I'm really impressed with Matt for taking on such a powerful topic and actually being real about it. Platitudes like "Be Better" make for great sound bites but don't help. We do a phenomenal job these days of pointing out problems endlessly, but it's crickets when it comes to real solutions. Thanks for this video!
If the whole world disappeared and couldn't "do better" and assist the returned then the world is truly corrupt as we set are own rules and saying we have short comings economicly would be corrupt ideals at best
The point was that they should think of both sides.... They didn't... They were planning on throwing millions of people under the bus... Not thinking of both sides was a problem... I will admit that they could have stated it better... But they were only focusing on a single side...
But what "real solution" does the video offer? It essentially says "be better" to common people rather than influential politicians, I think it's an even worse take than Sam's

That what happens when your entire story has to be written after you've started filming. While info on the original plot was is spotty it wasn't what we got.
The irony is that all of it could have been averted had the Avengers not snapped everybody back immediately. If they had instead told the world that they had the means to bring everybody back, then the world could have prepaired for everyone's return. Double the food output and build a large amount of emergency shelters in the span of a few months, and then he return wouldn't be nearly as hard on the global economy. Sure, Thanos would have popped up before any of that could have happened, but it's not like the Avengers knew that when they made their decision.
This whole issue is why I honestly despised the whole "let's bring everybody back" idea. Even leaving alone the logistics... What about the people who came back after being dead for half a decade to find their families moved on? Their spouses remarried, their children grown up? What happens then?
Yeah they just weren't thinking when they decided to do that. Just couldn't let things be as they were had to find a way to retcon yet another major plot device to make room for the next shitty one
As shown in CA: the first avenger, Bucky actually was doing very well for himself. In comparison to Steve he has a suit, and mentions a car while Steve is just scraping by. Bucky came from a very well off family and I want to know what that money would look like today.
His 3 dollars he spent on a girl just to win her a stuffed prize would be around $50 today. He'd be fucking rich. Especially since we can presume he's working with the military or government im some way since he strolls into their private property and hangers and nobody cares
You have a problem with Bucky. He “missing presumed dead.” His pay stops there. His parents would get his $25,000 government life insurance and his account would be closed. Now, if he were declared “missing presumed dead” his benefits would continue to grow for seven years. At that point, with no further evidence of him being alive, his payouts would be made and he’s back to zero. But let’s sat he is just declared missing. The minute he took up arms against the US, he loses everything. So no matter how you slice it, he broke.
But no one knew who the Winter Soldier was until Civil War (since Steve didn’t run around telling people after WS). So I think the situation is more fuzzy since he’d probably be assumed dead before they found out he was brainwashed and made into the Winter Soldier bc it’s a bit presumptuous to assume he’s still alive after not returning to the states after 70~ years and being in his late 90s
The biggest problem that phase 4 introduces is the fact that the Avengers blipped back half the universe without giving the world (or the rest of the universe) any notice whatsoever.
Theory: over the many seasons of icarly, the crew has done a fair amount of not very legal things that could have gotten them in a lot more trouble than they should, stealing, breaking an entering, sending a doorman to the hospital. On the whole Bucky getting rich thing. He never was officially discharged from the army (because the army thought he died) so the army would owe him back pay for every year since 1942 and what they owed would be whatever the pay scale is for sergeant in those years. So he’d be owed a lot of money
Nope. This is the federal government your talking about. They will find ANY excuse to stop your pay. Trust me. I'm a veteran who has worked with a lot of veterans in need of a disability check. Being found to be a Russian agent would also be held against Bucky (even though it was forcefully done to him.)

the big problem in the "how rich is bucky" theory: he is officaly dead, so there is no money to grow intrest, when he "comes back from the dead" he is someone without a single dime.
@@dname9394 there is not inflation adjustment for existing money. if you have 1$ in 1944 and keep that 1$ bill until today it is still just 1$. inflation means that there is so much 1$ bills, thet you can buy less with the same amount of bills. this is why in our current finacial situation (since 2008) saving koney is useless because you dont get any intrest but inflation is still there. so me having 5$ now and me having 5$ in 10 years means that in 10 years i am poorer then now.
There was a reason on why it felt a bit chopped up, that's because it was. There was supposed to be a side-story about a pandemic, but Marvel cut that due to, well, the pandemic still being around when the show aired.
You might want to look into the numbers again on how much Bucky would have now. I forget which law it is, but I'm pretty sure soldiers who are either POWs or MIA are compensated on their return based on the assumption that they had been in military service (and given the appropriate promotions) for the entire period they were missing. So both Steve and Bucky would have received a pretty substantial amount of back pay after being MIA in the ice and a POW of Hydra respectively.
Pretty sure there was even a Cap storyline about this at one point. Congress decided that that law applies to Cap and so gave him all his back pay, but in the process ruled that since they were paying him, he now worked directly for the Government, leading to one of the times Steve gave up being Captain America since he disagreed with what they were asking him to do.
Wouldn't matter. As MatPat said about the blipped people, they do not hold the assets of dead people. Bucky's assests wouldve gone to next of kin or claimed in some way. Funny MatPat didnt catch that, seeing as how he used that as the premise for his point about the blipped

The difference is that these aren't assets held indefinitely for a dead soldier (those would have gone to his next of kin); this is wages paid retroactively to an MIA serviceman. IIRC this exact scenario has played out several times, particularly during and after the Vietnam War.
But you also have to remember that falcon in the Winter soldier was originally going to be about a virus and I think the flags Masters were trying to steal the cure for the homeless people so the reason that it doesn't make that much sense it feels rushed is because of the pandemic they had to basically in a way rewrite the whole thing in fear of people having a negative response to the original plot.
this dunno the script but probably it would have made sense if they showed the GRC as bad or at least grey. or the flagsmasher were the one with the virus and they were not anti-heroes but full on evil. either way the show suffered heavely from the reworks.
This makes sense and it sounds reasonable enough for me to believe it’s true. However, they still published it like this which means it’s canon (at least until retconned somewhere down the line) and it’s fair game to question it and poke holes at it. They could’ve pushed the show back and said they had to work on the show some more, but they were happy with the product. So that is not an excuse they can use (imo).

