I can't believe that I strongly prefer this over the original laptop. I figured I'd regret this whole thing... but it's more compact on a desk, I have better posture when using it due to the higher display position, the secondary display is useful, and the mechanical keyboard + mouse is much better than the laptop input devices.
Another clever deck
I like the concept as a substitute of an old electric typewriter, it resembles me a bit the Selectric II by IBM, it would be very interesting using the tob screen for writing with an inmersive softwar as IA writer while having the bottom screen for resourcing stuff. I use my iPad for that purpose but unfortunatelly I do not have a mechanicak keyboard paired with it and also don't have a secondary botton screen, so making reseaching while writting it is a pain on the ass. I also though on the dual display zen book... but the keyboard ergonomics seems not very conffortable.
It looks like a lapotop and a typewiter had a lovechild.
I love it!
Wow awesome job 👏
Bro please start a startup or something or at least get this thing patented... U gonna make a lot of respect n money
At first, I was skeptical about the setup with just one wide monitor. But the moment you popped the external monitor on top of the smaller one I was sold. This looks really like a solid build and I could see myself using that if it were a commercially available product.
Shit up and take my money.
Thought the same thing
Kopy
It is a product.
@@anshjain3169 It is not, some laptops get close to it but none have a removable upper monitor and a built in mechanical keyboard, nor does any commercially available laptop have the same retro-cyberpunk vibes and aesthetics to it
i love how it looks like what people in the past imagine what future tech would look like
I was just thinking something similar!
lmao wtf you mean future tech, future tech there will be just a huge as monitor with a build in PC . no one is using that tiny ass screen
@@jpppptrade those are already made, but sadly not for purposes of gaming, more for casual/work use. a family member of mine owns one, and it runs 10x slower than my oldest currently owned pc. gonna be a while sadly
@@kanaut oh yea you are right and it will be more commen in the future, but we need really good hardware to achieve that.
@@jpppptrade i don’t completely believe that actually, i think it’s possible today with the right design and that’s all. people have built desks that are pc cases, so someone can design something with a special 1080p display with just a mid tower pc case, just a bit fatter to accommodate for the screen ofc
I knew the zenbook duo was a actually useful, but seeing someone basically take it and make it into a desktop version is super awesome
How it was useful?
It was overpriced, has poor keyboard and trackpad, performs poor, wasnt really robust....
@@harrison00xXx You're right. It has a lot of faults but it has two displays that is useful. The zenbook duo is practical for people who want dual imtegrated screens and have MONEY TO BURN for comfort but can't make it themselves as they don't know how to and don't bother or find it risky
@@incog2678 Well for the premium of the zen book you basically get a MacBook Air or Pro and a previous gen iPad and have basically 2 AWESOME screens and the iPad one also a good touchscreen.
Where you have to pay even more premium if you wish that you have on both screens, MacBook Pro aswell as iPad a Mini LED screen.
@@incog2678 Only take for example my setup... for the price of a lower tier Zenbook I got already years ago a pretty nice HP Omen 17 with 150W RTX 2080 (basically as fast as a mobile RTX 3070!)
I absolutely don't get the point of these devices, ofc they try something different, but cmon, Apple really made many nice different things, but Microsoft is pretty bad at "thinking different"
Apparently it's still a fully functioning portable with the battery still inside of it. He says the battery life hasn't really changed
Sounds great. As a software engineer who works exclusively on the terminal I am pretty sure I could get by but it would not be an ideal machine. Overpowered hardware with an underpowered display. I approve of the keyboard.
This thing looks absolutely sick, I was really digging it with that little wide screen monitor then you popped the second monitor on and I fell in love. Totally love the futuristic/apocalyptic and custom/salvaged look.
Thanks!
@@CarterHurd i'll buy it for 6,000
Feel free to IM or email (see website for address) me an offer. It's super janky though, you'd be buying something with no easily accessible headphone jack (that's located on the display driver board in the back), a thermal-epoxied heat sync, a chassis made of 3D printed parts glued together, poor clearance around the USB A and C ports, and a display that's been double-stick-taped on.... I feel like it's worth more to me than anyone would want to buy it for.
People keep saying they want to buy it, but they want to buy a product like this. not a prototype....
@@CarterHurd dude doesn't have 6k anyways, but A+ for transparency.
@@CarterHurd make it. sell it. we will buy.
in all seriousness though, I jut want you to do a closeup tutorial on how you wired he power.
Seriously love the aesthetic of this. The functionality looks great too. If that external monitor is a tablet, honestly that is freaking phenomenal.
