Lancia 037 Group B Represents Last Era of Racing Romance
Вставка

- Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever.
To compete in Group B events, Lancia was obliged to meet homologation rules by producing 200 street versions of the 037. While visually striking and invigorating to drive, the 037 Stradale remains, at heart, a race car and is thus anything but comfortable. This, however, is precisely what appeals to owner Philip Toledano, who grew up watching Lancia-more specifically, the Stratos and 037-dominate European rally racing.
“It’s not like [the 037] was just a sports car designed for people who wanted to go fast,” says Phil. “This was designed for a purpose, and I love things that were designed specifically for a purpose, like a tool-except it's a fast tool that scares the crap out of you.”
The interior of the 037 Stradale belies the car’s racing heritage: the dash contains a circuit board, conveniently located for periodic resets by the navigator; a navigator’s light stands at the ready; and the oil temperature gauge is located on the far right side of the dash, in front of the navigator’s seat. The 037's exterior is similarly eye-catching. Sporting a Pininfarina body and a 2.0 liter, supercharged Abarth engine that, as Phil puts it, makes Star Wars-like noises as he revs through the gears, the car attracts onlookers wherever it goes.
Usually, however, this 037 is but a screaming red blur, leaving those onlookers little time to realize what they’ve just seen.

Group B was the last era of glamorous rally racing, absolutely.... It was also completely, ridicolously, furiously, enormously, outrageously, fanatically fucking dangerous!
Which is where the glamour came from. Mad, dangerous cars been driven by heros. We will not see its like again.
+Kristian Brandt
the wrc after about 4 decades are deciding to allow the 2017 wrc cars more power and more aero to make the cars faster and more exciting.
They saw the wrc pickup steam again after a long dangerous down-spiral when they added the rgt class (no engine cc limit, turbos and twin turbos allowed) that allowed cars such the Porsche gt3, because it is noise and drama that people want.
They want group B back the NEED group B back and they know it.
+Kristian Brandt absofuckinglutely!
+TheRealBajan what we need is group a in the wrc not group b. the way I see it people want to feel like their cars are the rally cars. wrc has no road going counterparts, which is the most important thing of all, that's why imprezas, evos, integrales, celicas, cosworths, e30 m3s, etc were/are so popular but no one cares about fiestas, xsaras, c4s, ds3s, polos, 206s, etc.
group b was only what it was because there was too much power for the chassis to deal with but nowadays you need more power than what and group b car had as the chassis of a wrc car is so good.
Bring back group a regs and we'd have cars with worse chassis again, so it would be better to watch and more manufacturers would be interested as the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" thing would become applicable one again.
forget group, it was great but we've got bigger fish to fry, we need to save our sport from collapse first
+Antony Collingwood Agreedexcellent pointsIt is true we must walk before we can run.WRC was dying for years, real rally has have to been kept alive via local rallies where the evos, cosworths M3s, mk1 escorts, 2.0 wrc factory cars etc could still run.I would watch one of those 10 times over a modern wrc stage. They the WRC are now coming to the realization that what people want is excitement, in this the dire hour of the WRC, when they had a grasp of winning formulas and faithful fans to the sport years ago. They are now allowing 2wd sports cars with unlimited engine size and turbocharging ( they use a power to weight ratio)Why were they ever stopped? This means Porsche gt3s and other sports and supercars can actually run in wrc.for 2017 they are upping the power in the wrc factory cars and allowing for more elaborate aero. If they would only be rid of that rubbish 1.6 engine restriction.
It seems like the FIA was on a banning spree with the WRC banning everything, dulling the cars more and more each year.
Fucking absolutely beautiful.
F*cking absolutely SH*T.
This channel features a heck lot of cars that were made in a decade, we for the longest time have neglacted as the the era of "shoe box" cars. And it's only now, where we're surrounded by cars that are basically fat, comfortable, supercomputers, that we find beauty in the simplicity of that era. And I f*cking love that!
FIAT Abarth -engine
ZF - gearbox
Dallara - chassis
Pininfarina - Body design
Lancia - badge
planned By Lancia and Abarth.
+retro racing it's quite a recipe.....
+retro racing ah c´mon exept the badge that´s almost a recipe for a nowadys ferrari, innit?
retro racing la base del telaio era la beta monte Carlo turbo!