Heck, they say that that was basically the same universe as Tiny as work that way out of the attic, BS it that shouldn't have work. Re: your maths for how rich Bucky was, it would depend on whether the army would be willing to consider him a POW for his time captured and under the control of HYDRA. A soldier held as a POW would be entitled to any back pay, pension and reasonable rank increases that would have been earned during the period held. There's still a reasonable argument for Bucky being rich - but only if the Army decides to play ball.

Printing money can cause inflation, but the level of inflation we are seeing even here in the US does not match the economists predictions. Everyone is talking about inflation, but what everyone also fails to mention is that it is a much lower rate than traditional economics would dictate. As it would turn out printing money alone may not cause inflation, rather how that money is spent is what might dictate it. So no, printing money isn’t an idiotic idea, it’s just not a feasible idea for every economy.

The advantage the US has is that it's the US. Your currency is the most used one across the globe, so you don't feel as heavily the effects of inflation as you should, the devaluation of your currency, cause everyone still wants and needs US Dollars. However, if the printing keeps going for a considerable period of time, there's gonna be a time when US Dollars are no longer the most wanted and used, cause there's so many of them. Basically, it's still a bad idea, but you have a lot more breathing room than basically any other nation. And the video, while talking about the US and Cap, the Blip and the issues that the show talked about, would affect the world. So yeah, don't print money.
Film Theory idea that I hope makes the cut: theatre owners consider a movie a success if they can sell a lot of popcorn with it. Is there any correlation between the content of a movie and how much the concession sells? Maybe MatPat could do a Food Theory crossover episode and compare different snacks with different movies (Marvel movie with popcorn, Rom-Coms with Raisinettes, etc.).
I kinda equate the whole "Do better" thing to the steak analogy. Lets say your at a restaurant and you order a steak, you take a bite and decide you don't like it. You then complain to the waiter and you tell them "This steak is terrible, you need to do better". Naturally the waiter say's "Of course sir, what can we do to make it better for you" and your answer is "He's the chef, he should figure it out"
That's ridiculous. The chef needs to know WHY it was bad, or there's nothing they can do to improve it. If it was too salty and you just tell him to "do better", how do you think you're gonna get a less salty steak?

Bucky was also considered killed in action, I would imagine that would result in some kind of benefits or something for his next of kin, right? Also, I don't think any bank would keep an account open for 78 years of inactivity.
There’s actually a pretty big flaw in MatPat’s theory here, and that’s in regards to the reappearing people themselves. Matt takes examples from real world inflationary economics that increase the total in-market currency without any major change in population. After the snap is when the globe would have experienced the most inflation, since the number of bank notes would remain the same but the population was cut in half, meaning there is twice as many notes-per-person in the market now, halving their value. Unsnapping everyone would actually cause radical deflation, which is also very dangerous, and the mass production of currency to counter that effect would be necessary. Think of it this way: if you have one diamond and 2 people, or 5 diamonds and 10 people, in both scenarios the diamond is worth the same, since the supply is 50% of demand. However if you have those same 5 diamonds and suddenly only 5 people, the demand plummets but the supply remains the same. A global effort to compensate and re-house the unsnapped would be the largest step the GRC could take to avoid an economic collapse, not cause one.
Good point; the GRC is going to have to relocate and rehouse *somebody*. But the point is not that they weren't doing things perfectly for everyone with no flaws or even that such a thing is possible. The point is that they should have done better: tried to make people like Karli feel that an acceptable solution was being worked toward, so they don't despair and become terrorists, because they figure they are going to die either way.
From this analogy, it sounds like pumping money into the system would be necessary immediately after the snap, since the demand per unit of supply is halved. However, the opposite of what is described in your analogy is what happens when the population doubles. Now, demand per unit of supply is doubled, meaning prices increase, which would constitute inflation
I don't think we ever REALLY thought about the snap, otherwise it would break all immersion in the MCU. he started the theory from the blip not the snap. and accepting that whatever happened before already brought the market to a balanced state

Your potential theory falls apart upon Bucky’s assumed death. His money would have all gone to his next of kin. Even when he would have been found alive years later. That money would be gone and probably spent.