Wow, looks like a niche that needs to be filled! I'm talking about 2 things here - using the half screen as a second monitor as well as this should-be consumer item as a whole. Well done!
the small wide monitor would be perfect as a message board, selecting music, using a mixer, or if you were streaming to see chat. it has so many cool applications
Just perfect dude, old school and futuristic at the same time. Great idea
This is brilliant. Even without the ultra-ultrawide screen and just a fixed regular screen, this would be a great all-in-one PC design
I could see this being a really really advanced universal remote that controls your whole house including TV's and music so you can use the thing itself or any other output device in the house.
I could actually see the design, even with just the single short ultrawide screen, being completely useful for a "riced" Linux build. Most of those configurations are completely keyboard driven, so that would allow the system to be almost completely portable.
Perfect Vim setup, it's just missing a crusty ThinkPad touchpad as a glorified wrist rest
This is so sick. I could definitely use something like that in my living room setup.
This is super cool, the slide in monitor is dope. Its like a portable desktop
Well I have a bunch of tech cause I like it, not because I need it most of the time.
This looks like something id want. Good job.
So I really like this build, if it was mine, I would have gone with the 3d printed parts in a non translucent form factor and would have sanded and filled the irregularities, and then painted the exterior black, then dry brushed some gold/copper/silver on with some green, to create a verdigris/textured look of very old metal. I've always wanted to build a "500 years after the collapse, distressed cyberdeck" build. If I could it would actually have a lot of real copper and metal parts. The janky exposed parts look awesome, and I would have gone all in on that look. It should be solid, like it's survived and will continue to survive a while, but also look like it was heavily used. Perhaps I'd even spray bomb that keyboard just masking the keycaps.
just discovered your channel. I've always wanted to do shit like this. Gonna watch all ur vids now
The tough compromise would be ease of transportability; which is one of the highlights with a traditional laptop. It's foldable at a hinge and vertical real-estate when closed is small. Still an amazing in practice, concept laptop alternative!
I would actually use this as a typewriter to focus only on writing! Having a bigger screen just screams "Play, Don't Work" to me.
put the screen at a distance away, and use really big font settings; you can then focus and your eyes will be more comfortable
This thing is incredible, incredible idea mate.
This is a really neat concept piece and in the case of using a laptop with a broken display this gives life back to an otherwise junk piece of hardware. I think this would be useful for note taking where a laptop would be a bit uncomfortable to use.
This is really damn cool, I just remember about Vaio P series. There is a potential to build your own portable PC though, I would definitely back on KS.
I'm running a giant LED screen at work that's 2560x816. That image stretch slaps for me.
My goodness I love it !! Awesome mate ! Cheers from Mexico , well done 👍
just wait until custom keeb people find this board
BRO THIS IS AWESOME!! I WOULD BUY ONE RIGHT NOW IF I HAD THE MONEY!!!! I actually found this very useful!
Without the dual monitor addition, this would be a great substitute for a "digital typewriter" like the Hemingway, which goes for $700+, and having the dual monitor option on top makes it a practical workspace tool. I love this.
THIS IS SO COOL, great work of art!
I imagine this is what Dade Murphy's computer would have looked like if Hackers was made today. Cool project!
I’ve been looking for a mechanical keyboard with an e-ink screen as a device I keep purely for writing. What you’ve made here is really cool!
This was the first video I’ve watched of yours and I don’t even watch tech videos so not sure why this got recommended to me but I’m so glad it did. I want this. I think it’s perfect for a modern day writer who wants to focus with the capabilities of expanding with the dual monitor for leisure. If only I was as smart as you and knew what all those parts did I could make my own. Nonetheless, wonderful work and video! Earned my subscription
Thanks! Welcome
My sweet mom is a bit afraid of PC's, but she would absolutely love this thing!
you could build a battery bank for this and have plenty of room from what it looks like to me. either that or you could build a battery bank that clamps onto the shell in the back and plugs in.
This duo monitor set up is amazing I would definitely buy this as pc at home rather than a full on pc like normal people do
you could embed a raspberry pi pico into it as an HID device and have a thumbstick mouse! really cool build
I've been dreaming of something basically exactly like this for years. This is nuts.
Sadly, I continually need the taller monitor. This would have been great back in my youth.
I like it. If you can make it foldable it'd be perfect for a situation where you don't want a full computer. I'd probably use this instead of my phone while sitting at the desk if it was small enough
This was really amazing to watch.
1:26 As a fellow Skippy Natural Creamy Enjoyer, I support this countertop shot
Not gonna lie, this is pretty damn dope and now I want one myself.
really cool, wish I knew how to create something like that for myself.
That's amazing and innovative 💡 good job!!