Give it a slant nose and it is a Ferrari F40 ;)
Lancia 037 THE BEST LOOKING GROUP B RALLY CAR
Yay, cuz that delta s4 is meh
Quattro was also nice too tbh
@@victorpelini5995 I really don’t like the hatchbacks in terms of looks compared to the sports cars
The silhouette is breathtaking. Bloody brilliant.
Wow!! Such a beautiful sports car!!! Strong similarities to an F40, yet very unique as well!
Bravo 👏🏽
Can I say I like the looks of 037 more than the Stratos'? Wouldn't that be blashepemy?
It looks a hell of alot better than the S4. The S4 is more impressive, performance-wise, but it looks like a station wagon..
The 037 has always been much more attractive to me than 99.5% of Ferraris. This would be a great car to blast around rural roads on a weekend morning. I've always loved this thing.
@UCLZ_RiU2xIrxWpL9qYFEwyQ There are only 2 or maybe 3 Ferrari's that I would ever want. The 365GTB4/Daytona, the 288 GTO and maybe the 355 Challenge. Most of those are museum cars that you couldn't afford to drive on the street. 99% of people would have no idea what the 037 is. They wouldn't even look at it except for the noise.
I like it the most out of any Lancia. I love how it's Mid-Engined like a Ferrari, and it looks like a Delta Integrale. I also love how it kicked Audi's ass, even though it's two-wheel-drive.
same, but imo the 037 is hotter without the rear bumper
Best looking car ever made.
This and the stratos
Delta s4
The Fulvia is better looking but still Lancia ❤️
Basically, anything Lancia!
Eh... Miura
The Lancia 037 only 2WD car capable of beat the mighty Audi Quattro.
+Carlos Vicente yeah, exept that good ol` trusty Opel Ascona in 1982...
yeah but only on tarmac. 2WD just has no chance on other surfaces , as the peugeot 205t16 delta s4 proved, they also showed that front engine(like the quattro) is not as good as mid engine in rally
which is very true. I just wanted to remeber that the 037 was not the only 2WD that was capable of beating the Audi.
Bit of a late reply but Toyota won the Safari rally in 84..85..86 with the Celica twincam turbo
The 4wd boys couldnt handle the rough terrain
Carlos Vicente maybe because Walter Rohrl was driving the 037..............
It gives me an F40 vibe, especially the rear end. Stunning car!
Most beautiful group B car. Fight with 4WD was amazing!
And with some tricks !
Having been a Lancia Scorpion (Montecarlo) owner for nearly 40 years now, I *salivated* over the 037 all through the Group B era and since. It's *still* my favorite (and pinnacle dream) car of all time to this day. It is an absolutely *gorgeous* automobile. Purposeful and slightly menacing, yet *stunning* (and Walter Röhrl's personal favorite rally car! 👍). Despite it's relatively short lifespan during the transition to four-wheel drive in world rallying, it had a significant impact on the history of rallying and will always be remembered. That supercharger whine is soooo *good*. And a question...where, specifically, was the forested driving portion recorded? The area looks familiar. Thanks. Love this video! 👍👍
The most beautiful Lancia of all time IMO
Jesus f#cking christ how do you guys keep getting these cars? Just when I start to think that you guys have done every car I've ever wanted, you pull out another video like this and remind me that you guys can still come up with fantastic cars. Keep on surprising me, I love it.
#SaveLancia
I remember bringing home a used Lancia Beta in the 1980s and it was $700 in good running shape. Being my family were 'Murican car people", they couldn't stand Toyotas...much less anything as crazy as a Lancia in West Texas. They talked me out of it and I bought a Ford Mustang II. Should have followed my heart.
This car is a rally legend !
For me, the best rally car ever!
Its an insanely beautiful looking car. (A true piece of engineering art) You are one very lucky chap to own such a thing+++
Your collection is praise worthy and your taste, impeccable.
Lancia 037 Stradale La mia macchina preferita in assoluto!!!! Grazie per questo video meraviglioso!!!
My favorite car ever... Thank you for this wonderful video!!!
RESPECT!
I'm jaleous about this guy ! Two Lancia and a M1 ... *_*
and who knows what else...
crashlove768
There was a blue Stratos as well there on the left :)
*****
Believe he sold his Alpine, but has an RS America and a Dino 246 GT. Every car he owns seems to be an appreciating asset
Dude I know! I feel like an Alfa Romeo Montreal or a Maserati Ghibli could fit perfectly too!
chriskory Look at this appreciating asset... (I know its not the right year)

This is such a beautiful machine! Grew up loving these cars and watching group B rallying!
