Great video! I would love to see a follow-up where you connect any of the sensors you mentioned to the ESP32 and what those entities look like in Home Assistant.
Great video mate, very in-depth. That said, I can’t get this working. I have spent hours troubleshooting this but not really getting anywhere. I feel that I am missing something. Do you have any sample configs that you could share? Also, when you restart HA in your video after editing your configuration, your sensors just magically show which rooms your devices are in… where did you mention the part about making that part work? Is there an integration that is required? Cheers.
Hi I need some help @ 34:40 in the video when I check the overview tap I do not see the device/devices I added to the configuration please help anyone thank you I do see the esp32 devices setup from mqtt but not my devices I'm trying to track like (phone,tablets,etc...)
I'll be looking into this in the not too distant future as I have a lot more use cases for ESPHome and would prefer to give my ESP-32's double/triple duty and not have my MQTT traffic be so chatty.
Thank you for your detail video, I have everything running HA, MQTT, and ESPresense, I want to keep track room presence by using apple watch, I got irk value, added in file editor as describes, added in ESpresence scanning 32 hex irk key, I see mqtt room presesne in settings and can see my watch name, but when I check the state is shows me not_home, I don't know what i am missing here, I went through all step and check everything, just missing something that I am not getting , any help would be appreciated, Thank you!!
I've been toying with the idea of setting up a web-store. Certainly not a bad idea to have "pre-flashed" ESP's as a listing.... I'll add it to my "to-do" list ;)
You can use a browser based Bluetooth scanning feature for Xiaomi ble devices to find your Mac addresses, or a Bluetooth scanner app. Certainly much better than trying to use the built-in scanning
Done this year's back .. not reliable unfortunately .. because the BLE may detect you in the wrong room depending on the house layout no mater what you do .. I since moved to something more precise however it's not for everyone ..
I tried to use Enroll to add my devices, but after timing out, it never added them. I thought there would have been a pairing function but didn’t see one.
Click enroll name your Device you want to add and click enroll then open Bluetooth on device and click on espresence to connect when it has disconnected then the device has been added and you can see it in the fingerprints and then you can copy then you can use the name under fingerprints to and to home assistant
Lots of people don't wear a watch nowadays (e.g., none in my extended family), the keys are left by the door, and the phone is wherever whenever, and in my home we have 2 phones between the 4 of us, since kids don't have their own phones, but they occasionally use our phones for games or videos or music. Anything tracking BT is just not going to work. I'm shocked if it would work for the majority of households. That said, when we're looking for some phone it'd be useful to know in which room it is, but there are other, simpler solutions to that.
Might not be a good look to run a continuous animation in a significant area of the screen just jumps all over the place when you edit your talking head. Quite jarring.
I can't express how much discomfort I felt on seeing several minutes blurred information... I was watching this on the TV and searched the video on my phone to comment this out. Please try to avoid that! I know the content was good, but I couldn't finish watching because of that
When there's information on screen that's blurred out, it's for a reason, either privacy or security. Sorry if it causes discomfort. The alternative is to blank it out with a plain colour.

I'll definitely be looking at that in the new-year.
Thanks for the detailed informative tutorial.
I have followed the instructions, but my apple watch only state is not_home. What am I doing wrong?
There's some more detailed documentation on the espresense.com website for troubleshooting and enrolling devices properly.
Hey 👋
I've gone down the Bermuda route because it's not MQTT and its supported native by the BT inbuilt in the newer Shellys
Interesting, I'll have to take a look at Bermuda.
I'm guessing the name is because it's triangulation ;)

You need to have MQTT setup in your Home Assistant
@@HiveMindAutomation I already have MQTT setup and running in my HA. Is there anything else that I need to get it to work?
@@simoncope2437 this is the exact thing im going through did you ever figure it out?
@@xJuNioRx2011 No, unfortunately, I had to give up on it as I had other things that needed my attention. I may try again some time.
@@simoncope2437 yeah I’m not able to figure it out either I’m about ready to give up as well
thanks for the mqttexplorer suggestion, I've never thought about a similar tool :D
It's a really handy tool for any MQTT troubleshooting.

you may need to add the Bluetooth MAC Addresses to "Known Devices" to get them to show up.
Do modern cell phones spoof your MAC ID? would this still work?
This is why you use the ID not the MAC Address.
lone wolf from Australia presenting home assistant videos thank you
Pretty much the whole reason I got started, there was nobody else in Australia doing Home Assistant stuff for Aussie Audiences.
You could also add unique_id: to each sensor config to allow them to be edited.
yes, that is a good idea.
Why not use esphome? It has this ability and can have multiple sensors attached while having native integration with Home Assistant.
I'll be looking into this in the not too distant future as I have a lot more use cases for ESPHome and would prefer to give my ESP-32's double/triple duty and not have my MQTT traffic be so chatty.

It might be an issue with the IRK value, I'd double-check that, but it's really hard to diagnose this kind of issue remotely.
I with someone sold these devices. Very neat stuff.

Goo tip!
link is wrong, contains a C instead of an S bringing to a completely different site...
Yeah. Links is messed up :/
Thanks for letting me know, I've fixed that up now.
Oh dear... I know you tried to blur your wifi password, but then you scrolled and the blur didn't go with it....
Thanks for the heads up. I think I've sorted that now using the clunky UA-cam Video Editor.

Interesting. What's the tool you're using now?
It can be hard using wireless technology to track devicecs because of overlapping base stations.

It's certainly not a suitable solution for everyone, but It's still a cool project to play with.
