I work in a music venue and they played our club recently. It was overwhelmingly agreed upon by the staff that their show was one of the best we have ever had. Rarely do we have on our stage that much talent, having that much fun, making the entire club want to move. Amazing. I hope they're back soon.
I think the most entertaining part of these tiny desk concerts is watching musicians maintain the intensity of the music while lowering the volume to match the space being played in. It's truly a show of control and attention to detail.
Logan i saw these guys live this last summer, hearing them play when they don’t have limits is a seriously exhilarating feeling. i was like four feet away from the whole band, they had two drummers, and another saxophone with them. seriously amazing
The rabbit hole brought me here. Unbelievable! Just saw Trombone Shorty playing House of the Rising Sun with Mumford and Son's. So glad I stopped by. You are remarkable! Every single one of you!
8 or so years ago, went to a show. Great, as always. Went back to hotel. Elevator door opens, and who’s on it. Drummer, headed to the basement with a basket full of laundry in his arms
Jazz is still alive and will never die! It warms my heart to know that people are keeping the sound alive and well. I hear some wonderful and classic jazz influences here. Reminds me of early 1970s Dizzy Gillespie.
Brian Clendinen And na pe Stop this foolishness. This is not SKA at all or straight up jazz. na pe is right that there's classic jazz influences- It's mix of funk, rock, and jazz. But to say that jazz is alive is wrong too, shorty's sound is very distinct.
Forget jazz, ska, or whatever THIS music is very much alive & the ska people or the jazz people can both take a little bit from this AWESOME band so stop arguing you both like it anyways agree on that
I saw Shorty and Orleans Ave. perform in Germany, and I was surprised by the sheer amount of talent of every individual in the band. If you ever have a chance to see a performance, don’t miss the opportunity. Who Dat!
Love love love Troy Trombone Shorty. This man represents real MUSIC. He will show you exactly what he represents as he ends a show, holding above his head a trombone and a trumpet. His music is classy, soulful, funky, and pure. Don’t think I’ve ever heard a single four letter word on any track he’s ever recorded. This is real music.
Young people have talent, they just lack exposure and guidance, something we all lost along the way; but thank God for those that didn't forget and passed this kind of thing on.
Shorty and his crew are the best...and this is coming from an "old" person. Ha! Saw him a few times at the Jazz Festival in Rochester and recently at a casino. He's always the perfect entertainer...respectful of his audience no matter their age...from little kids to us "old" folks. It's easy to love him when you feel the love he pours out!
Found this gem about a year ago and listen to it over and over! So virtuose, so energetic so full of love. Cool stuff like this shows me --> there are wonderful people out there! Love
Thank you kindly, NPR for hosting these talented musicians and uploading them here so we can access them with ease. This video and the Booker T. Jones video were absolute treats.
I live on Dumaine St. That first block up from Decatur. It’s a very musical street. I kept giving my spare change to this musician that sang really late at night. Turns out he was actually just yelling at invisible people. But something about New Orleans man, made it sound like music.
TROMBONE SHORRTTTYY!! You, Kermit and Dirty Dozen Brass band made me fall in love with Trab jazz!! All the way from Philly but looking forward to high steppin wherever possible in the NO real soon💯. Very funky sir
these guys are the real deal! found this by accident. i'm very pleased that i did. i know what will be in constant rotation for the next few months in my CD player. good shite!
Heard these guys a few years ago in NJ, just moved to Utah & SO excited for a chance to check ‘em out again tonight @ Red Butte Garden! I love the energy & joy in the sound ❤️🎼
And that was just a little taste of his talent. If he's ever in your town you got to see him and wear something very comfortable because you will dance right out your shoes. NOLA 4 LIFE BABY!
No doubt-- they str8 rocked it! Left us begging for more. The way it should b dun. Luv this nu school of Naw'lins jazz artists who are keeping the art form alive.
2011 wow, just finding these guys today on a random recommended youtube video called "when you don't have to breath". I love this sound - to me it has a little background go-go beat to it, as well as some funk and jazz. They are awesome!
How have I not had Trombone Shorty in my life?? Google "O Holy Night Studio 60 (no dialogue)" for a sublime version of the Christmas carol with Shorty on trumpet. This man is genius on any horn he picks up!!
Turn it up and do more real music like you already do, and I salute NPR music tiny desk series as one among many that capture my attention as there are rules and you get what you see. I love it. Put some jazz someway in your rotation as we all know what you do.