I just love the way it looks design wise. Beautiful car.
Man that car is incredible.. wow.. its sexy and business at the same time.. like a supermodel wearing a tactical vest and holding a machine gun.
as for the owner, his car collection speaks more to his character than asking any questions here..
A really touching video, you watch it in silence and with a smile. A wonderful piece with a great guy, owning a 037, M1 and a Stratos. I salute you, and wish the Petro guys would get a year supply of whatever they are drinking!
Looks more like race car than a rally car and those wheels are beautiful. And look at it from the side and imagine it without the big spoiler. WOW.
There´s no passion bigger than we have for this kind of machine!
If I told you how quickly I recognized his voice you would think I was crazy.
This guy has great taste in cars.
What a cool garage you have Mr Toledano, and what a cool Spanish surname as well.
I love these videos! you guys manage to find the best cars; the classics, the oddballs, and the downright awesome. and especially the owner commentary and the story telling is fantastic, you make me want to buy every single car that you feature. bravo!
Wtf happened to you Lancia....
fiat happened to them.
Very upsetting
fiat spoiltes lancia in this way, so now the unic car that lancia sells is the ypsilon
There is only one problem...the market...it's a brand with story but not strong on international market...who wants a Lancia in America (biggest market of fca)? Lancia is not Maserati and Alfa Romeo...Lancia built the glory on rally but today the market needs a different ways...very sad...
Actually i guess that the world of cars is deeply changed, that'is, nowadays you cannot hope to spent so much money withoust selling manyy many cars...we have to accept man, that era it's finished, and i'm destoyed for that...:/
Beautiful 037 !
Another great video. I remember watching the rally version of the 037 coming down the Sintra mountain in the portuguese rally. Amazing looking and sounding cars. Brings back great memories.
this is the kinda guy you just sit and talk cars with for days, phenomenal job petrolicious.
Don't know how this channel doesn't have more subscribers... It's by far one of the best youtube car channels, it's so different from everybody else
deadly time for rally but the romance was insane and it still is today! go back and watch group B footage and you want to be there! the sound the speed the danger its intoxicating. but what a dream car! awesome stuff
I have watched this video so many times....A man in love.
My absolutely favorite car ever made, with second on my list the Delta hf integrale of course 💯🇮🇹❤️
So beautiful, so agile, so characteristic, so unforgiving... And I'm so in love with it!
Questa non è un'auto ma un capolavoro, uno dei tanti creati in Italia...
Thanks for inviting us into your theatre. The enjoyment is palpable.
It was a time of greatness I tell you. People did things FOR THE LOVE OF IT. it peaked in the mid 90's but has not been duplicated since. The 90's are the best humanity had to offer. The animal to human ratio has always worked against us.
Another EXCELLENT report from Petrolicious! Thank you for posting.
Great to hear the owner talk about his experiences. He's very eloquent!!! Would love to hear him describe his other toys (Stratos and most certainly the M1).
Greatest 2 wheel driver car ever made. It stomped the AWD Group B quattro in it's own natural environment, it's absolutely beautiful, sounds great, and handles even better. I don't know of any 2 wheel drive in any state of configuration, stock or tuned, that would have been able to keep up with the Lancia, with the possible exception of the Ferrari 288 GTO Group B Spec, but it was so f*cking expensive it was pretty much inaccessible. So, that makes the Lancia a greater car. It's a Dark Horse that beat thoroughbreds.
Another winning video, Petrolicious! Stunning car and wonderful owner. Also, kudos to your graphic designer for the great titles, always!
Love this channel so much! Thank you and keep it up!
Amazing quality of work.
Thank you
L'ansia = anxiety.
Every time an English speaker mispronounces Lancia, somewhere in the world a poor Delta becomes anxious, seizes, and decides to get scrapped.
no need to mis-pronounce LANCIA for LANCIA to seize and get sent to the scrap yard.
if the wind blew in another direction, the lancia would seize+break
JM-500 JM-500
You brain is seize+break, MORON!!😂😂😂😂
Fuck off take issue with all the yanks that mispronounce Jaguar then, jumped up fuckwit get a life
+ P Noble's Garage
Calm down... Jaguar still means jaguar wether you pronounce it in american or british english. Lancia is italian for spear, which is cool, but incorrectly pronounced it means angst or anxiety, which is a pretty terrible brand name... And here someone is throwing a tantrum just because someone, who seems to be italian, jokes about it. Phew, tough crowd!
