There's also the case of Pete Rose, the all time MLB hits leader, who received a lifetime ban from baseball (not just MLB) for placing bets on MLB games and particularly on the Cincinnati Reds when he was their manager. Due to this he is not eligible for the Hall of Fame and he has managed to create a secondary career out of feigning persecution over this.
It's been a problem since forever in all of sports. Here in the US, our court system struck down the ban on sports betting (it was only allowed in Vegas before). And newspapers/tv anchors wouldn't even post the spread/prediction. But now that it's different, all major sports organizations monitor their players (and families) for illegal gambling. They allow athletes to bet on other sports but not the ones that they participate in.
Gambling is like a cancer. Its everywhere these days, you can even gamble on your smartphone. Its a huge problem especially in Eastern Europe where even kids gamble even though its illegal.
18:30 I think gambling addiction is far worse than videogame addiction, they are not equivalent at all. There's really no ceiling for what you can lose with gambling. And, with videogames, at least you have something, you have your time invested in something, the experience of playing, maybe some sort of achievements or some sort of vaguely social experience. With gambling, specially online gambling, you have numbers on a screen.
I agree, they're not super comparable - my mistake. I think I was just talking from the perspective of someone who's seen gaming addiction ruin lives. Point is that there are a lot of vices out there.
Man I'm glad you're talking about this, it's a real issue in my country, Brazil. I've heard about guys my age losing big time and actually going broke from highschool, it's a mess.

I don't care if guys like Ivan Toney bet on matches they aren't taking part in, that doesn't affect the game in any way. Doing what Lucas Paqueta did, and manipulating the game itself, is far worse, so of course he's the one who didn't get any punishment whatsoever
Just an overall great vid with your typical laid back story-telling. Not pointing fingers, no underlying preaching, just well structured commentary and facts from (at least ostensibly) trustworthy sources. Keep it up mate.
Gambling should not be advertised is the way it is, no question. Sports betting and prediction markets should be allowed. Players should not be betting on their own sport. All separate issues.

Great work with this one and I especially appreciate you giving time at the start and end of the video to help direct folks who are dealing with these issues to places they can get help. Love your videos keep it up!
Great video, mate! I hope more people catch onto the hypocrisy involved; the football leagues allow clubs to accept sponsorship from betting companies yet kick a fuss when players bet.
Interesting video. I was actually expecting a mention for Keith Gillespie. He was an early days EPL player who had a pretty public gambling problem. I read his book some time ago, it was a good read and discussed this quite a bit.
It's grim that the algorithms will find boys/men who like sports and will inundate their adverts with betting ads...my missus' free streaming account doesn't get the same adverts mine does, whereas when we log on to my account it's gambling advert after gambling advert...it's horrendous for people who are addicted to it.
I think Fantasy Sports is a good enough alternative to sports betting. It allows you to put a stake on the result of the sport without messing up your financials.
Another great video, brilliant mix of opinion plus facts too - as always. Shines a light on a topic that isn’t unspoken but often gets brushed aside and not dealt with for multiple reasons (💰), but is still a big problem. Also huge credit for putting out helplines too, great message sent. Keep it up ❤
I think it goes both ways. You cannot get addicted if you do not even start. Betting Ads are all over the place but not everyone is addicted to gambling. U expose yourself to addiction when u start gambling. Same with drugs, if you don’t start taking them, u can never get addicted.
On an individual level, yes. Everyone is responsible for their own actions. On a societal level it's different though. The more gambling is promoted, the more people will become addicted to gambling. These betting companies aren't paying millions to become shirt sponsors for nothing. They will make their money back and some of their new costumers will inevitably become gambling addicts. In other words; If you become a gambling addict, it's your fault. However, it's a societal problem if gambling addiction starts to become more and more common.
What was the point of that comparison? So we should allow drugs to be also freely advertised because after all its your own problem if you became an addict? God gave you brain so use that ting, brudda
@@srakotanishe1945 there r no public advertising for drugs but some countries r actually encouraging its use. Not sure what the big deal is if a player is gambling on matches that they are not involved in. I understand there is some degree of 'insider trading', so maybe only restrict betting on matches in their own league. Interested in knowing whether or not the rules also apply to coaches and managers? However, I do think players need to be educated in the difference between gambling addiction and having more money than sense
That bj88 sponsor ruins the Bournemouth kit. It's crazy how long the EPL got rid of alcohol sponsors but were fine with the betting. Can't wait to see them off the kits at least!

