I’ve got a 4-71 in my old Michigan Loader, what a good engine. That thing will fire up at any temperature and always runs perfect. Yes it’s loud, but it’s never not fired right up. I’m told the biggest killer of Detroit’s is from constantly lugging them, since they sound like there spinning twice as fast ppl tend to lug them especially older guys and I know of 2 different 6v71s that split the liners ,we were told it was from constant lugging from the driver. We never whiffed ether at it so it wasn’t an ether baby. Detroit’s love to run at a steady speed ,probably one of the best engines ever made for stationary sustain speed use .
Anytime you fire up an unfamiliar Detroit Diesel engine, you need to have the valve cover off and a set of vise-grips on the fuel rack, so you can first check for proper movement and no stuck injectors. Otherwise you'll have a runaway, then a grenade.
Just for the record; No Detroit or GM Diesel engine was hurt in the making of this video. No one was impaled by flying parts or pieces. The ignorant guy here is amazingly still alive and the customer that received the engine is very happy.
Looks like a GOOD SOLID MACHINE to me!! After an oil change and about 10/20 hours of running time the smoke will be gone and it,ll run Smoother then it does already !!
Working on a deal for one of these right now. God i hope it works out lol i want one of these motors so bad. The one im looking at was a stationary engine like yours and its really cool that you can rev it like that. Its going in an IH Loadstar 1600
The 71-series is really too big for most pickup truck engine swaps. The 53 series is a better candidate. But if you have a vintage truck chassis, then go 3-71, 4-71, or 6V-71.
Somebody’s messed with the governor. Older Detroit’s like this one had mechanical, constant speed governors that were set to 1800 rpm, no idle. After the 70’s most had Woodward electronic governors that could operate either in droop or isochronous mode.
That’s the Woodward hydraulic governor on this one from what I remember the knob he is pushing went directly to the rack and bypassed the governor. We used it on one we had to give it full fuel when starting
Put a quart of automatic trans fluid in the fuel ,it will smoke a little but it will loosen the rings up and get them working again and don't race it up set it about 1500 high idle for about a hour ,,,,1 quart of trans fluid for every 5 gallons of fuel ,,,that runs good don't TACK it out till u free up the rings
Especially since he claims this was from a cold start.... Which I have a hard time believing. Ferguson - So what if you have seen them reving over 3k, I've reved a 7.3 all the way to 5k, that doesn't mean it was a good idea and didn't stress out the internals.
Patrick Baptist 3 to 3 and half k is a lot on a agricultural engine. Seen it a mercedes mb trac, tractor. A modern Diesel engine in a car or Jeep is different. They can go a higher all right

It's a NA engine, it wouldn't be that great in a truck, just get into the altitude and watch the power go down hill. If it isn't turbo charged (diesels) then it isn't very favorable in trucks.

Well not right now it doesn't I've gotta finish rebuilding the rear end one of these years, it's been sitting over a year waiting on that one LOL. I'm also not a big Detroit fan, I like to hear em run but I wouldn't own one. In trucks I likes the 7.3s mine is just a little shy of half a million miles on the org engine and the worst work it's seen was a set of injectors and it still fires up good in the cold even though it hate a glow plug tip awhile back still has very acceptable blow by. Also have water/meth injection setup on it as well. I've also got a bus converted to an RV with the 7.3 in it and it's governed at 2500RPM, I hate that, I've gotta order the connector so I can reprogram the PCM and remove that and the 55mph limiter. Now that engine on has 91k miles on it, cleanest 7.3 I've ever laid eyes on. Ford lost my respect with their diesels they brought out after that and I'd say I'd have a Detroit before one of those. I hate the fuel racks on those old DDs, big reason I wouldn't have one, 7.3 can't run away unless the turbo dumps oil into the intake.
Obviously she needs flushed with diesel. Like 3 or 4 gallons but not run with it in. Then the best synthetic oil and then put in an old early 50's coe with new running gear for a beautiful hauler with a heavy trailer for short equipment hauls. She would work for 20 years looking and sounding great.
Seems kinda cool how 2 strokes have around twice the torque/power of their 4 stroke counterparts, sound like they're spinning at twice the rpm and have twice as many cylinders. Would be an awesome built if someone could take such a diesel and increase the revs a bit more ^_^
@@Diesel8290 well the fuel consumption as far as I remember was actually pretty impressive for an old engine. The BSFC of the Detroit Diesels was pretty low (obviously part-throttle conditions may differ, but still) - but yeah lol, no doubt about the sound and emissions

To fix that radiator leak put into a cold near full radiator two egg whites & a soup spoon of powdered black pepper & run the motor till it hot, that will seal up the hole no problems.
As always no muffler or hearing protection used. As far as the smoke in the exhaust, Amsoil synthetic oil should take care of that. I use it my 2 classic Fords.
That's opened up a lot higher than 2300 rpm,s sounds like about 3000 I wouldn't tach it up like that till the rings reseat themselfs auto Trans fluid in the fiel will free them up great running engine I have rebuilt probably 8 to 900 of those old detroits I had a fleet of 8 kws with the v 12 s in them used for heavy hauling all automatic 8 speed Allison's in them ,,,best trucks I ever had that was back in the 70s ran them all the way up till 2010 cheap to rebuild too about 2700 dollars and always had at least 3 kits put up just in case lol what do you want for it
It's not a Detroit, it's a "gm diesel" lower compression, 2 valves per cylinder. Not as much hp as Detroit,Built to last forever. Detroit diesel 4 valves per cylinder Higher compression Higher horse power then gm diesel Don't last as long as gm diesel between rebuilds

If you're confused look up the combined history of EMD, Detroit Diesel, Winton Engine Company, and General Motors. They are literally derivative of each other with the main difference being size, governed engine speed and changes to forced induction. This is all thanks to GM owning both EMD and Detroit Diesel. There is no such thing as "GM Diesel." Please go check your facts.. the closest thing to GM-Diesel would be the GM-Isuzu joint venture called DMAX Engines, which produces the modern, high speed, FOUR Cycle, V8 commercial grade turbodiesel that is branded in the US as Duramax. Remember this: A 2 cycle engine at 2000 RPM "sounds" like it is reving twice a fast as a 4 cycle at the same RPM.
I love watching a old start cold start. And the first thing somebody does is rev the snot out of the engine before it warms up.
It's how Detroits roll.. sound like they are doing a lot more rev's than they are and it's good practice to rev them up when starting them

4-71 with N65 injectors has like 160 HP gross. You wouldn't be happy with that in an F350.

LOL McGyver. That isn't wise because it coats the passage ways in the block reducing thermal efficiency. Always better to just fix the real problem.