That is such a great point
There is no part of life that can't be improved by a horn section.
koolaidk1ss but there’s only one horn lol
Ben Zervigon he IS a horn section

That was at Jazz Fest in NOLA. Have you ever been? We went this year for the first time and saw Trombone Shorty a couple of times. He is awesome!
This man can bring a party to a cubicle. Most energetic human in the south.
A perfect example of an ensemble when there is trust, respect and love for all involved.
This is why I love NPR. NPR has turned me on to so much great music!!!
Every time I see this drummer, he's always smiling so big and just rocking the fuck out. Awesome. These guys are so hype.
That is what happens when you do what you love for a living.
Woke
That is the great Herlin Riley. One of the best.
8 or so years ago, went to a show. Great, as always. Went back to hotel. Elevator door opens, and who’s on it. Drummer, headed to the basement with a basket full of laundry in his arms
@@FMZContralto ummmmm nope - that’s definitely not the great Herlin Riley!

Um all the songs they played are ska not jazz. That is like saying R&B is still alive listening to a rap song with a bit of R&B in it.
Brian Clendinen
You're just splitting hairs... jazz is jazz. Ska is partially derived from jazz anyway.
This is definitely not ska....
Brian Clendinen And na pe

Played trombone for 15 years and then kind of gave it up. I could've been so cool. This man is a legend.
Wow . I’m ignorant to this kind of music and live it . I wish I knew more . This is 12 years ago ? Why no recent comments ?? This is gold !
Have you seen the video of him playing at the White house? That's a great one too!

Pure Gold. Welcome aboard.
@@marciawalters1733 I sure did ! it is great !
The band sounds natural and relaxed while popping out some tight grooves, very nice.
So nobody gonna talk about how clean that Bari was? Or how crisp the Shorty's triplet tonguing sounded?

Always great to see Baritone Sax included alongside the Trombone. The sounds just get richer.
Just learned about him thru my grandson's class!!! YES, I LOVE IT!!!
The groove on Lagniappe...come on as funky as it gets!
This is how the world REALLY looks...funky, multi-hued, cool with down with it. Finally NPR gets it right.
love it 🎷🎶♥
Still making people happy in 2022. Just saw y'all in the parade. I didn't know the trombone could sound so good! Keep posting!

"Well, you know.."
Classic Shorty.
I love Trombone Shorty and New Orleans
The future of jazz lives in way you play it. Trombone Shorty and his band plays it!

Trombone Shorty is the one, love this guy, he is awesome!!!!! NOLA is always in the house!!!!!
Amazing just sent this to my nephew who picked up his first trombone!! 💙
I saw Trombone Shorty for the first time at the 2017 Essence Festival....AWESOME!!!!!!

I wish they could do another Tiny desk performance. They are in a totally different place when you compare it to 8 years ago
I saw him live 5 years ago in Austin, Texas and he's amazing. Definitely the modern Dizzy Gillespie of trombone.
I’d say Louis Armstrong, Dizzy wasn’t known for playing funk or New Orleans 2nd line.
@@JudahGuerra It for sure isn't bebop but I was more referring to his unconventional playing methods.....
Dante Rosenberg still gotta go with Louis just cuz trombone shorty always talks of his love of Pops.
The 74 thumbs down were addressed by Frank Zappa years ago when he said most people wouldn't know music if it came up and bit them on the ass.
Agree 100% !!
I need a little Trombone Shorty Moon Hooch collab in my life.
Nick D'Anneo or trombone shorty too many zooz collab

I play trombone, but I love how he has his own genre. It's a mix and I love it.
Just noticed that the drummer is sitting on a yoga ball.