I'd love to see the other side of this, where you analyze the exact impact of a "society" when Thanos snaps. What really happens when half the cops, half the bureaucrats, half the taxi dispatchers, half the pilots, half the construction crews disappear in the world? is 5 years really fast enough to put the world back together?
You could also consider the possibility that it was not an exact split in every group, the entire population of China could've been a part of the 3.5 billion that disappeared
just a quick reminder: it isn't half of each job. it should tend to that percentage, but it's totally not assured for two reasons: some jobs have more people than others, let's just say for example that the number of pilots can't be the same (and infact is probably half) that of the flight attendants. meaning that it's totally possible that all the pilots got snapped. second: since the snap halved the population caring only about the male/female ratio. it could happen that some jobs, especially those with a higher discrepancy on the male/female ratio got fully snapped. for example almost all nurses are females, but the teacher is a 50/50 male/female job. so it could happen that all the nurses are snapped, and only the male teacher got snapped. just the first two problems I see with the snap, I could find way more. Let's just say I don't believe the world would be that good after 5 years
@@Smileyreal this was my thought almost exactly, how much, in %, would each country lose to the blip? Some countries might end up as near as or better off than before.
If Thanos could see how the snap affected Earth, especially after half of all life was brought back, he probably would have realized he was wrong. It least with Earth. Planets all across the universe were affected by the snap, not just Earth. So other worlds may have been better off until half of their population suddenly came back. Now, not so much. Depends on what world you lived on and the conditions/circumstances.
So glad you covered this topic. It felt a little draining to hear a lot of people praise Sam's "Do Better" speech after the finale like it was some kind of revolutionary idea.
Makes sense though. It appeals to the desire to just "stick it" to people in positions of power. Probably the same effect within that universe as with the general audience. A pretty speech that was completely hollow, but sounds really nice to the ears so it gets praise.

Marvel loves making hero's ex soldiers or employees of secret government agencies, when really they're supposed to be vigilantes working to save people from the injustices the politicians create in the first place...
Sidenote: remember that they cut the series down from 9 eps to 6, and cut out the whole pandemic plot which is why they needed the medicine, due to **cough** **cough** things. I think Sam's speech at the end was changed because of that to the slapdash monologue.

I get the theory, even if I don't agree. My own interpretation of do better is that Falcon doesn't know how to fix these problems, he says so himself, his point is that everyone in the series has their own stuff to work on and do better with. The Government need to communicate with the people and at least try to find a more peaceful solution to their problem, the Flagsmashers need to find a less violent method to bring their message across, (although probably not since most of them are dead now) even the main characters need to find ways of bettering themselves, Bucky needs to reach out to Yori and tell own up about what he did to his son, (which he does, so yay Bucky for beginning his journey) John Walker, kinda self explanatory and even Sam feels beaten up that he couldn't do better for Karli, the woman who died in his arms. What most of those have in common is that they all involve people doing what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning, sit down and talk. As corny as it sounds, the point is that there are problems with no easy answers, even the writers don't know the right answers, but the best way to find them is if we work together to solve them, to talk to the people instead of going all in with one solution that will hurt so many people. I also get how my reasoning sounds all sunshine and rainbows, I know that no matter what they do someone, some group of people will probably be effected negatively, I'm just sure that with cooperation the people of the world could find a way that satisfied most, because when you have a struggle that effects the whole world you'd need everyone to fight it together. But ignore all that because it's just a mirror of our world and while we'll never experience anything this unsolvable irl, we can sure work to make life better if we band together.

Also they allegedly deleted all scenes of a major plotline in the show involving an airborne virus after covid 19 pandemic came in real life so that also could be the caee.
I love the show. In fact it’s probably my favorite MCU show, but it definitely needed more time. Maybe even an episode to show how the Flag Smashers got the raw deal.

I think this is a great place for Dr doom to make an appearance, as the ruler of the country of latveria which was created during the five years between the two snaps. There would now be problems in his country that he would most likely blame the avengers for. It would give the character depth as well as making a marvel villian have beef with someone other than Tony stark for a change.

@@four-en-tee I’m not saying it’s bad, because there are good elements to it, but it ends up being really meh because it was so rushed. So far all the Marvel tv shows have had really cool premises, that Disney somehow screws up because they rush them out instead of delaying the project!
The problem I have with your calculations for how much money Bucky has is that you're calculating how much he would have if EVERY PENNY of what he earned in those months was put in a bank account. I'm pretty sure some of that money would have gone towards living expenses, or at least would have been spent on some luxuries of one kind or another. (I get that he'd be at the barracks, food would be provided, etc, but I'm sure that not ALL of the money would just go into a bank account)
He was trying to give a maximum cap of how much money he would have. Even if Bucky had (unrealistically) saved every penny, he still wouldn't have a ton. That's the only point Matt was trying to make.
Its funny that Sam was so quick to blame the politicians like "Be better" i woulda said "its you heroes that failed us 1st, if you DID BETTER against Thanos this wouldn't even be a problem."😂

The “Goodwill” happened in the Philippines. When the government no longer provided enough cash allowance or support, each community set up a pantry, where people donate by just leaving it at a random set-up without anyone guarding, or managing. Farmers from the Provinces, headed to the city and left sacks of vegetables and fruits, the privileged ones, left canned goods even cash donations, and even the poor people even went to leaving a few goods that they could give for other people. The people who needed it, just lined up and take goods, that they think they need for the day. And it all started because one woman left a table and supplies, a cardboard signage with a message “Take what you need, and leave some for others” and it became a cycle. It went to a barter type of give and take. What you don’t need, give away, and take what you need in the set-up.
@@Truman5555 As soon you create a seat with power, an absolute asshole will sit on it and ruin everything. Capitalism when it actually work it's because the fierce competition makes no seat have too much power, but as soon you let seats with more power to appear, everything gets ruined.
That kind of system sounds good on paper, and may work in some cases, but people very commonly fail account for the natural evil of mankind. All it takes is one asshole taking more than their fair share and suddenly the whole system collapses. Unless, of course, you use force to organize who gets what. But then, who decides how much of something a person gets? These kinds of altruistic ideas work on the tribal level but on a scale to do real good would only lead to more violence and suffering.

