Even at that age, after singing for at least 50 years at that point, he seemed so happy to be onstage. Amazing how someone can keep that creative spark for so long.
Looking from my "Big Bands Songbook," Cab was among one of the composers for "Minnie the Moocher;" the other two were Irving Mills and Clarence Gaskill. Also "Minnie" is the first single song by an African American to sell a million records. Considering that this happened in 1931--with the country going through the Great Depression, among other reasons--I'd say this was a huge accomplishment for Cab that shouldn't be overlooked.
This man is 82 years old in this video, and can still sing like he did from the 1930’s and strut. Maybe not dance like he used to, But his voice hasn’t changed in the last forty years. Like what the hell. This man is a damn legend.
I like the guy but his voice clearly has changed, he still got a good voice but with less energy in his voice and at some points of his performance, his vocals sound tired and strained.

A great thing about the show I saw was that there was a dance floor and people got up you can tell they were dancing together for 50 years. It was a night of much fun and joy.

79? 80? He was still scatting and dancing. Some people got up and danced and you could see they'd been dancing together for probably 40 years. It was a great evening. I scatted with Cab - whoo whoo! It's good to know he still has fans. Somewhere on YT there's a video of him singing "Mini the Moocher" to a great animation. That song led me to somehow learn that kicking the gong is smoking opium. Agreed - He was a truly fantastic stage performer and put out many GR8 songs - & was still going strong at 82 (I read in another comment) in this video. Now, 6 years after your comment (Jan 2024), people are saying the same about Mick & Keith at 80 after releasing their new album. I can only imagine seeing & hearing him perform back in the 30ies!! What an experience THAT would have been!! At least he left us a LOT of Musical Happines!! I'm not NEAR 80, but I have loved Cab since I was 11ish, & still love to hear him sing. The tempo here is a little faster than usual, it seems - maybe I am wrong. Either way, it sounds GR8 to me!! Peace!!
@shannonschaerer1010 The song is indeed quicker. Cab in the 70s changed the genre of the song into disco to be a bit more modern than it's original blues one, but this is still the disco version, even being 14years after releasing the original disco one!! Cab sang until November 1993 great still.
He's was aging, so the first time you hear Cab Calloway he was probably well into his senior years. If you go and find his 1920's and 30's black n white videos or the songs he sounds a lot different and his dancing was amazing.
I learned about Cab Calloway and "Minnie the Moocher" from my years of working with elderly patients in Recreation. From watching this video, it was obvious that Cab loved to perform and was indeed very talented in doing so. I think it's safe to say that "Minnie the Moocher" has stood the test of time.
I learned of Cab and his songs (Minnie the moocher first) from when Outkasts sampled Minnie the Moocher for their song Mighty O on the Idlewild soundtrack. St. James Infirmary is my main jam though. Also, on a side note, a lot of people slept on Idlewild (the movie and its soundtrack) lol
My dad use to sing Minnie the Moocher once in a while. And rather than "red hot hooche coocher" dad would say "low down hooche coocher" What a wonderful entertainer! I can see watching his old videos where Michael Jackson got his dance moves. Cab did the moon walk in a 1930's video. Wish i could have met him or saw him preform. RIP