Match Maker Chris yeah right? Some people get so upset in UA-cam.
Brilliant. One of many favourite ever rally cars!!
Why does everyone mispronounce Lancia? It is, "Lan-cha."
I think there a few ways of saying it, none of which are necessarily correct :)
William Elliott "Lancha" is the correct italian pronunciation.
Actually; "Lanchia" would be even more correct
Because he is saying how it is spelled and pronounced in ENGLISH not Italian.
***** So do you pronounce Renault as, "Ren-ault?" No you don't. You pronounce it how the company pronounces it.
Another morning...and another beautiful film.
Love these reviews Petrolicious. Great interview with the owner as well. Terrific.
Thanks for filming this great car, very appreciated. I own a 1990 Lancia Delta Integrale and use it as my daily driver, I just can't resist driving it every day, even in the winter time. I would for sure, buy a Lancia 037 if i could afford it. It's beside the Stratos and the Delta Integrale, the car i love the most.
Have fun with your toy.
Regards Oliver
Rappresenta un miraggio di bellezza e potenza.
Che tempi, come li rimpiangiamo!
Thank you Petrolicious for sharing lots of amazing story to us. :)
What a machine!
It must feel delicious to pilot down your favorite stretch of road.
che pezzo di machina! Meraviglioso retro-utopia disegno!
One of my all time favourite cars ever built
Lancia 037
What a machine
Absolutely beautiful car!
What a car ... I've always wanted to see one in person, and maybe drive one who know
these videos make my day, enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!
stratos, 037 and m1...what a classic garage
Beautiful work Petrolicious - please keep these coming. The perfect combination of talk, close-ups, car in motion etc. Nobody does it better.
It's absolutely gorgeous.
what a rear-wing-beauty !
Wonderful car of glorious past of Lancia.
I like if somebody love his car, and speak about it like he does. Beautiful car!!!! I love all type of group B cars!
this is and will always be my favorite Lancia....
Man... This just take my breath away...
What an absolute gem.
To me, the 037 is the purest essence of what a car should be..
It would take a while to describe it in full, but I believe that this is the bar that all other cars should strive to beat..
Brilliant video, brilliant car, this and the delta s4 are part of my dreams
Design muito lindo. Uma verdadeira máquina!👏👏👏
Thank you so much you made my day!
***** you guys are the best car channel on the UA-cam :) thanks for the amazing videos man
this is still one of the most beautiful cars ever built
Probably the most beautiul car in Group B.
1:50 M1 in the same garage !!! This guy has it all :)
+dagag1000 AND a Stratos. Theres a Petrolicious video on it
Seeing this car makes me smile
That looks a lot like my old neighborhood (Tuxedo, NY/ Harriman, NY). Even down to the driving roads. Makes me miss the east coast.
Now this is a proper machine... I wouldnt swap this baby for a Chiron.
Funny that in the US people talk so bad about Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo etc but you almost see more of these babies there than here in Europe. But certain cars are for who has good taste, cash and who really knows about cars and how good those cars are. And then you have got the the exclusivity that is the best part of all.
Loved it since I was a kid. You have great tastes in cars sir. All you need is an integrale in there.
i love your video ! amazing images !
fantastic videos
i love the 037 more then any other car on the planet!
037 & delta s4 the greatest of
ever!!!!!
amen!
Followed by the Delta Integrale that won the Championship 6 times on the trot. Somehow they're not as memorable as the 037 and S4 though!
What a gorgeous ride!
I wonder if this was the one they used on the Grand Tour. Immaculate condition, what a treasure!
037 is my favourite!
For me it is one of the most beautiful cars ever build. Walter Röhrl called it the best ever build rally car. Of course the S1 Quattro was absolutely amazing, but Walter said about the 037 it did fit him like a good pair of shoes.
The most beautiful, perfect designed car ever! I had a ß-coupe and that's also a perfect design. If they had continued this Montecarlo,.. ... :-) Nice to see this car again, cheers!
It's just so beautiful
Literally my dream car. Got one in forza motorsports 4 and is literally the first car I buy in ALL Forza games now!
Same here. This and the Delta Integra are the first two cars I buy in any Forza game, and I always ensure that this gets the classic Rally Group B paint scheme and stays RWD.
Legendary car, nice video
Great car and in such great condition. Enjoy it man.
037 Stradale absolutely beautiful
What a lucky guy to have one of these.
this guyy dude omg what a bunch of cars!!!
