  • It was my first time running The Canyons 100K in 2022. It was my first time on the Western States trail. Heck, it was my first time in Auburn. A weekend of firsts, I suppose. Most importantly, it was my first ultra finish since January 2020; a period of time that held way more DNF's than I care to remember.
I recently moved to Southern California and thought I'd take a crack at the notoriously challenging Canyons 100K. With almost 15,000 feet of elevation gain over 62 miles I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park. I just didn't realize how much it would take from me. I've been ultrarunning for over a decade and that seems to surprise me with every race. It was a tough one but a Finish is a Finish, right?!
This race was a qualifier for UTMB and Western States 100, and thankfully I earned my spot in each with a sub-19 hour finish. See you at UTMB in August 2023!
Some of the highlights of the race in the video:
    Timestamps -
    0:00 Introduction
0:50 5am Starting Line in Auburn
    2:40 Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge
    3:48 Mammoth Bar Aid Station
4:30 Sunrise Views over the canyon
    6:00 Driver's Flat Aid Station
    7:17 Cal 2 Aid Station
    9:18 Foresthill Aid Station
    12:02 Michigan Bluff Aid Station
12:53 Out of Deadwood Aid Station #1
13:41 Out of Deadwood Aid Station #2
    14:12 Finish Line
If you ran or crewed Canyons I'd love to hear your experience in the comments!

Thanks for watching Jeff! It’s a great race, well directed and volunteered. It was my first time to auburn and I was really glad I chose to do this one to introduce me to the town and the race series. Best of luck next year!

I know this kind gentleman who made this video. He is a truly impressive person, inside out, as a person and as an athlete as well. As Roman Historian Juvenal said long time ago: Mens sana in corpore sano, meaning : Healthy mind in a healthy body, Mr. Tucker really is the embodiment and proof of this adage . Keep it up Alex. You are the Man.

This is great Alexander. I just signed up for the First 100 Mile Canyons Race next year, I can only hope to have the energy you had all the way to the finish line!
    Great video!

Haha “I stopped having fun long ago” this should be the distance trail runner’s mantra…the lines of fun and torture are always blurred

They are reversing the 2022 course for 2024 and a 21 hour cutoff, 20 for Western States… seems… relative to all things.. “easier” so I am considering it

I heard about that! I'm playing with heading out for the 2024 race. Easy/hard, either way it'll be a worthwhile race. Good luck and maybe I'll see ya there!

Awesome video. This video popped up for me when I was doing research for my next ultra to run. Do you know when registration starts for 2023?

Thanks Connor! It's a great race, give it a try if you can. They haven't announced Reg for 2023 yet but keep checking the website. They're doing a 100m version next year too so between the 100k & 100m I don't imagine they'd book out too fast.

HEY It's you. How'd I stumble across this? We were at two aid stations together untill Forrest Hill. I'm that Saint Louis guy. Glad to see you finished. And with two whole minutes left before the western states cut off. Hope to see you on the trails again, this video was wonderfully made and really shows off the course. If all is well I'll hopefully be in chamonix next August!

Hey St Louis! It's great to see you here! Thanks for watching and dropping a note. How'd it go for you? I was hoping for better but my goal was to finish sub-19 so I'm happy. If you make it to Chamonix next year look me up! Now that I finished Canyons I'm definitely going.

@@alexdtucker Awesome! After the heat on that exposed section I bounced back. took it easy on the huge climb up to dead wood, but after that I poured it on. on the last leg I ran almost all of it. Finishing with a 17:20 time or so.
I'll tell you what though, that tracker pissed me off. there was that tracker up near china wall. I got a text from my parents telling me I had less than 2 miles left. Not caring at that point I decided to just run directly through the mud and snow thinking I had less than two miles. The tracker was wrong and it ended up being almost 5. Yet the entire time you could hear the finish through the forest!! It was frustrating, but definitely the most fun I've had on the back end of a race. I was the least hurt I've ever been after a race too. Good race all around.

@@tyler9123 Wow, 17:20, truly impressive. You're inspiring. I didn't have a great day and though I'm happy with my finish, I definitely left a lot of time on the course.
That's exactly how i felt about the tracking and those last 2 miles. It felt like i could hear the finish line for miles out. I was a mess after that last 5 miles cuz I did the same. Just blew through it all to make the finish. Congrats, you earned it.
