Love your channel Sam . Some trivia ... In the early 70's I wanted to pursue machining for a career . My dad told me no , they have printing machines that will make your job obsolete . I never listened to my dad . I'm retired now , Westsail 28 sitting in the marina . Watching you printing parts out is amazing .

Sam I noticed you working inside your cockpit locker. It reminded me the time I had my Cape Dory 25 on the hard for the winter years ago at Don Paul’s Dahlgren Marine Works on Upper Machodic Creek off the Potomac River. I was working inside the locker. I failed to tie open the latch to the lifeline when the wind blew it closed while I was inside. Of course the latch was self locking me inside the locker. I thought for a minute it’s cold and if Paul would hear me tapping on the hull to let me out. I decided to lay on my back and was successful kicking the hatch back open. The cast bronze latch broke allowing me to get back out. Stainless would have made it more difficult.

I said it in the last and ill say it again, you gotta thread and dye things with a half turn forward, quarter turn back, half turn forward, quarter turn back, etc..., method, its important to establish the grooves after cutting them, your going through everything twice while still making progress, I highly reccomend it Sam!

As a machinist that is correct. 1/2 turn 1/4 turn. The 1/4 turn back removes the chip you just cut.

Shim the big black bearing/bushing up higher from underneath it as opposed to having the gear ride on the 3D printed shim. The shim you made prob won’t hold up to the friction.

Hi Sam, it might be worth emailing Peter Foerthmann who makes the Windpilot windvanes with a link to this vid. I communicated with him a fair bit before I purchased my Windpilot and he's a really nice helpful guy. He might be able to advise if you are on the right track with that washer you made and if the increase in friction is ok.

Love your video's. It's even better that they are now daily. One suggestion though, every time 2 surfuses come together and constantly slide against each other, (or rotate), use a greasy type lubricant. Things will last much longer. ie; much less wear and tear. You didn't hear me shouting when you re-built your auto tiller? 😉😎👍
Green wires are ground wires. They should all be run to a common point for all circuits. (Think of a fuse box for a house. Black and red are Hot, White is neutral, And green goes to Earth ground, the 3rd prong on a plug.) They are needed to prevent shocks, and clean up electrical signals in your entire electrical system. Radios and nav equipment, computers, can all be affected by "dirty" voltage that has interference caused by other equipment on your boats circuits and switches. If you wire in a fan, the brushes create static which feeds back into the wires and can affect sensitive equipment.

Sam that printed washer under the Crown Ring Gear is going to cause you issues
It’s going to soften (heat) and then harden and bind up and completely stop movement. Wound not suggest leaving that on a major venture. If it was a coated thin aluminum washer you’d have better luck. ( paper thin )

I have never sailed, so I am not sure if this would work, but I use teflon plumber's tape to reduce friction between swaybars and the bushings in automotive applications and it seems to hold up for multiple years and protect the bushings from wear and eliminate squeaks. You may be able to use it to reduce life chafing, and it is very compact. Hope you are doing well and I am excited to see more content!

This comment made me do some research on this. So PETG is the #1 it looks like, it's naturally UV resistant, has a good tensile strength and has a lower printing temp. #2 is ASA though which is good for parts to be used in direct sunlight, rain, and wind without any issues, although it is harder to print with as it's thicker than ABS (which is already tricky).