You do realize that Bucky would have been declared dead after the train scene, so he wouldn't have been able to get compound interest. I love Falcon and the Winter Soldier though.
Well he was Captured so he could collect on all the back pay during the time he spent captive. Plus he would be elidable for promotions while captured.

Like I said when watching the movies. "Bringing back the blipped people would cause more problems". I mean most people accepted the situation as bad as it was but bringing them back five years later just causes way too many problems
There’s also the really dark and sad reality that all the people that were on planes, ships or driving, more then likely probably died as soon as they snapped back….
Also the cars would have crashed but they wouldn’t be in the cars because they would have blipped before the cars crashed therefore they would be where they where while they were driving and not where the car crashed

I wouldn't trust him to pay attention. He called the I.M.P (Immediate Murder professionals) the immediate murder patrol and completely missed the mark with what Alastor was and when he was alive.

@@sturm9087 you can't excuse a person's actions just because they have ptsd. Sam, Bucky, Rhodey, a lot of the avengers who were also soldiers have ptsd. But Walker was shown, multiple times, to find shame and anger in being bested in battle and his arc was literally about his decent into a power hungry need for a serum in contrast to Sam's refusal to take it. His ptsd is part of his character and affected him? Yes of course. But you can't claim he's not about the pursuit of power for his own benefit because that's his purpose as a character to the story.
Kratos showed boy how he could be better and how becoming better made him you aware of the impact his actions have on others in both positive and negative ways.
Sam's speech is honestly the most "Captain America" thing he has done so far. Steve was a simple man and when faced with things that were more complicated that he understood, he would admit he didn't get it but still implored the other person to "do better." Tony understandably wanted to be proactive with the defense of the earth AFTER it had already been invaded once yet Steve admonished him for it and maintained their placed was to Avenge and not be proactive. He did the same with Fury. He basically shamed Fury for being proactive with global threats because "back in my day people had to have done something wrong before we did anything (not his exact word but close)." I expected more from Sam because he is a man of this era and understands things are more complicated, but his speech was still one that would be at home coming from Steve.
He just sounded incredibly ignorant. Like a child saying 'the government should do something'. The politics in disney shows nowadays are all over the place and nonsense.
The difference between Steve and Sam is Steve knew his limits and didn’t act like they weren’t there, Sam knows his limits and then ignores them, as seen in his speech
I mean, Sam is a superhero, why do people want him to be a government tool? Superheros' whole thing is saving the little guy while talking truth to power, and that's what Sam did. Why do y'all want them to be politicians all of a sudden?

That's why Cap and his crew became vigilante after Civil Wars, always on the run, no longer superheroes. I understood the “Do Better” line to mean do better getting the people impacted by decisions in the room when trying to solve complex problems. That made more sense to me especially coming from Sam as a minority, that as a group has typically been left out of the room.

In short, matpat thinks the government men sam is talking to are trying their best, and sam expects more. I think that they aren't trying as hard as maybe they should be, and sam wants the most out of them
The show goes out of it's way to depict how bad the GRC have been managing the whole post blip thing even tho they hold a huge amount of power and resources. I'm pretty sure they can and should "do better"

They aren't terrorists by default, the situation drove them to that point. If those folks with power had acted in a better manner then the people would never have felt that level of desperation. That's what Cap is saying.
How about this: if banner-hulk had worded it differently. It could've solved a lot. Instead of "bring back those who vanished", use that snap to "make it so thanos had never snapped". Yes, its altering the timeline, but its not really like thats completely out of the marvel wheelhouse.
I think the weakness of that final scene is that Disney can't endorse anything remotely radical or interesting. The whole movie sets up a fairly intense problem and situation. The returners who are preferred by the GRC are beneficiaries of injustice, the disinheriting of people from their lands and homes of the past two years. Compare this to the way the intervening years are talked about, the peace and mutual care that characterized the societies. Those societies likely could have absorbed the returners, but the tendency of imperialism (another major theme of Falcon & the Winter Soldier) leads the great powers to create the GRC. The fix-boat scene isn't just an argument for "make better policy." It's an argument for mutual obligation to each other, caring for those in need with our own hands and labor. Sacrificing for others because they're our neighbors. Loving neighbors for no other reason than that they're there. Sam's speech only fits the themes of the show if "do better" means "end your imperialism" and "sacrifice your own wealth and power to aid those in need."
That first line is the main issue right there. They knew the Flag Smashers were right so they had to make them terrorists to set up the conflict, which also means there is no looping back to agreeing with them
The solution is simple, making it happen is hard. That said, if people had already cut out capitalism while people were gone, people would probably end up accepting it. Of course the rich won't be happy but having lost their leverage I don't know if they could do much. Disney is just trying to pander, but not actually make anything with meaning. I miss the days when there was lots of different studios making movies

I want to point out that the homes from before the blip still exist, and many of them are probably still in pretty good shape. You could just give people houses. Given how unprecedented the blip was, you could totally justify taking extra houses from landlords and real estate empires, and get people housed.
well first safety net should be family, a lot of those property may go to next of kin, and they may be OK with letting you stay or help you while you sort things out, so this can at least absorb some of those numbers, I know not all families would be quite this open, then there is houses that where left abandoned with no next of kin or houses that where left with o maintenance, there you can house other portion of people, maybe give a bonus for repairing them and repopulating areas that may have been abandoned, there may be some ways to at least alleviate things also real state price would have collapsed prior to the people reappearing, so maybe people where not investing in real state BTW landlord who rent to families and such are usually not the mega rich, they usually middle class , or slightly upper class, the very wealthy will have better real state investments that do not require as much micromanagement and investment, so that may not be the best place to look for

Five years is a long time to let houses sit empty. All of them were also disconnected from utilities and you can't just switch massive reators back on for power for instance. Realistically, millions would have died after being returned.