In my coutnry illegal sports betting has gotten into 3rd division reserve teams. It´s also happened on some 3rd division sides like Victoriano Arenas who always got a goal scored against them on the first 15 minutes of the second half; there was also an incident where 3 minutes in an Agropecuario player made a clear red card foul on a Boca Jrs player that is suspected of being intentional
I was unknownly relating sports and gambling because where I saw a sporting event I saw a betting site. I wish I could go back to seeing football as football and not think about everything surrounding it
Nothing to worry about with young people. Its not like kids have grown up playing video games like FIFA where you can spend some real money for a chance at getting an in game item from a box or pack. An entire generation hasn't been groomed to become gamblers or anything...
In Romania on every street you see at least 3 casinos with 2 pawn shops near them, and in the Romanian first league only one team does not have a gambling site or casino as a sponsor, even our national team and golden generations makes adds for casinos and gambling sites.....
Paqueta being investigated for gambling on literally the exact same service advertised on his club's shirt is the most egregious example. This shit needs to be a thing of the past like tobacco advertising.
I'm fine with gambling but more and more I feel that it should just not be advertised. It distracts from the sanctity of all sports and clearly has a great potential for harm. Leagues or clubs obviously won't willingly lose out on revenue but governments need to step in and crack down.
Players from my country were selling games from the world cup qualifying on Concacaf vs usa and others, they got caught and fined and pushed out of the league. I thought he was going to mention it, but didn't.
In the states man ESPN has entire TV blocks named “ESPN BET LIVE” that are just picks of the day every pregame show has some sort of gambling segment it’s insane and imo it’s completely killing sports fandom
It's not just sports. Gambling is really ubiquitous in pretty much every aspect of society at this point. Loot boxes in video games, mystery packages for toys, trading cards, and the good old lottery.

In my country (Romania) it's also a big problem and exactly as you describe: go ouside and take a few steps in any direction in major cities and you find betting shops and/or cazinoes.
Also I can't watch a proper football match on TV without betting adds every 20-30 mins. Stay safe people!
@@AlinPrisecaru I’ve never had it happen before but I’m also curious to see if the vid gets flagged or anything…
I've been following you for years even before you started showing your face and I've never commented or contributed but I just have to say this is one of your best videos so far in terms of being true to who you are
I always appreciate your take on football
GGMU
Thanks Tim! GGMU always🔴
Oh man you should see how bad it is in greece and cyprus
and Brazil, Nigeria, etc...
Or south Africa our whole league is sponsored by Betway now 😂
And Romania where the league is named after a betting company
Nigeria too
Croatia too
it has seriously become a problem especially here at home - South Africa.
thank you for taking the time to address this and keep up the good work Tinahse. 👍🏾
A very beautiful topic indeed to discuss and ponder upon
Gambling is like a cancer. Its everywhere these days, you can even gamble on your smartphone. Its a huge problem especially in Eastern Europe where even kids gamble even though its illegal.
Kudos for you and Vizeh addressing this. Betting spoils the game.
As someone who is getting into a gambling problem lately this is a great video.
Sorry to hear that, friend. We're all here to help.
Man I'm glad you're talking about this, it's a real issue in my country, Brazil. I've heard about guys my age losing big time and actually going broke from highschool, it's a mess.
Probably my favorite video you’ve ever produced. Well done.
Is crazy to me how everyone complains about politics ruining football, when they let this slide, in latin america is even worse, because because of a bad economy situation, giving the hope of making millions is hurting the culture and people at the same time, love this channel, and the fact that you took your time to make this video, really hope it gets big, and makes a change.
Diré que tienes un nivel de inglés alto, pero tienes que usar las commas menos. Utiliza el punto cuando sientes que termines una oración independiente.
@@Jorge-lh6px mala mía, gracias por la corrección
This is my favorite satire channel. Great jokes, so ironic. Loved it.
Crazy that I got a Ladbrokes ad mid way through this video
You're a legend dude, love your content and you seem like a decent bloke. Thanks
I always thought it was so hypocritical that tobacco can't be advertised, but alcohol and gambling can.
It will remain this way until the so called 'great and the good' of society begin to be affected.
In South Africa both male and female leagues are sponsored by betting companies, Hollywoodbet and Betways,
Gambling should not be advertised is the way it is, no question. Sports betting and prediction markets should be allowed. Players should not be betting on their own sport. All separate issues.
WHAT A VIDEO! man covers the most interesting topics in football
Ironic thing is there are multiple gambling ads on this brilliant video. Everyone from the Rubberbandits and Eric Cantona take the betting companies money Paddy Power, Betway, William Hill ect
Love how the sponsor add is fandule for me
Paqueta’s fouls have always been sus and it’s good to see him get caught.
idk if it‘s just me, but the audio in the intro comes across incredbily crisp. If you have got a new microphone, good on you! Love the content, keep it up!
