The stadium was designed in the 1930s to be used in the 1940 games which had to be cancelled because the Soviet Union decided to invade Finland in 1939. It couldn't be used in 1948 either because Finland was exhausted after fighting a second war with the Soviets so London hosted the 1948 games. So Helsinki finally hosted the games in 1952. Amazingly the city took care of the stadium which hosted the first European athletics competition there in the 1980s and it has just been renovated again with a roof over the seating. Gotta love Finland which never fell to Stalin's Russia. Interesting fact. Of the European countries involved in combat in WW2 only 3 did not end up with their capitals under foreign occupation. London, Moscow and, yes, Helsinki.
@@PaulVinonaama But all of those come after the 1952 Olympic Games -- which is what hauskalainen was concerned about -- giving the history of the stadium as it survived the years thru WW2.

Finally someone who pronounces Helsinki correctly!
Yes. Personally, the era or transatlantic and 'BBC' English produced the nicest dialects.
@@HowdyDo42 yeah, I like how they're actually putting effort rather than pronouncing it like "hellSS(!)incKy!!" or "PH(!)inland!"

Actually, the stadion hosted European Championships in 1971, 1994, and 2012, and World Champions in 1983 (inaugural9 and 2005.

Actually, there were 6 more European capitals NOT occupied during WW2: Berne, Dublin, Istanbul, Lisbon, Madrid and Stockholm.
@@mylesgarcia4625 but they were not combatants in WW2.... check what I stated
@@hauskalainen OK. I missed that. I sit corrected.