The squatters rights argument isn’t valid. Most places require you to be staying there for at least 15 years. Some places have laws that say as high as 30 years, and I’ve seen 20-25 as the most common in the US
Arguable. Yeah most places require more time, but also, in this hypothetical situation, previous owners were supposed dead and it was a world wide phenomenon. I'm sure courts all over the world were having field days with how unprecedented everything was and how some variant of squatters rights had to apply, because there was no way of knowing. All new owners documentations would have been as legal as the previous owners. That's kind of the crux of the debate. The people that vanished didn't do so willingly, and the people that moved on had no way to know they were coming back.
I'm going with the idea that he's not doing a full one to one comparison. otherwise the entire argument assumes that companies who don't want to increase pay even now with the "worker shortage" would increase pay and that governmental budgets would be readjusted armies being cut in half and all.

In many cases those homes would have been resold, (likely very cheaply due to the decrease in property value that would come from half the population being gone), so the new owners present there would be entirely within their legal right to the property. As a result, attempting to kick them out of their houses in favor of the previous owners would be as legally sound as it would be for someone in real life who didn't pay their bills to go back up to their former home and try to claim it. Though the circumstances are a bit different given the situation, from a legal standpoint there's no way any court system could side with the previous owners in that situation since the transfer of ownership would have been done through entirely legitimate means.

Wouldn't Bucky have been making some form of back pay from the time he disappeared to the time he was discovered to still be alive as The Winter Soldier? Bucky was a POW who was forced to carry out assassinations against his will, so I would think that would need to be taken into account. Sure, it most likely wouldn't have earned any compound interest since he was presumed dead all that time, but I would think he'd still receive a monster paycheck for 70+ years of service.

Not really. Both supply and demand moved together. It would decimate industries though. With so much overstock on housing there would not be demand for builders which means over supply of building materials. Food would rot on the shelves because there was so much and could take farmers out of business because their new product isn't moving. Imagine how that would be handled when suddenly double population starving due to lack of farming infrastructure. That's when inflation would take off.
Not really, more likely there would have been deflation. Most cash locked up while stuff like homes, cars and tvs are readily seizable. My guess is that the US and other firstworld countries would run an aggressive immigrant campaign to get factories and the like running back up to speed. It wouldn't completely work as the people they'd be getting aren't conditioned to be obedient consumerist factory wage slaves from birth.

The irony is that all of it could have been averted had the Avengers not snapped everybody back immediately. If they had instead told the world that they had the means to bring everybody back, then the world could have prepaired for everyone's return. Double the food output and build a large amount of emergency shelters in the span of a few months, and then he return wouldn't be nearly as hard on the global economy.

You have a problem with Bucky. He “missing presumed dead.” His pay stops there. His parents would get his $25,000 government life insurance and his account would be closed. Now, if he were declared “missing presumed dead” his benefits would continue to grow for seven years. At that point, with no further evidence of him being alive, his payouts would be made and he’s back to zero. But let’s sat he is just declared missing. The minute he took up arms against the US, he loses everything. So no matter how you slice it, he broke.

The biggest problem that phase 4 introduces is the fact that the Avengers blipped back half the universe without giving the world (or the rest of the universe) any notice whatsoever.
Theory: over the many seasons of icarly, the crew has done a fair amount of not very legal things that could have gotten them in a lot more trouble than they should, stealing, breaking an entering, sending a doorman to the hospital. There was a reason on why it felt a bit chopped up, that's because it was. There was supposed to be a side-story about a pandemic, but Marvel cut that due to, well, the pandemic still being around when the show aired.
You might want to look into the numbers again on how much Bucky would have now. I forget which law it is, but I'm pretty sure soldiers who are either POWs or MIA are compensated on their return based on the assumption that they had been in military service (and given the appropriate promotions) for the entire period they were missing. So both Steve and Bucky would have received a pretty substantial amount of back pay after being MIA in the ice and a POW of Hydra respectively.
Pretty sure there was even a Cap storyline about this at one point. Congress decided that that law applies to Cap and so gave him all his back pay, but in the process ruled that since they were paying him, he now worked directly for the Government, leading to one of the times Steve gave up being Captain America since he disagreed with what they were asking him to do.

The difference is that these aren't assets held indefinitely for a dead soldier (those would have gone to his next of kin); this is wages paid retroactively to an MIA serviceman. IIRC this exact scenario has played out several times, particularly during and after the Vietnam War.
But you also have to remember that falcon in the Winter soldier was originally going to be about a virus and I think the flags Masters were trying to steal the cure for the homeless people so the reason that it doesn't make that much sense it feels rushed is because of the pandemic they had to basically in a way rewrite the whole thing in fear of people having a negative response to the original plot.

Re: your maths for how rich Bucky was, it would depend on whether the army would be willing to consider him a POW for his time captured and under the control of HYDRA. A soldier held as a POW would be entitled to any back pay, pension and reasonable rank increases that would have been earned during the period held. There's still a reasonable argument for Bucky being rich - but only if the Army decides to play ball.
Isn't Bucky working for T'Challa now? That should provide a pretty comfortable income.

Everyone is talking about inflation, but what everyone also fails to mention is that it is a much lower rate than traditional economics would dictate. As it would turn out printing money alone may not cause inflation, rather how that money is spent is what might dictate it.

