I think the guy who caught the kid was the dad.If you watch right at the beginning the guy and kid are basically right next to each other the guy goes into the store and looks back wondering where his kid that was just with him went and sees him on the escalator. Unless the kid screamed there was no other reason for the guy to look back. You would think if the kid had screamed others might actually care. Thus "The Hero" is just the dad who momentarily lost track of his kid.

well the kid didnt yell or the people on the escalator would have sprinted up there to grab him. they didn't notice him

Where were the parents in this situation and why did it seem like no one else cared. There were people going up the escalator for crying out loud.
