The guy in the middle calling Rocky Horror "an American movie" is a tad inaccurate, it may have been distributed by Fox, but everything is British. Yes I know, Brad & Janet, but again that was on the insistence of Fox, but conceived & written by a Brit, cast of Brits, filmed in Britain - it was British movie luv ;-)
I hope James and Tom have seen "Naked Lunch" by now. Like Fenton I was mesmerized when I first saw it and often go back to it as it is now a favorite. To think that it came out (no pun) in the 70's! John Hurt was brilliant and he certainly didn't care about how it would affect his career, he understood that it was an important story that needed to be told and that in the future it would be acknowledged for how groundbreaking it actually was.
Re: Rocky Horror, I don't necessarily think that people have gotten more repressed or uptight about depicting kink/sexual behavior per se, I think it's the portrayal that's gotten bland and overly earnest. I think that in attempting to normalize all different kinds of sexuality (which is great), that people are afraid to portray non-normative behavior as kinky or "naughty" since this would somehow be perceived as disrespectful, unenlightened, or demeaning. I totally agree that everyone should be respected for what they're into and everyone deserves to have positive role models they can relate to, but sexual energy at its core represents freedom and brazen joy, and it would be nice to not see it being taken so seriously all the time.
Who's afraid of Virgina Woolfe and All About Eve in one list? Consider me snatched gurls!
That's possibly the most accurate description of Suddenly Last Summer EVER