The advantage the US has is that it's the US. Your currency is the most used one across the globe, so you don't feel as heavily the effects of inflation as you should, the devaluation of your currency, cause everyone still wants and needs US Dollars.
However, if the printing keeps going for a considerable period of time, there's gonna be a time when US Dollars are no longer the most wanted and used, cause there's so many of them.
Basically, it's still a bad idea, but you have a lot more breathing room than basically any other nation. And the video, while talking about the US and Cap, the Blip and the issues that the show talked about, would affect the world. So yeah, don't print money.

I kinda equate the whole "Do better" thing to the steak analogy. Lets say your at a restaurant and you order a steak, you take a bite and decide you don't like it. You then complain to the waiter and you tell them "This steak is terrible, you need to do better". Naturally the waiter say's "Of course sir, what can we do to make it better for you" and your answer is "He's the chef, he should figure it out"
That's ridiculous. The chef needs to know WHY it was bad, or there's nothing they can do to improve it. If it was too salty and you just tell him to "do better", how do you think you're gonna get a less salty steak?

There’s actually a pretty big flaw in MatPat’s theory here, and that’s in regards to the reappearing people themselves. Matt takes examples from real world inflationary economics that increase the total in-market currency without any major change in population. After the snap is when the globe would have experienced the most inflation, since the number of bank notes would remain the same but the population was cut in half, meaning there is twice as many notes-per-person in the market now, halving their value. Unsnapping everyone would actually cause radical deflation, which is also very dangerous, and the mass production of currency to counter that effect would be necessary.
Think of it this way: if you have one diamond and 2 people, or 5 diamonds and 10 people, in both scenarios the diamond is worth the same, since the supply is 50% of demand. However if you have those same 5 diamonds and suddenly only 5 people, the demand plummets but the supply remains the same.
A global effort to compensate and re-house the unsnapped would be the largest step the GRC could take to avoid an economic collapse, not cause one.
Good point; the GRC is going to have to relocate and rehouse *somebody*. But the point is not that they weren't doing things perfectly for everyone with no flaws or even that such a thing is possible. The point is that they should have done better: tried to make people like Karli feel that an acceptable solution was being worked toward, so they don't despair and become terrorists, because they figure they are going to die either way.
From this analogy, it sounds like pumping money into the system would be necessary immediately after the snap, since the demand per unit of supply is halved. However, the opposite of what is described in your analogy is what happens when the population doubles. I'd love to see the other side of this, where you analyze the exact impact of a "society" when Thanos snaps. What really happens when half the cops, half the bureaucrats, half the taxi dispatchers, half the pilots, half the construction crews disappear in the world? is 5 years really fast enough to put the world back together?
You could also consider the possibility that it was not an exact split in every group, the entire population of China could've been a part of the 3.5 billion that disappeared
just a quick reminder:
it isn't half of each job.
it should tend to that percentage, but it's totally not assured for two reasons:
some jobs have more people than others, let's just say for example that the number of pilots can't be the same (and infact is probably half) that of the flight attendants. meaning that it's totally possible that all the pilots got snapped.
second: since the snap halved the population caring only about the male/female ratio. it could happen that some jobs, especially those with a higher discrepancy on the male/female ratio got fully snapped. for example almost all nurses are females, but the teacher is a 50/50 male/female job. so it could happen that all the nurses are snapped, and only the male teacher got snapped.
just the first two problems I see with the snap, I could find way more. Let's just say I don't believe the world would be that good after 5 years

If Thanos could see how the snap affected Earth, especially after half of all life was brought back, he probably would have realized he was wrong. It least with Earth. Planets all across the universe were affected by the snap, not just Earth. So other worlds may have been better off until half of their population suddenly came back. Now, not so much. Depends on what world you lived on and the conditions/circumstances.
So glad you covered this topic. It felt a little draining to hear a lot of people praise Sam's "Do Better" speech after the finale like it was some kind of revolutionary idea.

I get the theory, even if I don't agree. My own interpretation of do better is that Falcon doesn't know how to fix these problems, he says so himself, his point is that everyone in the series has their own stuff to work on and do better with. The Government need to communicate with the people and at least try to find a more peaceful solution to their problem, the Flagsmashers need to find a less violent method to bring their message across, (although probably not since most of them are dead now) even the main characters need to find ways of bettering themselves, Bucky needs to reach out to Yori and tell own up about what he did to his son, (which he does, so yay Bucky for beginning his journey) John Walker, kinda self explanatory and even Sam feels beaten up that he couldn't do better for Karli, the woman who died in his arms. What most of those have in common is that they all involve people doing what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning, sit down and talk. As corny as it sounds, the point is that there are problems with no easy answers, even the writers don't know the right answers, but the best way to find them is if we work together to solve them, to talk to the people instead of going all in with one solution that will hurt so many people. I also get how my reasoning sounds all sunshine and rainbows, I know that no matter what they do someone, some group of people will probably be effected negatively, I'm just sure that with cooperation the people of the world could find a way that satisfied most, because when you have a struggle that effects the whole world you'd need everyone to fight it together.
But ignore all that because it's just a mirror of our world and while we'll never experience anything this unsolvable irl, we can sure work to make life better if we band together.

In so glad someone else felt like it was rushed. Everyone was telling me I was crazy, but I thought it was just randomly packed with too much information.
Also they allegedly deleted all scenes of a major plotline in the show involving an airborne virus after covid 19 pandemic came in real life so that also could be the caee.
I love the show. In fact it’s probably my favorite MCU show, but it definitely needed more time. Maybe even an episode to show how the Flag Smashers got the raw deal.