Man, what a great video. It is an important topic indeed, but the small puns you include here and there make it brilliant
Dude, you`re a beacon of light in this platform, I swear. Fantastic content, no bs and head on the right spot. Thank you man. Always quality content.
great point raised, thanks for the video and appreciate opening up the subject, the elephant in the room
Thanks for raising awareness on this
Interesting video.
You really are a great dude and a great UA-camr, thank you man
I think Fantasy Sports is a good enough alternative to sports betting.
Some countries are introducing injection rooms for public drug use; where they can safely take drugs. They are also introducing pills testing to make sure the drugs r good to take and no deadly substances r added to them so that the public can safely consume them.
One thing im very grateful for was being raised with the values to stay away from gambling. Shit is such a slippery slope and getting easier by the day to partake in.
Amazing video idea and execution!
Miss your post match day videos
They never went away?
OMG I'm so glad I'm seeing noise around this issue. I feel like I'm going crazy with the amount of new betting sponsors I see, whenever I watch a match from my local league, it feels like its being sponsored by yet another new brand. It's insane.
Getting a betting ad before this video is wild 😂
I love this guy
Bro ik u won’t see this but this video was unreal I love it when you do this style of video
What made you think I woldn't see it haha! Cheers, mate!
@@FootballIconic haha mb man keep it up!
This is a very good and ethically sound take, done with the necessary empathy and realism. Well done my friend!!
Also, fuck gambling companies and long reign Luton :)
5:42 also in South Africa the first division League just got a rebrand to the BETWAY PREMIERSHIP... how ironic.
another amazing video 🤝
Excellent 👌, very well researched video,. bravo
You’re a good human, Tinashe. Truly
got a gambling ad during this vid
You just got yourself a new sub from Zim
When I saw Paqueta on the thumbnail I got excited we got a west ham video until I saw the other players on the thumbnail
Let’s goooo Tinashe!!
Nah, idc about anything else, all I know is that Luton Town is the only respectable club in the top 2 divisions of English football frfr
Love your videos great narration BBC should hire you to take over from Gary Lineker Match of the Day
This is very important man, and gambling companies and projects are one of the future evils in our world as i see the circumstances around them
I was unknownly relating sports and gambling because where I saw a sporting event I saw a betting site. I wish I could go back to seeing football as football and not think about everything surrounding it
Fantastic video 👏🏿
Nothing to worry about with young people. Its not like kids have grown up playing video games like FIFA where you can spend some real money for a chance at getting an in game item from a box or pack. An entire generation hasn't been groomed to become gamblers or anything...
Ever since the pandemic, sports betting ads have been relentless here in Australia. it's generally concerning, you can't escape it
great video! now im gonna go gamble
In Romania on every street you see at least 3 casinos with 2 pawn shops near them, and in the Romanian first league only one team does not have a gambling site or casino as a sponsor, even our national team and golden generations makes adds for casinos and gambling sites.....
McDonalds and Coca-Cola sponsorship is pretty grim also
Paqueta just made a mistake against city 👀👀
Good video, i think the addiction economy as a whole needs to be banned from all advertising personally.
Ivan Benjamin Elijah Toney= I BET
As we all know, The giant hypocrisy is ALL the sport betting sponsors on footy kits.
Ridiculous
Paqueta being investigated for gambling on literally the exact same service advertised on his club's shirt is the most egregious example. This shit needs to be a thing of the past like tobacco advertising.
Remember kids, 99% of gamblers quit before winning a gazillion dollars.
Keep gambling.
Sports gambling should be tightly controlled so you can only basically bet pennies on it.
Good damn I was quick here.
That's what she said
2:49 my man needs therapy after that one, he even got included in a football video
In the states man ESPN has entire TV blocks named “ESPN BET LIVE” that are just picks of the day every pregame show has some sort of gambling segment it’s insane and imo it’s completely killing sports fandom
0:52 That's crazy 😂😂
I laughed so eff'n hard at that😂😂
Neymar is a menace
Bruh, I'm Zimbo and I miss hearing you say "Hi, I'm Tinashe" at the start of your videos
It's not just sports. Gambling is really ubiquitous in pretty much every aspect of society at this point. Loot boxes in video games, mystery packages for toys, trading cards, and the good old lottery.
Great Video!
As someone who lives in the state... I just wanna say thank you for pronouncing Nevada correctly... cheers.
