Huzzah! This video was desperately needed! I think I speak for many others out there when I say I think eyes are perhaps one of the trickiest things for puppet builders, mainly because so many of them don't even know what to use or what works. I personally have, embarrassingly, used cardboard eyes a lot in the past, but I know others out there have used such things as plastic spoons, sheets of craft foam, and even remnants of Christmas ornaments. Adam, you are truly a savant - I wish video tutorials like these existed when I started out over ten years ago, but UA-cam wasn't even a thing then, and while resources for puppet building were available, they weren't really informative or comprehensive.
Those measuring spoons are the missing link! I love that they're all the right size. THANK YOU! I've been thinking of starting to mold eyes, and that just made my day.

Great job with the spoons but to make it even simpler just pour the casting material into the spoon. a little mold release and it will pop right out of the spoon :)
Just some advice on pouring silicone- stand on a chair and pour it from high. Try to pour it using with a thin stream as well- cuts down on air bubbles that potentially happen. I also tap the sides of the mold to release air bubbles. Great tutorial btw and keep it up! Thx

I know this comment is very late, but I just want to add that the Smooth Cast 300 (and most urethane resins) are extremely hazardous to your health and require adequate ventilation as a bare minimum. Respirators with organic vapor cartridges are usually recommended...although the urethane contains isocyanates that aren't even stopped by most respirator cartridges. The chemical reaction of it curing can be fun to watch but you shouldn't stand over your molds watching. Not trying to say you did anything wrong in the video, just thought someone should point this out to those who don't know. I love the whole video series you did.

Great video; I tried using measuring spoons to make a Sculpey mold, but didn't cut the handle off - I think I will, so it doesn't leave an indent on the mold's edge. Question: can you use this process to make fully round eyeballs? If you do two molds of the half-globes, when you glue them together does it make a perfect sphere? I need full-globe eyes for a side-to-side puppet eye mechanism.
I have a question: we're making puppets in my highschool for my creative arts class, and so we don't have a ton of budget for things like silicone and resin, but I still want a solid eye that'll last a while. if the main problem is surface area, could I potentially use a ping pong ball and then fill it with hot glue?

You've got some really "industrial" techniques. Where did you learn this stuff? I've been making my own puppets for about 5 years, now. I've studied a LOT of UA-cam videos, but never seen Mold Making or Vacuum Forming on here!
Hey Adam, I made a mold using oomoo 30 and I unfortunately didn't use enough (It covered the mold but there wasn't enough for the right level of thickness on the bottom) Can I pour more omoo 30 over already cured oomoo 30 and have them bond or should I start from scratch?
+Ben Burris: Yes, silicone chemically bonds to silicone. Sooner the better. After a week or so there might be more chance for a failure. But it should still work.
Adam I want to become a puppeteer and make my own puppets so I’m asking all my questions to you because you are a professional:). I use puppet pelts for fleece and fur but I have trouble deciding which is better so when I get my workshop done do you think it would be good if I bought the swatch collection, it has samples of all the fur and fleece, the felt, the size of the eyes, etc.

Smaller moulds, you can make out of (Lego/MegaBlox) blocks. Helps out in a pinch if you're going quick and dirty for a small peice.... .... as always any form has the chance of leaking so make sure not to your work where a leak will be a problem.... the wife/husband will complain... or the royal feline commander of the household will complain ;). Any sort of mould making. Assume the form will leak. ;p
If you can’t afford all this stuff which is definitely a good investment, puppet pelts sells eyes and the pupils come unattached so you can change your eye focus

That was such a waste of silicone. It could have been thinnerin height, and had so much of that dead area in the sides eliminated. Ouch, my wallet is crying. XP
A minimal investment to make the perfect tool that I will last a lifetime. It was a lot of silicone. But it was only a half inch over the tallest dome. Which is the recommended wall thickness for molds. That being said, it was much thicker over the smaller domes, which is where that “waste” is. I would have had to mold each set separately, which is not what I wanted to do.
Adam Kreutinger - I have... a 1/16" thick silicone glove mold for a mask that has lasted me over three years and I still can't get it to tear without excessive force. I'm saying that was excessive... From the perspective of someone who makes molds. While I wouldn't suggest most people bother going through the added effort, you could have made a brush-on mold with thivex and then poured a gypsum, cement, or plaster backing on top of that and come out with a mold that would have lasted as long as a low-stress application like this is going to endure, while being easier to demold since you can just pop the mold inside out to pop the eyes out (Actually how I do my eye molds) Not saying that everyone has to do everything my way, of course, just that... It makes my wallet shudder in pain. :P
I’m still not sure what you are referencing. If you could be more specific I’m sure I could clarify for you. You might be using the wrong spray adhesive in the wrong way.

Hi Adam. Have you ever used plaster of Paris to cast eyes?
No. And I would not recommend it. Might be fine for a mold depending on what you are casting. But not good for the eyes themselves.
Why did you sand and paint the measuring spoons if they were being used for the mold and not for the eyes themselves?
That process gives the eyes a matte finish.

I accidentally got spoons with a lip on them so I made a mold of the inside without the lip then did the rest of the process that way