There would now be problems in his country that he would most likely blame the avengers for. Perhaps the Snap led to Doom’s mother damning her own soul, which led to him being him.

I’m not saying it’s bad, because there are good elements to it, but it ends up being really meh because it was so rushed. So far all the Marvel tv shows have had really cool premises, that Disney somehow screws up because they rush them out instead of delaying the project!
The problem I have with your calculations for how much money Bucky has is that you're calculating how much he would have if EVERY PENNY of what he earned in those months was put in a bank account.
I'm pretty sure some of that money would have gone towards living expenses, or at least would have been spent on some luxuries of one kind or another. (I get that he'd be at the barracks, food would be provided, etc, but I'm sure that not ALL of the money would just go into a bank account)
He was trying to give a maximum cap of how much money he would have. Even if Bucky had (unrealistically) saved every penny, he still wouldn't have a ton. That's the only point Matt was trying to make.
But would that money stay in the bank after such supposed death?
The other problem was not including inflation. It would’ve been better if he made it an S&P500 index which is 7% after inflation per year.

It went to a barter type of give and take.

Capitalism when it actually work it's because the fierce competition makes no seat have too much power, but as soon you let seats with more power to appear, everything gets ruined.
That kind of system sounds good on paper, and may work in some cases, but people very commonly fail account for the natural evil of mankind. All it takes is one asshole taking more than their fair share and suddenly the whole system collapses. Unless, of course, you use force to organize who gets what. But then, who decides how much of something a person gets? These kinds of altruistic ideas work on the tribal level but on a scale to do real good would only lead to more violence and suffering.
…until, of course, the government shut it down because they could not benefit from it. 😏

@@sturm9087 you can't excuse a person's actions just because they have ptsd. Sam, Bucky, Rhodey, a lot of the avengers who were also soldiers have ptsd. But Walker was shown, multiple times, to find shame and anger in being bested in battle and his arc was literally about his decent into a power hungry need for a serum in contrast to Sam's refusal to take it. His ptsd is part of his character and affected him? Yes of course. But you can't claim he's not about the pursuit of power for his own benefit because that's his purpose as a character to the story.

Kratos showed boy how he could be better and how becoming better made him you aware of the impact his actions have on others in both positive and negative ways.
Sam's speech is honestly the most "Captain America" thing he has done so far. Steve was a simple man and when faced with things that were more complicated that he understood, he would admit he didn't get it but still implored the other person to "do better." Tony understandably wanted to be proactive with the defense of the earth AFTER it had already been invaded once yet Steve admonished him for it and maintained their placed was to Avenge and not be proactive. He did the same with Fury. He basically shamed Fury for being proactive with global threats because "back in my day people had to have done something wrong before we did anything (not his exact word but close)." I expected more from Sam because he is a man of this era and understands things are more complicated, but his speech was still one that would be at home coming from Steve.
He just sounded incredibly ignorant. Like a child saying 'the government should do something'. The politics in disney shows nowadays are all over the place and nonsense.
The difference between Steve and Sam is Steve knew his limits and didn’t act like they weren’t there, Sam knows his limits and then ignores them, as seen in his speech

If Sam doesn't accept some lvl of control, he too should soon be deemed a vigilante, unless Marvel ignores their own rules in favor of dumb political messages. But since he's got a family, I highly doubt Sam would try to oppose the government

I understood the “Do Better” line to mean do better getting the people impacted by decisions in the room when trying to solve complex problems. That made more sense to me especially coming from Sam as a minority, that as a group has typically been left out of the room.

I actually thought this while watching the episode, the politics in the show were handled a lot better than some other shows and did try to be balanced and the world of the MCU is different to the real world now, but some of it still didn't quite sit right with me. However, as Matpat said, his speech does still resonate with me.

You know, when on Avengers 3 when people started blipping out, i had the thought that everything MattPat is talking about. I just wondered about where everyone would go when people came back. I didn't see any of the Avengers help people get their houses back, jobs, their stuff back, everything!
I really liked Falcon and the Winter Soldier... I wasn't deeply invested in either of them before the series, and it definitely made me a bigger fan of both.

I don't remember her refusing help from Sam, and I seriously doubt she would. Why would someone refuse help from their family so they can go crawl on their knees and beg for help from big heartless bank? That sounds like the dumbest, backwards decision to make.

I always kinda thought of it as saying "the people in power aren't trying as hard as they should be." Like they're doing their jobs, but they lack the connections and the humanity that make them passionate about helping people. And by "Do better", Sam means "care more about the people you're helping.
In short, matpat thinks the government men sam is talking to are trying their best, and sam expects more. I think that they aren't trying as hard as maybe they should be, and sam wants the most out of them
The show goes out of it's way to depict how bad the GRC have been managing the whole post blip thing even tho they hold a huge amount of power and resources. I'm pretty sure they can and should "do better"

How about this: if banner-hulk had worded it differently. It could've solved a lot. Instead of "bring back those who vanished", use that snap to "make it so thanos had never snapped". Yes, its altering the timeline, but its not really like thats completely out of the marvel wheelhouse.
That would create a massive paradox, though. If Thanos never snapped, then there would have been no reason for the second snap in the first place...

