurd  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I did it knowing that it would be complex for a low boost: I just wanted to try to see for myself.
      I think that for a higher performing thin gaming laptop the boost would have been bigger: something that is more thermally constrained.

    Interesting video. I've been thinking to modify my Lenovo Y740 in the near future and I'm not sure yet that how it will turnout. I've the BIOS version that allows you to overclock the device and I was thinking if I should turn it as a desktop pc (few cool projects on the internet) and add watercooling on it. Your approach was interesting to watch, I would have the portability of the PC with this sort of solution. And yes, "you should not do this" :D I might.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @CarterHurd
      @CarterHurd  2 роки тому

      Maybe, depends on how over designed the phone cooler is. A phone needs to dissipate less than 5 watts of heat, while a gaming laptop has over 100 watts to dissipate when running full-bore.
      Might be something I could test tho, given that they are so cheap