You can set the taskbar to "use small taskbar buttons" on windows 10 at least to get it smaller
🔥 Love it
If I had the skills and money to blow I’d build this setup in a heartbeat
I'd love to make music on this thing. Super cool!
awesome build dude
Cyberpunk/fallout vibes. Totally dig it. Would look awesome with HAM radio setup.
Really cool idea. I have an old square Sony Trinitron CRT monitor, the same one that was used in Bladerunner. I have used it in the past as a prop in my lab just to scroll green Matrix data. Now you got me thinking outside of the box with this Nuevo Cyber Punk ideology. I could use it with a computer of some type.
Aesthetic and beautiful!
this thing is so fucking awesome. i like to type on my computer, and got into typing everyday, after reading all the terminals in fallout four, i thought it was so cool that people can give a lot of life to a computer. so i bought my own laptop and love typing on it everyday. this thing, is straight out of a nuclear war future. haha. it looks sick ass hell. i would love to type on that thing.
This looks so cool.
3:59 I thought exactly the opposite before you said that. The zenboook is pretty flat, which makes it more ergonomic. Even if you made a huge wrist-rest for it, you'd have to make a mousepad-riser as well in order to not get shoulder pain from long term usage. If you are sitting in the "correct/recommended" (if there is such a thing) ergonomic way that is.
I was more referring to the ergonomics of the displays: the lower zenbook display is at a much lower angle so you have to look down at your hands in order to see it
@@CarterHurd Yeah, off course. That's completely right. Awesome machine though. It would be pretty cool to have one ☺
I love everything about this. If I had the money, I'd be looking into commissioning my own dystopic retro-scifi build. But maybe something with a bit more of a Blade Runner vibe.
I really liked the end product. From customer point of view, I dont see it as a product of daily use. Or any type of use (for myself). But as a person who likes these type of tech geek stuff, it looks great. Especially with added screen on top of small one, it became something else. But I don't think typing would be very comfy with the high position of keyboard.
Really inspiring video! Thanks! Love the form factor!
wow! an amazing and compact computer WELL DONE JOB 😍👍
Waww this is awesome
I wish I can do projects like this
Dude this is awesome!
2 things I love about this video:
The computer itself
Disco elesym
Regarding the games and fullscreen. Many new games are deprecating the traditional "Fullscreen" option in favor of borderless fullscreen, but still call that just "Fullscreen". Thats why some games let you move the mouse outside the game even though you probably choose Fullscreen thinking it was real fullscreen when in fact its borderless fullscreen.
The issue with bordeless fullscreen though is that most of the times it has worse performance than regular old fullscreen.
that looks really cool
Keep doing this!
You are genius man ☺️
Very nice project!
Amazing job!
Man, amazing job, I'm very interested in that screen, could you give the specifics? Or maybe the link to buy it? That is super well done
Check the video description for the link
I dig it. Mainly because I hate the crappy keyboards in laptops etc.
You can set most linux window managers not to let a game "grab" the mouse, I wonder if there is a similar setting in windows?
Honestly this would be super sick with Linux + a tiling wm
what is the economics of this machine
Do add the section of pricing of buying the used parts and assembly vs buying new ones and assembling
0:25 love the simplicity, does the phone have a name?
LitePhone 2
I would you like to use something like this as a street keyboard and touch screen for gaming. something like this for gameglass would be perfect
Total unnecessary nonesense, love it!
Reminds me of one of those old school word processors
very nice, good work
This is awesome
This is cool AF.
This can easily be portable if you use Linux with a well-configured window manager, or you can just use Logitech MX Ergo for a mouse
i had a dream of making like that exact thing
Good stuff mate
This is totally what Dua Lipa would call Future Nostalgia
I would sell my soul to play in one of those
looks like a modern recreation of the apple 2 form factor
I want a POWERFUL computer that's completely inside a keyboard. Just carry your keyboard around and plug into any display and have a mobile gaming PC powerhouse
See TRS 80 model 100. Used it for years in the early 80s.
I think it wouldn't be that hard to use either a retractable cable with a cabled mouse, a wireless mouse, or make a touchpad mount so you could laptop it
This is so cool!
I would buy one of these.
This is actually pretty fucking cool
This looks like if laptop and PC had a baby
This is pretty cool.
It could be marketed as a space saving desktop.
At first I was like why. Really cool project though, looks awesome!
thats really cool!
This looks super rad. Unfortunately, this build is far too complicated for me to build. This certainly looks like it belongs in a cyber punk movie.
I’ve got a simpler design in the works for others to build
This is very sick
you just re-re-re-invent new kind of PC.
This seems like a good idea but I feel like it would work better with a touch screen so the mouse is not always needed
I agree
That is really awesome