I think the weakness of that final scene is that Disney can't endorse anything remotely radical or interesting. The whole movie sets up a fairly intense problem and situation. The returners who are preferred by the GRC are beneficiaries of injustice, the disinheriting of people from their lands and homes of the past two years. Compare this to the way the intervening years are talked about, the peace and mutual care that characterized the societies. Those societies likely could have absorbed the returners, but the tendency of imperialism (another major theme of Falcon & the Winter Soldier) leads the great powers to create the GRC.
The fix-boat scene isn't just an argument for "make better policy." It's an argument for mutual obligation to each other, caring for those in need with our own hands and labor. Sacrificing for others because they're our neighbors. Loving neighbors for no other reason than that they're there.
Sam's speech only fits the themes of the show if "do better" means "end your imperialism" and "sacrifice your own wealth and power to aid those in need."
That first line is the main issue right there. They knew the Flag Smashers were right so they had to make them terrorists to set up the conflict, which also means there is no looping back to agreeing with them
The solution is simple, making it happen is hard. That said, if people had already cut out capitalism while people were gone, people would probably end up accepting it. Of course the rich won't be happy but having lost their leverage I don't know if they could do much. Disney is just trying to pander, but not actually make anything with meaning. I miss the days when there was lots of different studios making movies

"Do better" reminds me of a game where one of the endings is the main character mind controls everyone to work for the greater good(or something like that) but the people had different views of what was right witch lead to chaos
I want to point out that the homes from before the blip still exist, and many of them are probably still in pretty good shape. You could just give people houses. Given how unprecedented the blip was, you could totally justify taking extra houses from landlords and real estate empires, and get people housed.
well first safety net should be family, a lot of those property may go to next of kin, and they may be OK with letting you stay or help you while you sort things out, so this can at least absorb some of those numbers, I know not all families would be quite this open, then there is houses that where left abandoned with no next of kin or houses that where left with o maintenance, there you can house other portion of people, maybe give a bonus for repairing them and repopulating areas that may have been abandoned, there may be some ways to at least alleviate things
also real state price would have collapsed prior to the people reappearing, so maybe people where not investing in real state
BTW landlord who rent to families and such are usually not the mega rich, they usually middle class , or slightly upper class, the very wealthy will have better real state investments that do not require as much micromanagement and investment, so that may not be the best place to look for

A combination of stringent rent control and taking surplus homes from mainly realty companies would probably be a better policy
Five years is a long time to let houses sit empty.
All of them were also disconnected from utilities and you can't just switch massive reators back on for power for instance.
Realistically, millions would have died after being returned.

The squatters rights argument isn’t valid. Most places require you to be staying there for at least 15 years. Some places have laws that say as high as 30 years, and I’ve seen 20-25 as the most common in the US
Arguable. Yeah most places require more time, but also, in this hypothetical situation, previous owners were supposed dead and it was a world wide phenomenon. I'm sure courts all over the world were having field days with how unprecedented everything was and how some variant of squatters rights had to apply, because there was no way of knowing. All new owners documentations would have been as legal as the previous owners.
That's kind of the crux of the debate. The people that vanished didn't do so willingly, and the people that moved on had no way to know they were coming back.

I'm going with the idea that he's not doing a full one to one comparison. otherwise the entire argument assumes that companies who don't want to increase pay even now with the "worker shortage" would increase pay and that governmental budgets would be readjusted armies being cut in half and all.
@@jpcsdutra There's also to account that quite a few homes would legally have been foreclosed on by the banks and no longer the property of their original owners in any sense as they would have failed to pay their mortgages for five years. In many cases those homes would have been resold, (likely very cheaply due to the decrease in property value that would come from half the population being gone), so the new owners present there would be entirely within their legal right to the property.
As a result, attempting to kick them out of their houses in favor of the previous owners would be as legally sound as it would be for someone in real life who didn't pay their bills to go back up to their former home and try to claim it. Though the circumstances are a bit different given the situation, from a legal standpoint there's no way any court system could side with the previous owners in that situation since the transfer of ownership would have been done through entirely legitimate means.

I actually thought this while watching the episode, the politics in the show were handled a lot better than some other shows and did try to be balanced and the world of the MCU is different to the real world now, but some of it still didn't quite sit right with me. However, as Matpat said, his speech does still resonate with me.
Wouldn't Bucky have been making some form of back pay from the time he disappeared to the time he was discovered to still be alive as The Winter Soldier? Bucky was a POW who was forced to carry out assassinations against his will, so I would think that would need to be taken into account.
Sure, it most likely wouldn't have earned any compound interest since he was presumed dead all that time, but I would think he'd still receive a monster paycheck for 70+ years of service.

Don’t forget that when the blip happened there would have also been some significant inflation - there’s suddenly twice as much currency circulating, and twice as much of many other resources, like homes, etc.
Not really. Both supply and demand moved together. It would decimate industries though. With so much overstock on housing there would not be demand for builders which means over supply of building materials. Food would rot on the shelves because there was so much and could take farmers out of business because their new product isn't moving. Imagine how that would be handled when suddenly double population starving due to lack of farming infrastructure. That's when inflation would take off.
Not really, more likely there would have been deflation. Most cash locked up while stuff like homes, cars and tvs are readily seizable. My guess is that the US and other firstworld countries would run an aggressive immigrant campaign to get factories and the like running back up to speed. It wouldn't completely work as the people they'd be getting aren't conditioned to be obedient consumerist factory wage slaves from birth.

I think what he ment was rebuilding is their common struggle and it is the senators job is to organize the rebuilding better. Everyone there has to rebuild and the power is equal among people now, and people are looking to the senator for ways to rebuild.
